Weller is extremely underrated / unknown in North America. He's a musical and lyrical genius. Saw live once, solo gig. It was a religious experience. Good on doing this.

Paul Weller, such a great musician, often overlooked. I just loved how he always changed. From The Jam, Style Council and later on.

Sound Affects is one of the greatest albums... ever. Their three album run of All Mod Cons, Setting Sons, and Sound Affects is brilliant. Pretty much anything from those albums is pure gold. Their last proper album, The Gift, is also worth checking out and paved the way for The Style Council (which I'm not a fan of). (Wish this was only Jam songs... but that's MY preference... lol) I was such a huge fan of The Jam and got a chance to meet them at Tower Records in LA where they were kind enough to sign my albums... I remember hearing Green Day for the first time and thinking "There's NO DOUBT where they got their sound from!" They were obviously influenced by The Jam.
Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, and Paul Weller are the cream of the crop for British solo artists...
Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful reactions.

Weller's three different stages all top quality eh. Been a fan since '78 when Tubestation came out. Missed 77! He's very similar to Mc Cartney with the three stages....ie..The Beatles....Wings...and solo.

Absolutely one of my favorite bands. Some my favorite songs, Beat Surrender, Eton Rifles, Mr. Clean,Butterfly Collector, Down in the Tube station, pretty Green, Start, Davis Watts, To Be someone , Strange Town, Monday.
I did see them once in late May of 1981 in a way oversold club on an extremely hot night . I’m surprised the venue didn’t get in trouble for that one. I also still have a cassette, have since burned to cd , of their March 1978 concert at the Paradise in Boston. It was broadcast on Local station WBCN. Should try to upload it to UA-cam one of these days.
    Great review!

I own every album by The Jam on vinyl. Great band. My favorite album is The setting sons. Songs like Thick as thieves, Little boy soldiers, Smithers-Jones, Boy about town, The modern world, Pretty green, and of course the four songs that Peter chose and That's entertainment to name some songs I remember, but the songs one could pick are so many . You mentioned The Supremes You can't hurry love. Weller was a fan of songs like that (in line with the Mod thing). On the Jam records amidst Weller's songs you can find covers of Heat Wave and In the midnight hour.

I'm not familiar with this artist but decided to watch the full video and comment here. The facts you share are cool. He is a celebrated artist in the U.K. Song 10 is a solid song with gruff type vocals like you said. Song 9 is a smooth song like you said. I like the melody. It has a dreamy sound.Nice lyrics. I agree it's easy on the ears. Song 8 has a bluesy guitar and atmosphere. Song 7 does sound like a bit of Folk, a nice ballad. Song 6 is an uptempo tune that moves along well. Interesting lyrics. I agree it has energy and a vibe. Song 5 has a cool guitar intro. A smooth song with nice melody. Song 4 is a rocking song with solid percussion and guitar and cool lyrics. Song 3 is uptempo and straightforward Rock style. Song 2 is fast and rocking. Cool bass and drums. Shawn, you said your Dad was a milkman. I have memories back in the 1960's when we used to be excited when the milkman delivered milk bottles to our house. That was important work back then. Life was different decades ago. Song 1 is an interesting uptempo song musically with sound effects and storyteller lyrics. The observations by you guys are fun to listen to. Shawn and Trey, you both chose mostly different favorites. There are a lot of good songs on this top ten. My favorites are Above The Clouds, The Butterfly Collector, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight.

Appreciate you checking out the whole thing, Weller is a very talented guy, too bad we never really discovered him in the States! Ya with the milkman so many jobs have disappeared over the decades, life was simpler and dare I sound like the old guy and say better most of the time back in the day.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Shawn, I agree with you. Certain jobs then are not available now. Yes, life was different and simple and better most of the time like you said. I remember in the 1960's we used to see a man pushing a wooden cart down the street carrying fruits and vegetables to sell right from the cart. We don't see that any more.

Looking forward to Sound Affects - for me the best lp by The Jam. Awesome choice of an artist to review! Weller’s is sadly under-recognized in the US. I’ve been a huge Weller fan since early ‘82. One of my favorite shows was seeing The Jam on one of their final concerts at Wembley Arena in December ‘82 while studying in London for a semester. Your guest had Good choices of tunes to play. I would have replaced ‘You’re the Best Thing’ with Speak Like a Child, It Just Came to pieces in my Hands, or Long Hot Summer. The Jam’s output is especially impressive when you realize he was only 18 when their first album came out in 1977. From the early stuff, I’ve always liked ‘In The City’, ‘All Around the World’ and especially ‘Life from a Window’ (which to me sounds like The Who circa 1966). But my favorite era of the Jam is All Mod Cons and Setting Sons, plus singles like ‘Tales from the Riverbank’. I’m not sure what was meant 5hat Elton Rifles was their only song with a video. The Jam actually have lots of videos for their songs and I have a dvd full of them. Anyway, The Jam And Wellers solo career are amazing. The Style Council have plenty of good moments, especially on their first 3 releases (1983-1985), then they kinda lost me.
    Great show!

Shame all the solo was from the 90s as there is loads more brilliant songs right up to this year, my fav solo album is 2008’s “22Dreams”, I could list so many classic solo songs over the years , floorboards up, woo se mama , it’s written in the stars and a 100 others. Style council favs include Long hot summer , Ever changing moods, very deep sea and I haven’t even touched on The Jam !! So many classic tracks but you can not do a Jam list without Going Underground ! Appreciate the background chat, probably most info known by UK fans but good for those not so familiar. Thanks guys

  • @N0rnagest

Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton both played 'Rickenbacker' guitars in the early days .. an instrument known for its bright punchy sound, hence the early Jam sound (The Beatles used Rickenbackers too in their early recordings). Bruce was originally a lead guitar player before transferring to Bass. So his basswork is not 'run of the mill'.... and The Jam's singles did not appear on the first couple of albums..... albums were albums and singles were singles.
Mick Talbot of the Style Council also came from a 'Mod ' band called 'The Merton Parkas".
And yes 'The Small Faces' are brilliant and massively underrated.
