Paul Weller wrote these lines when he was 22. Amazing
"Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude"
A police car and a screaming siren
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing and stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamp light blinking
    That's entertainment, that's entertainment
A smash of glass and the rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls
    I tell ya that's entertainment, that's entertainment
Days of speed and slow time Monday's
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls
    I say that's entertainment, that's entertainment
Waking up at six AM on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard
Watching the tele and thinking about your holidays
    That's entertainment, that's entertainment
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away
    That's entertainment, that's entertainment
Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs
    I tell ya that's entertainment, that's entertainment

Well done, please do more Morrissey and Smiths. You would not have heard Morrissey's version unless you owned the Single "Sing Your Life" I saw that you read that out but remember this was before the days of UA-cam. There is a fantastic B Side "Jack The Ripper" from the single "Certain People I Know" it's on the live album Beethoven Was Deaf but the studio version is much more haunting. I recommend it. Please do more Morrissey and Smiths reactions!

I would strongly think Paul Weller would not call himself Middle class - he came from a Working Class background.

Maybe a difference in American speak as middle class here is still considered working class.

Stumbled across this last night and spent this evening watching your reaction to The Stone Roses debut which was great. Would be interested to see your reaction to The Jam's Sound Affects LP from which this song comes from and for me is similar in places to The Stone Roses debut in its 60s influence 'feel'. Note the stone roses took part of their name from a Jam song. Glad I came across your channel and am now subscribed! Off to watch your Ride reaction next - a local band to me and one of my favs..

And what the presenters recommended in regards to the Morrissey version as a Printer, was obviously a repeat over lay Train on steel Track. And added so much to the Fade in, Fade out melody. Simply beautiful. But there's a live Morrissey version on LIVE IN DALLAS DVD. U have to see.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics I’ve watched most, if not all, of your Jam(and Weller) ‘Reactions’...and as a self-confessed Jam nut 😀 I have to admit that you guys have hit the nail on the head regarding The Jam (and Weller).
I know it’s been a gradual build up thing for you guys getting to know what The Jam were all about....and so refreshing to hear Americans(if you don’t mind me using such a turn of phrase) not only air their views on The Jam...but really ‘get’ them....as you well know that The Jam were pretty well ‘lost’ on most people from the States.

I never heard this song. This is an interesting song battle. Two different versions. The first version is more upbeat and rhythmic in tempo. The second version is more of a ballad with some strong vocals. Your comments on both songs are accurate and it is a close call, but I think I will agree with you guys that the edge goes to the first version. The song battle videos are cool. I think a good one would be the song ' On A Clear Day ', Sinatra's version and Tony Bennett's version. It's a good song from the '60's. btw, I miss watching your live stream videos. Hope you all had a great time on Friday's video.

First time hearing the Moz version, I liked the musical arrangement but didnt like the way he rearranged the lyrics, took something away from the original. In The Jam version I think Bruce Foxton's bass doesnt get enough credit. Looking forward to the Top 10 Paul Weller songs, does it cover his whole career or just his solo work? Way too many to choose from to narrow it down to ten. I would struggle to make up a Top 10 Jam. Top 10 Style Council and Top 10 solo list.

I am sorry but I love The Smiths, Morrissey, and I love The Jam but there can be no argument that the best version of this song is by The Jam. There is no competition between these versions at all. Me and my friends have often talked about who is the best Weller or Morrissey and whilst we sometimes struggle, Weller is stronger overall. Love Moz but come on Weller is just top dog. He has his faults though but let's not go there!

Yeah, I do love this song. The two versions are very close, quality wise, and I actually heard the Morrissey version first. Still, the original does take it and it gets bonus points for Paul Weller seeming like a much better dude than Morrissey (though Morrissey is the better singer and possibly lyricist). Plus, the original has a pissiness about it that I appreciate.
