Let's be honest, Paul Wellers greatest album and unquestionably his best solo line up ever - Helen, Yolanda and the Steve's - just unbelievable. Headlining Saturday night at Glastonbury in 1994, was this his best gig ever?
Steve White, one of the best live drummers ever, bit for sone reason he never received the plaudits he so richly deserves!
You must listen to the whole set, the Wolverhampton Live wood gig is a must ,weller at his finest
The Modfather's also enjoyed a creative and intriguing second solo purple patch with 22 Dreams, Wake Up the Nation, Saturns Pattern and On Sunset. The quality and quantity of Weller's career output is nothing short of incredible. He's an underappreciated giant here in the States.
What can I say that hasn't been said before? The man is a song-writing genius.
Weller had a superb 3 album run at the start of his solo career. His self titled debut, Wild Wood & Stanley Road. This song is a perfect example of his high quality song writing from 1991 to 1995.
Hey Chet. I'd absolutely agree with that.
Cheers, Jon.
I'd say Heavy Soul too, his 4rh album, he was on one hot streak 91-98
I was there that night, had a friend next to me who had never been into weller, the jam, etc, any of it; and abut 20 minutes or so in he turned to me grinned and said "I was so fucking wrong'".
Great and very pleasant surprise to hear this song on the channel. I loved the live version, which I had never heard before. The live version I knew was from the Live Wood album. This one is different, isn't it? I haven't heard this in a long time, but I really liked this version. On Paul Weller's solo career, I somewhat disagree with the general view of it. Really the first three albums are excellent, but Heavy Soul is almost as good as these. And every Weller album has at least a few good songs on it. 22 dreams and Wake up the nation are brilliant too. That last one especially deserved a lot more love than it usually gets from fans and critics alike. For me it's a surprisingly brilliant record (it's just not a masterpiece because of two or three less interesting tracks), the closest the Modfather got to his work during The Jam days (in terms of sound and even quality). And it has the added merit of having Bruce Foxton play bass on some tracks. Simply incredible! Cheers, guys!
Weller is amazing, all incarnations.
Going to see the modfathet play at edinburgh castle next month......we are the mods !!!!
Wonderful. Especially the live version. I'd agree with the previous comments about his first 3/4 solo records, but after a bit of a lull his last few albums are right up there again. Worth checking out
Great song...superb live version
Thanks Gerard - glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers, Jon.
@@theaudiophiles7889 Great review guys.
I sat in the front row of a Steve White drum clinic and my heart started beating out of time it was hipnotizing and i was on the edge of my seat he drums so powerfully lol
Having watched this performance, I can fully understand how that might come to be. - Andy
it was a awsome experience and when it a
was over we went to leave and bumped into his brother Alan White who was the Oasis drummer lol
@@twowheelsandwhiskey3868 The White brothers have always been a massive influence on me, Between the two of them they have played on some of the best songs of the 90s.
@@johnny6476 they have indeed, add a little Danny Goffey for the perfect 90s mix
The live track was much better for me, not heard either version before but really enjoyed it with the band. Cheers guys!
Thanks LLJ.
Cheers, Jon.
Some years ago, I was assembling a stereo. The shop was adorned with poster-size overexposed B&W photos of guitar heroes. Most were easy to identify, but I couldn't shake the alarming idea that the last one was Gene Simmons. The salesman reassured me that it was in fact Paul Weller, and we completed an amicable transaction.
I thought that Style Council sucked; far too MOR, jazzy, and safe.
First hearing Sergeant Pepper when you were 19? No, too old - my theory is that the best popular music was released when you were 15 or 16. Try it!
I might be wrong on this , but i think this live version at Glastonbury was the same day he split from his wife D C Lee,
Weller has certainly gone downhill after he departed from Steve White...
Hey Gypsy, thanks for your comment.
Honestly I haven't followed the latter part of Weller's career, but he's still shifting units and getting #1s.
However, Steve White will always be one of my favourite drummers.
Cheers, Jon.
