I remember at the time this was seen as a bit of trading water by The Jam and reached number 4 where as their two singles in 1980 were both number 1s, but with the distance Of time this stands out for me as classic Jam,,,, and go Rick show everyone what a great drummer you were !
The Drums on this are really something quite remarkable

Solidarity sister! Your analysis was spot on. The Jam, The Specials and Billy Bragg were my political awakening as a teenager. By the time I left school - I had two options. Be exploited on a YTS or join the Army - and be exploited. I chose the Army! The final irony was that, as a member of CND, they sent me to a Nuclear missile regiment! There was good bits. I guarded Rudolph Hess in Spandau Prison - after the Nazi's had killed my Grandfather with a bomb in 1940 - and I also met my wife, of 32 years, in West Berlin.

Without looking it up I believe Funeral Pyre reached No 4 in the U.K. charts as did their only other single release in 1981 Absolute Beginners. Both great song with Beginners having a fantastic B side in Tales from the Riverbank. Despite Mr Weller discribing 81 as being a horrible year for songs. 1981 was the only year The Jam didn't release an album during their career.
The Jam -Strange Town......now that was a great single.
