A Perfect Circle - The Package (Live at Red Rocks) | Reaction
Someone once said that Dionne Warwick's version of this song was bittersweet. And the Stranglers version was bitter-sour.
Hello Mary has a vibe that reminds me of Plumtree but with a slightly darker sound.
Here's the Top 30 Albums (and ep's) of 2024 from Fred from KINA. Only the top 4 where really outstanding...5 and 6 would probably be 9 and 10 in any other year. 30 Smashing Pumpkins..Aghori Mhori Mei. 29 X...Smoke And Fiction. 28 Fontaines DC...Romance. 27 Kim Gordon ...The Collective. 26 Library Card..Nothing, Interesting. 25 Osees...Sorcs 80. 24 The Avett Brothers...The Avett Brothers. 23 Public Service Broadcast...The Last Flight. 22 King Gizzard...Flight 5741. 21 Liam Bailey...Zero Grace.
20 Jake Bugg...A Modern Day Distraction. 19 PissedJeans...Half Divorced. 18 The Jesus Lizard...Rack. 17 Meatbodies...Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom. 16 Laura Marling...Patterns In Repeat. 15 J Mascis...What Do We Do Now . 14 The Smile...Wall Of Eyes. 13 Sarah Jarosz...Polaroid Lovers. 12 Damien Jurado...Roger's Audition. 11 Shellac...To All Trains.
10 Adrianne Lenker...Bright Future. 9 Marika Hackman ...Big Sigh. 8 The Telescopes..Growing Eyes Becoming String. 7 Pile...Hot Air Balloon. 6 The Bevis Frond...Focus On Nature. 5 Ty Segall...Three Bells. 4 Tindersticks..Soft Tissue. 3 Maruja...Connla's Well. 2 Wand...Vertigo. 1 Mount Eerie...Night Palace.
Thanks Fred. I was disappointed with the Kims this year - both Gordon and Deal. Not terrible, but not great. I thought the Fontaines record was average. I did enjoy Mo Dotti's Opaque. Your top 3 I also liked a lot. Cheers, Jon.
Jon there is a documentary on UA-cam about the Scottish indie scene called Big Gold Dream. It covers the Edinburgh and Glasgow bands and labels from the late 70's & early 80's.
Thanks Jeez, I'll check it out. I've got some Pastels and other Postcard Records acts lined up for Andy this year. Cheers, Jon.
Glad to see Cursive made Andy's list! I've been introduced to some new bands here and appreciate what you guys do. I know it takes time and effort. Regarding vocals, especially screaming, I totally agree that it's very subjective. I think for me at least, part of it is wanting to hear emotion behind it. Touche Amore is an example where without the sincerity behind the vocals mixed with the lyrical content it just wouldn't do it for me. Their songs 'New Halloween', 'Flowers and You' and 'A Broadcast' are a good example of this. I'm a big Manchester Orchestra fan too and I remember a video where John said something along the lines of "I'm not sure what he's saying but I believe every word of it." Anyways, hope you both are having a wonderful New Year!
I don't want to mention songs that you will not play, but there is something special about this song. Believe it or not i saw this being recorded live. The song is Hawkwind "Uncle Sam's on Mars." Why do i mention this? Read the lyrics. Look when it was written. Watch the news. I was listening to it last week and it has a strange air if prophecy. As well as being a great song.
I knew 4 or 5 of those 16 - which is what this channel is about. One of them was the George Harrison, so there! Willard Grant Conspiracy had me in tears. I suspect that Jon may have Where The Wild Roses Grow on his to-do list. I'd forgotten that Hello Mary was a viewer recommendation. So, props! I lost count of Jon's Pixies references in this video.
Thanks to you and the community, we had another great year of music and discovery. Looking forward to the delights of 2025, cheers all!
500!! Well done guys and thanks music is best when shared by friends.
The "Live From Copenhagen" version is arguably better, but what do I know?
1 The Clean Point that thing somewhere else 2 Beach Goons hrsb 3 Joy Division Sound of Music (JD is my chicken soup/ fishnchips go to) Thanks for what you guys do ,it's great to discover new and interesting music.
Happy New Year's!
UA-cam gave me a list of the music videos that I watched the most in 2024 MC5 - Come Together (Live on KEXP) yeule - sulky baby (Live on KEXP) Kim Gordon - BYE BYE (Glastonbury 2024) Boris - Just Abandoned Myself (19 May 2017, Max Watts, Melbourne) Orbital - Halcyon On and On. I guess this is where I am right now.
Last year's standout for me was Hello Mary. Desperately difficult-to-search name; I really really hope they don't do an Alabama Shakes on us. Honourable Menschen - O'Brother - so are they all, all honourable.
Hny to you both. Thanks for your channel Stuart
Happy New Year guys! Hey Andy, the way you were describing your No.1 pick made me think that you might like MuteMath with Reset. I especially love the drumming in it. (edit. It's an instrumental too)
surely it's the folk version of "dance to the music"
Some great picks in there, cheers all and happy new year!
Thank you, and happy New Year to you, LLJ!
HNY! I''ll namecheck Squid, not least for their instrumental versatility and general weirdlookingness. Was the perfume _Self-Righteous_ by Anita Roddick?
Came to both At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta after both bands were essentially broken up, only to see them both reunite in the last 10 years. It was actually this song that made me pay attention to both bands, after ignoring them as a younger adult as they weren't the type of music I was 'into' at the time. My loss, but I made up for it and now The Mars Volta is in my top 3 bands of all-time and At the Drive-in is in regular rotation. Thanks for the great reaction and trip down memory lane. Cheers!
Best song on the LP. Shame so many people missed this gem of a song.
Shit Jon. I’m pretty sure I had that Tommy Bahama shirt at 11:56 back in the day.
My favourite Inspirals track - this could go on forever and I'd be happy.
10^12 pins = 1 terapin As a footnote to yesterday, in _Steptoe_ Harry H Corbett had a catchphrase of calling his father a dirty old man; for example when he dropped the pickled onions he was eating in the bath, fished them out, and put them back in the jar. This probably explains why in _A Hard Day's Night_ people keep referring to Wilfred Brambell as a very clean old man. I still feel a twinge of nausea at that scene in Season 2 where s gang of stevedores each crack a raw egg into a mug of beer and drink it for breakfast.
Gelatinous Cube??? I'm still working out what you were trying to say Jon lol Happy 2025 Guys!
(In my best Julian Clary voice) ''I've just been sucking a fisherman's friend''!
Good entertaining stuff chaps.
For anyone who didn't recognise the Steptoe and Son theme tune, that was the Steptoe and Son theme tune. It's a little known fact that Old Man Steptoe was Macca's grandad; it's unclear whether Steptoe the Son was his father or his uncle. I never loved Eva Braun. I'm pretty certain that Fisherman's Friends used to be flavoured with chloroform, which was presumably taken out when it became carcinogenic. Every morning at the lab you could see him arrive, he used to roll in about 9:45, kinda narrow in the mind and broad at the hip, and everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big Jon. Written by one Aussie postdoc about another ca. 1970; only one person didn't find it both accurate and funny.
Yep early UB40 was definitely the best. Then they went commercial and did covers. Didn’t like the direction. Even though I did not buy the Labour of Love album. It was always played at house parties. Especially the tracks Johnny Too Bad or Sweet Sensation. lol…. King which was the double A side with Food For Thought. Was my jam.
The Shins are from my town, Albuquerque, though they departed for Portland, OR, many moons ago. I'm a huge Beatles fan, brought up in the '60's, and The Shins are one of the few Beatle-esque bands I love. Thanks for reacting to this! 🤠
Fantastic, on another level.
Love Jim Ford
A little backstory for those not familiar with this song. During the time off between 1997 and 2011 when the band was broken up guitarist Todd Nichols and bassist Dean Dinning became a songwriting team in Nashville writing music for others. The music for this song was a demo that they had done without any lyrics that they were going to work on with one of their Nashville cowriter's in hopes of pitching it to other artists. Around this time Toad had reunited and we're slowly working on songs that would be recorded at the end of 2012 for what became the 2013 "New Constellation" album and lead singer Glen Phillips was listening through a bunch of Todd's demos and heard this and was instantly inspired to write the lyrics to "California Wasted", which during its infancy was originally titled "Wasted On Me". Glen wrote the song about his lifelong journey with clinical depression and how even with all of the beauty of California in front of him sometimes he simply can't see anything but the darkness. When they shot the video they used little CGI glimmers of white light all around him to signify all of the light and magic around you in the darkness that you can't see when you are in a dark place. as for the background of the recording, the band tracked the majority of this including the lead vocal live in the room. they did this album on their own time without a record label as they had no interest at the time and still have no interest in putting out music for anyone other than themselves.
Love the Shins, have since the first album, they have everything i love in a band.
Agreed! - Andy
I think I prefer Simon Templar by Splodgenessabounds for my Saint. Another decent Beatles-esque song about Simon is The Coral's 'Simon Diamond', there's a decent live version here on UA-cam.
I thought it was the archetype of a soldier, as mentioned - throughout history and that grim determination, "British" humour/fatalism, doing your duty even if you know it's insane and going to end badly. Very much made me think of Catch 22 and that mindset.
Very pretty song, as you said Jon it had a nice Beatles flavour to it. Good pick!
Great version of an absolute Christmas banger. Thanks gents.
I’m with Jon on this. One of my favourite accidental Christmas songs. Haven’t heard it much this year amongst the endless plays of Tom Grennan and Katy Perry numbers. Loved Andy’s reaction to the ‘Nuclear fallout zone’ line! Incidentally, like Jonah you will almost always find me in the kitchen at parties… 😉
Well, I never cared for the original, but since I'm a huge Maynard fan, he's introduced me to a version that I love. So, any way or form that introduces people to music is fine with me. The Ozzy analogy is spot on!
I remember this being very popular at discos in the eighties, but I’m sure it was longer than this version. Maybe there was a 12” version of it, or maybe I just remember it incorrectly. Great song though.
I think the other Lennon song was Just Like Starting Over. Xmas songs are not really my thing but I do have a soft spot for Jethro Tull's Ring Out Solstice Bells.
Good choice, I've always been fond of this one.
I’m a bit of a collector of Christmas music (much to my family’s chagrin.) My holiday playlist is extensive and contains the traditional and obscure, religious and secular, serious and amusing, sacred and profane. I’ve sought them out over the years and added them (the playlist is more than 46 hrs long.) This song is on it and it hits a sweet spot: conjuring up nostalgia, while adding a wistful sadness. The best Christmas music always carries a whiff of something lost - the Welsh word for it would be “hiraeth”: a deep longing or grief for a time or place to which one can never return, or never even existed. Good call. It’s 364 days away, but come next year may I suggest a great song by the Danish band, Cody. Titled “It’s Christmas”, the song perfectly exemplifies that sense of grief and loss while hiding it behind an upbeat melody, giving the whole piece a dichotomy and irony that encompasses the season’s complexity. Cheers to you both. Hope both of you had a wonderful holiday.
@@arlopop and the same to you! And thank you for the comment and recommendation.
Played “ You’ll always find me in the kitchen at Parties “ as a college dj, it did get some minor play on aor radio and early mtv as well. Didn’t know this song at all.
I remember Jona Lewie saying that the meaning of that song was about when he was at a party he would not be in the living room at parties dancing but be in the kitchen snorting coke off the kitchen table. Of course he couldn’t say that in the song, but people who knew would know.
Much of the imagery in the song (and soldiers' kit in the video) is WWI; which was famously going to be over by Christmas. Only four years out. Another snigger-inducing instrument is the bassoon, because everyone loves flatulence jokes. Now that postal service has resumed. my fourth seasonal offering arrives in the form of a Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis. The funniest thing was when I was leaving the bay, I saw three ships a-sailing, they were all heading my way. I asked the captain what his name was and how come he didn’t drive a truck? He said his name was Columbus, and I said, “What the ????”
Season's greetings Mike. I was thinking of offering up that particular TW track next year to Andy. Cheers, Jon.
I heard this for the first time on the radio just the other day. It’s great.
Glad you enjoyed it too. Merry Christmas!
Nice version! Coincidently I played U2s version of this track on my channel today, cheers and happy Christmas to all!
@@lordlockdown64, great minds! Merry Christmas to you!
Mr Garrison's Xmas greeting to all! I've known Darlene Love's original since Methuselah was a lad. and this version (new to me) is a belter. Phil Spector's Christmas album is worth digging out every couple of years. It still mindboggles me that this band took its name from an obscure song by an obscure British band (whom I recall quoting on this channel). My third seasonal offering was premiered on Christmas Day 1734, and received its second public outing in 1857 (wut?). Jauchzet, frohlocket (Rejoice and be joyful), the opening chorus of JS Bach's Christmas Oratorio; in the live performance by Voces8 so that you can marvel at the trumpeters, and see how much fun the bloke on the timps is having.
@@mikesummers-smith4091 Merry Christmas, Mike!
Beautiful version of a classic. Hope all have a great Christmas, and indeed, get home today if not there yet.
@@willhildebrand1313, glad you enjoyed this. Here’s hoping you have a very Merry Christmas!
