Goose bumps every time I hear this. Paul Weller's writing ability at that age blows me away.
The Jam became a movement in the UK. They had an army of fans loyal to the core and they never really stayed static throughout their timeline. They picked up influences all the way through, but the songwriting by Weller was inspirational. He wrote about things that were ll around him at the time, and many have lasted the test of time. The times are different, but the sentiments still resonate deeply. Their best song compositionally was Down In The Tub Station At Midnight.
Amazing band, really great to hear this tune again. I remember going to see these guys play live around 1979 in my local town. Cheers guys!
Just play The whole of Setting sons, it still blows my mind musically and lyrically, how can a 20 year old have the life experience to write like him
Great review guys. A real pivotal Jam song in their singles history....and such a strong political sentiment that was, as you say, of its time....and carried such power. No chance a song like this could ever be no.1 in this day and age. Remember buying the single in early March, here in Belfast, as soon as it came out. And of course, yet another great stand alone single that wasn't taken from an album.

I was in a short-lived punk band when I was 16. We had a great name: The Remedials. Al we did was Sex Pistols covers. I pretended to play the bass. Didn't have a clue what I was doing.

The Jam's breakout year was 1980 only because their record label, Polydor, took 3 years to discover they had signed a great band & finally gave them the full backing they deserved.
To me 1978 was their "breakout year" if that's what you want to call it.

When they first formed the band, Paul Weller was a bass player, & Bruce Foxton was a lead guitarist!!
They, apparently, just swapped roles for The Jam!! 😲

It would be nice to hear some Style Council on the channel, I am not overly familiar, but they had some good tunes.
Really enjoying your Jam discussions. I was one of those who used to 'rush my money to the record shops' for every Jam release. Weller always seemed to be speaking to me and this going straight to number one was a huge moment. I can't pick a favourite Jam song, they all marked different times in my life and are just my soundtrack. I find it hard to believe that 'Dreams of children' was intended to be the 'A-side' as 'going underground' is such an obvious hit, I know it comes from Paulo Hewitt's biography but sounds unlikely to me. Funeral pyre is more advanced musically but it was three years later than this.

Two of my all-time favourite albums feature the legendary Paul Weller.
The Jam's best album (imho), 'Sound Affects', & Paul's more recent covers album, 'Studio 150', both show the depth & breadth of Mr Weller's many talents, as well as the growth in his range, both vocally & lyrically.
Two albums everyone should hear, at least once!
Too late for me though, I've listened to both, many many hundreds of times!
The Gift was their last LP.

Batman theme?
This song in the context of its time - you need to hear and understand the lyrics (I think) to truly appreciate it. To me, it's not a 'fun' song - its a 'cry out loud' about 1980s Britain. I have a bunch of Jam albums purchased at the time - so I can say I'm a fan. Would like you to review That's Entertainment - another lyric driven song. Thanks!

The voice of the angry youth of the UK in the late 70s, early 80s.This was our music.
You missed a lot of the cultural references that are contained within the song, the bleak times we were living through three threat of America and Russia destroying the world with Britain in the middle of their shit fight. The depressed economy,mass unemployment.
You would benefit from listening to That's entertainment
I cannot listen to this song without having Amateur Transplants' "London Underground" parody going round my head.
I'm the same with Joan Jett and sausage rolls.
