Funny how tastes change ...this was the very first 45RPM I bought as a 15yr old kid. But it was it's sister A -Side "A Town Called Malice" I got it for. We've just taken the single out of it's dusty sleeve and you can plainly see how worn and scratchy one side is!! I barely ever played "Precious", but after the passing of all those years and hearing it again, I'd have to say I prefer it. Great innit !!

Great tune and I loved the chat between you guys. Brought back memories of going to school in my parka, that was so big, when I got to class, the fishtail still hadn't left my house! Great times and I wouldn't have it any other way.

The extended 12” version is the bad boy.

I've LIKED Precious for a long long time but I don't think I've ever realised quite how good it is before now. The arrangement is so well constructed to keep your interest throughout. I found it hard to get past the resemblance to Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag at the time. If I recall correctly it came in three lengths, the album version being longer than the 7" and shorter than the 12". I think it's a bit odd that the vocal's mixed so far back, albeit not to the same extent as "Trans-Global Express".

Nice one gents! I was along for the ride the whole way from 77 to 82 and like John said, the signs were there with the brass, backing vocals and funky guitar that Weller was changing direction. I think Bruce and Rick were aggrieved because they were also happy to evolve the Jam sound. Since you've started in 1980, it makes it tricky if you should wish to go back to the earlier years when they were more raw and finding their way, so many great singles from that period.

Thanks CC. There are earlier Jam cuts on my list for Andy which will be coming up. The Jam voyage is far from over!
      Cheers, Jon.

Great song, it's a big yes from me, love it.

Sounds like a soprano sax to me at the end in the higher register, aka the straight horn, popularised in jazz by Sidney Bechet and later by Steve Lacy, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter et al.

Without Paul, this would have been a Pigbag single. The bass and funk sound like Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag. I kid, sort of. I do have a soft spot for this song.

I remember that at the time I found it hard to get past the resemblance, that's long since passed though.

I also instantly think of Pigbag when I hear this song. But this song is way better. If this had been released as a single, it would have been a massive hit, but the Jam had so many great song it must have been hard to decide which ones to release as a single or to which ones to leave as album tracks, or b sides Not many bands have that dilemma, they struggle to find a catchy one which might to be hit.

Could I make a suggestion for fan request. You will know this song Jon. I know you like to play some of the greatest song from England to introduce out American friends to . I think your audience would appreciate one of our greatest groups, The Stranglers, in particular the track Down in the Sewer from their first album Rattus Norvegicus. It has so many twists and turns, and really shows off the band’s versatility.

@@terrysutton8452 I could never stand the gozzing, which I found disgusting - but yes, excellent band, great album.

I enjoyed this, it was a surprise to me as I'm not too familiar with The Jam catalogue and ironically it's more successful to my ears than most of the generic experiments which Paul Weller attempted with The Style Council.

This was one of tracks that was so divisive to the fan base of The Jam. It seemed to garner a Marmite reaction, love or hate? Many felt that Weller had sold out because it came out from so left of field and they weren’t ready for a change of music direction. I have always been a true believer of the mantra ‘Keep calm and trust in Weller’, throughout the last 46 years he has never let me down! Precious was a precursor of where musically, Weller wanted to be at that juncture. Paul understood that unfortunately Bruce and Rick were not the musicians that would help him achieve that vision. Both have spoken publicly on many occasions regarding their lack of appreciation and respect for music of The Style Council. Thus showing further confirmation that the demise of The Jam was a totally necessary act for Weller’s progression and sanity. I loved the track from the first radio airing, along with Town Called Malice, by the great John Peel (RIP). As it was released as a double A side single, which brought The Jam the accolade of playing both of the tracks on Top Of The Pops, being only the second artist afforded that honour along with The Beatles. Fantastic review guys as always, thank you ❤😊

Precious metal is a genre I could well do without, cut glass accents and all.
The best evidence I could find for the wind credits says trumpet and sax, only; and fwiw, that's all I can hear.
Getting a bit towards the funky end for me, but choon! anyway.

Yes, there is definitely a trumpet and I think soprano sax. It would be very hard to get that much control in the upper register of an alto.

Always preferred this to malice, likewise preferred dreams of children to underground
