- The BMW M3 Competition is one of the most powerful sport sedans in BMW's lineup, but how does it compare to an all-electric competitor in the form of the 2022 BMW i4 M50? In this video, Ryan ZumMallen takes a deep dive into these two high-performance BMWs to see if the new i4 M50 can outperform our M3 Competition. Both vehicles sport the M badge, and Ryan sets out to see if the electric i4 can match the horsepower, 0-60 time, and overall awesomeness of the ultra-powerful M3 Competition. Ryan also covers the 2022 i4's range numbers, compares MSRPs, and gives a tour of each car's interior. Does the new 2022 BMW i4 M50 have what it takes to match the performance of the 2022 BMW M3 Competition? Ryan answers this and a whole lot more in our comparison test of the BMW M3 vs. BMW i4 M50.

Are you happy with the way M performance is shifting into the electric space? Tell us what you’d do differently.
Absolutely. Electric is just better to drive and own in every way. You can’t beat the feel and power delivery.
When you said you think something closer to an M performing EV was coming out soon, are you talking about a BMW? pure EV, in this same size class? We already know about the high performance Plug Ins coming out, and the ix M60. I would cancel my i4 order for a faster version with 100 more HP. I want something that traps 130mph and at least keeps up with the M5C.
@@hotrod182 I’m hoping they can come out with something that can trap over 150 and surpass my plaid
@@stepheno.2730 Would you move back to a BMW then? But yes, would be fun. I was doing 40-70mph acceleration runs in the Plaid the other week, posted it on my UA-cam channel.
@@hotrod182 it’s hard to say for sure. Initially, The answer would be an easy, yes but now, I have come to love my plaid.
Maaaan this car is more than enough for the average person it's close to the m3 at half the price in everything and obviously no money for gas. This car is absolutely brilliant
$77k is not half of $108k bro
In DK its like 650k for i4 M50 and 1,6-1,7m for M3
@@christianolsen9781 In Finland >71640€ vs. >146580€ because tax for EV's is 0%
Nice car .I just bought a BMW i4 M550.Picked it up yesterday . I love it .
Brilliant review; honest, fair and points out why it is roughly $25K less than the M3, yet the conclusion is that this is still an excellent BMW. What a fun car for 98% of us (in fact more capable than any of us will ever use nor need). Fine with me that later on there will most likely be a true M i40, but in the interim, I will, and almost every one of us will love this car, e.g., driving it as a M-like great sports sedan right now.
Finally. A short but good review / comparo that acknowledges the lack of torque vectoring on the i4.
Will you be doing a range test for the rwd model soon?
Great review, man!!
Have one coming this summer in Metallic Portimao Blue with cognac interior and carbon fiber trim.
Everyone should just use CLIMATE CONTROL VOICE CONTROL. Easy and simple.
Great review.
Turn off traction control in the i4 the get full power when turning
It dosn’t help. Still limits power unless it’s slippery surface like rain or snow. Even in snow it limits it’s power in a straight line with dsc off
I'd love to know the longer term upkeep cost difference.
Practically almost zero maintenance on an EV
@@ryanlarbi8157 Right tires brakes every 60 or so and you good. Batteries still a concern for me personally however this vehicle would last quite a while before you get that kind of trouble, maybe 120k miles.
@@harrys2331 battery packs on the teslas are lasting allot longer than anticipated. Electric motors can last millions of miles with zero service
No oil changes in the EV, but the brakes may be a dice roll-- regenerative braking eases the workload on the friction brakes, but we are still talking about a 4600-5000 pound car, so those brake pads are really going to feel it if you leadfoot the left pedal a lot.
beautiful video - i've never owned an M but this I4 M50 will be the closest I'll get. I know it's not a real M but it will make me smile regardless.
I don't understand why people are saying its not a real M when the M division is solely responsible for this release? Are we talking about pure race spec version? Thats the only thing I can think of? If that is the case, I don't think anyone would want a race spec version or people will get nauseous every time they ride one. 3 second flat from 0-60 race spec? Hmmm.
@@jordansmith6171 because M in a traditional sense is something you can take to track with. Electric fans get little boners over traffic light launch and quick straight line stuff but that is all they will be good for. They will forever get smoked by ice vehicles on a real track and not near as fun to drive. The M division migrating to electric is no different than anyone else. If they aren’t doing it begrudgingly, then they’re doing it to follow the money or both. It’s become federal regular to transition. They have to. You think Ferrari is enthusiastic to phase out their beautiful sounding engines within 10yrs, of course not, but manufacturers are being heavily incentivized for the trouble. So you can have a bunch of a-holes that think they’re saving the environment or something, but have no problem buying thousands of shares of crypto. What a world!
@@jordansmith6171 the M is supposed to represent Motorsport. They use to be designed for track use and were not as comfortable on the street. They were loved for their driving experience and feedback. Comfort was not as important.
But BMW has migrated the M from Motorsport to just mean sport. They have expanded their audience from driving enthusiasts to the general public. The average person doesn’t want a harsh DCT aggressively shifts gears, the average person wants a smooth car that they can use to get groceries.
They have watered down the meaning of the “M” badge. When people say it’s not a real “M” they mean it’s not really Motorsport focused, it doesn’t offer the most engaging and driver focused experience.
There is nothing wrong with wanting a sports car that is comfortable on the street. They have models for that (Like this m50). But the M cars were supposed to be more agressive and fun. Now it is only the CS GTS that meet the same standards of the old M cars.
That is all, have a nice day.
@@jordansmith6171 Yeah what do people want an m3 electric that goes 0-60 in 2.8 seconds? A lot of the reactions are coming from ICE fans.
@@solidsnake7167 People like you would've defended horses and carriages if you had been born 100 years earlier. "Forever smoked by ice vehicles"? I want to know what you're smoking to say that? EVs already demolish ICE cars in a straight line, and while they still have a ways to go with cornering and weight, they are not at all far off. They're already not being "smoked" by ICE vehicles. "Fun to drive" is purely subjective, so I won't even comment on that.
Ultimately, you want to cling on to a dying technology, go right ahead. If you want to keep pretending that it's superior despite every actual statistic and data point saying otherwise, I can't stop you.
So I've watched a lot of i4 vs whatever and the common complaint is that it feels heavy, it feels slow on corners and doesn't feel agile... I've come to the conclusion that the basis for comparison is always with some of the best handling cars out there. The i4 will still feel excellent to drive to the average driver.
There are better M seats available for M50 (but not as sporty as in M3). Don't know why you had standard sport seats in this car?
I liked the video. Though the steering feel talk is quite boring. Even the 992 has almost no steering feel, so its not only a problem of BMW. You need hydraulic steering if you want proper feel.
Exactly, other than Lotus Evora or Mclaren everything modern car currently on sale has numb steering
I get mine on the 16th and this review makes me think I have made the right choice. I started with a Tesla M3P - which was brilliant, although build quality frustrated me. I bought a Taycan Turbo which is great in all respects other than being too wide (for London streets). I think the i4 M50 will offer the performance and build quality whilst being more practical when on a narrow road with a 4x4 coming in the other direction.
Time for a U-Drag race!
No U-drag?? Nice video!
Can you please comment on how you guys got 268 miles on full charge with M50? My CA at BMW mentioned it was alot lower from EPA range of 227 by at least 20 miles (closer to 200) miles on full charge with the 20 inch wheels. Thanks.!

I saw an I4 m50 parked up here in the UK, had no idea of what it was and had never even heard of them. It looked absolutely beautiful, but it was so bizarre when it silently pulled away.
Did they option it with the M Sport seats? Doesn’t look like it.
No they didn't
I bought the M50 because the insurance is half, the car price is half and the daily usage is half while everything else is within 90% of the dynamics and performance of a real M. Not a real M but still a much better choice than a fossil burner that stays half of the year in the garage... Not everyone needs loud pipe noise and ridiculous grip and i think BMW is hitting a good market share with what they did with the M50. No wonder delivery times are 12 months+ now...
fossil burners feel so outdated in everyday life.
Same! Can’t wait to get mine! Getting the 2023 version this year ”i hope” so they say
I am torn between this and the new dark horse
Interesting.... The seats in the M3 Comp are top of the line. Then they compare to the entry seat in the M50. Odd.
Man really want both of these cars, to be honest.
Close enough performance wise to let the price difference make the decision. Plus, the I4 is way prettier.
Did they review the same steering wheel two times differently?
Stop with the grill scoffs... it's fabulously retro.
Beaver teeth grill is awesome
Its not supposed to be an "M" it is an M Performance"...and quite a good one, at that...
I4 standard is 19” wheels… 20’s are optional
That I4 need some alignment on the front bumper 😂. The gap with the hood on the right side looks horrible. Did you guys crash it? 😅
What color is the M3 Competition? That frost gray is HOOOOOOOT!
7:52 same in teslas.
I was waiting for i4 and had been reading about it for a while. Honestly if it had come out in mid 2021 I would have ordered it. Tired of waiting so I ordered a Tesla Model Y (and ends up still waiting for the delivery). I would definitely come back to check out their second generation of EVs. I am not a car guy, just that I have been driving a Bimmer for a while and like it.
Tesla build quality is horrible.
Model 3 and Y are very generic and kinda ugly.
The Tesla is a good choice, great quality versus the ugly BMW. The Hyundai Iomic 5 is also superior to this ugly half baked effort by BMW.

I think you guys compared this to the wrong BMW. The M440i would be the right car
Why not compare the i4 M50 with the Model 3 Perf?
Because in this video they are comparing two BMW's, read the topic sergei!
What color is that M3?

The M50 is M enough for me. Excellent driver a few months in. EV brake regeneration is actually an improvement on downshifting a manual. Otherwise, any real driver needs a manual for a true "M" experience. Paddle shifters don't count.
It doesn't have an "engine" but does have a "motor",its not propelled by "inertia"...
Correct. An engine generates energy, a motor provides motive power. Oftentimes an internal combustion engine serves as the drive motor as well, but it's not in every application. A diesel-electric locomotive, for example, has a diesel engine to power a generator and an electric motor to move the train.
No drag race? Deeply disappointed...
I've ordered my M50 to be a capable daily performance car with towbar, hatch and the ability to charge at home by soplar panels.
That's why I have never considered the M50 as an M-car, it's an M like an Audi S vehicle and I selected the M50 compared to 440i/440d xDrive and Audi S4 Avant.
I hope that there's an i4M based on the iX M60 powertrain or higher when it's time to replace my M50 in 2024. ;)
Hey. I had the same in mind. I ordered the M50. It is a M Performance Model. Not a real M. And that’s it. As you say - a very capable daily driver with insane quickness and the running costs of my wife’s Toyota Yaris hybrid.
I have driven M3-M4-M5s and Tesla's as well. Both the M3 and the M50 are phenomenal cars. The M3 and M4 well, need I say more? NO! So, the M50 with 536Hp is just insane! It is, however, a car on its own segment. it is Insane as far as built quality; comfort sportiness and aesthetics goes. BMW just delivers in so many different ways, Tesla just does not! Liking or disliking the BIG grill in the front is very subjective. Tesla looks like an egg. Does not mean it's better looking. so there it is very subjective as far as looks go.
An ok car. Rather have better driving character.
Full disclosure I own a g80 m3 comp. Bmw has i4 m50s at the autocross portion of the ultimate drive events. Few observations: it’s not an M car period. It’s fast enough in a straight line but other than that it falls apart quickly. The handling is just not there, the front and back ends of the car seem to be fighting each other, it just doesn’t feel cohesive. Maybe it was the setting they made us drive in too, “b” which is max regen, it might unsettle the car as you come off the brakes (or keep more weight on the front when you want to transfer it rearward). Coming out of a few corners push the accelerator and nothing happens, had to be electronics as the car obviously has instant torque. They are just heavy 5000 plus lbs and no amount of low center of gravity counters that. One other thing typically (in gas powered cars) at the ultimate drives you did 3 laps twice, this time it was 2 laps 3 times which obviously takes a lot longer to get people in and out of cars three times instead of 2. I’m guessing the cars were not capable of running 3 laps in a row constantly. They seem like great cruisers and 90 percent of customers will probably be very happy, but as an alternative to an m3/4 and I cannot agree with that.
True, that’s why BMW made this car for electric customers/buyers out there. I don’t think the “M” is their full focus because then again they already have an M3 and M4 designed for these purposes. That would honestly be a little more pointless to make another “M” based car that is electric since the starting price of the i4 in general is about 55k. Sure there’s an M performance package, but mainly for those who just want an electric BMW “M” or an electric sports sedan. In other means the i4 is not really a true “M” car but however this is one of BMW’s first few vehicles in the electric market.
Sure, i is not M.

"more of a diet M." Yeah, like an all-you-can-eat diet. You labeled a 5000lb car a "diet car"?

Diet M? is the diet cheetos? it is a land yatch, but it is still pretty cool.
Carbon carbon carbon… all those appearance pkg comes in 3900 lb, for a 3ser..
No, since it weighs FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS.
There was no mention of required maintenance. BMW ///M cars are famous for extensive maintenance, especially as the miles add up.
I hate to say it.. but you are talking apples to oranges.. the car is 1K lbs heavier and still has impressive numbers.. IMHO, BMW is limiting what you can do with the car’s power.. I suspect its all about protecting drivers from getting into accidents with all the power that electric motors produce.. If BMW gave you all the power that EV motors produce, you would see a lot of accidents and that would cause many problems for BMW…
Oooooohhhh fancy... BMW is getting back to 90s door handle style. Invocation at its peak.

M badge stands for Marketing
New EV revolution will really accelerate EV development. Prices will come down. EV vs ICE are competitive in msrp already
" Prices will come down" No. That will not happen. Demand is too high. At least until 2028. And at that time nobody will talk about price differences anymore. Why 2028? Thats the year where more EVs than fossils are on the road.
Not an M car, just marketing
Even though no one wants to say it ever on a video, because it's obvious or not seen relevant for some reason, the ONLY reason for i4 to kick the M3 ass is the no direct pollution to the noses of the city people. Nothing else matters. If no pollution, the choice would be M3.

Hi mouth breather, to answer your question, it’s probably for a few reasons. Branding (the grill has always been part of the branding), all the electronics (easier access/replacement than removing the entire front end), and people still like cars with a “face”. The lack of a face, like in Tesla, makes cars look stupid, generic, and ugly.

Yes your blood. Muahaha Muahaha
I'll save you all from watching this video: EVs still cannot match their ICE counterparts from a performance/handling perspective.

@@wolfgangpreier9160 I guess reading is not your strength? Yup. Sounds about right.
The correct counterpart for i4M50 is M440ix. i4 will beat it in performance but M440ix handles better!
If you're one of those people who thinks that this forced transition to EVs is about helping the environment, and that in a few decades private car ownership and driving will just be pretty much as it is now except that everybody will be driving an EV instead of a diesel or petrol car, you're in for a very nasty shock within the next 5-8 years. The forced transition to EVs has nothing to do with helping the environment whatsoever, that's just used as a smokescreen to dupe and manipulate the well-intentioned masses into going along with the forced obsolescence of ICE cars.
The EV obsession exists for two reasons and two reasons only:
1. EVs are far easier and cheaper to fully automate than ICE cars due to their extensive use of drive-by-wire coontrols and their inherent ability to cope with the large power requirements of automation.
2. Electricity is far easier for the state to have total and immediate control over than is the supply of a fuel such as petrol, diesel or hydrogen.
This guy gives a great explanation of why the environmental argument makes no sense: ua-cam.com/video/sytWLB4-W-M/v-deo.html
The i4 would be great if it were cheaper than a Model 3 since the Tesla is quicker, faster, has a charging network, more range, a functioning autopilot etc.
All misnomers. The TM3 is not a better deal after the current price increases
TM3 RWD is $42k base and $54k with FSD
TM3 LR is $51k base and $63k with FSD
TM3P is $58k base and $76k if you add FSD and a metallic paint.
The I4 still gets a $7500 rebate in the US.
There are things on a BMW you cannot buy on a Tesla; HUD, leather, adaptive suspension, laser lights, AirPlay etc. Also if you add FSD to any Model 3 the disparity on price becomes glaring and the BMW is cheaper even loaded. Plus, the quality, fit and finish is not even close. Also, the speed is about the same and Tesla will never be able to match the handling of a BMW.
As of March 2022, in US, there are 1315 Tesla Supercharger locations vs as of February 2022, 7018 Public DC fast charging locations, with the number growing exponentially in the next few years. So there are over 5 times more DC fast charging locations than there are Tesla supercharging locations. So, that's not a selling feature anymore.
Lastly, onto to FSD. BMW system is better. Here's why. Tesla has 8 cameras and they all use vision only. They are blind in fog, and bad weather. BMW uses a combination of vision, lidar, and GPS. Tesla also has no redundancy in vision so it will never be FSD.
Really do your research on the i4. It's a no-brainer against the Tesla.
What does FSD mean if you don’t mind me asking?
@@slobodang7886 Full self-driving.
@Stefan What you call a PR stunt does 90% of my driving. It's no less than a lifechanger. Won't ever buy any car without it again.
But on the other hand, bmw offers quality cabin and looks. Service network. It has pedigree. I would choose bmw all day every day. Period. On cold climate it has also meaning full heater, which tesla is lacking
190 miles range, 5000 pounds, horrendous styling, no this is not an M car or even a proper electric car. I'd take an Albert Bierman Korean car or even a Tesla over these god aweful looking BMW electric cars.
Both are so ugly its hard to get excited, but the M3 would be my choice here. Soulless, heavy EV in the i4 being called an M car is sad. BMW has lost it
Trashy digital instruments in a 'drivers' car. Nope.
DISGUSTING X2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That I4 need some alignment on the front bumper 😂. The gap with the hood on the right side looks horrible. Did you guys crash it? 😅
They probably didn't close it all the way! Ive made that mistake once.
Petrol 💪🏼>electric 🤮🤮🤮
