EV vs ICE drag races don’t get much better than this!
Mat’s lining up in his long-term BMW M3 Competition, and alongside him we have BMW’s all-new electric performance saloon, the i4 M50!
Now the i4 may not be a fully-fledged M car, but it still packs a pump, delivering 544hp & 794Nm of torque from its two electric motors. What’s more, it’s also equipped with four-wheel drive!
In contrast, the M3 seems down on power, with its 3-litre straight-six putting down 510hp & 650Nm. What’s more, it’s only delivering its power through the rear wheels! However, the M3 has one key advantage over the i4 - it weighs 1730kg, whereas the i4 tips the scales at 2,215kg!

My guess is the weight transfer is more balanced on the M3 because you have the engine in the front and the suspension is probably better set up for performance driving. The M50 is a softer road car and the massive power and instant torque sends the weight all to the back with the heavy batteries in the middle lurching towards the rear.
That's what happens when you take out an engine from over the front wheels and replace that weight PLUS 700 kg more further back.

It's scary to think that's only the sDrive M3. It has God-like traction off the line for a RWD car. I can only image how crazy the xDrive M3 must be.

I'd say the xdrive m3 would be slower because of the higher weight and drivetrain losses (over a race longer than 1/4 mile)

@@jackcarline5183 I keep hearing this, but the 50kg makes almost zero difference to the Xdrive M3. Its 0-60 in 3secs and covers 1/4 mile in 11.4s . Its pretty damn rapid. though, the RWD is 'only' around half a second slower.
Please also show the times of the other drag races too. I want to see how they compare and if the cars are consistent

Something really important to note, and why the M3 might appear to be REALLY quick, is that the i4 m50 hard caps at 141mph. I had a press car from BMW and it keeps pulling hard to 141mph then abruptly stops at the limiter

Great comparison. What I'm taking away is that as someone who never really goes beyond three digits on the public roads, the i4 really does have more usable straight-line performance for any journey I'd make . But as someone who's had many a BMW six-cylinder engine in his life I'd still have more fun in the M3
If your at a set of light the petrol would win as shown above.. if it was the awd m3 then that would be a complete slaughtering for the electric car as thats another half a second quicker on the 1/4 straight line.
Got a BMW with a straight six right now and was interested in the i4, but the weight... 370 kg more than a Tesla M3P. That is a serious penalty for not having a dedicated EV platform.
@@Radaos yeah the i4 is just too heavy IMO, the next-generation model with a dedicated electric platform and likely a lower weight will be much more tempting
exactly. doesn't matter one bit to me how quickly they accelerate in "the real world" any modern car is plenty quick enough, and draconian speed limits from the 1930s mean it's kinda a moot point. What matters is feedback, and engagement and feel and involvement. That's why I wish instead of 0-60 times and emissions which don't matter, manufacturers would chase low weight, and hydraulic steering, and manual gearboxes and handling. They do chase grip, but that's different. Every modern performance car has tires that are so wide you get understeer and can't kick the ass out. That's why a subaru brz is more engaging than a corvette, even though the corvette can pull something crazy like 1.2g.
@@Radaos To be fair it doesn't matter, to me anyways. Doesn't matter if they make em lighter, doesn't matter if they make em cheaper, or faster, or less hideous. I want a real engine, with engagement and responsiveness. EV's will never have that, and they're so unnecessary to begin with. If the earth really would boil itself to death in a few years, sure, maybe let's do electric cars. But all of the politicians that are okay with absolutely ruining cars in the name of a few "environmentalist" brownie points, keep hoovering up beachfront property so clearly they know something that lots of folks seem not to lol

Won't be that bad for the petrol car. For electric cars the way you drive has a huge effect. Going 70mph vs 60mph will cost 100miles off the range.

The i4 has so much traction issue with the front lift. Airbag suspension issue? Also, never got to see the i4 cluster to see if launch control was used, and what was the SOC?

The most important thing you need to know about EVs is that they accelerate as fast as the manufacturer decides. The weight difference between a 200kW motor and a 400 kW motor is negligible, and everything else is decided by the software. A nerd with BO & acne presses a button to change performance in an EV - whilst with a petrol car engineers have to work hard to make a difference.
So if a petrol M3 beats, matches, or loses to its electric stablemate, then that is entirely down to decisions made in a boardroom.
That is true but battery tech is still fairly primitive. Li batteries massively overheat if you pull too much current out of them so the current draw need to be limited.
EV’s accelerate really quickly a ‘few’ times then their batteries overheat.
It’s not the manufactures making them slow it’s the tech
You mention weight of the motor but that’s irrelevant, it’s the batteries that make them heavy.
The electric car is still years away from being truly viable because they’ve been rolled out too early.
They’re being charged with 60% fossil fuels (on a good day when the wind blows) and their lifespan is less than that of an ICE as once their battery dies at around 7 years or so depending on use it’ll write the entire car off.

@@mtagain5088 Sure, sure. That must be why an eight year old Tesla S still sells for around £35K. And in its eight years of life so far has saved its driver around £15K in fuel costs, which would provide a decent financial cushion for any refurb work that might need doing in the future

He was talking about Volvo giving details on the offset of EVs vs fossil cars , something like a petrol car would have to travel 80k kilometers before it would match the environmental impact of building the electric vehicle in the first place !!! so certainly strange that the government are pushing this EVs cars , technically they’re doing more damage before they even driven or leave the dealers lot ?

Fossil fuels are burnt up and gone forever. Batteries can be recycled...Think harder. Think of the future. It IS strange that govt's are pushing EVs when most gov'ts have ties to big oil, so I don't get it but EVs are better for people imo. It's even stranger how people seem to be resisting EVs in the name of big oil ICE cars that pollute (which is a real problem unlike clim4t3 cr1sis), are noisy, greasy and overcomplicated.

This for me shows why high performance EVs may be fast, but they are not sports cars yet. The i4 is carrying nearly half a ton more weight around and it shows. Even with more power, more torque and 4WD, the i4 is just outclassed.
EVs have usually just single gear and are tuned more for real-life use, so rather for acceleration than max speed.
I know they don't have the drama of ICE cars but it's bloody impressive some of these electric cars.
You think in real world driving this M50 will certainly give the M3 a run for its money!!
While being tax free (for now), and you can charge it for free while doing your shopping, crazy times!
