    Our new BMW i4 //M50 is straight out of the box and to work! Today my trip takes me to Amersham to collect a Tesla Model 3 Performance … so it’s a perfect chance to compare the two!
    Both on 20” wheels, we can drive these side by side at the same time on the same roads and the same speed and get a true real world efficiency comparison in head to head conditions.
    Plus I start this day with the BMW only having 35 miles on the clock so it’s a chance to give it a run out and give my first impressions / review. It’s been a while since I had the use of a press car for a couple days, much warmer weather, so maybe the efficiency will be better and it will be interesting to consider how the BMW is to live with…
    These are two very fast electric sports cars but with a decent dose of family practicality.

    I've received mine in mid-may and actually ended up selling M3P and keeping the i4 M50. Those 20" really kill the range, I'm driving it on the 18" 858 rims and the range is simply amazing, driven back from Belgium into NL today, 18.5c, dry, some side wind, 110-140kmh with some sprints to 160kmh, 280km driven over about 2.5 hours (yeah there was like 10min traffic as well), and a consumption of 17.9kwh / 100km - this is really good.

    Nice car no question but it’s hard to see at £75k. Range poor, 230miles on 100% and preconditioned…that’s 184 miles with 80% in mild weather. For this money it should at least match the “3” Performance for range never mind the Long Range 3.

      If you want 300 mile range simply go for the cheaper 40 variant. I don't see the problem.

      Tesla M Performance is fitted with four 235mm wide tyres on 20 inch which is less even than BMW standard spec 19’ that have 245front 255rear.
      BMW has two options of 20 inch:
      Symons has 868s that are 255mm front and 285mm rear. These give a -16% range loss compared to standard 19’ 245/245mm rims.
      There is the 20’ 862 wheel option (245f 255r) that give -5% range compared to 19’ standard wheels.
      So expect at least -20% range only due to different tyre widths between the Tesla and BMW on 20 inch wheels.
      If you then want to compare efficiency (apples to apples) you add -30% for weight difference.

      @@durlacher1826 you don’t see the problem ! I don’t think you own an EV do you ?
      Charging is only fast between 20 and 80% SOC.
      So if your car ( non Tesla 😂) only has a “real “ mile range … that puts you into the “slow” parts of the battery charging envelope!

      @@maxflight777 What's your point? The 20-80% rule is also true for Teslas. I've driven many different EVs and unlike you also outside of the Tesla universe. That's how I know that Hyundai, BMW and others aren't stuck in 2014 anymore. You can get super efficient EVs other than Tesla with some of them having better charging performance even and the super charger network is also becoming less and less of a competitive advantage. There's a guy that drove his i4 down to Croatia without issues and he managed 4 miles per kWh - something which you claim is impossible (/watch?v=WBGVvJ_4hMw). I'm not the one making baseless assumptions here - that's you.

    I was chosing between i4, Model 3 and Polestar 2. I picked Polestar 2 with performance pack even though it's made in China because BMW pricing is out to lunch and that front end is so UGLEE. Model 3 was great but no rebates but that's my second choice.

    • @hotrod182
      @hotrod182 2 роки тому +4

      Yes, but in either case, even with the huge 285 section tires, the i4 meets its 227 Mi EPA rating. With the 19" wheels, plenty of reviews show it equaling or surpassing 270 miles and the overrated M3P. Remember, BMW is conservative. The Tesla M3P is supposed to be like 1/2 second quicker 0-60, when in real life they are within a .10-.20 second difference. Also, i4 M50 definitely beats the M3P 0-200kmh, and 100-200kmh. Believe it or not, that 100-200kmh acceleration is probably much more real life to me than drag racing from a stop in which it is a drivers race anyways. If the BMW gets the one to two tenth of a second jump, the Tesla won't catch it. I had a Model YP next to me and he couldn't even catch up to my front bumper at any time even from a dead stop to 70mph.

    I ordered an i4 eDrive 40 M Sport (quite a mouthful). Chose that over the M50 for the substantially lower weight, better range, and reportedly better driving dynamics. The front is ugly, which is a reason to own one since you can’t see the front when driving. I’m disappointed that the M Sport trim, which is necessary to get the best suspension, requires upsized 19” wheels. I don’t mind ugly 18s since they’re also not visible to the driver and add about 7% range over the 19s. I hope the aftermarket will eventually offer lightweight forged and aero 18s for this car to mate with EV-specific, but not too terrible tires.

    Tesla owner for a year now. no complaints. Previously owned many BMWs. I actually think 'we' should open up some of the charging network to non-Teslas. My main concern is - for example, something that happened to me a couple of weeks ago on a business trip to Holland. There were 2 non Teslas charging when I arrived at a Supercharger. (One i3 & an Audi from memory) They were actually blocking 4 bays - so unless the charging port is on the 'correct' side couldn't there be some sort of female to male charging cable extender cable that these owners could purchase to avoid this issue? Also, the Supercharger cables are quite short so this might help with this issue too?

    Pros:
    - Leather interior looks comfortable, and UI looks cleaner than some other legacy cars I've seen, that's good.
    - Comfortable suspension, BMW tend to go more "sporty" suspension, but looks like this one is geared more toward a smoother ride. I don't mind a sporty feel, but I do prefer a medium balance personally, so this may be a good middle ground approach with the hybrid mechanical + air suspension setup.
    - Good noise isolation. It probably costs in terms of weight but it seems the balance here was tasteful, worth the tradeoff.
    Cons:
    - Built on a shared platform with ICE, so not an optimized EV design, that sacrifices some interior/storage space and efficiency in return for less factory retooling costs. We see signs of that in the high weight of the car and the need for a bigger battery pack yet still less range on the table - though one cannot discount the effect of software optimization playing a role here in favor of Tesla's platform, the "Silicon Valley" advantage if you will.
    - Internals are a bit old school. Clunky retro controls in the age of iPads.
    - Apple Carplay is nice, but oftentimes used as a bandaid when the car itself lacks solid enough built-in infotainment features to stand on its own.
    - BMW really need to reign in this big kidney grill fetish of theirs lol.

From what I’ve seen online, the M50 just seems like a poor car if you want range - the 40 seems to be a much better balance of still good performance but better range (on smaller wheels too). But if you don’t need the range and want the performance (and if you’re used to M ICE cars you’ll be used to filling it up fairly often), then this may appeal. I’d have seriously considered the 40 if it was 50k with more toys, but was 53k base and a lot of needed options so just too rich for me. maybe the next one will be a little more sensibly priced

    The annoying thing about traditional car manufacturers making EVs is that: they normally have terrible range.
    That said, I love the interior of the EVs made by the likes of BMW, Mercedes & Audi: they feel like a place you would want to be.
    Tesla needs to up their interior game, that said the tech in a Tesla is supreme.

    You know…. It wouldn’t be as bad if the price for that 4 series converted into an EV wasn’t so much more money. It makes zero sense . Pay much more , deal with a dealership (order with phone then have car delivered to ur home! ), get less range , less tech , heavier car ? I mean , at least under cut the tesla in price by a little so ppl buying them don’t seem so ignorant. It’s just like paying $1500 for a blackberry phone instead of the $999 iPhone. What ? Why ? Who ? Lol.

    You cannot escape the laws of physics on real world range and doing an EV drivetrain swap on what is basically an ICE car will inevitably result in more weight than a ground up design - especially a Tesla. So similar in that respect to my Mercedes EQC 400 AMG Line which gets much the same sort of range and also now retails for nearly £73K (with a lot less extras than the M50i with the added packs) … quite an increase given it was £67K when I got it 12 months ago! Having said that I cancelled my Tesla order to get the EQC because personally I prefer comfort and premium brand styling, but if I was doing regular long trips then I think the Tesla is still the only option.

    • @alanmay7929
      @alanmay7929 2 роки тому +1

      Lol….. it’s actually very possible to achieve more range on Ice platform converted to ev by using things like lighter materials more aluminum for example. Most ICE uses mainly steel and are still lighter than EVs because of the batteries.

    • @alanmay7929
      @alanmay7929 2 роки тому +1

      The Mercedes’ EQC was a very bad execution of ICE to EV conversion. They put way tooo much features in that car and used a dedicated frame to contain the electric motors and components instead of using the normal ICE subframe for example. The solution is a mix of light materials.

    I'm a BMW guy but after a year I cannot reconcile with these ugly BMW EV's. The i4, iX, i7 are just so hideous and ugly. That Model 3 in low spec trim looks mediocre but in Performance trim looks great and would be my choice between these two. Why does the BMW have a great long bonnet but no frunk? Why does it have a transmission tunnel but no transmission? Why does it have rear cutouts for tail pipes but no tailpipes? Because it's a rushed fudge gas car they tried to make electric and is a monument to how unsophisticated consumers will pay more for an vastly inferior product if it has perceived status.
