BMW i4 M50 v Tesla Model 3 Long Range. 425 mile trip (same as London to Edinburgh) comparison

  • Hi everyone. So come along for the day with me as I cover 425 miles in the BMW i4 M50 with the 20” wheels.
On the way back we can compare efficiency / economy and real-world range v Tesla Model 3 Long Range with 19” wheels.
The smaller wheel option on each would be more efficient for both.
I can also give you some of my review and opinion of the i4 during this trip. We go to Suffolk and back covering 425 miles which is the same distance as London to Edinburgh so a good way to see just how much charging time is needed for such a journey!
Tesla is always the king of efficiency but how will the BMW i4 dual motor M50 compare..?
    Thanks for watching

Having run Tesla Model S P85 for 9 years 125,000 uk miles its the efficiency of the Tesla drive trains coupled with the Supercharger Nework operating in real time with the Sat Nav that makes everything so easy but to top it all off the Sat Nav I have now is leagues better than when I bought the car. Its Teslas never ending improvement over the air updates that just keep surprising and its FREE. I doubt any other manufactures will seriously constantly improve at this pace........Tesla wins hands down, the Tesla you own now will always be better than the Tesla you bought, the longer you keep it the better it gets.

As a tesla owner I find constant OTAs annoying. Sure the first few added some great features, but lately they keep making the UI worse and worse. I've been refusing updates for over a year now. I suspect a company like BMW will only do updates when needed, instead of feeling like they need to constantly change things just to please their short attention span customers like tesla does.

The wheels on the i4 M50 do indeed make a big difference. I have an M50 with 19-inch wheels, and I recently took it on a 1,200 mile road trip. I achieved an average efficiency of 3.4-3.5 miles/ kilowatt hour while driving at 70 to 80 mph. Although the 20-inch wheels look sportier, I think that most drivers interested in range will opt for the 19-inch wheels due to the apparent increase in range of 40 to 50 miles.

Great vid! I did a trip of 226 miles motorway mainly in my 2021 model 3 LR last week at 29c outside temp. My car has acceleration boost too and came home having had the car on Sentry for 7 hours at work as well as remote climate to 16c (from 58c!!!) before I left with 24% and I wasn't going steady or slow at any time so had just over 85 miles predicted range at home by the end left, so they will do 300 miles without going slow everywhere. Interesting the predicted % at destination on the latest nav update was spot on... to the exact %. Always enjoy your videos Richard! I've owned full EVs for 5 years now, starting out with a Zoe, then settling into Hyundai for a number of years, I'm massive fan of the IONIQ, despite it's small battery it is superbly efficient but at the beginning of the year I ordered a M3 RWD, but following lots of push backs the car won't arrive until Nov/Dec, so I purchased a pre-owned M3 LR MY21. The best bit is the retailer didn't advertise the full spec, so when I took delivery I discovered it has Enhanced Autopilot plus the Acceleration Boost - I thought it was ridiculously quick when I originally test drove it.

I've not used the factory Sat Nav in my beemer since getting it 6mnths ago. Teslas live and die by their touchscreen (lets face it, theres not a lot else theyve got) and subsequent mapping system. BMWs (coming from the ICE age) and like most ICE cars have not had to depend upon knowing where the nearest cable is to plug into as range anxiety (back then ;-P) was much much less of a thing.

My personal preference for a better built, allround quality package inside and out puts it ahead of the Model 3 infact any Tesla for that matter. However nobody has managed to bring that 'Apple' "ive gotta have one" feeling to their product like Tesla has. Theres a coolness to the product that no ICE manfacturer can match. If you spend some time in the i4 settings you can adjust more stuff for the assisted driving. You can (for example) have the speed limit be automatic (vs the manual confirmation) and also add some buffer (e.g. Automatically set cruise control to „speed limit + 5“ which makes flowing with the traffic more natural - at least here in germany).
I‘m also hoping that BMW watches some of those videos and improve the navigation and route planning in upcoming updates. (BTW: There was an update planned dedicated to the route planning for july 2022 - maybe we‘ll be seeing some improvements then).
Sidenote for efficiency: I‘m driving the M50 with 19“ and effective range is 450km on a full battery (280miles) on long distances, driving at 130km/h (80mph) - in comfort mode (have not tested the eco mode yet and i also like to drive a bit more „dynamic“) 😎

Apart from once I stopped to eat on the way too, so never really cared my real life range was 230+ miles.
So generally 2x 15min stops for pee/coffee ... and a min 30mins for some food.

Sat Nav that doesn't confidently know and inform on rapid chargers along a route, for example. And there's Voice Commands as well. And it is not the solution to give up and go to Apple Car Play or Android Auto. These cars need to have better onboard software in important areas if they are going to seriously challenge Tesla on at least the ergonomic/user friendly front. To say nothing about efficiency.

In real world testing from 100-0% this is the true range from multiple youtubers that went 70mph:

For a car that came out 5 years after the Model 3, i feel it still missing the ball often, way too often for a legacy brand as BMW. I would expect these differences from a brand like KIA or Hyundai but not from BMW with a 20k+ higher purchase price.

This is massive difference in economy - 25% more efficient! Add to that Tesla is cheaper (much cheaper), more practical, kills the BMW when it comes to tech and you realize its really a one horse race. A BMW would never be as cool as a Tesla to someone who has grown up in the era of iPhone's and iPad's and so turns out the germans are for the boomers ;)
You may be able to make a car close enough to Tesla but how do you compete with Tesla the software company? No one does software better than Silicon valley.

BMW will get there. This is still by all accounts a conversation from an ICE. The next generation will be the interesting one. The comfort and interior far superior in the BMW although Porsche personally in my view build the best pure EV just now and that is being behind Tesla in efficiency but then its more performance focused and I don’t mean in a straight line. A Tesla simply couldn’t keep up with the Porsche say in an pass in the Alps or Twisty highland B road but would probably roast it straight to 60.

@@SWR112 The iX is on its own EV-platform.
It has no frunk, a small trunk, less space than a Model Y while being more than half a ton heavier despite a carbon construction, meh performance, meh efficiency, meh everything and a big price tag.
We should get ready to accept that "BMW will NOT get there".
A Tesla Model 3 Performance could EASILY beat a completely naked base Taycan without all the fancy OPTIONAL suspension parts, wheels and bigger brakes - for 40% less money with 50% more power...
"Porsche personally in my view build the best pure EV" seems questionable.
Edit: before you reply with "but Porsche quality!!!11" I'd like you to once more think about the price and then maybe read a few Porsche Forums about the issues people have with their Taycans from blinkers no longer making a sound to being forced to stop on the motorway with various error messages.

The BMW is also heavier, much wider tires, more solidly built, and better to drive. So it did quite well. It is also much more powerful than the LR Tesla. This M50 walks a Model 3P in the 100-200kmh test, much less the LR version, lol.

@@hotrod182 I know these cars, drove them extensively. The BMW is about 400kg heavier than a Model 3 Performance and you can feel it. The Tesla is quicker in almost all disciplines and of course much faster on the top end. Lightweight is a huge fun factor too. Only advantage of the BMW is the more comfortable ride. Rest is disappointing.

@@hotrod182 Why we comparing a 86k car to a 60k car and say it walks it?
      - A lot of reviews say the BMW steering is slow and not responsive, opposite of what BMW is known for.
      - You saying a 544hp car is quicker then a 480hp car, so weird but lets forget it 23% higher purchase price? Add that price in favor of Tesla and the Model S plaid walks the BMW in comfort mode. On track I bet the Model 3 performance easy outruns the BMW, duo to weight and steering feedback.
      - 90% of people that even plan to buy this car will buy the I4 edrive 40, not this overpriced M50. With that price range it cost as much as the Tesla Model 3 performance(both same options) and it has more then 100hp less. So yeah so much for BMW walking the Tesla right. Price vs performance the BMW is doing a very bad job.
      - For the solidly build, its 4 series that is priced like a 6 series. For 80k+ car i would expect A LOT better interior of a brand like BMW. Only advantage BMW has over Tesla is the HUD and the air suspension.
If BMW and Tesla came out with these cars as their first cars, no person would buy the BMW. But atm BMW is hoping it brand name is keeping it legacy going not their tech or innovation.
