Manage Smart Lock Codes in SmartThings App (2020)

- In this video, I will show you how to add and remove smart lock codes right in Samsung SmartThings. You don’t need anything custom to do this as it built right into SmartThings app. This will work with any Z-Wave or Zigbee smart lock that displays the “Works with SmartThings” logo on the packaging.
By assigning codes to people in SmartThings you will be able to get notifications of who unlocked your smart locks and when. This is helpful in many ways and is easy to get set-up and working.
I am showing how to do this in the New SmartThings App because this is no longer an option in the Classic SmartThings App. If you already have the lock manager installed in the Classic SmartThings App it will still work. You will need to be sure that you are using the correct SmartThings device handlers also so I will also show you how to check and change them if needed.

How will you use this built-in SmartThings feature?
IN 2023 SAMSUNG REDESIGNED THE APP NOW IT'S NOWHERE TO BE FOUND
I could not figure out how to do it. This vid give a great explanation from start to finish. Now I can program codes on my smart locks in my properties from anywhere! Yahoo!
Enjoy! Now you have full control over your locks right from smart things.
Thank you for this super helpful video! Had a very difficult time transitioning to the newer Smart Things app because it's not as straight forward for lock code management. Adding the Smart Lock Guest Access Smart App saved us; thank you!
Awesome! I’m glad I could help you out and get your lock code management on lock 🔑
Super helpful! Thank you so much!
You are welcome Katherine!
This worked perfectly. YOU are the man
Awesome 👏
Love this. Great step by step.
Glad you liked it!
Very helpful video. Thanks for posting!
Thank you! You are very welcome!
Thank you so much for your time creating this amazing video. It was very easy to follow and I created all of the codes with no problems. Keep the videos coming. I would like to know if I can put this into action tiles?
You can add your locks. As far as controlling the codes etc probably not.
Thank you.
Brilliant Man
You are very welcome!
Extremely helpful! Was very frustrated that I couldn't use all the lock features initially. This video clearly explained how to acces them. I'm curious if you can set an expiration or make a one-time code without having to manually delete?
Excellent! I am glad you got it figured out and it is working. Its functionality is quite limited so I don’t think you can do one time codes or have expiration dates.
I'm using a property management software that will do this for me and I can see it taking place within smartthings , but I don't see any way to set it up to expire using this method found in this media.
Yea I think you just have to delete the codes if no longer needed.
Great video. Thank you.
Why doesn't the app show the name of the person whose code was used to unlock the door?
The app also shows constant lock and unlock statuses. I guess that's when the hub is checking for status. Is there a way to remove them or filter them out? It makes it hard to see when the code is being used.
Unfortunately there is not a lot of customization with the smart app. But it does allow you to lock and unlock all of your doors all at once and see the status is of each. Also once each person unlock the lock you do get a notification of who unlock the lock if a code was used.
Like others have said, thanks for this video. I live in the US, but can't the Guest code app in the list. I have tried to see if my hub somehow thinks it is out of the US, but I think it is correct. Someone below said to delete and readd the Smartthings app, but I am loathe to do that. How can i get this Smart App?
If you uninstall the SmartThings app and reinstall the SmartThings app the only thing you will need to do is log into your Samsung account and it will be back to the way you left it. Not sure why it’s not showing. Mine is working as shown in the video but I haven’t uninstalled it since then.
Hi! Quick question... So I just bought the Eufy smart lock with a wifi bridge (Eufy Security Smart Lock Touch, Fingerprint Keyless Entry Door Lock) ... Will this app work for my smart lock if its installed in the Dominican Republic and I want to add/remove codes from the USA? Please let me know! thanks for your time!
Only if you can add it to smart things.
Thanks for the video. After installing the new smartthings app, I couldn't manage users and codes as before. Now, will this smartapp notify me when a user uses the code and will it keep a history?
Great! Yes it will keep the history and notify on each code entry.
LOVE THIS Video! I am sorry I did not find this earlier. Do you have any videos to troubleshoot Lock Code error. I tried to invite guest. I follow the steps, Add Guest Name, I select lock and put a 4 digit code in and get, " Something Went Wrong Try Again message. Thank you so very much.
Can you do other things to your lock? It’s possible that your lock may not be compatible with that function.
I recently switched from Wink to Smartthings due to the ongoing Wink issues and the fact they continue to charge $5 / month for the service being down several times a year. In wink for my schlage zwave lock I was able to configure and update the lock settings not just the user codes, it doesn't seem possible to see those features (ie beep on / off, setup user code length settings, etc)
For alerting I was able to setup notifications based on the codes used. For example Guest 1 code used sent notification. This doesn't appear to have the same granularity or am i just missing something? I get notified for all codes used.
Yea this one is more basic. You can change codes but no time limits and you get all notifications. There used to be better options but not on the new SmartThings yet.
In Sweden yale don't support Z-Wave or zigbee but is it anyway to add yale hub into smartthings to get around this? 🤔
Well, that stinks. I don’t think there is another way to link you to SmartThings. What you might need is a Wi-Fi lock that can connect to SmartThings using the cloud. You just have to be sure that that lock is supported.
I am considering switching from Nexia to Smart Things. In Nexia, I can schedule activation and deactivation time for the lock codes. Is Smart Things able to do this?
It’s not possible directly in the SmartThings app but you might be able to do this using a paid 3rd part SmartApp.
I couldn't find the RBOY's Lock User Manager in GitHub, that was used to previously manage my locking codes. Will I need to find a new lock code manager?
And after following all the steps, I was able to add guest codes, but they deleting on their own after about a minute?
I think that the RBoys abs should still be out there somewhere. I think you need to go to their website and pay their fee.
If the lock manager Is not working as shown in the video restart your hub and your app and try again.
hey Justin thank you so much for this video I have been trying for months to install this guests access app in the new smarthing Samsung app and I have contacted the customer support to but no matter what I do it doesn't show in my available apps how can I solve this ?
right now I'm still using the old version but soon I'm not gonna be able to use it anymore
there is a way to make show the app in the menu?
thank you again for the video
You may need to start fresh in the new app. Just delete everything from your classic app and try it only in the new app.
@@SimplySmart123 thank you so much for your response I have one more question if I do that what's gonna happen with all the automation I have in core I'm gonna lose all them?
You don’t needed to remove the devices. Just the lock manager and all codes from the lock manager. Just start fresh with the lock manager.
@@SimplySmart123 thank you again Justin I will try to do that and we'll see how it goes I really appreciate your help in this
thank you!
This was helpful. Are the codes stored on the lock or in smartthings? (If I lose internet access, will these guest codes still open the door?)
Nevermind. I just tested it (by unplugging the hub) and it still worked, so this seems like these guest codes will work even if you look power or internet so the lock can't contact the hub.
Yea it’s stores in the lock. Pretty sure. It’s just away in to make modifications.
Great video, in my case I don’t have any smart apps to add in the list. Do you have a video how to add those smart apps to the Samsung smarttthings app. It used to be so easy with smartthings classic app.
Are you talking about the standard SmartThings Smart Apps? If so they might not be supported in your region. Otherwise, custom smart apps are done the same way as in the classic app.
Maybe it is a region. Do you know if there is a way to change region? I think I accidentally set it up somewhere else 5-6 years ago while all my 4 smartthings hubs set up in US California address.
Well if they are in the USA you should have all of the options that I have...
Well, thanks again. I had to open new account US and reconnect all devices and the hub and all smart ups available now. It was randomly set up on prior hub account location to Ukraine and Samsung said there is no way to change that so I had to register new account and start from scratch. Now 3 more hubs to go. What a pain.
😱
I wiped the codes in the lock awhile back and set this up. Now every time somebody comes into the house, I get a notification. Which I don't want, but haven't figured out a way to get rid of short of resetting the lock and setting a code straight into the lock itself. Seems the "guest" codes always notify. Is there a way to disable that I haven't found?
Unfortunately this built in smart app doesn’t have many options. So you will get a notification each time a code is entered.
Hello, great video. Do you know the process to fix a lock that is showing as offline? How do I get that lock back online?
You can try to remove the batteries and replace them with new batteries. Sometimes just resetting the device will fix the issue. It also depends on your set up. Worst case you can do a factory reset on the device and reset it up.
Is there a way to add the same code for multiple doors simultaneously (without having to do each one)?
You would need to do each lock independently. This SmartApp doesn’t have very many options but hopefully they will make it better over time.
Great video. But I am not showing the smart lock guest access app in the list of apps I can upload. Have they removed it? If so is there a different app to use?
Are you located in the United States? In some countries, they don’t allow some smart apps for some reason...
@@SimplySmart123 After reloading my app on my iphone, the smart lock feature came up. With the help of your video, everything is up and running. Thank you.
Great! They keep messing with the app which keeps things confusing...
What front door locks do you recomended with smarthings
Any compatible lock should be good. But I love the Yale locks. I have three of them. They work flawlessly and look so clean.
Is there a way to schedule a code? I have a vacation rental and would like to send a code when a guest arrives and then delete it after they check out. Any suggestions are welcomed! Thanks for this video too!
This integration is very basic. I might suggest a WiFi lock like UltraLoq store.u-tec.com/pages/ultraloq-u-bolt-pro-bluetooth-enabled-fingerprint-and-keypad-smart-deadbolt. I have this for my vacation rental and does exactly what you are looking to do. Works great.
@@SimplySmart123 Wish I had seen this one before I bought the Schlage! Have you heard of ResortLock? It is supposed to integrate and assign lock codes within airbnb and vrbo.
I have heard of it but I haven’t tried it.
Can you set it up to turn on a lock code at 1 pm on Thursday and then delete the code at 11am on Sunday (for example)?
I don't think so. The smart app is very basic. There are some smart apps that might be able to do that out there.
Can you set it up to automatically activate a code at 1pm next Thursday and delete the code at 11am next Saturday? (For example)
I don't think so. The smart app is very basic. There are some smart apps that might be able to do that out there.
Thank you so much I try to do this before but I did not went into the website
Your device handler should be correct but it’s best to check before trying.
I think it's correct I went into the link that you linked and I followed every step that you did and I already tested and it works
Curious if anyone knows how to edit codes in SmartThings now with the new app is it even possible now?
It works the same way in the new app. Just tap on Locks in the upper left corner and choose lock codes.
Doesn't work with Schlage Connect smart locks. Wanted to change the codes like with the classic app but this doesn't work. The new app sucks compared with the Classic app.
Yeah. Hopefully, they will fix the new app it's better than the classic soon.
Looks like ST has updated again. The smart apps is now located under automations. If you add a routine under discover the smart apps are there. But not the guest access … suggestions ?
You are correct! They keep on updating things to make it confusing when you watch my videos. All the smart apps are under the automations tab and the smart lock access should be there. Are you in the United States? Smart apps can vary from country to country.
@@SimplySmart123 Yes I am in TX. On the app, the smart lock guess access shows on the lock icon from the home screen... but when I try to add an access code, the lock does not show up. I did the first step in the video and it was already showing Z-wave under type, so I just updated it (although I didnt really change anything). It's a schlade lock.
It’s possible that that lock may not be compatible.
Is the smart lock access under something else? I do not see it.
I think they moved it to the life tab at the bottom. Once in a lifetime you can hit the + at the top and you should be able to add smart apps that you don’t have installed yet.
Hi - I have a Aeotect smart home hub and 2 x yale locks connected via z-wave. the locks and hub are both showing up in smartthings. My problem is that I can't get Smart Lock Guest Access - it's not an option either through adding a service, life and there is no option to add an app. Do you have any advise - I am on an Iphone. I have also tried it on my windows PC but the app on that is more then useless
I think it’s under the Life Tab at the bottom of the SmartThings App. Are you in the United States?
@@SimplySmart123 No in New Zealand. It's not under the life tab - it's just not there. I have tried 2 x Iphones and a samsung now as well. SmartThings just isn't giving the option. I have contacted the samsung helpdesk - my fault has been escalated to level 2 - still waiting to hear from them.
It may not be available in your region. I don’t know why they do this it seems like it would be very easy to have available in all countries but that is not always the case.
@@SimplySmart123 I wish Samsung would say definitively - that would be helpful - stop me chasing ghosts !
For sure. I think their customer support is overwhelmed but should be a simple answer!
Is this working on 08/2022? I’m trying to use the IDE with my account but I can’t see any of my devices.
I have a Kwikset 916 zigbee. I can see it online in my SmartThings app but I can’t see any option as lock/unlock, etc
Are you saying you can see your lock and SmartThings but there are no lock options in SmartThings?
@@SimplySmart123 it worked!!! Now, you have to select your hub from the “location” tab and then you will be able to see your devices, after that you only have to follow this awesome video!!!!!!!
Perfect!
They keep changing the page. WTH? I was able to set a guest code just a few weeks ago. Now the smart lock guest access page doesn't work.
They are still going through a lot of changes. Hopefully it will settle down in 2023.
I am using the new SmartThing app. Same one you show. I am new to this. I have a Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt. I can lock and unlock the door remotely using the app. When I go to use Smart Lock Guest Access and Add a Lock Code the lock that I can effectively lock and unlock using the app does not show up in the "Assign to Lock" field. I only have one lock connected to the SmartThings Hub. Any suggestions on how to get it to show up so I can manage Lock Codes?
Did you check to be sure the proper device handler is selected in the IDE as show in the video?
@@SimplySmart123 Thanks for the reply. I have gone into the Groovy IDE, then into devices (NOT device handlers) and had previously changed the Type to "Z-Wave Lock". So, that is and was done. If I go into the Device Handler option, there is nothing there. Should there be anything in the Device Handler tab?
No you did it correctly because you are using a standard SmartThings device handler. What country are you in?
Update - I called tech support. I deleted the Smart Lock Guest Access app and then reinstalled it and everything worked.
I am now trying to figure out how to share a lock code with a guest after I previously set it up. You can share it right when you set it up. Trying to figure out how to share it after. Also, trying to see how I can see what the Lock Codes are.
I am located in Latin America, and it does not work for me, what you propose!
What can I do, since with the new application I lost control of opening remote codes with yale z-wave, and I can't find a solution, thanks,
Javier
You can look into other Smart Apps but I have not tried any others.
@@SimplySmart123 Thanks for your answer! What happens is that smart app does not appear, when I consult them, like what you show in the video, where many appear and you can choose the corresponding one. I do not know what happens, but the only step I can follow in your video is the first, where I enter the account, and I can see the configuration of my lock!
When I get to invite guest I don't get the option of even picking my lock. It says no locks online
All of you locks should automatically be added. Did you check your device type of the lock?
Did Smartthings remove the Guest access smart locks SmartApp? I had it thanks to this video and it was awesome. But now I can't find it.
Mine is still showing in the app. But I don’t see where it shows to add it any longer unless it doesn’t show things that are added already.
@@SimplySmart123 I added it when I first viewed your video about two months ago (HUGE thank you, btw) but I don't see it anywhere now. It's just gone. I wanted to add a code and I have no way to add it without going right to the hardware. weird.
Try to add it to your favorite screen. They keep on messing with the app and confusing everyone.
@@SimplySmart123 Its in the life tab now !
Yes!
Now I feel way better
👍
Hey man, i liked the video, but for a reason when I want to add the "Smart lock guest access" i can't find it, there's lots of smartapps but can't find the guest access, any help?
Are you in the new app for the classic app?
I am using the newest smartthings app. However I am not sure how find that specific smart app. Tried searching Google to find the device handler, but still no luck.
It’s built right into SmartThings. Just tap the plus and it should be add able. Note if you’re not in the USA it may not be an option for you.
@@SimplySmart123 oh I see. I am in Jamaica therefore I don’t see any options.
I hate it when companies do that and don’t allow everything to be available in every country. What is up with that?
Will this work in the UK? I've been trying to connect mine since May 2020
That would be a question for SmartThings. I don’t think it works outside of the USA yet.
@@SimplySmart123 thank you for your swift response! *sigh* thats a shame.
I don’t know why they don’t just release everything to all of the countries and once it’s so stupid.
When I log into SmartThings I don’t get an option to see devices. I was able to pair to my lock with no problem … just can’t add or delete user codes. Any tips appreciated thanks
They are making a lot of changes currently so I will have to remake some videos once they finalize everything
Mine still works as shown in the video are you able to get to the lock manager?
Thanks for the reply ..all I can do is lock or unlock. The screen it shows gives that option and also shows battery life. I’m thinking about deleting the lock and doing it again..what do you think?
Ok I got it working. Called Schlage and they talked me through it.. thanks 👍
Awesome! Glad that you got it working in the manufacturer actually could help you in SmartThings.
Only works if you are the the US. That feature is completely disabled in Canada
Well that’s not good.
Is there any other option for us north of the border? Rboy app’s possibly?
@@crusher100 RBoy is definitely an option, but I think it's stupid that we have to do that and this important feature was not included in the new app for outside the US.
What’s the alternative for Canada and why is Canada excluded? I can’t find this rboy app you speak of
@@Jayl__ That previous response was 2 years old. As of about a year ago...maybe a little more, it's been re-enabled and accessible in Canada.
How can I check the app to see the actual code that has been assigned to each person?
Once you add the code you cannot see the code for security reason. You can delete and re add if you forget a code.
Is this app even available any longer?
Yes. It's still in the SmartThings app under the Life tab at the bottom.
My lock keeps on saying no lock is online. But I can control it from the app but can't make codes
Are you located in the US?
does the lock need to be connected to wifi?
Your lock will need to be connected to the hub in some way for this to work.
Is there a way you can see who, or wich code has opened the door??
Yes. You will get a notification when each code is used from your SmartThings App.
SimplySmart123 ✅ , I don’t? I have a Schlage lock wth a Samsung hub and I have tried soo many things and it wont notify me . And my lock wont work wth the Schlage app either 🥺 THANK YOU..
Does the code that you added via the Smart Lock guest access work on the lock? I would add a new one and see if the code works and you get a notification. Also be sure Smartthings notifications are on. There is no way to turn off the lock notifications currently unless all notifications are off.
SimplySmart123 ✅ , yes I added 3 more codes and the notifications are on.
Great. Probably delete the other one and redo it and you should be good.
any idea why i do not see that smartapp?

Didnt work in Canada
Unfortunately like Alexa not all functions are available everywhere.

The history will show every successful and unsuccessful attempt, by code (i.e. - either "justin" or "test2")?
In the history it tells you when each lock was locked and unlocked but it doesn’t tell you who unlocked or unlock the door. Many locks and unlocks are manual with your hand done from the inside so there’s no way I could know who did those locks or unlocks. But it does send a notification every time someone unlocks the door with a specific code.
Couldn't find the groovy IDE, so couldn't really get far with this video.😒
Unfortunately, they have killed it recently. You now cannot use any custom device handlers.
None of these instructions work nor do the screens you are showing correspond with the actual SmartThings app.
Everything has changed but the SmartApp is still in the SmartThings App.
@@SimplySmart123 Yes, so you should either take the video down or point to a new one. Leaving up one that is totally wrong is more than not helpful, it is a huge waste of time for users to discover that it is completely wrong at every step. It took me a couple of hours of fishing around to figure out what's what.
Why not take down this video since SmartThings IDE is no longer supported?
The lock manager is still built into SmartThings. With the changes there is no need to go into the IDE but everything else is very similar.
I can't find lock manager....😢
