      I may be mistaken but I believe I saw / read somewhere (video on Shane's channel maybe?) that Lockly should be rolling out Matter support to its Wifi locks including the one in this video. Curious if you may heard anything along those lines? And IF that ends up being the case, where would Lockly fall in your ranking / rating?

    Love the encode plus, we use it for the garage door and front door. The camelot bronze matches well with our brown front door and century brushed nickel fits the garage setting nicely. My favorite part is that it meshes well with everything from our ring security to Siri voice commands for homekit.

    Hi Reed, long time follower first time commenter Another aspect that I think was not touched on is the auto lock features. I love the auto locking of the door when I swing the door shut on our Aqara U100 with it’s door close detection. It’s not something I thought I needed but would miss it now if the feature was to be taken from me, it’s that convenient. Walking in with bags in hands and gently kicking the door shut and it locks for you is priceless. Automate everything!

    Thanks for this review, Reed. I've had both the Schlage Encode and the U-Tec Ultraloq. The Schlage has never failed me. Easy to use and set up. I really have no need for remote unlocking as I don't give access to my house without me or family being there. This time i wanted a lock with a fingerprint sensor and purchased the Ultraloq and the hub bcuz the lock couldn't connect to my wifi without it. The fingerprint sensor has failed me and my family many times and now its finally not working. We just use PINs now. Notifications also work sometimes but unreliable. Going back to Schlage and never looking at U-Tec again.

      this is a good point. I first fell in love w/ this feature with my August lock (although I hate many other things about it lol). However, with the locks that he reviewed that could be integrated with a hub, a simple automation could be created to accomplish the same thing. Even for locks without a built-in door close detection (all you would need is a door sensor on the door).

    Very good comparison. This gave me a lot to think about. One thing I feel would be critical is Battery life. I am using the August Wifi Smart Lock. When it is working Best decision I made. However Battery life is very short, I am replacing batteries every 30 days. Connection to the Wifi is super spotty even though I have a strong Wifi signal near the lock. The best feature of this lock is it knows my location, so the door unlocks when i get within 50 feet of it. So 2 questions, do any of these locks have a feature to lock/unlock based on your proximity (like the August)? If I am taking out my phone to unlock the door whats the difference between that and taking out my key? And do you know the battery life of each?

    I would be interested how much security these devices offer vs a similarly priced actually high security door lock with a key. I think the door locks main objective is security.

    • @Ultimaus
      @Ultimaus 8 місяців тому +4

      I think it provides just as much if not security as the next deadbolt. In some parts of the world doors or more serious. But in my neighborhood if you wanted to break in you could just smash the glass part of the door and unlock it from the inside.

    • @artieartya
      @artieartya 8 місяців тому +2

      Smart locks just meant to add convenience. Only as secure as any other dumb lock with a key.

    • @davidwalser462
      @davidwalser462 8 місяців тому +2

      In some respects, these locks provide more security. For example, most will notify you when the lock is opened (with or without using a key). Also, most will let you know whether the lock is 'locked' or 'unlocked.' That way, if you've already left the house and are 30 minutes on the road, you can lock the door if you neglected to do that before leaving. All these things add an additional layer of security over a traditional deadbolt.
      On the other hand, they are 'smart' and offer an additional way for someone to defeat the lock. With a traditional deadbolt, the lock has to be picked. That method applies to most of the locks reviewed in this video. In addition to picking the lock, someone could connect to your wifi (or your z-wave network, or...) and simply tell the lock to open. While that may be more difficult than picking a lock, it's something that cannot be done with a traditional deadbolt.
      HTH

  • @edwardgreenjr167
    @edwardgreenjr167 8 місяців тому +30

    I think in the future you should include if the key cylinder can be replaced or not. Most companies make one of a few standard sized cylinders, and some of these keys are MUCH more secure than the bog basic cylinder they come with. None of these extra features mean jack if a semi-experienced lockpicker can open them in just a matter of seconds.

    I have 3 of the Ultraloqs and your assessment matches my experience. The lock itself is great, but the fingerprint reader is not very good. Adding several copies of your thumb helps if you're very consistent with what part you press.
    One thing you weren't able to notice since you onlt have one device: Adding multiple users to multiple locks is a pain - each user needs to be added to each lock individually.
    All that said, I do like the lock, I just wish the fingerprint reader were better.

However, I would like a lock in our next home that I can link to automations. So when a particular code is used to unlock the door, it can trigger one HA automation, or if a different code is used, another automation will run. If I were running a B&B, I’d just go with a non-smart lock with a keypad. I actually focused on the appearance and when you spend up to $300 for a stylish lower lock set, you don’t want to ugly it up with a non matching deadbolt. With that, the best option is Schlage, which all can be matched perfectly with the lower lock set. I ended up going with the old Schlage Sense which are still being sold, sometimes on clearance. It’s been around for years now, works perfectly with Apple Home, has a key cylinder which is easy to rekey, and looks pretty good despite the bulkiness.

    I have gone through 3 different smart locks on my front door. They all worked great "UNTIL" the Arizona summer comes. With the door facing West and the temperature and direct sunlight warped all the electronic parts. I wish they would test them for long direct heat, since it is not going away soon. I have also gone through 3 doorbells as well.

      The non-touchpad keys were why I went with the ultraloq... my schlague failed after a couple of summers getting slammed by the sun.

      Another Arizona resident here: Which smart locks failed you in our hot summer sun? Our front door faces west, and the Logitech Circle View would overheat by 7:30am. When it did, not only did the camera shut down, so did the doorbell itself. I replaced the Logitech with the Aqara Video Doorbell G4. It, too, overheats, but the video AND the doorbell still work. I don't really like the looks of the Aqara, but it has been a solid performer for us.

      @@davidwalser462 First I used a Kwikset, then Schlage, and then Yale. What they all have in common is the "screen", no "push buttons". I think that the screen is the problem. Also in regards to a doorbell after using a Ring, Eufy and Amcrest the sun tweakd the case and the components as well. I went with a Dahua VTO PoE Doorbell. It is all metal and I recessed it in my front wall. It was eash for me to run a cat5 cable to it. Before i pushed it into the wall I put a lot of insulation around it. It gets warm but not supper hot.
      Reed aka @smartHomeSolver lives in my city, but if you watch the videos of his front door it is very well shaded most of the time. Hope that this helps.

      It makes me wonder if it’s only because android doesn’t have a “HomeKey” feature yet? HomeKey runs on NFC so it shouldn’t be too hard for android phones to use it too down the road.

    • @davidwalser462
      @davidwalser462 8 місяців тому

      @@shaggyfilms Yes and no. Could you get an Android phone to recognize the NFC signal and then instruct the lock to open? Sure, in theory, that's possible. The problem is you still wouldn't have all of the very nice features Apple had built into Apple Home key. For example, with Apple Home key, you can give visitors a virtual key that allows them NFC access to your home. Again, in theory, you could find a way to do that using Android, but it would take a lot of time and effort to create all the features Apple has already created.
      Will some third party create an Android app that allows Android phones to do all the things an iPhone or Apple Watch can do? Maybe. How many apps are there that allow you to watch Apple Secure Video on your Android phone? I suspect that's the number that will be released to allow Android users access to Apple Home key's features.

    Zwave module units all are "offline" user codes. The Zwave controller sends the info to the lock. That would be true for all the Zwave locks and only would matter how many users are allowed in the lock.

    I will say.. if using the single universal physical key is an important factor, all the Schlage smart locks can easily be re-keyed to an existing key as well. The tumblers can be removed just by the two screws inside the lock. Then take all the locks to local hardware or locksmith and they can re-key it for just a few bucks. Lowe’s does it for free even.
