  • Sadly, the patrons of the Whistle Stop Cafe initially came up short against the ladies of A League of Their Own in a Patreon poll we did between the two movies. But then, in true Towanda style, Tomatoes rallied and won our first-ever "Losers Poll" last month :)
This was a thoroughly enjoyable film that managed to eek out nearly every emotion from both Marc and me. Check out our reaciton and see how it lines up with your take on this remarkable modern classic.

Oh my good gravy, YES! I love this film so dang much ❤ I mean, this film has got it all. Murder, menopause, female empowerment, good ass bbq, the cast, the portrait of friendship and how family is not just blood. The book makes a bigger deal about how Ruth and Idgie were not just best friends. They loved each other, they fell in love. Alas, the 90’s was a transitional time and the director felt they needed to err on the side of caution. The film did win a GLAAD award, but it was only winning nominations amongst the mainstream Hollywood awards.
Honestly, this is up there with Steel Magnolias in terms of the roller coaster of emotions/dramedies ❤ love, love, love your reactions to this. Another good one, in this vein, is The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Bullock, Maggie Smith, James Gardner… and many more.

Thank you!!! And so well-said :) This movie DOES have it all, except maybe space travel. But I'm ok without that here at the Whistle Stop Cafe haha. That was our take on their relationship as well, and you're so right about the transitional time of the 90s. Especially with this being a movie that would be marketed (I'm assuming) largely to Southern audiences by default.
And I love all your expressions! haha "Oh my good gravy." What was the other one you said that one time, "Sweet fluffy Moses"? Something like that..

One of my all time favorite movies. God I had such a crush on MSM growing up 😍. If you read the book Ruth and Idgie were “best friends and roommates” 😂 They were in a relationship and the whole town knew but it was never explicitly stated. Also the movie does make you think Ninny was Idgie but in the book they really are two different characters. Like she said in the beginning, she married into the Threadgoode family by marrying one of Idgie’s brothers. She also talks about having a crush on Buddy.

    Laugh...cry....repeat.
Based on the novel by Fannie Flagg...a great Southern storyteller.
She also had a cameo playing one of the "women's group" leaders.
Fannie Flagg was a comedian, popular on the Match Game game show.
She suffered from dyslexia, diagnosed by a tv viewer who noticed her pattern of misspelling her answers on the show.
When a publisher approached her about writing a book, she initially turned down the offer....telling the man she couldn't be a writer because she couldn't spell!
He assured her they had people to fix her spelling and she went on to write several bestsellers.😊

This is one of my favourite movies and it’s from one of my favourite books. While the movie leaves a few things up for interpretation of the viewer, the book made it clear that Idgie and Ruth were in a romantic relationship together. It was fairly common knowledge to those around them but no one talked about it. It also made it clear that Mrs Threadgood wasn’t Idgie, but her sister-in-law (she married Idgie’s brother that teased her coming down the stairs at the beginning of the film). Idgie is actually featured at the end of the book working at a truck stop and still selling her honey.

Fannie Flagg wrote the book based on the Irondale Cafe, located in Irondale, a suburb city of Birmingham, Ala. The Cafe was run by her great aunt. She said it was based on stories her great aunt told her. So it's not clear how much is true and told to her and how much is fiction. But, the train is a major feature of Irondale. The Cafe is right next to the tracks. However, this was filmed in Georgia.
The Irondale Cafe really plays up the connection to the movie cafe, with movie paraphernalia all over. And you can buy a mix to fix their kind of fried green tomatoes.

The old lady telling the story wasn't Idgie. Her name was Ninny, I think she said in the beginning that she married a brother of Idgie's. She didn't put the honey there. The implication is that Idgie is still running around, doing her thing, and had recently paid respects to Ruth's grave. Also, not a lot of people recognize that Ruth's "come get me" letter quoted the book of Ruth - *the* lesbian book in the Bible.

Fannie Flagg (author of the novel that was adapted to this movie) wrote a sequel novel that explains that Ninnie is not Iggy. You should read it. And, yes, the town of Juliette, Georgia was left the set of this movie and it's a great destination for a day trip. thank you for a great review.

Ninny says she had a crush on Buddy at the beginning of the story, so it's clear that she isn't lying about being Idgie's sister-in-law, just like the book. It's easy to forget she says those things until you've watched it a million times like a lot of us have 😆

This movie's an old favorite of mine from when I was 19 and trying to figure things out, pouncing on any hint of representation. I wish it hadn't been so sanitized, but I understand why it was. The book is also fantastic and I HIGHLY recommend it. I haven't read it in a while, but I believe Fannie Flagg's fried green tomatoes recipe is in it, if you want movie-theme authenticity. 😊🍅

Keep in mind y'all, for authentic Southern cooking, you need to use lard. The second best is Crisco. If olives grew in The Deep South, the cooking would be different. Local folks always go for whatever is plentiful and cheep. Lard or bacon grease were added boiled vegetables, or with something like okra it was battered or breaded and fried.
Once I became more educated on nutrition, I seriously had to fight to get my mom to pull those things out of the pot for me before she added the heavy fats.

In the book, it’s clear Ninny and Idgie are two different people. In the film it’s purposely left ambiguous. Personally I think it makes for a better story if they are the same person.
It’s also heavily implied Idgie and Ruth have a lesbian relationship. In the novel it’s an open secret that the town is all right with. In the movie it’s never really stated, just implied, and it could easily appear as just a very strong friendship.
The cafe is based on a real place, the Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama. It was owned by the great-aunt of the author of the book. And to answer your statement, the film did inspire some Whistle Stop Cafe locations across the country.
The town used for filming was Juliette, Georgia, which had a population of 290 as of the 2020 census. There is a Whistle Stop Cafe location there, most likely inspired by the movie.

Good Lord, I’ve fried so many green tomatoes I can’t count them all. Sometimes when I didn’t go to work in the fields or hauling’ hay, I’d be at home frying some up with some gravy. Of course I had to make some powdered sugar tea to cool ‘em off. I’d rather do that. I was too little. So I had to go get my hardship drivers license at age 12 so I could drive ‘em around when it was too heavy to carry.
So momma gave up when I was about 17, realizing I wasn’t made to be working out where snakes would keep popping their heads out of bails of hay. I was better off and out of the way if I stayed home to cook and try to plan an escape. I didn’t get to go nowhere because everybody had a gun and itchy trigger fingers. What one has to do to survive, well… THAT secrets in the sauce too!

I saw this movie in the theater with my wife at it's opening. It was a big hit! Everyone loved it and understood what it all meant; Life events tell the story. Love transcends all things, gay or not gay. .....You'll hear about the controversy, Is Idgie really Ninny? Despite whatever line about Cleo, Idgie Threadgood is and forever will be Ninny. The old lady's telling the story of her life. Think about it.....She knows all these intimate details of Idgie's life with Ruth, all these things, yet there's no sign of any "Ninny" around in any flashbacks. The old lady tells too much and knows too much ....She is telling her own Story. That note on the grave at the end is freshly inked, and the wink/wink is there for a reason.

In the South, an insult followed by "bless their heart, makes it less severe & acceptable, somehow. I still call the refrigerator the "ice box". The lady running the first class Evelyn went to, before she wraps herself up in Saran Wrap, is Fannie Flagg, who wrote the book, "Fried Green Tomatoes". Mary Stuart Masterson's stunt double quit when she learned of the bee hive scene, so Mary did the scene herself. At the beginning of the movie Mrs. Threadgoode told Evelyn that she married Idgie's older brother, which means she is not Idgie. This is such a great movie with a superb cast! I give it a 5 out of 5 as well. Great reaction!! BTW- There is a recipe in the book.

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  6 місяців тому

I can only speak for myself, but where I’m coming from is that if you believe exactly what is spoken in the beginning by Ninny, then yes- it’s made very clear that she is indeed Idgie’s SIL and not Idgie herself.
However, I think the confusion comes from the implications made that this could be misdirection on the part of the film’s writer(s) to set up a plot twist in the end. We’ve seen this before in movies (I won’t say which bc of spoilers), but we think we’re being introduced to one character, and then it turns out they were someone else all along in the end. Even Evelyn in the final scenes says, “Idgie?” and Jessica Tandy just coyly laughs. I’m not saying this confirms or contradicts, but it’s just my opinion that this, coupled with the old bait-and-switch device screenwriters often employ, is why there’s questioning or confusion. Just my opinion. :)
