A piece of advice when it comes to Turkish coffee: after pouring it in the cup, wait a minute or two for the sludge to settle. If you use sugar, put it in the water to dissolve, when it's put in the brewed one, when we mix, the sludge comes back up again. Lots of love for both of you from Eastern Europe 💙

Yeah Turkish coffee is really great but there are some tricks. If you want it sweet, brew it sweet. When you pour, letting it settle is important, but I was also taught to tap the cup a few times to encourage it to settle, and ofc you don’t drink the dregs.

We decided to drive down to see the seasons change. It was a long trip, though. Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia.
It was so magical to me to come from the north, where it’s cold, to the south, where it’s warm, and see the tremendous differences from region to region in this incredible country of ours.
My wife and I used to go to Virginia every autumn to see the foliage turn. Virginia has amazing foliage, although I do think that the foliage in Ohio is underrated.
It’s just dazzling along I-75. Yes, just dazzling.
We would go down to Virginia, to get away for a while. You know, to see the wonderful farms, the countryside.
The hills, the mountains. Talk about “purple mountains majesty”.
    Just fantastic.
Red leaves, purple mountains, green fields.
And the roads, black, cutting through the green.
    All the colors...
    The trees...
    Pennsylvania’s nice, too.

Ok, first off you are AMAZING for typing all this out lol. It absolutely killed my soul not to be able to include more from this scene (and all the others, for that matter), lest the copyright gods strike down upon me. Hilarious part of the movie though, and as you of course noted, the pacing is crucial to get the full impact of the punchline, "Pennsylvania's nice too." LOL Thank you so much ♥️

Surprisingly little of this film is improvised. Elaine May is a genius writer, and her adaptation of _La Cage Aux Folles_ was masterful. The line "How Egyptian" was an improv, and of course the dance rehearsal was pure Robin. (It was the one time Mike Nichols let him off his leash, and it's reported that he had to cover his head or leave the room each time Robin did it because he simply couldn't make himself NOT laugh.) Hank Azaria got off a couple of fine improvs, and there's gestural stuff going on that clearly wasn't in the script, like Albert's recoil when Armand tries to take his arm. And there are a couple of accident improvs like the fall in the kitchen that resulted in great moments. But almost all of the movie is in the script. :)

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  Рік тому +5

Oh really?? That's even more impressive then, actually, because so much of it feels like just comedic geniuses going on instinct. Instead it's apparently immensely gifted actors playing their roles perfectly ;) THANK YOU so much, @Serai3!

I don't know who's right, but the story I've read is that both Robin and Nathan were ad-libbing so much that Mike Nichols had to beg them to do at least ONE take as written before they started free-wheeling. Supposedly Nathan could do improv as well as Robin, and they set each other off.

Watching Nathan Lane go from this to the film adaptation of the stage version of The Producers is just hilarious. The guy goes from drag queen to horny movie producer trying to blackmail little old ladies. "I want you to know that even though we're sitting down, we're giving you a standing ovation." Bravo to him for going all in with these characters. And Robin Williams (RIP) is one of the top American comedians of all time. A lot of comedians nix the stand up once they start making big Hollywood money because of all the work involved in creating an original 1 hour special. Robin never did. Apparently he had a brain tumour causing excruciating pain. Not the way I'd want to go out.

But the one that I like the best was not an improv per se, but rather a mistake that they tried to cover up. When Robin Williams falls in the kitchen, you can see the guy who plays his son is breaking character, but Hank Azaria held it together somehow! Robin even started to break character a bit, too. And of course, Robin Williams doing his "madonna, madonna" routine in rehearsals apparently took SO MANY takes because "mr. i chew gum to help me think" wouldnt stop breaking character every time lol

Nathan Lane may be the only person to outshine Robin Williams on film. (Of course that is subjective.)
Steve Martin was originally scheduled to play Armand, with Williams as Albert but Martin had scheduling issues. Williams was happy with the change because he figured he had done enough drag after Mrs Doubtfire.
Hank Azaria was inadvertently mimicking his grandmother.
Williams slip in the kitchen was not intentional.

Great cast! Wonderful film! I've seen a number of times as well. The dinner party is the best. Williams has to play it so close to the vest; while Lane just gets to cut loose. Which shows the real talent of Robin Williams. Not only to allow Lane to out shine him, but to put in the perfect straight man for Lane's craziness. Hank Azaria is a riot through this entire film, and is a joy to watch. Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest was perfect in their roles, and fit into this comedy brilliantly. This was Calista Flockhart's biggest movie roles; which really got her, her own show on Ally McBeal.

I remember when this came out. SUCH a fun film!!! I had seen the original La Cage aux Folles film on TV when I was in, like, middle school, I think? So I knew the twist at the beginning revealing that Val was their son rather than an affair, but I really enjoyed this remake SO much. It had an absolutely phenomenal cast and was just so incredibly funny. La Cage IS a stage production, as well, and the stage version gave us the iconic pride song "I Am What I Am". I haven't seen the stage version personally, but I've seen some performances on UA-cam of that song, and they're pretty much all great, though I think my favorite is by John Barrowman. Really enjoyed this reaction and needed that bit of fun after a very disappointing end to pride month (Supreme Court decisions, more of my home state of Florida's anti-LGBTQ+ laws going into effect, etc.). Fun Fact: most of the songs that the main actors sing were written by the late great Stephen Sondheim. He wrote one original song that was used for the scene with the bubble gum chewing dancer, the others (the beginning of Starina's number and the scene with Robin Williams and Christine Baranski dancing) were songs that got cut from Stephen Sondheim's musicals.

I still have fond memories of watching this movie as a kid. I had no idea what gay people were or drag queens. But Mom figured I'd like it because "It's Timon and The Genie". And she was right.

Even as a ten year old watching this on VHS when it came out I thought the son was such a prick.
