A little history lesson from someone who saw this in theaters... The breakout star of this movie was Mayim Bialik, who critics all singled out for her performance as young CC. Based on the strength of this movie, they quickly created the show Blossom to be a vehicle for Bialik.
Bette Midler is one classy broad. You need to see her in "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito, and "For the Boys" which is also a true roller coaster of emotions. Both you will love.

My big sister passed away unexpectedly in August of 2021. She loved this movie so much and loved Wind Beneath My Wings. I was in charge of picking the music for her service and this was the first song that I instantly knew had to be played. I had to turn the volume down for that part of your reaction because I just haven’t been able to listen to it yet. I’m glad you reacted to this one, though. Hard to believe you hadn’t seen it yet but I know that the premise of your channel. Lol. Another great video from you. ❤
A Stinger is a cocktail which was created in the 1890's, it's made by adding Creme de Menthe to Brandy (🎵You're a fine girl 🎶) (sorry, couldn't resist 😜) Young CeCe was Mayim Bialik who started in a couple of tv series in 87 and 88 and then in the Stephen King film Pumpkinhead in 88, later in 88 she appeared in Beaches. She appeared on tons of tv shows and in a few movies through the years, but what she's mostly remembered for is her tv series Blossom from 90 - 95, and as Amy in The Big Bang Theory from 2010- 2019. By 1993, while Blossom was still airing, at the age of 16, she had already won a deferred place at Harvard and had also been accepted at Yale, but in the end she decided to attend UCLA where she received her PhD in Neuroscience. She can also play piano, trumpet, bass guitar, and harp. FUN FACT: In 1991, at the age of 14, she shared her first screen kiss in a movie called Sex, Lies, and Teenagers with Johnny Galecki (Leonard from The Big Bang Theory). Full circle. Anyway, loved the review, love you and tell Beans hi 👋
Midler's performances were definitely the best things about this film. Please please watch her in the movie Big Business you will absolutely that movie.
She will love Big Business so much, not only is Bette great, she yodels, it’s so silly and totally 80s but also Lily Tomlin is just as awesome (but doesn’t yodel). Ashleigh will love the snake rattle thing (I’ve been doing it since childhood since the late 80s-early 90s)
@@SareyGamp Definitely the yodeling! I didn't make the connection myself until this comment thread, but that exchange in Beaches now takes on a different dynamic for me: Hillary: I can't even yodel! CeCe: What's yodeling got to do with it? (cut to Sadie Ratliff in BB milking a cow on stage while yodeling)
I’m so glad you watched this. Me and my best friend who was sick with cancer off an on from 25 to 40 was just like those two. I used to tell him all the time “I know everything there is to know about you and my memory is long. Very, very long.” He finally past peaceful after hard but fun and full life 12 months ago. This is very much a movie about how our friendship was.
My late wife and I were high-school sweethearts around the time this came out. It was her favorite movie, and favorite soundtrack. Over the next decade or so, she became ill, being diagnosed with Lupus in 1998. In 2003, she passed. To this day, I can't watch this or listen to any of these songs, especially The Glory of Love and Wind Beneath My Wings) without tears in my eyes. Back in the day, my fav song from the ST was Oh Industry!
'Wind Beneath My Wings' comes up on the 80s music channel fairly frequently. Bruce Willis sang 'Under the Boardwalk' and released it as a single, my sister had the vinyl record.
Fun fact: the blue shirt Bette wore with the shoulders out after the bad movie scene w/ the car. That was Cher’s shirt. She had a few of Cher’s clothes she would wear on stage.
YES! THIS IS THE REACTION WE WANTED AND WE KNEW EXACTLY WHY!!!!!! Been watching Ashleigh cry since _Steel Magnolias_ and not since _My Girl_ have we seen a genuine good fucking cry from the Hot Mess Express Queen Ashleigh!!!!! This has been a long time.... and Ashleigh, WE WANTED MASCARA-TEARS!!!!! Just a shame Hubben is not part of this reaction, because we know he'd be living at seeing you cry at this film, and let me tell you... the reaction did not disappoint!!!!! Yay for us winning for a non-poll'ed film! And we love seeing Ashleigh's hair dry throughout a video!!!
Mayim Bialik as a young Bette Midler is like an all time great younger version casting -the wind beneath my wings takes in a different tone and meaning with the movie. Great song by itself but incredible with the film Not sure why it didnt win oscar for best song
The first time I watched this, I cried for two hours after it was over. Great movie. #3 of my tissue box movies. #1 Steel Magnolias #2 Fried Green Tomatoes
I love your reactions. I agree that this movie seemed long in places. It's like it was trying to do too many things. Bette Midler was very hot in pop culture at this time, and Beaches put her over the top. She started out as a Cabaret performer, so there's a little autobiography in the script. You should check out her early concert footage. Just amazing. Haven't you seen Ruthless People yet?!? It's a twist on the classic caper and Bette's character makes the movie. It's a bit cartooney, but great 80's fun.
My mom used to put movies on like this when I was a kid as “background noise” for her, and meanwhile I watched this as a child and had my entire life views altered as a result 😅 no wonder I’m such a jaded adult!
John Heard has been in so many great films. One of my absolute faves is "The Trip to Bountiful". Geraldine Page starred in it as well. A beautiful film that I hope you react to one day.
Glad you liked it and yes it's definitely a tear jerker. My dad used to drop off my older brother and I at the movies and sometimes the one we were there to see would be sold out so we would have to watch another movie. Well, one time it ended up being Beaches. I was maybe 14 when I saw this and it was probably the last thing I would have chosen but as I watched it I slowly fell in love with Bette and Barbara. Truly a good friendship movie and much more.
An old girlfriend of mine would put this movie on once every year or so, and absolutely ball her eyes out. I asked her, "Why do you do it?" She replied, "Because I need a good cry."
Okay, late 80s, I'm in the Navy manning the departmental office from 4-8am and workday starts a 6a. On the ship's TV station, they're playing Beaches. During THAT ONE SCENE, tears are pouring from my eyes and EVERY OFFICER COMING ON DUTY AT 6AM WALKS INTO THE OFFICE I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING DAMMIT!
Ashleigh i just have to say, I've watched many on your reactions and I've loved them all. You have such a wonderful effervescent personality and you are hilarious. You have a heart of gold for people and you are an extraordinary young lady. You are a special person and you bring a lot of joy to the world through these reactions. I appreciate you, as i know so many others do. Be blessed sweet lady because you are a blessing to us all. Now, i don't know how much of a reader you are, but... The lady who wrote the novel upon upon which the movie was based ( Iris Rainer Dart) wrote a sequel ( Beaches 2 I'll Be There) and it tells the story of how CC and Hilary's daughter get along ( or don't). It is a great book and every bit as funny- and sad- as the first.
Young Cece was played by a very young Mayim Bialik, who is best known for Sheldon's girlfriend, Amy, on Big Bang Theory. I cry every time watching this movie. I didn't this time, I think, because of the skipping forward and muting of music. The music really draws you into the story. Great film!
Originally titled Pearl (after Janis Joplin's nickname, which was also the title of her last album), the film's screenplay was revised and fictionalized after her family declined to allow the producers the rights to her story.
One of my fave films, reminds me of my best friend. Because I’m a bit out there she isn’t, but she is very smart. I have a disability, I have epilepsy and she has always supported me. My great grandma I used to talk to about everything, when she died this song reminds me of her so much.
I don’t understand why every film needs to be fast paced for this generation. Ashleigh isn’t the only young reactor I’ve watched that thinks this way. I love when a movie takes the time to deepen a relationship/friendship or a underlying plot. And yes, I cried when they gave Hillary the diagnosis.
I've noticed this too. I find it annoying. When a director chooses to go at a slower place it allows the audience member to get into that world more and/or to think more. Maybe sometimes the screenplay could be tightened up a bit in some movies. But in any reaction when someone said the pace was slow at times I've never even noticed it when I watched the same movie. One of the greatest joys of watching movies is allowing yourself to "sink into" the story. When it might feel slow to you at a certain point you can take it as a sign to relax and wait. We all need to have time to just let our mind let go of what is the next thing to happen. Either in a movie or in life.
A bit off topic here but I, also, have cats who would shred me whenever they had to go into a carrier and then I found these three-sided, collapsible carriers that open on the side and all of my cats just go right into them, absolutely no problems. It's just a lot less scary for them. (I think the brand is SportPet.) -- Love to Beans!
i don't remember why or when the tradition started, but my dad's side of the family, whenever one of my cousins gets married we always stand in a huge circle and sing "Under the Boardwalk" during the wedding reception.
I remember watching on a Peter Pan bus coming home from Delaware in the '90s and that the end of this movie I was bawling my eyes out at the age of five or six.
Good one. I know you say Ruthless People doesn’t do well in your polls but I still think you’d like it. Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater.
I saw this in theater as a pre teen. Never watched it again but played the hell out of that soundtrack. The sister I shared a room with destroyed the tape she was so sick of it. And when I replaced it with a CD, she scratched it up lol. I didn't know I told years later. I can't blame her. It was on repeat constantly.
This movie is great. it features my favorite Bette Midler song, You are the Wind Beneath My Wings. I sang this song with my high school chorus. This is a great movie with a great song.
I was a kid when I saw this and all I remembered about it was that she died and the song Wind Beneath My Wings. I didn't even remember that there was a kid, lol.
When I first watched this movie, I was able to keep it together until the little girl asked if she could bring her cat, and then I completely lost it. It does bring back lots of memories however. Growing up, my parents would rent a house near the beach every year and my mom would play soundtrack every morning at the beach house and we would watch Beaches at least once during the week we were there (that and Lost Boys since we were in Santa Cruz).
My cousin Liz was born with a Bad Liver. Her whole life she was in and out of hospitals and most of her school life was done at home. She suffered Months with yellow Jaundice each year. Dispite all this she graduated high school and also Collage. Sadly Just after collage ( she had just bought her 1st brand new car.. They found a donor for a Liver. She went in ( everyone in family was VERY EXCITED ) Sadly She died on the operating table, This Happened when This movie came out. Her Funeral had over 4000 people there. Everyone from her Highschool and College All Kids and teachers came . They Played MANY Songs That LIZ Loved.. My Sister & I say Together holding Hands PRAYING They did NOT Play Wind Beneath My Wings..Well you had to know they would.. Everone sobbed. I Can't watch this Movie without Thinking Of Liz !
Another movie I love Bette in is "For the Boys" although not rated as one of her best its one of my favorites. Also "Ruthless people" is hilarious! Definitely worth a watch.
I still listen to Oh Industry regularly, it's such an amazing tune, and I had the joy of introducing my husband to Otto Von Titsling recently, but I can't listen to You Are My Sunshine at ALL, and I avoid Wind Beneath My Wings if I can. Just sobbing everywhere, and it's been like 30 years since I saw the movie.
You may find this strange, but this film made me invest in movies on Laserdisc. Odd trivia: My older sister was a classmate of Bette Midler from primary to high school. (She was known to perform/practice song and dance numbers between classes at Radford high school.) "Young C.C. Bloom" is played by Mayim Bialick, who "set the pace" of this wonderful movie.
Yeah, this one's gonna destroy you. I warned you to have lots of Kleenex ready. Young Bette was played by Mayim Bialik and this was her first big break. She would go on to star in the the sitcom Blossom and as Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. In between Blossom and Big Bang she went to college at UCLA and graduated with a degree in Neuroscience.
Beaches is one of those movies I watch every blue moon when I feel like I need an emotional roller coaster. It's odd because other cry fest movies I tend to watch more often so I understand your feelings on this one. One of my favorite Bette Midler movies is First Wives club. She is so funny in that one and it has a great cast in it.
It’s easy to dismiss the daughter as just rude. My mother my whole childhood was dying of the same disease (cardiomyopathy). She was always tired, sick, or in the hospital. She missed recitals, holidays birthdays and more and it was so easy to just be…..angry about it. I remember watching this movie with my mother. This and terms of endearment (which you NEEd to watch!)
I remember watching this on VHS when it was new. I was 5 years old, so 1989/1990. I've watched it at least 50 times in my life and still love it. The soundtrack is one of the best.
After watching this about five or six times, I bought the soundtrack. I used to go around the house belting out all the songs while doing housework. I really enjoyed the song,"Oh, Industry"... if that's the name.
omgoddess i think this is the first thing i have asked if you seen that ended up getting watched! im actually super excited for you to see it. this is still my aunt's favorite movie, and tons of little old ladies where i work watch this one a lot. i really hope you enjoy this one, and yeah, good idea on the make up less ness.
Beaches, Brians Song & Marley & Me are the only 3 movies I shed tears watching. Bette Midler's performance was as good as it gets in Beaches. The critics as usual got it wrong on this movie
This was another top favorite movie of my grandmas. I cry every time I watch it. Love Bette Midler Lol makes me chuckle when youtubers watch movies and see kids calling their mom by her first name. I call my mom by her first name. I'm 36 now and have been calling her by her first name since I was a teenager.
My best friend in college and I used to sob over this movie! He was bohemian CeCe and I was the stuck up Hillary lol. Guess Ashleigh didn't recognize the young CeCe as being Mayim Bialik from Blossom and Big Bang Theory in her first big role.
Why is it so cathartic to watch Ashleigh cry??? I request it every time she watches a tear-jerker, but I'm still waiting for Ashleigh to watch Terms of Endearment,

For more Bette Midler, I recommend First Wives Club! Also has Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn
This is a great movie with a great song.
the guy who played John was the father in the first 2 Home Alone movies.
I was a kid when I saw this and all I remembered about it was that she died and the song Wind Beneath My Wings. I didn't even remember that there was a kid, lol.
Still mine and my moms favorite movie to watch together ❤ cant wait to see your reaction!
There will never be a greater movie about bff’s 😭. Everytime
Her whole life she was in and
out of hospitals and most of her school life was done at home. She suffered
Months with yellow Jaundice each year. Dispite all this she graduated high
school and also Collage. Sadly Just after collage ( she had just bought her
1st brand new car.. They found a donor for a Liver. She went in ( everyone
in family was VERY EXCITED ) Sadly She died on the operating table, This
Happened when This movie came out. Her Funeral had over 4000 people there.
Everyone from her Highschool and College All Kids and teachers came .
They Played MANY Songs That LIZ Loved.. My Sister & I say Together holding
Hands PRAYING They did NOT Play Wind Beneath My Wings..Well you had to know
they would..
Yes, "Terms of Endearment" is a really good movie!
And after Alex Trebek died, she alternated hosting duties on Jeopardy with Ken Jennings
😭
I completely forgot Spaulding Grey was in Beaches. An amazing performance artist RIP. Depression is real.
I'm almost 50 yrs old & I've had the same BFF since I was 9yrs. I love this movie
26:48 and boom goes the dynamite ! LOL
Bette Midler sings her ass off with that song. It's one of my favorite songs from a film ever.
@7:55 that's John Heard the dad from "Home Alone".
I remember watching this on VHS when it was new. I was 5 years old, so 1989/1990. I've watched it at least 50 times in my life and still love it. The soundtrack is one of the best.
Checkout how Cece sings the 31:08 glory of love and how she sings the same song in the beginning
5 mins in and I’m anticipating lots of tears at the end of the video from Ashleigh.
After watching this about five or six times, I bought the soundtrack. I used to go around the house belting out all the songs while doing housework. I really enjoyed the song,"Oh, Industry"... if that's the name.
"It'll keep you honest." Means here is some cash so you ain't gotta turn tricks.
I'm kinda surprised Ashleigh didn't recognize Mayim Bialik as young CC. It was a breakout role for her, leading to the TV show "Blossom."
omgoddess i think this is the first thing i have asked if you seen that ended up getting watched! im actually super excited for you to see it. this is still my aunt's favorite movie, and tons of little old ladies where i work watch this one a lot. i really hope you enjoy this one, and yeah, good idea on the make up less ness.
Beaches, Brians Song & Marley & Me are the only 3 movies I shed tears watching. Bette Midler's performance was as good as it gets in Beaches. The critics as usual got it wrong on this movie
They used to call me Bette when I was in my 20's. Because they said I look just like Bette Midler. I always considered it a high compliment.
This was another top favorite movie of my grandmas. I cry every time I watch it. Love Bette Midler
Lol makes me chuckle when youtubers watch movies and see kids calling their mom by her first name. I call my mom by her first name. I'm 36 now and have been calling her by her first name since I was a teenager.
The point of this movie is that friendships have no boundaries. None.
"You are the wind beneath my 😫😫😫😫😭😭😭😭"...😅
Oh man, the moment I saw which movie you were watching, I knew you'd cry your eyes out.... just like the rest of us 😢.
It is a bit long, it's one of those movies that best watched with someone.
"Splash zone" Sweet baby jeebus!
Over-the-shoulder boulder holder! 🤣
My best friend in college and I used to sob over this movie! He was bohemian CeCe and I was the stuck up Hillary lol.
Guess Ashleigh didn't recognize the young CeCe as being Mayim Bialik from Blossom and Big Bang Theory in her first big role.
Alright, now you have to watch a film called "The Rose", with Bette Midler, it's very emotional and quite gritty.
19 minutes in - im already crying from the flamingo room show down reconciliation
I think if you make it through the whole movie without crying - do you even have a heart?
Why is it so cathartic to watch Ashleigh cry??? I request it every time she watches a tear-jerker, but I'm still waiting for Ashleigh to watch Terms of Endearment,
62 year old white guy living out on the farm in Kentucky and yes this movie makes me cry.
I never saw the show, but I remember the promotion. "Dohn a-ver doo thait a-gain!" 4:41
Two great Bette Midler films are Outrageous Fortune & Ruthless People
Bette Midler starred in Hocus Pocus 1-2, First Wives Club, Stella, Ruthless People, The Stepford Wives, The Rose, Oliver and Company. You have gotta see these movies
Stella is one of my other favorites ❤
Not the movie that had Child Me scream-singing "OTTO TITSLING HAD FOUND HIS QUEST!"😂😂😂
Such a good movie, and the soundtrack [chef's kiss]
"what's a gentleman between two friends?"............Lucky!
@19:40 that's actor Spalding Gray who appeared in "Straight Talk" with Dolly Parton. He's no longer with us sadly 😢
"On Golden Pond" is a GREAT watch.
