Marty Feldman was AWESOME. I had a chance to meet him on the set of "In God We Trust" (around 1980/81). He was one of those actors who actually APPRECIATED his fans, of which I was one. I'd just gotten a 35mm camera and wasn't used to it, so when I messed up the first attempt at a photo of him, he stopped (on his way to a scene) and POSED until I got a good shot.
MOST other actors I met wouldn't give you the time of day let alone have enough patience with you to figure out a new camera JUST TO GET A PHOTO!!

Feldman was great. It's not often Gene Wilder got upstaged, but Marty certainly did that in this film! Brilliant stuff.

Congrats on catching the cameo of Gene and giggling at his ad-libbed I was gonna make espresso line! I also love that Gene, Madeline, and the Reverend from Blazing Saddles (the older man at the beginning who was experimented on) are back together in this.

Ahhhhhh rookie mistake not catching the Reverend from BS!!!! You're right!! Wow! Dang it, I totally missed that. He's great. I don't know if I would have recognized Gene Hackman without the signature voice.

Liam Dunn. He did a lot of movies and TV in the '60s and early '70s. He was the mayor in the short-lived 1967 superhero spoof "Captain Nice," and just recently, I saw him as a safecracker in a rerun of the 1972 James Garner western comedy series "Nichols." He died in 1976, two years after this film.

  • @williamjones6031

    1. Mr. Hilltop/Liam Dunn is the same guy that plays the preacher in Blazing Saddles
    2. I first saw this at a drive-in (that's still here BTW) and there was a lunar eclipse over the screen that made it even cooler than it already was.😎
    3. The studio wanted this in color but Brooks and Wilder insisted black and white because they wanted the old school tone.
    4. This movie is Wilder's baby, and he agreed to do Blazing Saddles only if Brooks would direct and help write this movie.
    5. It was almost impossible to get through the "You take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban" scene. Everyone kept cracking up. You can see Wider trying not to laugh.
    6. Igor's hump changing sides was Feldman's running gag on the cast and it was kept in the movie.
    7. Marty Feldman's walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963.
    8. FUN FACT: Igor's "Walk this way" was Steven Tyler's inspiration for hit song of the same name.
    9. Wilder😇 also insisted that Brooks NOT be seen on film. However, the screeching cat and the wolf are Mel.
    10. Light reflecting off of the monster's missing teeth is not a goof. It's on purpose.
    11. Monical over an eye-patch.🤣
    12. "Puttin' on the Ritz" will never be the same again.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this comment!!! This is exactly the kind of trivia and background that we love. It really does add so much to the movie experience (and immediately makes me want to go back and rewatch, like I just did with the blond/turban scene haha). So true about Puttin' on the Ritz, btw. This will now be what I think of if/when I hear that song.

Mel Brook's best movie by a mile.
Marty Feldmen (I-gor) stole this movie .
4th wall broken over and over was pure genius.
Mel Brooks wasn't in this because Gene Wilder would only do this movie if Mel DIDN'T make a cameo.
    Mel agreed.

@@DavidvsFilm And, yes, Madeline Kahn had a beautiful singing voice - here's a sample: ua-cam.com/video/OLvqDBTfQqU/v-deo.html - from the "Carol Burnet Show", where she guest starred. Here she's alongside Harvey Korman (a regular on the show, and also Hedley Lamarr from "Blazing Saddles") and they are doing a parody of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, who also help popularize "Ah Sweet Myster of Life": ua-cam.com/video/OLvqDBTfQqU/v-deo.html

My understanding is that this was mostly a passion project of Gene Wilder's. Although he and Mel Brooks did work on it together, and Mel agreed to direct it, paying back the favor of Gene coming in last minute to fill in the role in Blazing Saddles. (MY favorite Mel movie too.)
But, I believe, Gene had the "condition" that Mel did not have any cameo in the film this time.
Since it was HIS "passion project", and he was kind of worried Mel would (intentionally or otherwise) "steal the spotlight" from Gene.
Don't know for certain if that is true or not, but that is what I've heard.

Don’t watch High Anxiety if you haven’t watched most of Hitchcock’s classics. Same with the Austin Powers movies. If you’ve never seen a classic Bond movie or Dr Strangelove you’re going to miss a lot.

This is another great classic that I always watch every spooky season.
For some more spookyness starring Gene Wilder for next year or really for some comedy I highly recommend the 1986 "Haunted Honeymoon". For some more Mel Brooks I highly recommend the 1995 "Dracula: Dead and Loving It".

I think where Marc is coming from is that Space Balls is nostalgic for us. It was the Mel movie that we grew up with, and I know that for me it was the first Mel Brooks movie I saw. The movie is funnier if you've bothered at all to have first seen the original 1931 Frankenstein from Universal, followed by the Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein. There are a couple more in the series but not really necessary to understand all of the jokes. Of course, back then almost everyone I knew had seen all the Frankenstein movies at some point or another whether on tv or on the big screen so I guess the movie was funnier to us being "in" on all the little jokes.

First, you are right, Marty Feldman is amazing in this.
I needed to rewatch this movie for Halloween (as I do every year) before watching this reaction so I’m late to the party lol. This is by far my favorite Mel brooks film. And I think it’s because I understand the filmmaking aspect of it the best as it’s references to the earlier material is fantastically done. There are references to things that I didn’t get at first but are amusing now - when Frankenstein is about to get off the train, he sees a boy. Frankenstein asks if it’s the Transylvania station and he replies “yeah yeah, track 29. Oh, can I give you a shine?”. This is referencing the Andrews sisters song Chattanooga choo choo- “Right on track 29, boy, you can give me a shine.” A few of those types of things went over my head the first time around but I appreciate it now. I enjoyed Blazing Saddles but I’ve barely seen any westerns so I think that doesn’t help. And I think this group of actors are superior to the ones in Spaceballs. I like the comedic timing better here.
Most of the fun-facts have already been talked about sadly, but I love gene hackman’s cameo. He found out about the movie from Wilder who was his tennis partner. He asked to be in it because he hadn’t tried comedy before. He offered to play the role for free. His ad-libb saying he was gonna make espresso made the camera crew laugh so hard that they had to fade the shot out. They could only use that take because Hackman couldn’t repeat that line without laughing with the crew. I know that since I’m late a bunch of people have already references different add-libbs, but I’ll try to add more. In addition to the espresso ad-libb, the “varm milk” and “ovaltine” offerings were add-libbed. Another one is Madeline Kahn saying “no tongues” and Gene Wilder’s decision to talk to the rest of the way without his tongue.
Mel Brooks didn’t make an on-camera appearance as was Wilder’s request but he did make off-camera ones including the cat that Frankenstein hits with a dart. The bloopers are great as well, and if this becomes a Halloween staple for you (not Marc apparently) then you should definitely watch them. Apparently this film was so much fun for the cast that when principal photography was almost complete, Brooks added more scenes for them to film to elongate the process. Also, Walk this Way by Aerosmith was inspired by the line that Marty Feldman says near the beginning. To me this movie is the second most quotable Halloween movie under Hocus Pocus, so you see how much I appreciate it lol. I do think you guys should see the original universal monster movies as this movie references a lot of them but I think they were just great movies regardless. Anyway, I’ve been typing for like half an hour so I’ll leave it at that for now. Thanks for the great reaction as always!

I think my favorite thing about this movie is how the entire cast is absolutely chewing the scenery the entire time. I'm convinced that this film would have fallen pretty flat otherwise. I adore the dedication to each individual bit. You just don't get that anymore.

I absolutely LOVE this film for Spooks and Booze. Kudos to Marc, because that cocktail looks amazing and now I need it my life.
This film was actually pitched to Mel Brooks BY Gene Wilder. The caveat being that Mel Brooks not be in it, as he had been in nearly every other film he's done. Also, Gene Wilder only wanted to work with one other member of the cast, the rest was up to Mel Brooks and the casting department. He desperately wanted the actor who player Igor, Britian's own Marty Feldman.
Not only was it filmed in black and white, but the props came from the original film Frankenstein from 1931.
Gene Hackman not only had this uncredited cameo, but he worked for free because he wanted to show that he was a versatile actor. Up to this point he had done nothing but serious roles.
Last, but not least, Madeline Khan and Teri Garr were supposed to play each others roles. They were switched just before filming and the rest is history.
Absolutely LOVED Spooks and Booze this year. Have a Happy Halloween!

"Young Frankenstein" has an amazing cast, Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Kenneth Mars as the Police Inspector, Gene Hackman as the Blind Man, and Peter Boyle as The Creature. Afterward people left complaining about how unfunny they were, including me. The movies were basically regarded as a sad fall of Mel Brooks humor after his earlier work, including this movie.

If you buy the DVD or the Blu-Ray set of "Young Frankenstein," there is an interview with Marty Feldman about the movie. Marty told the interviewer that he was wearing a pregnant pad for the hump on his back. This set also has an 8 to 9-minute hilarious blooper reel. When Mel Brooks was making "Blazing Saddles," Gene Wilder was the one to come up with the idea of doing a parody of the older Frankenstein movie franchise. Once Gene told Mel of his idea and showed his written treatment, Mel wanted to direct it after he finished with "Blazing Saddles." Gene Wilder has said in interviews that it was his favorite movie he ever did because he always laughing all the time with that fantastic cast. He felt he was in Shangri-la and did not want the making of the film to end.
Next, Mel Brooks was contacted by the set designer of the original Frankenstein movie from 1931, and he had the original laboratory equipment still in storage. Mel paid the man a rental fee to use that equipment for his film to make it look more authentic. Beyond that, Mel wanted to film the movie in black and white as an homage to the monster films of the 30s and 40s. When he proposed this to Columbia Pictures, they wanted to do something other than that. Thankfully, 20th Century Fox liked using black and white film stock instead of color since the color film would not make it look real enough from those older horror movies.
Finally, many years later, Mel Brooks decided to turn "Young Frankenstein" into a Broadway musical, and I saw it here in Seattle before the show went to Broadway. The audience knew all the lines from the movie, and I had a great time watching it.
