Sipsey is played by Cicely Tyson who is one of the most extraordinary actresses of our time. She passed away last year at age 95. If you get the opportunity to watch some of her other films, I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is one of her best!
She was also Constantine in the Help!
Cicely Tyson is one of the best actresses of all time.
Yes absolutely she is incredible gifted very talented actress. Cicely Tyson born December 19, 1924- January 28, 2021. She was 96.
She portray a lot of great characters. The roles she played in films reminds us about the women in our families.
Having grown up in the Southern US where this is a favorite dish, fried green tomatoes are really tasty when done right. Being green, they're hard and sour when fresh, but with frying they develop a very nice sweet, tangy flavor. And they're not as juicy as they are after they ripen, which keeps them from being too watery in the hot oil. The hard tomato, softened and sweetened by cooking, covered in a crunchy crust of flour, breadcrumbs, corn meal, eggs and milk, seasoned to taste, deep fried until golden brown. Good stuff!
I'm a Pennsylvanian and I love Fried Green Tomatoes
I’m a Hoosier (Indiana) and love fried green tomatoes. They are great when you fry them in bacon grease.
The secrets in the sauce!
If you enjoyed this, I think a reaction to “Steel Magnolias” would be a great idea.
and Beaches?
Yes..Beaches and Steel Magnolias are my other two favorites
That’s my 2nd favorite movie after this one.
Luv luv Steel Magnolias (The original movie from 1989).. lots of top actors & actresses too. A must see ❣️ Beaches too
To add to this list I would recommend Bagdad Cafe. Another favourite is Hidden Figures.
In a 2021 interview Mary Stuart Masterson talked about the honey bee scene:
"I was just supposed to walk over and get the honeycomb and bring it back to camera. We did what's called a series where you don't cut, you just keep rolling and you set back to 1 and you do it [again]. So, I did that three times and by the third time, I was so covered in bees I couldn't even see. It looked silly like you know the bearded lady with the bee beard."
The director yelled, "CUT" and the bee expert wafted Masterson with smoke and told her to walk away.
"I walked away really slowly and the bees weren't going anywhere and he kept putting more and more smoke and was like 'ok walk a little faster, okay RUN!' And then I jumped into a car, took my shirt off that had the queen bee pheromone on it. Drove away. Put on another shirt, came back and did it three more times." Masterson noted that this the last major scene she shot for the entire movie, "Not by accident. You know in case I died or something,"
This comment section is amazing. So many wonderful stories and comments about this film and not a single negative remark. This is quite a testament to Mary's fanbase and this movie. It was a joy all around. Thanks
If you liked Ninny, and since you like Morgan Freeman (who doesn't?), you should definitely watch Driving Miss Daisy (1989). It won several Academy Awards and is one of several 1989 films that made Morgan Freeman a household name that year.
Wonderful movie
This is CRAZY. 5 minutes ago I was just wondering why not many people react to this movie. Then suddenly I see one of my favorite reactors chose this movie. Looking forward to this
The exact same thing happened to me today. The phrase "Whistle stop cafe" popped into my head at work, then I came home and this was recommended.
I got to visit the place where this was filmed in Georgia and got to eat at the actual fried green tomatoes restaurant,it was amazing and the food was delicious😋 loved this movie since I was a kid.
I'm a Southern lesbian, and this is one of my favorite movies of all-time! The book is explicitly lesbian, but they couldn't get that past studio censorship, so their entire actual relationship is subtext. Fried green tomatoes (the food) are soooo good, especially with a remoulade sauce. I highly recommend them. They're a Southern staple!
There was so much more than that,it was about love.
There is a movie you ought to watch with the old lady in this, and Morgan Freeman as well. It's called driving miss Daisy. It's the film that really put morgan Freeman on the map. I dont want to spoil anything so I'll just say that you"ll like it.
I remember watching this with my mom when it was in theaters and it has become one of our all time favorites, we could watch it a million times together. I'd suggest "Steel Magnolias" if you want another Comedy/Drama/Heartbreaking movie like this one you could watch a million times too
The sad, horrible, cold-hearted truth is that Frank was legally within his rights to beat his wife at that time.
So glad you liked this movie. I've seen it a thousand times & cried right along with you ✌️💜
What’s even worse is that it WASN’T actually legal, but it was “socially acceptable”, so long as the “right people” turned a blind eye.
This movie is a right of passage for humanity; everyone needs to watch it once.
I keep saying that about "The Color Purple," but to date, I've seen no one watch it.
This was a Novel that I believe was a "banned" book that our teacher in Canada made us read when I was in public school, and the movie HOLDS UP! I LOVED this story, and your reaction was lovely as well
it Got banned because it says the friends were romanticly involved.
I remember seeing this in a packed theater in 1991, the entire audience was sobbing uncontrollably, it was quite a thing to witness
Nick Searcy's portrayal of Frank was so good, you couldn't wait to see him get it. I haven't seen this movie since it first came out. I forgot how good it was.
He's such a great actor. I wish he wasn't so often cast as a baddie.
Fried Green Tomatoes is a southern thing. Lol. My grandmother used to make them, and yes they are good when done properly and fried in a nice seasoned batter. 👍🏾
Yes, fried green tomatoes are a tradition in the Southeastern United States. I’m from Georgia and they were pretty common in rural communities when I was growing up in the 70s/80s. I hated them when I was a child but as an adult, I absolutely love them now if they are made right. I have live in Chicago for the past 25 years and they have spread outside the south to other parts of the country and are can be found as an appetizer/side dish in a lot of places.
This movie came out after I moved away from home and it always gives me nostalgic vibes even though it’s setting is a few decades before me. People still tell folk tales like this to this day.
Edit: Fun fact - tomatoes are slightly toxic when green but the heat from cooking breaks down the toxins so they are safe.
Edit 2: I should finish watching before I comment 😅 The town Idgie drove to, Valdosta, GA is next to my home town. We used to play football against them when I was in high school.
This is one of my favorite movies.... if it were not for my mom I would have not known about it . My mom died a few years after this movie was released and even now it still reminds me of her . Jessica Tandy ( Ninny ) and Kathy Bates were two of my mom's favorite actresses . This movie is so nostalgic for me.... it was set back way before my time but my grandma's knew those times . Your reactions and comments added so much more to this movie to relate and enjoy and I agree with everything you said . Thank you Mary for this wonderful treat .
This movie was one of the movies my mother and I shared like that as well. Would have never thought of watching it if it weren't for her. We'd sometimes go on "crying movie" binges and watch this, The Color Purple and The Joy Luck Club.
I always liked it when people showed up here at the local cinema for a surprise, not knowing what the movie is about, sometimes not even knowing which movie was on. It's a small, rural cinema and "Fried Green Tomatoes" has been one of our favourites from the start (another one you might find interesting would be Whale Rider).
A "girdle" is a modern corset, typically made of stretchy material, intended to smooth and slim the waist and hips.
Just so you know, fried green tomatoes are ridiculously easy to make.
Firm unripened tomatoes, egg, milk, cornmeal (or crackermeal or bread crumbs), salt, pepper, and cooking oil for frying (more than enough to cover the pan bottom, but not so much you're deep-frying; laying in oil but not floating in it).
So many cultural differences for a Belgian to navigate in this film.
There's the Deep South, which is as cloying a culture as is its humidity. There's the Depression, during which Idgie would ride food-filled boxcars so she could toss food out to the shanty-towns set up by the side of the tracks. There's the belief, still held by southern men that men were kings in their households and women were servants meant to obey them (it's biblical-based, and currently conservatives are trying to bring that back). And the KKK... This was the period when veterans of the US Civil War were dying off, so a lot of civic/social groups (made up entirely of white bigots) collected donations and set up statues to commemorate their Confederate 'heroes'. They weren't set up by political groups, but by Confederate veterans organizations and groups like the Daughters of the Confederacy.
Then there's the 'present day' in the film, of around the 1970s. Women's Lib is leading women to find their spines, discover their sexuality, even examine their external parts 'down there'. If you google things like the artist Judy Chicago, you see some of what I mean. Evelyn comes to find her power, not by going to these feminism meetings, but through Ninny's stories. Ninny seems like just a sweet old lady, but she is a warrior, bold as brass & determined to live life on her own terms. She becomes a role model for Evelyn.
Oh, and yeah. They cooked & served up Frank. "The secret's in the sauce..."
That black woman in the background (Sipsey) was Cecily Tyson, who was 67 when she acted in this movie. Among her awards are an Oscar, 3 Emmies, and a Tony.
The final thing secret (and probably some will argue this point) is that Idgey & Ruth were lovers. It was clear from the beginning, when Idgey as a child hated wearing dresses, that she was butch and gravitated to butch things. The child Ninny spoke of having was Buddy Jr; she never said she was pregnant or gave birth, just that she had a child. And she (as Idgey) refused to marry. The note on Ruth's grave was fresh, just placed that morning; weather had not gotten to it and wind had not blown it away. The wild honey was fresh, in a clean jar, unspattered by mud and clear of dust.
This movie ambushed you quite well. You reaction was genuine and a joy, so thank you for sharing it with everyone. Although a lot lighter than this movie, I think you'd find Bagdad Cafe to be another surprise and enjoyable share with your viewers.
Love Bagdad Cafe. A hidden gem.
Bees (most) respond to emotional states. Fear and anger make them aggressive. They don't mind chill people, generally. I had to talk to a cluster of bees gathering to build a hive. I told them that if they didn't move from their present location that the humans would kill them. I said my piece and I was becoming upset, thinking that they might not understand and they began to get agitated. I apologized to them and left that rooftop. They had been there for 4 days. The next day they were gone.
i've watched this movie a 1000 times, i love it... so glad you're reacting to it!
I’ve seen this movie many times, and I’m gutted mess by the end every time. LOVE THIS MOVIE!
I love this movie! Kathy Bates is wonderful in this. You should check out "Soapdish" with a fantastic cast of celebrities. It's a terrific comedy that pokes fun of television soap operas.
Fried green tomatoes and fried pickles are southern sides/ appetizers.. so good.
Mary: They're not eating Frank right? Right??
Me: Sure 😁😁😁
I love this movie! I've always meant to read the book, in which Ruth & Idgie's relationship is more explicit.
Ok story time, I was a child when they made this movie, the scene at the grocery store where she slams into the car was our home town grocery store. My Nan and I were there that day getting lunch, i remember them telling us to hold on then when to walk to our car to be extras. You should try fried green tomatoes, they are yum
If you loved this one, you would absolutely LOVE Steel Magnolias!
Now you need to watch "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Cocoon"...
They need to be green because they are much more firm and can hold up to the frying process💕
So they're not a special type of tomato but normal red ones that haven't gone red yet???
@@carlalussini correct!
Sitting here in Virginia , watching you watch the movie . I just became your 1000th like . Good job , great movie , one of my favorites .
I had the biggest crush on Mary Stuart Masterson. I first saw her was in the movie Some Kind of Wonderful. I don't think I ever got over her. lol
Jessica Tandy is also great alongside Morgan Freeman in the academy award winning Driving Miss Daisy.
Good movie. And yes fried green tomatoes are incredible. My favorite Southern delicacy.
Fried green tomatoes are just the best - 100% reccomend
Forgot to add - Hot sauce on the side is a must
Yes, fried green tomatoes are good. Southerners (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc) fry everything.
Right, and A commenter just mentioned they have a whistle stop cafe in Texas as well where they make FGT
And Don’t forget Virginia and Tennessee, Also Southern States
NOT laughing at ppl crying, but laughing at how every time a reactor watches this movie, the thumbnail is ALWAYS of someone crying. HAHA
I know others have mentioned it but it is worth repeating. You really should watch "Steel Magnolias." In addition to having a great story, the cast is AMAZING.
United States southerner here, who has been following you for a hot second.
A fried green tomato is similar enough to fried pickles to make a comparison. If that helps!
The Whistle Stop Cafe is a real restaurant here in Georgia too. They filmed parts of the movie there.
Fried green tomatoes is a great movies. It’s also a delicious treat. So are fried red tomatoes. So is pretty much anything fried.
We have a Whistle Stop Cafe in our little town in Texas. And yes they make Fried Green Tomatoes. It's been about a long time and it's next to a railroad, so I'm not sure what was there first the movie or the restaurant. Also, I'm not sure what you said after Ruth died but the closed captioning said "oh my God, my haircut". Lol.
The saddest part of this for me anyways is the notion that there was this simple place years ago where people lived as a community but time and circumstances all but erased it and it can never come back.
That arm tombstone is still there outside the whistle-stop cafe.
I have never made it through the scene where Ruth dies without bawling! Such a good movie! I just adore Idgie! I'm going echo another comment I saw and recommend you watch The Color Purple!
The 'Whistle Stop Cafe' in the movie is a real place, in Juliette, Georgia. And friend green tomatoes are delicious! You should watch 'Steel Magnolias', Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood'; and 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'...
Shadowlands with Hopkins. You'll love it!
Fried green tomatoes are a southern delight. The movie rocks! Kathy Bates is iconic. Mary Masterson is a treasure. Her and Johnny Depp do a wonderful job in Benny and June you should check it out. Jessica Tandy Rocks
#Joon
I grew up on fried green tomatoes growing in the (American) South. Sooo good.
I love your level of empathy. Your reaction when she got kicked down the stairs was spot-on. I know what it's like to be kicked on a flight of stairs. Let's just say when you get up there's no going back unless of course you want to break your neck the next time.
I’m from the American south. Fried green tomatoes are good, at least here they are.
Also this movie never gets any less wholesome or gut wrenching.
Tis is one of my favourite movies. The only thing I don´t like about it is they left Ruth and Idgie's relationship up to the audience's interpretation when in the book it was explicitly said they were togethere and they raised Buddy Jr as their son together. I don't remember if he also called Idgie mom or not but he was definetly closer to her that he was to Ruth and I think she died when he was way older in the novel. I read the novel a few years ago so I don't remember everything. I think the end with Evelyn adn Ninny is different too but not quite sure.
Still... I adore this movie, I've rewatched it many many times trough the years and I wished more people would react to it.
In the book Idgie calls Buddy her son but Buddy always calls her Aunt Idgie. But it’s also clear that they were very close.
The bee scene is literally my worst nightmare.
Also: NOT THE BEES 😂
Mary Stuart Masterson actually did the bee stunt herself. Her stunt double freaked out at the last minute, so she got some quick tips from the bee handler and decided to do it herself.
You use green tomatoes for frying because ripe red tomatoes are too soft and would fall apart. If you ever get a green one, slice it up, just beat an egg, dip the slices in the raw egg, then cover them in flour or cornmeal, and fry them in oil until brown. Then just put some spices you like on them and eat. Pretty simple. They're pretty good.
Yes, fried green tomatoes are very good. I haven't had them in years though because I don't like to cook, well fry anyway. My mom and grandma used to make them all the time while I was growing up.
I'm in the background at the party before he gets run over by a train
Thank you thank you
... BTW YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO TRY FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. IT'S SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.
Signed, a southerner
Congrats on 40K UA-cam subscribers, Mary! :)
Hi, Mary. Happy late birthday. This is such a fun movie. I’m from the south so it’s all very familiar. Let’s go!
Yes, Ma am!!!!! one of my all time favorite movies!! i just loved watching you react to it!!! you never let me down!!! see you at the next movie!!!!!
Hey Marijke, if you wantt o see some more instense depictions of African American life.
Check out Missippi Burning, 12 Years a slave, Green Book, Selma, Malcom X, Glory, Steven Biko, Amistad, 42, ALi, Something the Lord Made, men of Honor, Remember the Titans, Boyz in Da Hood, The Color Purple.
Southern fried anything is a learned skill but the watery tomato seems like it would be extra difficult to fry correctly. Great film and reaction from Mary.
Green, unripe, tomatoes are not as "watery" as ripe tomatoes. I'm from Georgia and grew up on fried everything. Fried green tomatoes are great.
That's why you fry them when they're green! :) They aren't watery that way. They're fairly easy to cook if you can get your hands on them or grow tomatoes yourself. My family grows tomatoes specifically for fried green tomatoes since grocery stores here don't stock them when they're green.
Terms Of Endearment is another film that has all the feels.
Ninny was played by Jessica Tandy who along with her husband Hume Croynn is one of the most famous acting couples of all time. Their stage and screen credits are enormous. In every one of your videos, I can feel what you are feeling. Nice to see you back. I recall rubbing the belly of a pissing little boy in the guild square in Brussels.
Completely stoked u finally watched this film. Definitely one of my favorites. Your laugh is like chicken noodle soup. Much love from Tennessee.
Now you should see Driving Miss Daisy.
I recommend Mississippi Burning and To Kill a Mockingbird to get a feel for the old South civil rights movies. There's a whole genre of them to go from there if you're more interested.
To Kill a Mockingbird is based on a book and probably every child in America reads it at some point or another in school.
You should check out more films with Cathy Bates and Jessica Tandy.
Another amazing flick, of longing for that life you never had, that marriage you want to be better. Sisterhood with Idgie and Ruth, as well as Ninny and Evelyn, all the while Sipsey is in the background giving everyone that love and protection they richly deserve. Glad you reacted to it. Also, check out "Steel MAgnoilas" and "Terms of Endearment". The last one is one of my all-time favs very similar in tone to this movie and still have their own greatly unique stories.
Sisterhood between Ninny and Evelyn, but Idgie and Ruth were a couple.
@@judithcure2255 thanks for mentioning this, it's overlooked by so many
Fried green tomatoes are DELICIOUS and I love this movie. ❤️❤️❤️
There is no way to watch this without crying your eyes out. Idgie and Ruth forever :)
I live about 50 miles south of where this flick was filmed.
If you like Kathy Bates in this you will love her in Dolores Claiborne
1991-1992 had an unusually high number of movies with young boys and/or teen boys dying in them. It has always struck me as an odd coincidence.
Fried green tomatoes are delicious. Green tomatoes are a lot bit tart compared to a ripe one. They are a staple of the cuisine of the American south. I definitely recommend that you try them. Here is a link to a great recipe. ua-cam.com/video/xPR0xFgCAZY/v-deo.html
I saw a couple recommendations for Driving Miss Daisy - yes, yes, yes! One of my favorites, and never seen a reaction to it! If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes, you'll like this one too.
Kathy Bates should have won an award's for her performance in this movie, she did a great job
Secret Sauce is the best sauce! Another hidden gem of a movie..........The Man Without a Face - 1993 {Mel Gibson}.
17:53 I dont think it's just Belgium!
Thanks for letting me watch F.G.T. With you. It’s a really good movie but it’s also a sad movie and a hard one to watch . Everyone did such a great job in that movie.. Fantastic movie and thanks for sharing it. Take care and I’ll see you at the next movie. 😊
Most people who make fried green tomatoes (at least around me growing up) did so with tomatoes from their own gardens because you can’t really find unripe tomatoes in stores. But you should definitely try them if you get the chance!
They're good with hollandaise sauce. You just fry underripe tomatoes in breading.
Rip to a beautiful gorgeous actress Jessica Tandy we still miss you
I do love fried green tomatoes. They are much the same, except sour where red tomatoes are sweet. My dad had an impressive vegetable garden, and once he got the tomatoes to grow, he couldn't ever get them to stop. They were very productive, year after year.
If they are made right, fried green tomatoes are awesome. Paired with some dill ranch dressing.
Love your reactions, Mary! If you liked Kathy Bates in this one, I recommend Dolores Claiborne.
I just got done watching. I knew it would suck you in. While not per say a favorite movie of mine, one of my sister's is a huge fan of it. She even planned a trip one weekend where her and our other sister ( her Twin) went to the WS Cafe just so she could try the FGTs lol. We live in Savannah GA., so it's almost a 3 hour drive north west of here. I had to giggle that you were liking the Southern accents. Some actors can do them well and others, not so much. If you ever visit the South, don't do it during the Summer lol. See y'all later Mary.😀
I love fried green tomatoes, they taste so good!! I make them at least once a week.
"Okay, I've lost it." Hahaha😊
The Book, has recipes. From the Whistle Stop Cafe
Fried green tomatoes are wonderful! I live in Texas and you can get them here, but the best ones will be in the Deep South, like Alabama and Mississippi. Being green and not yet ripe, they are firmer and less juicy than a normal tomato, and hold up to being sliced, battered, and fried.
You are also right about the whole tiptoeing around the menopause conversation that's a very southern thing. We do not talk about those things. We don't talk about our private parts we don't talk about what happens with them one day your mom hands you a tampon and says this is the rest of your life and then you wake up in a hot flash and you wonder what the hell is happening to your body. The only way that you get any information about menopause down here is if you go to the doctor and it's still a shameful conversation to this day
Been a fan for a while now - this reaction is my favorite so far! Thank you! Thank you!
Çok iyi bir film çoğu kişi izlememiştir.Tüm zamanların en iyilerinden biri olabilir.Kathy Bates ise damgasını vurmuş dehşet bir karakter oyuncusudur.
you can still use red tomatoes but the green are the best for this dish. Try it its yummy
Since you liked this I think that you would like: The Help
