The following is from an article about the movie Steel Magnolias that I read a few years ago. SHIRLEY MACLAINE "It was really hot. There was Dolly with a waist cincher no more than sixteen inches around and heels about two feet high and a wig that must have weighed twenty-three pounds. And she’s the only one who didn’t sweat. She never complained about anything. Never. The rest of us were always complaining." ROBERT HARLING "We were shooting part of the Christmas scene, and this was in the dead of August, and we were sitting out on the porch of Truvy’s beauty shop. We were waiting, and there was a lot of stop and start. The women were dressed for Christmas, and Dolly was sitting on the swing. She had on that white cashmere sweater with the marabou around the neck, and she was just swinging, cool as a cucumber. Julia said, “Dolly, we’re dying and you never say a word. Why don’t you let loose?” Dolly very serenely smiled and said, “When I was young and had nothing, I wanted to be rich and famous, and now I am. So I’m not going to complain about anything.”
God I love that woman. A true beauty inside and out, and always has been wise beyond her years. And of course I just love me a true Southern woman! My dad got to sit on her lap at a meet and greet in NC in the early 70s when he was a little kid, and he still blushes when he talks about it lol
" I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life, and I was there when she drifted back out. It was the most precious moment " breaks me everytime, guys.
On April 1st, 1976, my incredible momma gave "birth" to me. She was in labor for 18 hours....and, only after she died did I learn the truth. I was always told that that we both almost died. I learned that my mom and I both flat lined .....they made my dad leave the operating room. Somehow......they saved both of us. And fast forward many many years. January 9th, 2021. My mom was doing in home hospic for lung cancer. In my living room, she passed away at 12:20 a.m. while I was holding her hand.
@@DavidvsFilm 😂 I don't just say that because her hair is so pretty long and curly. I say it because it is a hideous cut that goes against her hair texture and head shape. It wasn't stylish or cute. It looked like a bad wig worn backwards. After a trip in the dishwasher as you say.
Whereas I have seen Steel Magnolias more times than probably the actual cast has, I have only seen Fried Green Tomatoes once. I am not sure if Marc has (this is David typing- hi!), but I'll ask. I would love to watch that one :)
The nurses in the movie who turned off Shelby’s machines were the real “Shelby’s” nurses who took her off life support. Also, her mother wanted to be there during that scene and when they tried to talk her out of it, thinking it would be too hard for her, she said she wanted to see Julia get up out bed when it was over, something her daughter wasn’t able to do.
Awww really?? That’s so nice about the nurses. I don’t know how nurses do it- everyone I’ve lost who was in the hospital beforehand received such genuine love and care. I’ve seen more than one nurse tear up at the end. And so sweet about the mom ❤️
As a (Type 1) diabetic, I can tell you that Shelby's hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) was 100% real. Low blood sugars can hit incredibly fast. Simple sugars like juice or full-calorie sodas are the best at-home treatments. We always keep full-calorie soda in the house. A few years back, my sugar was 26 (normal for a diabetic is 70-130/150). Incoherent, sweating, telling my mother and husband to GET OUT while my husband was trying to get me to eat PB (I didn't). Firefighters were called and they gave me what amounts to a sugar bomb. Sugar bombs are used by medical professionals to get a diabetic's sugars up in a hurry. That didn't work, so a paramedic asked my mom if she had a full-calorie soda. Mom got one, she helped me drink it, and while the FD and paramedics were there, I started to feel better. I remember my sugar, before they left was 56 and rising. Now 56 is still low, but coming from 26 was a huge improvement. If the low is not treated in a timely manner, it can lead to an ER trip (at least). Diabetes is a sucky disease. It messes with everything. Circulation (neuropathy is common), heart, eyes, teeth with amputation, DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis) and coma being extreme complications, but with a good diet and exercise plan, diabetes can be very well controlled. Heck, my a1c went from 7.2 in December to 6.8 last month.
Thank you so much for sharing, Liz! I can’t even imagine how horrifying that must have been. My great-grandmother was blind from diabetes complications, but I only have vague memories of her. This movie was the first depiction I’d ever seen of diabetes side effects.
@@DavidvsFilm My maternal grandmother was Type 1 and by the time she was diagnosed, she was legally blind. The doctor said that she probably had diabetes for decades. She hadn't been to the doctor in 40 years. If you, or anyone else, start being thirsty for no reason, peeing all the time (from the thirst) and losing weight for no reason (from the peeing), get to the ER ASAP. My husband experienced all three and I tested his sugar after a week, because he didn't tell me until then. His sugar was 561. He's a Type 2 diabetic. We joke now that I kissed him and gave him the 'beetus. 🤣
Yes! I’m type 2 brittle diabetic and have had a few period were my sugar drops anywhere from 19-67…which is highly unusual for a type 2. I’ve even spent up to a week in ICU because it would not stay up. It is a very complicated disease that many do not take serious enough.
@@christinapurdion84 I spent a month in the hospital (a week in iCU; not my longest ICU stay, tho) because of DKA in 2021. I wasn't taking care of myself like I should, but I went from an a1c of 11.4 in April 2021 to 6.8 last month. I *hate* this disease. I can't feel my toes. Neuropathy. Sliced the bottom of a toe open last Thursday and didn't know it until my husband saw blood on the carpet. My kidneys are damaged, and now my eyesight is messing with me. Diabetes and Fibromyalgia (which I also have) are two things I would never wish on anyone.
When my daughter passed away, my friend called me and said she will be my "Ouiser" if I felt the need to hit anyone. That one comment made me realize that I had women in my corner! This is the best movie to show the power of friends and laughter to get through the ups and downs of life.
"I'm fine! I can jog all the way to Texas and back, but my daughter can't! She never could!" is what gets me. I can't believe Sally Field wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for that performance. One of the best of all time.
I totally agree that Daryl Hannah did an amazing job. When you think of her in the 80’s you think of her being the dazzling eye candy in Splash, Roxanne, Wall Street & Legal Eagles. But in this, she completely disappears into the role & plays a painfully awkward & shy character far removed from her previous glamorous roles. Glad you picked up on her performance too as it’s somewhat overlooked.
Yeah, you ain't lying about the fierce humidity in Louisiana. I drove out there from Georgia to visit my best friend from high school who was at Fort Polk. 1991 this was and said friend was in the Army. I will never forget the sensation of stepping outside, freshly showered and groomed, to instantly breaking out a sweat. Agree totally that Darly Hannah nailed her role perfectly.
Lived in Louisiana most of my life. The scene where M'Lynn drives down highway 1 headed to Aunt Fern's to pick up Jack tears me apart every time I see it. I have driven that way dozens of times in my life, and these characters could all be members of my own family. I attended Northwestern 3 semesters and crossed those Cane River levees many times. It makes me so proud that this story was born out of our state.
Hey Michael! Yeah I was at Centenary in Shreveport, but I lived in Natchitoches and went to Northwestern for one semester. Same with the bridge! :) Is Mariner’s still there? That was my go-to for fancy restaurants lol.
@@DavidvsFilm Not sure haven't been there since college. Living in Slidell near New Orleans since 1979. I graduated from Mansfield and went to Northwestern and Louisiana College. Did a lot of partying in S'port in H.S. The good ole days.
@@DavidvsFilm I'm originally from Sabine Parish, around the Toledo Bend Lake area; but lived in Shreveport for a number of years. Graduated from LSU-Shreveport and from Northwestern in Natchitoches. Worked for a short while as a nurse at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center. Mariner's is still open and going strong in Natchitoches. In 2020, it almost closed permanently due to the pandemic; but, thankfully the owners were able to turn operations over to another family who expressed interest in running the restaurant. Granted, they added their own touches; but, basically kept the same delicious, southern cuisine that keeps patrons coming back. The transition of ownership was fairly smooth and things ran great for a while; until a devastating fire gutted the restaurant. Being resilient, the owners stepped up, renovated the restaurant, and got it back operational again. So, if you're ever in the area, stop by...the food is still great and the cocktails are still refreshing inside the Cove.
I love that you mentioned loving the shot of M'Lynn coming down the hallway. Anytime I’m on a hard floor in shoes that click, I have a picture of her with her purse power walking down that hall!
Yes!! Same haha. And then I can’t remember if I mentioned it in the reaction, but to this day a friend of mine and I still paraphrase the kidney surgeon when something is going well- “Looks good. Looks real, real good.”
When this movie came out my grandpa was dying of end stage renal disease. He had type 1 diabetes and he was also an alcoholic (WWII vet). He died of heart failure days into 1990. This movie is a hard watch for me because I associate it with my grandpa. He had his problems but he was a great man and I still miss him.
In real life, Shelby's [Susan's] husband actually remarried six months after her passing. 🤨😒 'Susan died in the fall of 1985. Pat, my ex-brother-in-law, he remarried five or six months after her death and the first time I heard my nephew call this other woman ‘mama’ was when I said ‘No - Susan can’t disappear' Robert Harling
It's a cup of flour, a cup of sugar, and a cup of milk. You drain the juice of the fruit cocktail and add it to the previous three. Mix really well, then set aside. You take a stick of butter and melt it in a square baking dish. Add the fruit cocktail, I like peaches instead, and then pour the flour sugar milk mixture over the top of the fruit. Put in a 350 oven till brown and bubbly, about an hour and fifteen minutes. It will taste much better. 😊
When my husband and I got married, I INSISTED that when our justice of the peace asked "Who gives this woman away?" that my dad responded "Her mother and I do!" all because I saw this movie as a kid and decided thats what I wanted when I grew up😂
When my brother got married he asked our father to be his best man. At the end of the wedding the minister said that my brother could kiss his bride he did just that for a bit longer than technically necessary in Dad's opinion. My poor father, who was almost completely deaf in one ear and had a profound loss in hearing in the other, thought he whispered, "That's enough, Son." Instead he said it so loud everyone in the church heard him! Well, everybody but my brother who didn't hear him at all! I think about that every time I see the wedding scene.
Fun facts: The doctors and nurses who treat Shelby in the hospital are the same ones who worked on the writer's sister in real life, and his mother insisted being on set when they shot the scene shutting the machines off, because Julia Roberts would still get up out of the bed when it was all over. When M'Lynn rushes to Aunt Fern's just after, the baby who runs at her is Sally's 3rd and youngest son Sam, who was about 18 months old when the film was made, and the director knew he'd run to her naturally. Sam is gay and posted a tweet several years ago about people asking him if he thought being gay was due to nature or nurture, and he answered "nature," then followed up with a picture of his mother hold him at the wrap party with the other leading actresses, adding "and this, definitely this."
No need to apologize for getting emotional, Marc. When I saw this, I cried my eyes out. It's one of those films that just guts you. But... laughter through tears. 😉 That scene at the cemetery is gold. "HIT HER! KNOCK HER LIGHTS OUT!" made me cry laughing. So... full range of emotions with this film, for sure. 😊 Another thing's for sure - Sally Field acted the HELL out of that scene. I lose it every time she starts crying and wanting to know why this happened to her daughter. GUTTED.
This movie means too much to me. As a kid I had this memorized. My family quoted it constantly. In high school, I performed scenes from it. And would you believe it, as an adult, I developed diabetes, unexpectedly had a kid, lost the functioning of my kidneys, and am currently on dialysis. Trying to live a normal life and raise a kid is hard but man this movie reminds you why we live life to the fullest. Can't help but love it. Btw bless y'alls heart for using toilet paper!!!!
I grew up in Shreveport too! This came out when I was in high school and me and my bff were front and center at the theater when this premiered, sobbing our eyes out! 😂
@@DavidvsFilm oh gosh! I never knew it was like that either! My pop had it and it made him blind, but I thought it was from him drinking his white lightening! My pop was a Tennessee farm boy! 😂
I remember smoking in hospitals. I had open heart surgery several times as a child in the 70s and 80s. Lots of time in the hospital and smokers in the family. I remember seeing nurses smoke in the halls. Then it was confined to waiting rooms. Then it was one specific room on each floor. Then one waiting room on the main floor. Then an outdoor smoking area. Then the smoking area was removed and people smoked in the parking lot. Then no smoking on hospital grounds.
Ok before we even get to your comment, I have to compliment you to the max for your choice in profile pic- Flo!! “Kiss my grits!” When I was little I remember watching Alice reruns, and that was my trigger line that would launch me into laughing fits. Loved her!! Anyway, also back to childhood.. when I was really young I remember smoking indoors pretty much everywhere. But not in hospitals. And that’s weird because Steel Magnolias was filmed around that time about an hour from where I live. Maybe I just didn’t notice, but I really don’t remember.
"If you got nothing nice to say then come sit by me" is usually a line credited to Alice Roosevelt daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. When President Roosevelt was asked to get his daughter under control this was a girl who once jumped clothed into a pool on a congressional trip Roosevelt said "I can run the country or run Alice I can't do both." Also, when Bobby Kennedy mentioned her many years later that the dip in the pool she took once on a congressional trip must have been scandalous she said "No, If I had jump in naked that would have been scandalous". This is the same woman who got pissed at her husband campaigned against him and when he lost by a little over 100 votes she said "The Roosevelt name was worth a hundred votes I cost that election remember that.".
I love watching people react to this movie. It's seriously one of the most underrated films. When it came out, the awards shows basically ignored it. Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar but lost... no one else even got a nomination, nor was it nominated for Best Picture. Sally Field should have been recognized for sure, but really the whole cast was amazing. Also I think one of the most underrated characters here is Spud - Truvy's husband. He doesn't say much and they don't spend a lot of time on their marriage... but it's obvious how detached he is and how underappreciated and unrecognized she feels. The scene when they are getting ready to go to the funeral and he says he might want to go with her "if that's okay." That is a scene that always gets me.... it's the moment he realizes how neglectful he can be. It took a big loss for him to reevaluate some things in his own life... and we see that things are different for them after that.
I had always assumed Sally had gotten a nomination for her role in this. That is a straight up crime that she wasn't, you just blew my mind. The funeral scene alone is worthy of her getting a nomination at the very LEAST. The raw emotion and the gambit of emotions she goes through in that scene is so real and relatable. She endeared me to her for life because of her performance in this film. And you're right, Spuds arc in this film is seldom talked about, but it's so important, and is very heartwarming when he is able to finally wake up after Shelby's passing, and realize he hasn't been treating himself or Truvy the way he should be. Sam Shepard was such a wonderful actor, he had such a charisma about him, and was a fantastic playwright too.
I was in my mid-teens when this came out and I'll never forget the added experience of seeing it in a packed movie theater. Outstanding. Enjoyed your reaction and commentary. 😊
I've seen this movie countless times, but dammit, MARK had me crying for the first time in forever. 🥲🥲I already knew he would cry. He's such a sweetheart. 🥰
David! Finally, I have someone who sees Daryl Hannah’s contribution to this film the same as I do. From the spot-on, never broken accent to that stellar performance. I thought it was just me but now I can say it’s due to others’ bad taste. Lord bless ‘em. Thanks!
They almost didn't cast her. Thought she was too pretty. She went back the next day in the "Arnelle" outfit and they wouldn't let her back in because they didn't recognize her.
OMG I ADORE this movie!!!! Love that you're watching it! Commenting before the reaction starts, but I hope Marc enjoyed it!! A mint julep is completely appropriate for this movie haha. Ouiser is the best!
I could be wrong but I think Shirley McClain saying she dressed as a nun is a reference to her role in "2 Mules for Sister Sara". It's a western with Clint Eastwood
I just realized something that's never occurred to me after all the times I've seen this film. Jack (Shelby's little boy) actually DID slap Ouiser! So they could sell those t-shirts after all, lol! 🤣
"Did you run over a small a child or something?" I have said this to my grumpy butt boyfriend on several occasions when he is unusually happy just after work.
Ouiser is my spirit “animal” 😂 what a classic! All 6 actrices nailed it but I agree with you Daryl Hanna completely disappeared; I looooove your reaction
The fact that Sally Field wasn't Oscar nominated for this role is an all-time snub for the Best Supporting Actress category. The monologue at the cemetery is like a Master Class in acting.
@@DavidvsFilm if I remember correctly, it was one of those situations where it split the votes on the nominating committee. Because of too many powerhouses and them all being considered "supporting actress". I could be wrong but that's the scuttlebutt at the salon as I remember it. So Julia ended up winning as a dark horse. Not that she wasn't good but let's face it, Sally Field was better.
This movie came out around the time I was told I should not have children. That I wouldn't be able to safely carry to term. I was about 19/20 & had other plans. I was a lot like Shelby in many ways then. My mom was so much like M'lynn. This was a very special movie for us to understand each other. And our /her friends. 11 pregnancies/1 live birth & I am still here and kicking. Thanks science. Nowadays, I relate most to Truvy.
For the record, yes, the family minister is played by Robertt Harling who wrote the play about his sister Susan. The nurses that attended to "Shelby" were also the nurses to Susan in her final days. GREAT video by the way.
Shelby is what is referred to as a brittle/insulin dependent diabetic. I had a friend once who had this form of diabetes. But my friend’s low_blood sugar levels were never that bad (as far as I know anyway) because anyone who knew her well enough could tell when her blood sugar levels were low because she kind of seemed to be spacing out and when you would try to tap her on the shoulder and call her name she wouldn’t respond and she would also start crying softley and the first person to notice that she was having blood sugar levels would shout out that she was having blood sugar issues and then someone would come over to the first aid room and help her check her blood sugar levels and they would give her some juice and something to eat and would sit with her until she was better.
There’s another great film in this vein of sisterhood and life long friendships called Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, starring Sandra Bullock, Maggie Smith, Ellen Burstyn, James Garner and so many more. Also, it takes place in Louisiana ❤ worth a watch
I'm so happy to find you guys with my favorite movie. This movie is my Bible that I quote often as scripture. I'm so happy to see other people appreciate this classic as much as I. I love this film dearly.
Hey Aimee!!! It's so good, right?? Definitely stands the test of time. I totally want to order shirts that read, "I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux", by the way lol
It's the best!!!! Please make those shirts😂😂😂 P.S. I know what you mean about how powerful that hall walk was with Sally. I think it's because you can feel her panic and you know she's walking into her nightmare. It ALWAYS got me too.
Not only was the priest the writer and brother of the real Shelby, but the woman at the funeral playing Jackson's mother (you mentioned her glasses) was his and the real Shelby's mother.
The real life "Jackson" remarried 6 months later, and their son started calling his stepmom "Mommy". Thats what prompted the brother to write the play.
Hello from Israel. What a marvelous reaction video. Can't recall when I've LMAO and then cried my eyes out and LMAO again ! You gentlemen are terrific !
One of my all time favorite movies. All the actresses do a phenomenal job and Tom Skeritt and Shirley MacLean are hilarious together. Also love the armadillo cake with the grey icing, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Louisiana girl here too 💜💛 I grew up in Winnfield just south of Natchitoches and I baby sat the little girl that danced with Dolly at the reception. My Mom and our cousin drove over and watched the filming.
I just found your. channel today. I've watched several channels react to this movie, and not a one got it, until now! I was born in Shreveport, and went to High School in Coushatta, just 25 miles from Natchitoches, where I saw the lights every Christmas, ran the roads, and Whitey Black was our Vet, as in the movie. It was a beautiful place to grow up. I loved your take on the accents, so spot on. This was a great reaction guys! Thank you!
Hey!!! Aww thank you so much! Oh heck yeah, I know Coushatta. Yeah I used to love going to Natchitoches because I was big into local history, and also we would go eat at Mariner's and think we were just the fanciest people in the world at the time lol
Born and raised in the South yet never had a mint julep. But I WAS one of those kids who ate at least a couple of the Easter eggs after the hunt. David, your knowing looks at the camera after, um, misdirecting Marc made me laugh out loud. Coincidentally, I saw this reaction not long after watching the latest episode of Yellowjackets in which (spoiler alert) young Misty performs Sally Field's big speech in the cemetery. (A good show for the channel, btw.)
My mother and I went to see this and the funeral scene had me weeping. My mother had the unfortunate experience of watching her father die before her eyes - so I was not only crying for Shelby but worried sick about how my mom was taking the scene. When Clairee did the “here, hit HER” line, my mother let out the biggest laugh and couldn’t stop. I was more like “how can you LAUGH right now?” Having lost both her and my only sibling (with just my dad left) I totally get it now. Also, the “Georgia” accent you mentioned is more a coastal accent. Mountain-ish area of SC where I’m from, we sound more like Dolly. Her part of eastern TN is closer to us than our own coast.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your memories of watching this with your Mom. Hearing sweet stories like that is absolutely my favorite part of getting to do this channel. Marc and I have a lot of fun watching these movies together, but we can do that on our own- this is what makes it special. I hope that you have a great week ahead ♥️
Guys, first time checking out your channel. I have to say, this is, in my opinion, the most perfectly edited reaction to Steel Magnolias I have seen. You hit all the little funnies that made this movie so good. And oh my God, yes, finally someone who agrees with me about that hair. And Ouiser, she hated it too.
Hey Susie thank you so much!! This was by far the hardest video I’ve edited because I wanted to leave everything in. It just killed my soul to cut anything lol. So I really appreciate you saying that. :)
The pastor was the real Susan's (Shelbys) brother who wrote the play. The hospital staff at the end was really there and did what was written. The paper work, turning off the machine, etc,,,
I grew up with this movie and can definitely quote it start to finish. Sally Field's character always reminded me a lot of my mom. 🥰 Great reaction as always. Poor Marc needing the tp again. 🥺
Great reaction ! It's nice to see people showing their true emotions when watching this ! I read that Shelby's based character real mother was on the set on her demand the day they shoot the scene when Shelby is dying because she wanted to see what she could not see in real life : Julia/Shelby getting up after life support is shut off. How heart-rending this is... Greetings from France guys 👋🏼🇫🇷
Great reaction you two! 😊 When I saw which movie this was I had to get some tissues ready before I started watching it. Such an emotional, yet fantastic movie with an outstanding cast. Forever one of my favorite Julia Roberts movies along with "Pretty Woman". Another great movie with Dolly Parton that I highly recommend if neither one of you have seen it yet is the 1980 "9 to 5". Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
Hey Randee!! Thank you so much :) And please- I could quote 9 to 5 in my sleep haha. I'll ask Marc if he has seen it though. One of hers that I have not seen and want to, though, is The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Hello David and Marc. I haven't seen many channels react to this movie so when your reaction popped up as a recommendation, I wanted to check it out. I'm SO GLAD I DID! I've since gone back and checked out a few more of your reactions (Lord of the Ring, Jaws, The Princess Bride, The Thing) and I've really enjoyed them. Your tone and commentary is right up my alley. I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but speaking for myself...I love it! I'll definitely be making my way through your reaction playlists over the next few weeks. Regarding this particular film, it's been a long time since I've seen it so it was fun to revisit through your reactions. The dialogue and chemistry between the actresses was so good. And given it was made in the late 80s, when not many movies with female led casts were made...it did very well. Also...don't worry about crying during reactions. These aren't just for laughter and screams. You'd be surprised how many of your viewers will be crying along with you when you watch movies like this. 😉 Looking forward to what you do next.
One of my favorite movies. Love the line " if you can't say anything nice about anybody come sit by me" Daryl.Hannah is not crazy lol. The minister u Is an actor that has been in a lot of tv shows and movies usually as a side or background character
I saw the play before I saw the movie, at The Alley Theatre, the Equity regional repertory theatre here in Houston, in 1989. They did it as soon as they could get the rights, towards the end of the off-Broadway production's run (it didn't open on Broadway until 2005) and just before the movie was released. It's also been staged in foreign countries; I would love to see how this translated to the stage in France or Japan.
You could smoke everywhere in the 80's. Before my daddy quit he used to smoke 5 PACKS A DAY! So yeah...he smoked everywhere but in our house!Mom hated it...I have memories of him being in the lab smoking his brains out while working....at the hospital of all places!!!! So glad that has changed!
When I was in high school ('89-'93), my best friend and I were volunteers at our local hospital. The hospital had a cigarette vending machine between the soda and snack vending machines. There was a sticker on it saying not to buy from it if you were underage.
Just found your channel with this video, and I love you two! Going back now to watch through other videos. I am not allowed to watch this movie when my husband is around for two reasons. First I recite it word for word, and second I cry like a baby. Thanks for your reaction on this!
you asked about how much of the dialogue is actually in the script. this script is almost word for word from the play it is based on. a few lines were dropped, moved, or given to other characters. but that was mainly because they expanded the cast beyond the core 6 women. also, the play takes place exclusively in the salon, so they were able to use visuals instead of lines to tell the story. if you ever have the chance to see the play, i recommend it. it was on broadway about 10/15 years ago. christine ebersole was amazing as m'lynn. the whole cast was great. delta burke as truvy, lily rabe as annelle, rebecca gayheart as shelby, frances sternhagen as clairee, & marsha mason as ouiser.
There are only a few movies that hit you so hard, you remember them for the rest of your life. This is one of mine. First...I have several 'Ouisers' in my life...or in reverse, I'm theirs. Second....there are so many quotable lines in this movie that friends my age use them on occasion...and we know just where they come from and what they mean. The movie hits you so hard during the funeral...and then just as you're drowning in tears....you get pulled out of it by the most wicked laugh imaginable! It's a movie about the love of our closest friends...and it would worry me if you didn't cry during it.
The reason they did Julia's hair that short is because she accepted the role of Tink in Hook. So she had to cut her hair and they needed to record more shots.
Wrong, Hook came out 2 years after Steel Magnolias And she wore a wig and Steel Magnolias. Actually, she also wore a long haired wig in Steel Magnolias for the wedding scenes as well.
Loved watching you react to the movie. "Steel Magnolias" is a roller coaster ride of emotions. This is one of my favorite movies: the story line is great, there are so many funny moments and one-liners thrown in here and there, the back and forth banter between Drum and Weezer and Weezer and Claree is priceless, the unspoken camaraderie between the ladies........it just all works so well and says much more than could be conveyed in wordy script. It's a story well told , full of laughs and tears, warmth and angst; and I really like how we are taken through the years by just using seasonal decorations. You did a great review of the movie. So glad you enjoyed it so much.
Thank you so much!! This one never gets old for those of us who have seen it, and it’s never TOO old for someone to discover it for the first time! I’m so glad you liked the reaction to it Shelly :)
this is my go-to film when I need to cry, i watch it at least 4x a year. Even after all these years, I will never understand why they did that to Shelby's hair... and to make it even worse, they gave her an almost exact wig in Hook when she was Tinkerbell, different color but similar cut. lol
She filmed Hook right after this movie, that's why they did it. She talks about it on a bunch of interviews. This came out in 89, she filmed Hook in 1990, and it came out in 91.
I thought "you did him wrong.".. and then he's saying "oh I love this, Why didn't we watch this before Now?"..and I'm just rolling my eyes..wait..yup.@@DavidvsFilm
Never. The rest of us were always complaining."
ROBERT HARLING "We were shooting part of the Christmas scene, and this was in the dead of August, and we were sitting out on the porch of Truvy’s beauty shop.
I love Dolly!
OMG this is amazing, thank you, Kathy!! I have yet to hear any quote or anecdote either from or about Dolly Parton that I don't absolutely love.
She’s a national treasure and should be protected at all costs.
And this is why Ted Nugent just shot himself in the foot by attacking Dolly saying she writes and sings satanic music. You do NOT attack Dolly.
Thanks for your comment Billy! That was Marc’s favorite part too, actually.
That line starts the waterworks every time. Even after all these 100+ viewings over the years. Lol
Every. Single. Time.
I always thought that line was profound...because your mom is the first person on this earth knows you are actually here.
Don't ever apologize for getting emotional and shedding a tear, especially during a movie designed to make you cry.
'Don't ever' is so assertive. Dang, lol.
The hair cut that Julia Roberts got looks like the hairstyle she had when she played Tinkerbell in the Robin Williams movie Hook
Maybe the same wig
It was awful in both.
@theConquerersMama ahhhhahahahahaha
Looks like she ran that thing through the dishwasher and then let it air dry (no offense to Truvy)
If you like this one, Fried Green Tomatoes should be on your list. ❤
Yes!
DEFINITELY!!!
Whereas I have seen Steel Magnolias more times than probably the actual cast has, I have only seen Fried Green Tomatoes once. I am not sure if Marc has (this is David typing- hi!), but I'll ask. I would love to watch that one :)
100% Tawanda!
Oh my goodness, yessss, fried green tomatoes 🥰 and Terms of endearment 💓
Her brother and the author played the minister.
@@lizrutherford2656 You sound like me, Liz!
When my daughter passed away, my friend called me and said she will be my "Ouiser" if I felt the need to hit anyone. That one comment made me realize that I had women in my corner! This is the best movie to show the power of friends and laughter to get through the ups and downs of life.
Don't apologize for crying. I cry every time I watch this.
Glad you picked up on her performance too as it’s somewhat overlooked.
aren't you guys just adorable, bless your hearts!
Hahaha. And if you’re familiar with the other popular saying, “Well isn’t that niiice.” 😂😂
@@DavidvsFilmhoney, I'm familiar with a lot of sh t!
Fun fact, the Pastor in the movie was actually the real life brother of the character based on Shelby
@@darrenleone6988Glad to know Mariner's is still there. Hope I get some time to spend there again now that I have retired.
" Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion."😢😂
I love that you mentioned loving the shot of M'Lynn coming down the hallway. Anytime I’m on a hard floor in shoes that click, I have a picture of her with her purse power walking down that hall!
Yes!! Same haha. And then I can’t remember if I mentioned it in the reaction, but to this day a friend of mine and I still paraphrase the kidney surgeon when something is going well- “Looks good. Looks real, real good.”
@@DavidvsFilm I'm ashamed to admit how many times my best friend and I have said, in a distressed voice, "Don't talk about me like I'm not here."

I’m so sorry to hear that. I can definitely understand why it would be a tough movie to watch. Thank you for sharing your memory with us :)
In real life, Shelby's [Susan's] husband actually remarried six months after her passing. 🤨😒
'Susan died in the fall of 1985.
When my husband and I got married, I INSISTED that when our justice of the peace asked "Who gives this woman away?" that my dad responded "Her mother and I do!" all because I saw this movie as a kid and decided thats what I wanted when I grew up😂
Ok, that is amazing haha. I love it!!
@laurathornton1456 that's absolutely hysterical
Most definitely Fried Green Tomatoes and Beaches. ❤
Thank you!! Fried Green Tomatoes is coming up in a couple of weeks 😎
Aw, honey. Bless you. My best on raising your miracle. My best on your dialysis.

I grew up in Shreveport too! This came out when I was in high school and me and my bff were front and center at the theater when this premiered, sobbing our eyes out! 😂
Shreveport! Yeah I didn’t know how diabetes worked when I first saw it, and afterwards I told my mom, “I’m never eating candy again.”
@@DavidvsFilm oh gosh! I never knew it was like that either! My pop had it and it made him blind, but I thought it was from him drinking his white lightening! My pop was a Tennessee farm boy! 😂

33:32 no apologies necessary. If that scene doesn't hit you you're soulless.
Well said :)
Loooove all of this lol. Thank you, @Jokerz 79
Thank you so much!! I bet that whole theater was in shock when the "fun Sally-Dolly-Shirley-Daryl-Olympia-Julia comedy" turned into a sobfest.
Such a great blend of heartfelt pain with hilarity!
First time in my life experiencing the sudden flip from tears to laughter.
Thanks!
She and the man who was her husband in this movie were both great. IMO
They almost didn't cast her. Thought she was too pretty. She went back the next day in the "Arnelle" outfit and they wouldn't let her back in because they didn't recognize her.
I love this movie so much. It took my a long time to finish this movie because I didn't want Shelby to die. I cried a lot. The best cast ever.
Luis!! My man. Right?? It lures you in with its hilarious banter and excellent one-liners, then BAM. Waterworks.
OMG I ADORE this movie!!!! Love that you're watching it! Commenting before the reaction starts, but I hope Marc enjoyed it!! A mint julep is completely appropriate for this movie haha. Ouiser is the best!
Hello my buddy!!!! I'm so glad you like this one. Yeah, he LOVED it. And I'm of course glad that you approve of the Mint Julep ;)
I could be wrong but I think Shirley McClain saying she dressed as a nun is a reference to her role in "2 Mules for Sister Sara". It's a western with Clint Eastwood
Love that flick; one of my mom's favorites. Ms. McClain was crazy beautiful.
One of my all time favorites.
Got my peach tea, tomatoes & tissues.
Hahaha. You were brought up right, Angela…
Agreed.
For real!!! I was SHOCKED. Honestly, I thought all if not most of them had been, but especially her! I was stunned to see it was only Julia.
Absolutely.
My best friend and I say that to this day" you know I love ya more then my luggage!"
But my friend’s low_blood sugar levels were never that bad (as far as I know anyway)
because anyone who knew her well enough could tell when her blood sugar levels were low because she kind of seemed to be spacing out and when you would try to tap her on the shoulder and call her name she wouldn’t respond and she would also start crying softley and the first person to notice that she was having blood sugar levels would shout out that she was having blood sugar issues and then someone would come over to the first aid room and help her check her blood sugar levels and they would give her some juice and something to eat and would sit with her until she was better.
Awww such good friends :) Thanks for sharing this story ♥️

A classic.
Not only was the priest the writer and brother of the real Shelby, but the woman at the funeral playing Jackson's mother (you mentioned her glasses) was his and the real Shelby's mother.
Oh! Really?? Well crap, now I feel bad for ragging on the glasses 😬
The real life "Jackson" remarried 6 months later, and their son started calling his stepmom "Mommy".
Thats what prompted the brother to write the play.

Dang David, digging the beardier looking beard! Hope it’s growing on ya!
Yeah? Thanks. It was really just because I was lazy with getting my hair cut, so I had to let the beard grow to compensate lol

You did it again @32:35! You're a bad man, and I adore you for it.
This is the first reaction of y'all's that I am seeing, and I'm loving this so far.
Hannah does not get enough credit...Totally agree with you David.
I was more like “how can you LAUGH right now?”
Having lost both her and my only sibling (with just my dad left) I totally get it now.

Hey Dannyboy! Thank you so much for your kind words. Greetings back to you from Houston!
Great reaction you two! 😊
When I saw which movie this was I had to get some tissues ready before I started watching it.
9 to 5 is AWESOME!!
Olympia Dukakis was amazing in this, Moonstruck and Cemetery Club.
Looking forward to what you do next.
One of my favorite movies.
Love the line " if you can't say anything nice about anybody come sit by me"
Daryl.Hannah is not crazy lol.
The minister u
Is an actor that has been in a lot of tv shows and movies usually as a side or background character
So many good one liners 😂😂
I saw the play before I saw the movie, at The Alley Theatre, the Equity regional repertory theatre here in Houston, in 1989. They did it as soon as they could get the rights, towards the end of the off-Broadway production's run (it didn't open on Broadway until 2005) and just before the movie was released. It's also been staged in foreign countries; I would love to see how this translated to the stage in France or Japan.
That's a great observation of Daryl Hannah! Another great role she is in, The Hot Flashes! She's hysterical
Thanks for the recommendation! I don’t remember that one.
Love the hairspray face guard!😂
Lol. I grew up with them.
My son still laughs when I use mine.
It was so awful.
I was/am allergic & constantly told to just get over it.
@@theConquerersMama That stinks...sorry to hear about your allergy...some people really lack empathy at times.
@@Rees2005 yeah the past was the worst. 😂
Thank you
When I was in high school ('89-'93), my best friend and I were volunteers at our local hospital.
Absolutely perfectly cast
The reason they did Julia's hair that short is because she accepted the role of Tink in Hook. So she had to cut her hair and they needed to record more shots.
Wrong, Hook came out 2 years after Steel Magnolias And she wore a wig and Steel Magnolias. Actually, she also wore a long haired wig in Steel Magnolias for the wedding scenes as well.
Today I realized I will never be the same. My daughter is so wonderful.
@@codyt821 WAIT!! That isn't a wig????! The haircut is sooooo tragic. It's so so bad. lol
“Is this foreshadowing?” “ no. Nuh-no they’re just worried.”
Bad bad man.😂😂😂😂
Lol, I plead the 5th.
I thought "you did him wrong.".. and then he's saying "oh I love this, Why didn't we watch this before Now?"..and I'm just rolling my eyes..wait..yup.@@DavidvsFilm
I think she actually cut her hair too because a two years later they released Hook, where she played Tinkerbell.
i love this movie so much and have so many good memories watching it with my mom and grandma growing up
Isn’t it great?? I mean definitely has its devastating moments, but overall heartwarming :)
Daryl Hannah was in Sense8 in 2015. You guys need to watch that show! Amazing!!❤
This came out the year I graduated high school!! Such a beautiful movie!!❤❤This girl misses the 80s!
They had to add the dramatic hair cut because that's when she got the Tinkerbell part in Hook
