Madeline Kahn is, quite simply, one of the funniest human beings who has ever existed on this planet. And presumably on any other planet, though I'm sure Uranus has some real cut-ups.

Fun facts - when this was released, there were movie theaters that only received 1 of the 3 endings and if you wanted to see all three back then, you had to go to three separate places to see the other endings.
The singing telegraph girl was played by Jane Wiedlin, who was a member of the one of the most successful all-girl groups of the 1980s, "The Go-Gos," she also had one solo top 10 hit in 1988, "Rush Hour" that peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1988.
Colleen Camp, who played Yvette, had a minor role playing Reese Witherspoon's mother in the dark comedy (and it's frigging GOOD), "Election."
Mr. Green, played by Michael McKean, gained fame as Lenny (of Lenny & Squiggy) on "Laverne & Shirley"
Both Eileen Brennan & Leslie Ann Warren had recurring roles on "Will & Grace." Eileen played Jack's acting coach, Zondra & Leslie Ann played Tina, the woman who was having the affair with Will's dad.
Leslie Ann was not supposed to be in the movie as the actress who was to play her had to withdraw because she was entering rehab because of her drug/alcohol addiction and that was the late great Carrie Fisher. Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) was the original choice for Wadsworth, but the director didn't think he was well known at that time and that's why Tim Curry was given the role.
This was "Friends" before the TV show, as all actors were paid the same salary, no matter who was more well-known then the others.

Not only are there alternate endings, if you buy the DVD or Blu-ray you get all three and it'll pick one at random to show you, so you can be surprised. You can also choose to play all three endings in a row to see all of them.

Yeah honestly I didn’t know that theaters showed different endings. That’s so cool and a brilliant strategy on their part actually, to attract repeat viewings. I did the same with repeat viewings of Titanic, but every time the ship still went down and Rose hogged the whole door for herself. 🤷‍♂️

    Two bits of trivia:
I read that the house was (sadly) a set. But a couple scenes, like the ballroom, were filmed on location.
I was amazed when I found out that Madeline Kahn improvised her "flames ... on the side of my head" speech. The lady was a genius.
And a suggestion for another reaction, since you enjoyed Clue, is Murder by Death, from 1976. Similar in that it's an all-star cast comedy murder mystery set in a creepy manor house. It also stars Eileen Brennan, and Maggie Smith, and a load of other legends.

    • @DavidvsFilm

9:48 There was a musical stage productions based on the movie back in 1997/98, it lasted 29 performances and 17 previews
it included an interactive feature in which audience members randomly select cards that determine which suspect committed the murder, which weapon was used, and in what room the murder took place. Based on the cards drawn, the mystery has 216 possible endings, for which the script provides appropriate selections of dialogue to be delivered at the show's conclusion.

There are a lot of little clues and Easter eggs in this movie. At dinner, Colonel Mustard says "the female of the species is more deadly than the male," and in the first two endings all the murderers were women. Wadsworth says the police will arrive in 45 minutes and that how much time passes until the cops come, the secret passages and layout of the rooms is the same as on the board game, etc. And just like in a game, any player could be the murderer, which is why the 3rd ending is what really happened.

I left in "I got news for you, it's already here" because I've actually been paraphrasing that quote at home since we watched this haha.

But I use Miss Scarlet line so often, nearly daily "You ain't just whistlin' 'Dixie'". I use it anytime someone says something that I would respond to with "Right!?"
Another one of favorites is the one that cracked you up:
Plumb: What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death?
Peacock: No, just death, isn't that enough?
It's just filled with so many great one-liners and quotes. It's a classic. It's actually recently (past twenty years or so) become the new Rocky Horror Picture Show in terms of live performances where the audience shout the lines of dialogue.

The game came first. Each of the endings showed in a different theater. They weren't all shown together until they put it on vhs.
because finding a huge house that matched the layout of the Clue board game almost exactly probably would have been an issue, the filmmakers opted to build the interior of Hill House on a soundstage on the Paramount Studio lot in Hollywood, California.
All interior scenes were filmed at the Paramount lot, except the ballroom scene. The ballroom, as well two driveway exteriors, were filmed on location at a mansion in South Pasadena, California. This site was destroyed in a fire on October 5, 2005.

The more you watch this the more you see the details. In the game, each character is wearing their character’s color, however, in the movie, each of their cars is the color of their alias. When you think back to Mr Boddy being the butler, you realize when you rewatch it just how desperate he was to get out of the house. Then he resorted to trying to have the real Mr Boddy killed so they could be free.

Ugh… this movie is *SO* fucking good! Brilliance such as this is only possible when you have an *incredible* script/writing being *expertly* brought to life by genuinely *amazing* acting!
In my opinion, it’s pretty rare to have to have an ensemble cast in which each and every actor *murders* (Pun intended! lol.) their role!
They used to play this on HBO/Showtime/Cinemax _and_ several different cable stations when I was a kid, thus I know the movie inside and out!!
As far as a remake goes… I _really_ don’t think that they should _ever_ attempt to make one. I mean, there _are_ writers/directors/actors out there who are able to pull of films in a _somewhat_ similar, murder-mystery-comedy vein (See: Knives Out & Glass Onion.), Clue is the definition of “lightning in a bottle” and no matter how good of a remake they were to do, they could simply _never_ capture the magic of the original!

Like the idea is the board game; this movie was to have multiple endings; 4 to be exact, but the fourth was cut before it was finished filming. The movie was released with one of the 3 endings, and they gave you a mini Clue sheet to keep track of who the murderer was. I was able to see 2 of the 3 endings in theaters, but I didn't see the final ending until the movie was released on home media.
The only other movie like this was Murder By Death (1976), and also featured Eileen Brennan amongst its cast. Great movie and cast Thawte as well, but that movie will keep you guessing well after it ends

I saw this in the theater when it came out, and as some mentioned, audiences initially only saw one of the 3 endings. I think in our theater, you could see other endings by waiting for the next release…like every 2 weeks they’d release a different version. Another movie I think you’d enjoy and also didn’t seem to get the props I think it deserved was “Noises Off”…another star-packed cast including John Ritter, Carol Burnett, and Christopher Reeve. If you do watch it, I will say that the first 15 minutes may seem a bit boring, but it is setting up the rest of the movie, and it’s totally worth it. So funny!

Oh my gosh! I love this movie so much! It's one of my top favorite comfort movies. So much fun! And with a great cast.
The scene where Wadsworth is explaining how the murders were committed is one of the best scenes. And I love all three endings.

Fun Fact #2: Carrie Fisher(Star Wars' Princess Leia) was originally supposed to play Miss Scarlett. But had to go to rehab four days before the start of filming.

Great reaction. Such a fun movie. It did awfully at the theaters. I used to work at a video rental place at the time. So, I got a discount and was able to watch a lot of different stuff. This is one I took home and wondered, “Why wasn’t this popular?” I think maybe… 1) it’s a bit too kitchy for some and 2) the theater version didn’t show the multiple endings. So, most theater viewers probably thought… “meh, cute… but whatever”. The rental and, eventually, DVD market really drove this movie. It’s fabulous. And the cast
My advice… react to the similarly oriented movie Murder By Death. A ****way**** underrated movie with a similarly phenomenal cast. It’s a little more subtle with its ridiculousness. So, you need to pay attention. But it’s fabulous. And, unbelievably, one of the main actresses is in both… Eileen Brennen. Give it a watch. Murder By Death. Great film!

Great reaction guys! I've always heard of this movie, but I've never seen it. I didn't know there was so much comedy though! I always thought that it was a drama/who-dun-it. Tim Currey should have been a hint for the comedy, but he does do dramas from time to time. I wasn't aware of the rest of the cast, so I didn't know Madeline Kahn was in this. But this almost has a "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie element to it, but this has more comedy. (A group of strangers are invited and brought together to a house under false pretenses, except they are all being accused of killing someone from their pasts. They too are not allowed to leave, because the house is on an island only reached by boat. Then over the course of a few days, they all are killed off one by one, never knowing who it is and never meeting their supposed host, until they realize one of the guests has to be the murderer. Then they all start turning on each other).

Obviously Knives Out took its premise from Clue but the comedy is just STELLAR in this movie.

Aww no disrespect to him! I’m just talking. I’m sure he’s a cool dude and he was a great Mr. Boddy.

This movie actually has more than one ending. People wouldn't know which ending they'd get, depending on what copy their theater received.

So in 85 you didn't know which ending you would get. There were the 3, for the DVD they put them all on. I also remember eventually theaters were advertising the ending they had.

I think that's really cool. I would have loved that if I were seeing in the theaters.

Jonathan Lynn, who co wrote this also wrote Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. It's hilarious 😂. You should check it out.
