Hey guys! Due to your EXCELLENT advice, I went back and watched the end credits and did a special Short reaction for it. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsEMJJJUNYYfc
Pretty much every person has a real person or 2 they take direct inspiration from. Kelly Candaele, who co-wrote the film's story, drew inspiration from his mother and aunt. They were the first sisters in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League
My father passed away not long before this movie came out. When it hit home-vhs, I watched it with my mom, while holding my newborn son in my arms. I grew up in a suburb of Rockford and loved watching baseball with my dad. So when that final song came on I just lost it! So many lines hit way too close to home! -- This used to be my playground. And why do they always say, don't look back... ((sigh)) I still cry every time I hear it.
It's really not bull that when Dotty said her sister got herself into the league. She's absolutely right. Kit had to try out the same as the rest. The scout let Kit come along as long as Dotty did but that was just for the train ride there. Once there it was all on Kit to try out and make it in. edit: if you watch to the end of the credits, you'll see women playing ball. Those are REAL members of the league. :)
You know what, that's actually a really good point that I hadn't thought of! Thank you- point taken :) I am going to go back and watch the full credits then upload that as a short, since several folks have pointed out how good they are ;)
Dah-veed! Yes, yes, yes! This is based on the real women who played professional baseball while the men went off to war. This is one of my favorite movies! All the actresses were trained to play baseball. There is a behind the scenes of it where all the ladies trained for months to get into playing shape. The girl who played Alice really did sustain the injury you saw where Tom Hanks takes a picture of it. It was all spontaneous. Penny Marshall didn’t realize how hurt the actress was until they helped her into the dugout while waiting for medical. They were still filming where it ended up being used. Anyway, one of the best sports movies out there. I saw this in the theater and knew it was based on true events. I cried like a baby at the end and then Madonna’s “This Used to be My Playground” made me ugly cry even worse! And that old Gena Davis is not Gena Davis but a real actress they found who resembled her. She just dubbed her voice over. Pretty good if you couldn’t tell the difference. 😏❤️
Thank you so much for all the info my friend!!! I just cannot believe that about the bruise! That's horrible, poor woman :( This was such an amazing movie. And I was serious about not being a huge sports fan but really enjoying sports movies. Just like with all the other reaction videos, I understandably have to cut so much due to copyright laws. So it killed me to have to omit some of the really great action from the games scenes. These ladies all did so well!!! I am going to watch the end credits scene tomorrow, btw, and probably do a Short or something to accompany this. You know how bad I am at forgetting to watch credits!!! lol
Its a true story. This was my grandmothers favorite movie. She was originally from Racine before coming to Philadelphia & meeting my grandfather. They were my best friends & miss them so much! Thank u for reacting to this- made me cry. 😇❤
I love this story about your grandparents!!! Thank you so much for sharing it ♥️ It sounds like you guys were all lucky to have had such great times together :)
One of my favorite movies of all time! Just wanted to pop in and say older Dottie was played by Lynn Cartwright, they just dubbed her with Geena Davis' voice. It was always very confusing as a child watching it lol
I had no idea when I watched!!! She nailed it! I thought that Geena was in makeup, but they hired character actresses for the others. Wow, that's a great match.
Yes!!! I was just saying in a separate comment how - even though sad - the news of Betty Spaghetti's husband dying didn't get me worked up. But I did legit almost cry at the scene where Shirley can't read her own name. I LOVED that they gave a nod to the adult illiteracy issue with that heartfelt scene, and I also loved how Helen helped her ♥️ Thank you so much for your comment
i live in the town where the boarding house is and the baseball field where the games were shot is just across the river, it’s one of the oldest operating fields in the country. i saw this movie when i was little and remember falling in love with it instantaneously before knowing i had such close ties to those locations. the whole thing is so well acted and funny. also, the skirts were legitimate uniforms and the massive bruise alice got on her thigh was a real injury, very similar to the types of injuries the players actually saw.
The prayer that Jimmy gives before the last game…my hs field hockey coach gave us the same prayer before one of our playoff games. It was so funny! This was right around the time this movie came out. She also use the intro song in our end of the season video. ❤️
I am a huge baseball fan, Texas Rangers all the way! Yes, this is based on real events. The team names they used are the real deal. This movie is one of my favorite baseball movies because it does lightly tell the story about these ladies stepping in during World War II to do what they could.
Thank you for telling me! I assumed as much, but I'm so used to movies nowadays really throwing it in your face that it's a true story, based on true events, etc etc. This one did it so casually and respectfully, I wasn't sure. Excellent film!
This is definitely near the top of my all-time favorite movies list. Penny Marshall did a phenomenal job! You are literally the only reactor that I’ve seen that knew who Squiggy was. That made my Gen X heart so happy! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And great job recognizing Teo Leoni. It seems like no one recognizes her as a brunette. 💁🏻♀️🤣 The “there’s no crying… There’s no crying in baseball!“ is usually the go-to quote from this movie. But I have to say that I have used the “use your head! It’s that lump 3 feet above your ass!“ more times than I care to admit. 😬😅🤣 I did skimmed through some of the comments and I didn’t notice the top comments mentioning this, but the older women playing ball at the beginning/end of the movie were real players from the actual AAGPBL. They truly still had the right stuff! As for Tom Hanks, I honestly can’t name a movie that he hasn’t peed in. But if you can find one, then you win! For me, this was pretty much a masterpiece by Penny Marshall. The other movie of hers that rates this high, for me anyway, is Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. BTW, when they were in one of the charm school scenes and the instructor said, “a lady reveals nothing“, the part where Lori/Kit starts laughing, that was not in the script. She couldn’t keep it together whenever she heard that line. That was a natural and actual laugh. Penny thought it was good and left it in the movie. Also, my family and I had gone to the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York around the same time we saw this movie, and the AAGPBL’s section was not nearly the size shown in the film. It was still shot in the Hall of Fame, but in the movie they used the portrait/paintings room, where huge paintings of baseball seemed pictures were at. There were several Norman Rockwell paintings in there. The actual AAGPBL section was only about a half a wall in size. May be about 10 to 15 feet long. It was a little disappointing, but understandable, since the size of the building had limited what they could do. Happy belated fourth! Once again, great reaction! And good luck with the haunted house! 👀👻😱 Much love to you and Marc!!! And… PLAY BALL!!! 🇺🇸⚾️🙌🏻💙💙💙
I hadn't seen this yet either cause I don't like sports, but whenever you react to a movie I haven't seen we watch it before your reaction. I was surprised at how much I liked this movie. Marla really hit home for me cause I've been there! I was so happy for her when she got married, and she became the CUTEST little old lady lol. I sobbed when Betty found out her husband died, and I cried again watching your reaction. I can't imagine how that must feel.
You guys are the BEST!! And no pressure, right?? Now that I know this little tidbit, I have to make SURE I pick good movies lol. I loved this though! It's so weird how sometimes the emotions hit with mee and other times not. The acting, the pacing, everything was done perfectly in the notification scene, but it didn't bring on the waterworks like Green Mile did, for example. But strangely enough, the scene that DID catch me off-guard and almost make me start to tear up was the scene where Shirley Baker wasn't able to read her own name. Her sweet, pitiful face and how the other lady helped her- that almost got to me.
PLEASE do The Bad News Bears (1976). It's considered among the top sports movies of all time. It's the movie that launched two generations of kids' sports films. The original and still the best. Enjoying this reaction. Such a fun film.
Thank you so much for recommending this! I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget. I know that it's Walter Matthau and he's coaching a little league team I believe, but that's about it. So this would be great for a reaction video ;)
@@DavidvsFilm Cool. I think you'll get a LOT of views; honestly. Matthau is at his absolute quintessential Matthau in it. The kids are such great little actors and so accurately represent 1970s era kids. I'd be so psyched to see a reactor do this. Thanks!!
I really enjoyed this movie when it first came out and watch it once a year when baseball season starts. A couple of historical notes. Unlike in the movie, the AAGPBL was a success from the get go. People in these smaller mid West towns were starved to see pro ball being played in a town close to them. Also - the League prospered until 1954. Television, not the war, killed the League because now people could watch the Cubs or Cardinals on TV. And on a side note, David Landers (Squiggy) who played the announcer was a part time baseball scout for the Dodgers. He had been diagnosed with MS just before filming started.
Great reaction! I adore this movie and I still can't believe it was ignored in some obvious categories at the Oscars: Best Actress (Geena Davis), Best Movie, Best Director (Penny Marshall), Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Original Song (Madonna) !!!
Thank you so much!! It was so good, right?? And I agree- especially with the subject matter and how well it was done, US history, etc., I figured it would be a shoo in for nominations.
Those are actually all older ladies at Copperstown. The women playing the older Dottie and Kit (Lynn Cartwright and Kathleen Butler) were fantastic casting.
100% agree with you. And speaking of the older ladies, one of my friends on Patreon said that I need to go back and do a Short with a reaction to the actual players at the end, so I may do that. :)
David, you never disappoint! Got the belly laugh I needed when Kit was crying on the pitcher's mound, and you deadpan muttered "There's no crying in baseball". I just finished watching all 8 seasons of GOT because of you and Marc. I wanted to watch each episode just before you put out the reaction, but I'm weak and I binged the whole series in about two weeks lol. Thank you for getting me into something I've waited far too long to enjoy. Now I can just sit back, relax, and watch you and Marc react. Enjoy the 4th!
This was such an important movie for my family when I was a kid. My mom comes from a baseball family, so we had to see it when it came out. Her dad played shortstop for the California Angels before they became pro. His dad managed a AAA team in Las Vegas. One of his brothers and uncles also played (one was catcher and one was pitcher). Even after WWII my grandfather kept playing for AAA teams up until my mom was 5 or 6 when his knees finally gave him too much trouble. Great reaction as always!
Bitty Schram who plays Evelyn “No crying in baseball” girl, is such an underrated actress. She plays such a soft, sweet and delicate girl here, but on Monk she plays one tough cookie!
@@DavidvsFilm All I can say is I miss the show, it was a really fun and entertaining watch. At least it lives on reruns or streams, but the excitement of a new episode.. one of my all time favorite definitely. Hope you get to check it out sometime. I don’t know how it will translate over to reaction videos, cause every episode is kind of independent from one another, but there still is an over all theme and storyline for the whole show. So it might work. So if you do I’ll check it out for sure.
Love love love this movie. Took me a while because I still bawl whenever Betty is notified, but now I think to myself at least she won't have to tell George that Jimmy destroyed his card.
Such a good movie! I've been to the Baseball Hall of Fame with my brothers and was only interested in the area dedicated to the AAGPRL! This movie was how Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell first met, and the director of this movie, Penny Marshall, her daughter played Betty "Spaghetti" Horn. And originally, there was supposed to be a romantic angle between Jimmy Dugan and Dottie Hinson, but Penny decided to cut that from the movie. One scene was at the Suds Bucket, when Dottie was trying to get Marla out of there. Jimmy Dugan and Ira Lowenstein walk in and see them, but before Ira approaches them, Jimmy knocks him out from behind, giving Dottie and Marla the chance to get out. The other scene was Dottie and Jimmy out on the field practicing with the pitching machine, and they share a kiss, but Dottie takes off out of guilt. That scene was supposed to take place before we see Dottie crying in her room, and then being surprised by the arrival of her husband Bob.
Penny Marshall was a brilliant director & I have to believe she helped with the script too. She insisted everyone had to literally try out & either be able to play or was athletic already & could be trained. Madonna was pretty much the best athlete & was coached for her role. Apparently a number of well know actresses wanted parts but couldn’t play, so didn’t get it.
Enjoyed the movie, but disagree on your Madonna take. It looked to me like she never swung a bat in her life. Easily, the best ballplayer/actress was Lori Petty. She could hit, field, throw, and run like the wind. She was terrific.
I never know if I'm going to cry or not, and this one didn't end up getting me at the end. HOWEVER, I did almost cry at poor Shirley Baker. Ann Cusack's embarrassed, desperate expression and the way that Helen jumped up to help her about got to me.
Ok can I tell you- I did not EVEN realize that!! When I saw her last name was "Reiner", I thought "Oh ok, I'm sure she's related to Rob or Carl Reiner, and it's probably that Hollywood connection among families, etc etc." I had no idea that Penny Marshall was married to Rob Reiner!! I feel like I need to give back my Pop Culture Amateur Expert card now..
Thank you @OneThousandHomoDJs, yes!! You are right about that. For me the "rewatchability test" is if I actually look forward to editing the video. This movie was a delight to edit :)
I always think of seemingly unrelated things to tell you while watching you react.😅 Please bear with my bumper car pavilion of a brain. Bill Paxton is in a movie with Annie Potts, Tim Curry, and more character actors than you can shake a stick at. I could never find it on DVD or streaming, but it recently showed up on UA-cam! It is a weird and wonderful 80s comedy, if you are ever in the mood to watch something completely unknown and zany. 😁 It is called "Pass the Ammo" from 1988. P.S. I loved watching League of Their Own with you today, I haven't watched it in ages. 🥰
Just so you know, the older characters were not in makeup. Lynn Cartwright played older Geena Davis and Kathleen Butler was older Lori Petty. It's genuinely astounding how much the older actors look like the younger ones. I swear Kathleen Butler and Lori Petty are at least related
As others have said, this is based off of a true story, the series is also great, for different reasons. Also, saw the exhibit at the baseball hall of fame, it was great.
Hey love! I did’nt get any notifications? Well.. i’m here now! ❤️❤️❤️ this is one of my old .. not horror., favourites! Oh! And a happy 4:th to you and Marc!
Hello!!!! And I'm late in replying, so we're a great team! lol. Yeah this one ended up being really good, a very fun watch. I am ready for more horror!!!
Any game related injury was real... Including the huge thigh/hip bruise. The actress really did slide into the base for that scene and came back with that nasty bruise!
Good job spotting Megan Cavanagh as Marla and Brunhilda in Men In Tights. She was in quite a few movies and did a lot of voice acting, mostly in Jimmy Neutron.
You mentioned if there was something going on between Dotty and Jimmy. There was a scene shot where they end up kissing. It was when Dottie comes out to the field, during the scene when Jimmy was hitting against the pitching machine. Even though the scene was shot, Penny Marshall decided against using it, because she said it didn't feel right for Dottie's character.
Yeah, I totally agree. I definitely could feel the chemistry between them, but it would have muddled the story and not been a good look on the characters. Thanks for sharing this though!! I appreciate it :)
One of the best Baseball movies ever made, with a stellar cast. And yes, it was based on a real true story, at least the overall story of the AAGPBL, but maybe not the individual vignettes. Of course the owner of the League was Mr. Wrigley, of Wrigley's Gum fame,, that's why the tryouts were at the real Wrigley Field in Chicago. BTW Dave, I dig the David Vs. Film Baseball Shirt, very cool.
Was a true story but they did change a few things… instead of Mr Harvey “the candy bar king” it was Mr Wriggley of the Chiacgo Cubs… (who also made wriggleys gum)
Besides this movie, my favorite sports films are "The Natural" w/ Robert Redford, "Hoosiers" w/ Gene Hackman and "Rudy" w/ Sean Astin. Have you seen any of these?
I haven't watched the film in 15 years. I remembered it being good, but i forgot how good. Ernie has the best lines. General Hammon! Always love seeing Don. At first you feel bad for Stillwell that her husband is being an a-hole and making her take the kid, then you see the kid and I forgive the father for shipping him off. Am I the only one that finds leaving right before the World Series unforgivable? Does Tom Hanks ever do less than a great job? I actually like Rosie in this movie, can't think of another. The Hall of Fame is within a days trip distance of us, if you ever want to go lol.
Haha is Hammon what made you think of Stargate earlier over on Patreon? I've seen him in other things, but I couldn't place him right off. I laughed out loud at your, "I actually like Rosie in this movie, can't think of another." LOL. And HECK YEAH, road trip!!! If I didn't have my 9-5, that would be my ultimate dream for the channel, btw. Combine travel and reaction videos to where one would be the reaction of the movie, and the other would be a vlog documenting the filming locations or where the stories took place, etc. I'd love that.
I actually saw that one!!! totally agree- great sports movie. One of my favorite series of all time is actually Friday Night Lights (didn't like the movie version as much). I love that show even though I'm not big on football.
@@DavidvsFilm Oh, I forgot about her too ! What a cast. I used to work at Tower Video on Sunset and Whoopi Goldberg would come in a hang out for hours talking with the staff. Two doors down was my favorite drinking hangout and Vince Vieluf (the speach impediment guy in Rat Race) and I had a few good times there.
Ok David...we have got to talk about your house! Are you protecting yourself? Lemme know...I'm not an expert but have some of my own unusual moments of unexplainability so I recommend by starting with Sage and Palo Santo to cleanse the space. Seriously, I really hope your home isn't haunted!!!!! I'm a lil' worried for you and Marc.😳
Hahahaha I think it's only Alexa being crazy, but we'll probably find out around Halloween season for sure. I'll keep the sage, garlic, and crucifix handy.
The womens league is true. Some of the characters were based on real players. The actors had to attend a boot camp so they looked like they could genuinely play. They had to learn to pitch, slide, bat, everything. The scene where they take a photo of a big bruise on a players thigh was true. She got that sliding to the base as you see in the film. The older players at the exhibition opening and at the game at the end were some of the real league players.
Oh really?? That's awesome!! Your hometown is definitely different than mine then- if they had made a movie like this about Bossier City, Louisiana, I assure you that we'd have a museum dedicated to it, autographed headshots of the stars in the bank lobby, and you best believe the local Italian restaurant would have a plate called the "Betty Spaghetti" lol
Penny Marshall insisted all the actresses actually know how to play ball, so there was no faking it. She had Rosie O'Donnell teach Madonna how to play, which helped them bond. They are still close friends today. I don't like sports or sports movies, so the only reason I saw this was because of Madonna's involvement. Smart casting choice that probably brought a lot of people like me to the theater, who might have otherwise ignored it. BTW re:station wagons...I just recently learned that Sarah Jessica Parker drives a 1976 Country Squire wagon! Seriously, only she could somehow make that seem cool!
I have two pieces of trivia for you: 1- That nasty bruise on Alice's leg from sliding into a base? (The one Jimmy takes a picture of.) That was real. The uniform didn't protect the actresses/players, so they did suffer that kind of injury. 2- The actress who played Betty Spaghetti is director Penny Marshall's real-life daughter. I guess Penny knew her daughter could cry on cue.
Ok HOLD THE PHONE.. first of all thank you for the bruise comment because I didn't know that was real until today . Wowsuhs. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I had NO IDEA that Tracy Reiner is Penny Marshall's daughter, OR that Penny Marshall was married to Rob Reiner!!! Even though there are a ton of movies that I haven't actually seen, I still usually know about them, Hollywood, and pop culture in general. So while I knew that Garry was Penny's brother for example, I just never realized that she was married to Rob Reiner. Thank you so much, Frederique!! You have blown my mind the most today haha
@@DavidvsFilm There are a couple other Marshalls in there, too! Garry's son, Scott, is the randy kid who drives Dottie to the Suds Bucket. Garry's daughter, Kathi, appears in a couple dugout/locker room scenes as one of the background-Peaches, "Mumbles Brockman" (she has no lines). She's standing next to Jimmy on the dugout steps when he beans Stillwell with the glove.
I got to be an extra in this movie. I was in the crows during the last play of the final game. It was a great time and has made me love this movie even more ever since,
Awesome reaction!! You might like the series. It's a lot of fun but also addresses some of the deep racial and LGBTQ issues of the time. I enjoyed it!⚾🏳🌈
@@jaydisqus3353 Yeah well that’s a shame because they managed to tell a really great and important story in a VERY entertaining 2 hours. Great job to all of them, but especially to Penny Marshall with her direction. I suspected those were the real players at the end :) Thank you!!
Gina Davis said that the first time they filmed a scene with her batting, she whiffed at every pitch they threw at her. Penny Marshall, standing behind the camera, eventually started pacing and smoking. Finally she had enough and shouted, "Hit the ball! Hit the ball! Put me out of my misery!"
You caught David ("Squiggy") Lander in the mix. You didn't notice Eddie ("Carmine Ragusa" AKA "The Big Ragoo") Mekka in the dance hall scene. He's the one Madonna was all over. A mini Laverne & Shirley reunion with Penny Marshall directing. And of course Penny's brother, Garry Marshall (creator of Happy Days), as Walter Harvey.
That's awesome! And you are right- I totally missed the Big Ragoo! I was probably distracted by either Madonna or the dancing, but who knows. I used to love watching reruns of that show. My mom told me that there was a special store where Laverne bought her clothes that only sold "L" apparel. I was a really gullible kid. lol
YAY!!! It's not a "sports" movie. We quote this movie so much: 3:45 "Well then, this would be more, wouldn't it?" 5:45 "See, how it works is, the train moves, not the station." 14:47 "And oops, my bosoms come flying out." 14:51 And this came out a little bit after Madonna's "S3X" coffee table book came out. lol 11:42 Carmine from Laverne & Shirley! (Eddie Mekka) 12:37 Sqiggy from Laverne & Shirley!
@@DavidvsFilm I was working in a bookstore when Madonna's book came out. It was all cellophaned closed so kids couldn't look through it. I'm not sure if there were many words in that book to read! Mostly photographs, I thought. lol But I do love that moment in the movie when Madonna is teaching her to read on the bus. :)
Haha that would be like something that would happen to me. Standing in line at Taco Bell or something after moving in and then hear someone say, "I can't wait to move out of this dump."
This movie spoke to me soooo much when it came out. Because I was the 'annoying little sister'. I was the one who never quite measured up to my brother. I was "Ben's sister", always. Some who's been his friends for years didn't even remember my name. I even heard my mother tell my aunt that everything my brother touched turned to gold and everything I touched turned to shit, because my brother was good at everything he did, he was charismatic and everyone loved him whereas I was unlucky, unruly and basically a brat. So, yeah, I was always in competition with him and he didn't even know it. That movie touched a core in my soul when it came out and I hated Dottie because of it
I like that we found more persons Kit, a lot of people dont like her, and I know she was was bad a times, but people try to down play the psychological traumas that some character had, she never had confidence on herself and she explain to Dottie in the beginning, she need to win to Dottie to free herself.
"There's no crying in baseball!!!" LOL! One of the BEST most memorable quote. Great reaction! 😊 One of my all-time top favorite Tom Hanks films. The whole cast is fantastic. Another great baseball movie is the 1984 "The Natural". And a great movie about the 1980 US Mens Olympic hockey team is the 2004 movie "Miracle". Wishing you and Marc a fun and safe 4th of July tomorrow. Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
Hey hey my friend!! Happy 4th to you as well! We're starting it off right with Chinese food tonight lol. We don't go full on 'Murica until the morning ;) I have heard of The Natural I believe (Robert Redford?) but never saw it. Someone else suggested Bad News Bears, and I'm interested in that one too.
Your reaction was perfection. You caught so many things I was hoping you'd catch. Yes, that was Tea Leoni! Ann Cusack was the Cusack you pointed out --she played Shirley Baker. Gotta love them Cusacks. The rest of what I would say regarding the things you noticed was addressed by other comments. 😊 Yes, this League existed. Storytime: A year or so after the movie came out, my dad and I were able to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY where they had a section dedicated to the actual women's league and a display was up for the movie. The photo taken of Dottie doing the splits to catch that foul ball was in that display as the cover of "Time" magazine. 😊 It was a big deal for me to see that in the 90s. Haven't been back since then, so I don't know if that section is still there. Another thing, you edited out the part where the black woman steps onto the field to throw the ball back to Ellen Sue....that character gets a huge storyline in the series (her and her friend is my favorite friendship). 😊 I think I wrote a book for a comment. Props to you if you read this far. I told you it was one of my favorites. I could probably still recite this movie word-for-word, line-by-line. I was actually challenged to a "A League of Their Own" trivia duel awhile back by my Computer Science professor. I creamed him. Ha! ❤
Thank you so much!! And HELL YEAH, I read all of your comments in their entirety- no words wasted ;) I love that about the trivia duel lol. And THANK YOU for mentioning the lady who steps out to throw the ball- I had her in then out about 6 times during editing because I was trying to include that scene. Ultimately I had to omit it because it was between that or Marla's wedding scene which came directly after, and I had already proclaimed my love for Marla. But I'm glad they gave her storyline a nice spinoff in the series!!
@DavidvsFilm Indeed. That scene with the ball being thrown back had been my favorite part of a movie since I saw it at 12 years old. I just knew it was important. It still may be my favorite because I don't know what would outrank it. Some people would roll their eyes at that since there's barely any dialogue and it only lasts a few seconds, but...yanno. Important. 😊 But, I understand your reasoning with including Marla's wedding--Megan Cavanaugh was fantastic in that movie!
@@mysam4504 Yes!! I will say that is one of, if not THE, most difficult thing about doing reaction videos- choosing the scenes, lines, etc, to keep or edit out. I wish I could leave everything in. :(
If I have this right, the woman that played Betty Spaghetti is Penny Marshall's daughter. I disagree that Dottie gave Kit the win, that would mean that Kit still was only second best and had to have Dottie hand her a freebee. Kit hit Dottie hard and made Dottie drop the ball.
Ahhhh so you really think she won it fair and square then? I mean, I would like to believe that because it would also mean that Dottie didn't sell out her teammates.
I've seen this movie a million times but just got curious about their pay. Using an inflation calculator their $75 a week is equivalent to $1,552 in 2023, so they would be making over $6k a month. For baseball season alone they would be getting paid roughly $43k.
Hey guys! Due to your EXCELLENT advice, I went back and watched the end credits and did a special Short reaction for it. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsEMJJJUNYYfc
It is a true story. My grandmother played for the league out of South Carolina as a hind catch.
That's so cool!!!
No way, that's awesome!!! I bet she had some great stories.
Pretty much every person has a real person or 2 they take direct inspiration from. Kelly Candaele, who co-wrote the film's story, drew inspiration from his mother and aunt. They were the first sisters in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League
Cool!!
How cool is that!?
Historic. Such a tear-jerk of an ending. The song Madonna sings "This used to be my playground" is one of my favorites. Yes, this is based on fact.
Thank you so much!! I need to go back and rewatch the entire credits scene.
@@ejtappan1802 I’M about to lose it just reading this!! Thank you for sharing ♥️
@@DavidvsFilmthe credits show all of the real women playing ball. It’s amazing!

7:15 The saddest bit of dialogue in this movie: "Honey, can you read?" 10:32 The inimitable Stilwell Angel!
That’s awesome!! Yeah it looks BEAUTIFUL up there.
I can’t even imagine with those uniforms. Ay yi yi
Rosie was already a very good softball player. I think she said that she was the only cast member who played before this film.
This my favorite Tom Hanks role, he nails it, the whole cast is amazing, what these women did was so badass and brave, Happy 4th David! 🎉❤
This is apparently Tom’s favourite film of his.
When I was a kid, I watched this movie SO many times! I wanted to be Gina Davis with all my heart! 😆❤️This movie was & still is iconic!
I think the "older versions" are the actual ball players. So glad you did this, it's one of my faves.
some of them, yes
They all show up at the end while the song plays.
Yesss!
Thanks!!
My daughter’s soccer team is the bad news bears of the soccer world..
Yup that was Squiggie! The actress who played Laverne directed this movie.
@@DavidvsFilm Oh yes, please
Thank you so much!! I love stories like these more than you know. So you DO definitely come from a sports family, sounds like!
"Let's make like a bread like a bread truck and haul buns..." I use that line to this day.
Bitty Schram who plays Evelyn “No crying in baseball” girl, is such an underrated actress. She plays such a soft, sweet and delicate girl here, but on Monk she plays one tough cookie!
I didn’t realize she was in the cast! Ahhh Monk is one of those shows whose reputation definitely precedes it. It’s long been in my list to check out.
Still one of my top fave movies. All the emotions and always warms my heart at the end.
Love love love this movie. Took me a while because I still bawl whenever Betty is notified, but now I think to myself at least she won't have to tell George that Jimmy destroyed his card.
OMG you kill me. Haha so true though.
I've only watched the intro so far. Had to pause to say I love your patter! "Let's grab our hymnals and turn to page 1992." Smart and sweet!
Thank you!! And thanks for watching the intro. I don’t think a lot of people do lol.
I love the intros and I so agree!! I think it’s smart and wholesome ❤❤
@@DavidvsFilmwe love it David!!
@@DavidvsFilm We watch it, David. And, we adore it. 😊
You guys!! Thank you. ♥️
Definitely one of my favorite films of all time! The cast is amazing and there are so many quotable lines
I loved it! And I really like that it's an "all-ages" movie that isn't hokey or lame, etc. Great for anyone.
Oh your in for a treat❤❤❤Love this Movie...Happy 4th
Happy 4th to you!! Such a great treat indeed 😁
"Open your Hymnals"...I like that. 😊
Haha thank you! I said that randomly one day a while back, and it just kinda stuck.
That's really great!! I love Penny Marshall in any capacity- actor, director. She was one of a kind.
Enjoyed the movie, but disagree on your Madonna take. It looked to me like she never swung a bat in her life. Easily, the best ballplayer/actress was Lori Petty. She could hit, field, throw, and run like the wind. She was terrific.
I've seen this movie sooooo many times, but I STILL cry at the end every single time.
I never know if I'm going to cry or not, and this one didn't end up getting me at the end. HOWEVER, I did almost cry at poor Shirley Baker. Ann Cusack's embarrassed, desperate expression and the way that Helen jumped up to help her about got to me.
Betty Spaghetti' actress Tracy Reiner is the daughter of A League of Their Own director Penny Marshall. Her father is director Rob Reiner.
David, my man! SO glad you're discovering this. You will find it ranks among the most rewatchable modern classics.
Thank you @OneThousandHomoDJs, yes!! You are right about that. For me the "rewatchability test" is if I actually look forward to editing the video. This movie was a delight to edit :)
@@DavidvsFilm Ha! Nice. That measure is brilliant in its simplicity.
I'm glad to see Bill Pullman get (keep) the girl, and I liked that they kept Jimmy and Dottie platonic.
Jon Lovitz is a fucking comedic genius he's just so hilarious
I’m still laughing at, “See how it works is, the train moves not the station.”
David, you are so funny. Since you're doing a Tom Hanks movie pee count, he also pees into the ocean in Cast Away. You're up to 3!!!
It is called "Pass the Ammo" from 1988.
P.S.
I loved watching League of Their Own with you today, I haven't watched it in ages. 🥰
This random movie recommendation brought to you by my reaction to your confusion between Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hey that's cool! Thanks for sharing this, Samantha :)
The real "all the way Mae" Maybelle Blair, was a lesbian who just recently passed away.
I recently learned that she came out at 94 or 95 (go girl!) but I didn't realize she had passed!! :( I'm so sorry to hear that.
Okay, now I'm just watching you're hallway!!😂
If you saw something, I would die. You would suddenly see a new background in future videos as my @ss would move lol
We love Marla!
You know it!
Any game related injury was real... Including the huge thigh/hip bruise. The actress really did slide into the base for that scene and came back with that nasty bruise!
Not only was Squiggy in the movie so was the big Ragu
LOVE THIS MOVIE! Everyone should see it
Agreed :)
Good job spotting Megan Cavanagh as Marla and Brunhilda in Men In Tights. She was in quite a few movies and did a lot of voice acting, mostly in Jimmy Neutron.
Thanks!! I didn't realize she did voice work for Jimmy Neutron!!! That's cool
@@DavidvsFilm apparently she voiced Judy Neutron. I'm a little too old to have watched the show but it's listed in her credits.
To me, The Natural is the best baseball movie, with this film a close second. The cinematography in The Natural is amazing.
Evelyn!!!
How much do I love that girl??? I don't remember seeing that actress in anything else, but she was hilarious.
@@DavidvsFilm She was in Monk. 😊
In the credits, those were actual players in the league
True story, the raspberry they take a picture of was an actually injury, not makeup.
That’s horrific
"Her teammates call her 'Betty Spaghetti.'" Be serious, sir. No one calls her that.
David perfect absolutely perfect I needed your reaction today and what a wonderful film can't wait 🔥💐💗🇺🇲
Aww that makes my day, Theresa, thank you!!
Was a true story but they did change a few things… instead of Mr Harvey “the candy bar king” it was Mr Wriggley of the Chiacgo Cubs… (who also made wriggleys gum)
Ok thank you for confirming that because I kind of figured that's who he was supposed to be "representing", but I wasn't sure :)
Great movie and reaction, enjoyed it!
Thank you- I agree!! I loved this movie :)
Great review (I haven’t seen this one either) lol! It looks good.
Oh yeah this one IS good. I think you’d like the full movie quite a bit.
New subscriber, I liked watching this movie with you! (I thought it was Geena Davis too.) Peace from Ohio … Ooh, I just saw you’re doing GOT. Yay.
Woohoo!!! Thank you so much :)
Besides this movie, my favorite sports films are "The Natural" w/ Robert Redford, "Hoosiers" w/ Gene Hackman and "Rudy" w/ Sean Astin. Have you seen any of these?
I saw Rudy, but not Natural or Hoosiers. I'm interested in both of those, actually :)
Where DID all the station wagons go!!??

Any Given Sunday is a hell of a good serious sports movie. Directed by Oliver Stone. Powerhouse cast.

The huge bruise u saw on one of the girls thigh is not make up , it's 100% real . She got it sliding into base.
Gotta respect that dedication. But I bet it was fun too. Thank you so much!!
"Except Madonna, she would never allow herself to age... accurately." The sass!
All in good fun, even if it is 100% accurate.. ;)
Yes, this is a true story. I am from Rockford but had no idea about the Peaches until this movie came out. So glad their story got told.
@DavidvsFilm They started making a big deal about it once the movie came out. (Those turism dollars add up, you know.)
@DavidvsFilm A Louisiana boy! Born and raised (and still reside) in Lafayette 😊
Another underrated classic.
Tom Hanks killed it
Yes I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. Entertaining from beginning to end. Really funny parts!
I have two pieces of trivia for you:
1- That nasty bruise on Alice's leg from sliding into a base? (The one Jimmy takes a picture of.) That was real. The uniform didn't protect the actresses/players, so they did suffer that kind of injury.
2- The actress who played Betty Spaghetti is director Penny Marshall's real-life daughter. I guess Penny knew her daughter could cry on cue.
I'm glad someone beat me to the bruise fact. Man, did that look painful!

We quote this movie so much: 3:45 "Well then, this would be more, wouldn't it?" 5:45 "See, how it works is, the train moves, not the station." 14:47 "And oops, my bosoms come flying out." 14:51 And this came out a little bit after Madonna's "S3X" coffee table book came out. lol
11:42 Carmine from Laverne & Shirley! (Eddie Mekka) 12:37 Sqiggy from Laverne & Shirley!
I was totally going to make a joke about Madonna teaching Shirley to read with her S3X book, but changed my mind LOL.
@@lynnhettrick7588 hahaha right?? More of a gynecological photography book.. ;)
"What? We just moved here!" 😂
Haha that would be like something that would happen to me.
One of my all-time top favorite Tom Hanks films.
We don't go full on 'Murica until the morning ;)
I have heard of The Natural I believe (Robert Redford?) but never saw it. Someone else suggested Bad News Bears, and I'm interested in that one too.
An all star game once ended in a tie. New york daily new headline was "there's no tying in baseball"
That is awesome lol. I actually love that.
Yes, this League existed.
I think I wrote a book for a comment.
Important. 😊
But, I understand your reasoning with including Marla's wedding--Megan Cavanaugh was fantastic in that movie!
@@mysam4504 Yes!! I will say that is one of, if not THE, most difficult thing about doing reaction videos- choosing the scenes, lines, etc, to keep or edit out. I wish I could leave everything in. :(
@@DavidvsFilm Understood. 😔
Look at you!! I'm so glad you did the math on this because I find this very interesting! Not bad for them :)
