Luke's black outfit that he wears in this movie is low-key the best fit in all of Star Wars. It's pretty subtle, but next time you watch the movie, pay attention to it and just admire how stylish he is.
I'm not making excuses but Han and Leia are probably played so weird because of the fact that Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were constantly partying and showing up drunk.
yea that was great dialogue. Only part where I semi-disagree with the video tho he does say it was interesting just doesnt agree with the way it was presented which i respect because the officer coming in like "blah blah blah" does immediately start the energy off very low
Honestly if they had used Wookies instead of Ewoks would made the movie a lot better. For christs sakes even without weapons those Wookies would be ripping storm troopers arms off.
I was so blind when i was 6 i thought the ewoks were the wookies. Then again my dad kept switching channels showing revenge of the sith and return of the jedi
Plus, you know that canonically, Kashyyk (and therefore the Wookies) was under the Empire's control, because it was a key world. Plus, the Empire enslaved the Wookies, so...
@@straighttothecore8131 Well but i think that was decided Well after the production of this Movie so they couldve Just taken wookies and i also Heard that wookies were Planned but to expensive.
Daniel Earl He pretty much was. From what I recall the actors were all tired by the time Jedi came around they just wanted this shit to be over with lol. (At least Harrison did).
The one thing I'll say in defense about the scene with Luke and Darth Vader on the bridge is that if they wanted to fight each other, they would have fought each other. I actually think that's one of the best moments in the movie. They gave the two characters a chance to actually breathe. I also think it was important for the Ark of Darth Vader that he didn't want the fight luke. You can feel that torment as he tries to suppress the good side creeping back in when faced with his son who is purposefully speaking calmly and gently to him, man to man. I think it's a good scene. It makes the fight scene later a bit more powerful because you know Vader doesn't want to do it.

Before watching this video Jedi was my favorite Star Wars film. After watching this Jedi is still my favorite Star Wars film, but you brought up some good points.
I agree i still love the movie and its still my favorite of all the star wars movies or second or maybe third(honestly i can’t decide which of the three originals is my favorite) but he did come up with some great points
The end battle and jabas palace save this film. Besides that his points really are true though. It just comes down to how much do you like the new fast paced lightsaber scenes because it does have the best lightsaber scenes in the trilogy
*starts throwing random shiz around and even though I am a master Jedi i miss almost every shot and the one shot i hit wasn't because of my accuracy* (Yoda's fight with Palpatine is the reference, when they were in the conference room.)
The one revelation that the Sci-Fi Universe article that hit me hardest came in the first item: "How intensely were the Ewoks marketed? Consider this: 'Ewok' is a household word, despite the fact that it’s never once spoken in the film."
Over confidence...like the USA in Vietnam. Or more exactly, like the leaders back home in America and their attitudes to the primitave Vietanmese. Luke even calls out Shive on this.
Bad things: 1) Boba Fett goes out like a punk. 2) Bad green screens. 3) Ewoks & child-friendly tone. Good things: 1) Best space battle of the OG trilogy. 2) Emotional conflict. 3) Lightsaber fights. 4) Amazingly satisfying ending.
Boba Fett is just a damn bounty hunter. Before the extended universe masturbated over him, he was just a guy who rode a dinosaur, tracked and delivered Han, then died in a fight, that's it.
@@AlejoConejo-vb8ln in the extended Canon, which is moot and has nothing to do with the events of the original trilogy. On those merits alone, Fett is just a guy with a cool outfit that gets merked as any other goon. Good riddance.
Also, well to be blunt, he and Lea hadn't had any alone time yet. Maybe he was worried the whole time if Little Solo was all the way out of the carbonite.
I recognize this movie has flaws and pacing issues galore but you're a damn liar If you say it doesnt wrap up Luke and Vader's character arcs PERFECTLY and deserves to be highly respected for that much.
Well, yeah... It's widely known to be the only redeeming quality of Jedi. Luke, Vader and Palpatine carried the whole damn movie on their backs while the others were just fuckin around.
ANH and Empire both had distinct beginnings, middles, ends. The Endor stuff seems to mix the middle and endings together. They should have had Coruscant be the end of the film as apparently originally intended. Look at Blade Runner, Cloud City in Empire, the Spacedock scenes in Star Trek 3, the space battle and death star run in Jedi. They could have done it and made it look reasonably good.
@@jaoh6659 I think they had already spent a record amount (at the time) on the budget. It's gotta be tons cheaper to just go out in the Redwood Forres than it would have been to build a convincing city set.
People complaining about bobas death baffle me. He was never really established to be some amazing cool guy at this point. He was just another random bounty hunter that people latched on to cause they thought his armour was cool. Since then we've got more stuff from the EU and shit. At the time boba was a nothing character. George himself has said he was just another minion. His death was kinda comical, so? Star wars fans really like 2 movies and think they love the franchise. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but nitpicks like bobas death are frustrating.
Okay, he was the one who tracked Han to Bespin. He was clearly not just a random character who had cool armor, he had skills above the other bounty hunters. He was also the only one who slowed Luke down at all on his rampage in the same movie. Top it all off with Star Wars fans being really into every minor character, and it's not surprising people were upset about his comedic death.
People like to say it's because of the armor but the bigger draw with boba fett is that he's the only henchman that threatens the main characters. He tracks the falcon down, captures han solo, and would've probably blasted luke in the hallway if he wasn't trying to lead him to vader (who up to that point personally killed no one that was actually fighting back). He's clearly more dangerous than the stormtroopers, and his death in jedi makes fans upset because any generic goon could have taken his place and it would've changed nothing. A good example of how he should've worked is karl in die hard (spoilers if you haven't seen die hard, which you should). He acts differently than the rest of the goons, has a bigger gun, and nearly kills mcclane many times while the other goons get shot to bits. It takes a long brawl scene where he's thashing bruce willis for most of it to ALMOST kill him, and even then he outlives the rest of the bad guys and is killed by another character to resolve his character arc.
Yes he was just a bounty hunter but he was also the coolest one and the only one that most people remember or know the name of and he had a jetpack. I think that's the problem we were just starting to think wow this is a really cool character and then instead of utilizing him in the third movie they just killed him in a pretty unspectacular way.
Honestly I come back to this video every now and again just for that rant lmao. "They're not f***** brass instruments so how are they making that noise?" lmfao
I loved this film, Marcus is a sack of crap filled with illogical persuasion of finding flaws when he doesn’t understand the point of the Boush or the fact that Empire establishes that force users can see the future. Considering Luke is strong with the force he was able to plan out the situation in Jabba’s Hutt. Marcus is a fanboy yet shits on the film’s setting. I think ROTJ is fine it’s a petty argument that broke my interest in Marcus’s opinions. Especially after him calling Prequel fans as idiots...
I actually had the pleasure of showing my parents Star Wars from the prequels to this film. They themselves are disappointed seeing number VII and saying “what’s the point, everything is wrapped up, there is a nice story of redemption and the emperor is dead.” I just left it like that, no need to hit my head on a wall while watching the sequels because it will make no sense to them. Also had you seen the 2D clone wars? I was surprised that Episode III references Anakin’s adventures in the outer rims. I did not expect that. Loved every prequel even episode I...
Eloi oh I had done so. We started from Ep1 and included even the cartoon stuff to Solo and Rogue One. Funny thing is that we watched Rogue One with A New Hope back to back so it actually felt really special doing so.
John Randall I haven’t seen the new ones yet but hearing the reception it’s positive. My only gripes is Ashoka being everywhere. I watched it when I was 8 but now 12 years later I always tried but simply can’t get with the show. It’s the most difficult show to get by...
"...there's actually a lot of paintings. But it's still really cool!" Matte paintings are one of my favorite "lost arts" from movie-making prior to the dominance of CG. I especially like the ones in the 1989 Batman.

What I like: •Vader’s redemption •Luke’s arch •Nien Nunb •The final battle in space •The animatronics •The sets •The editing and effects •The sound design •Mark Hamill’s preformance •Palpatine •Luke unmasking Vader (this is my favorite scene in the franchise) •Leia meeting Wicket for the first time. This was just hella adorable. I can’t explain why I love this scene. •Yoda’s death •The last scene •Vader’s funeral The shit I don’t like: •Harrison Ford’s performance •Boba Fett’s potential as a threatening force •The opening scene on the Death Star •The pacing •The length of Endor: I’m okay with the Ewoks but it should NOT take up all of Act II. It kills the pacing. • Death Star II So pretty good flick. Great conclusion to the most influential movie trilogy EVER. 8/10
William Eckerle It feels too slow. Granted it isn’t BAD, but the film is treating it as a bombastic opening with Vader’s theme blaring and his march, but nothing in reality is happening. Vader is just telling the moff that his little science project is tardy and papa Palps is coming Yea I know the emperor is a big deal but even before Vader announced the arrival the theme was BLARING
"I wasn't alive when Return of the Jedi came out" Well, I was - 11 years old - and let me tell you, that theater experience was beyond any other. I love RotJ.
i may not have as important of an input because im 15, but I personally love the prequels because that’s what i grew up on. Obviously the movies suck but the nostalgia for me keeps them
@@thearchivist250 we have a new standard now, however. i agree with you that rotj is better than any prequel, but that doesn't mean the prequels are the worst star wars there is. yes tpm is garbage except for the final duel, and aotc is very boring apart from a few awesome stuff with clones, but revenge of the sith pulled clutch with that trilogy and gave it the ability to still be reguarded somewhat well. i would not, however, say that the force awakens is better than revenge of the sith.
Return of the jedi is by far my favourite movie. Probably because of the difference between empire and rotj, Luke was so young a naive and in this one he's quite the force to be reckoned with. Him entering Jabbas palace the way he did was a clear sign of his growth between the films. Your opinion however cosmonaut, is valid.
I agree with most of your points but the scene of Luke and Vader meeting again and talking before meeting the emperor is one of my favorites in the original trilogy
Don’t forget the part where a highly advanced and tactical army of well trained soldiers with tools of death and destruction lost to midget bears with pointy wooden sticks and rocks Yea the Empire, reeeeal menacing when they can be beat up easy by reject care-bears
@William Robb there's a quote somewhere from Lucas that the Ewoks were supposed to be Wookies but the budget didn't allow for it i personally call bullshit but definitely something to think about
@theninjamaster67 I mean I can see the budget along with many different problems factoring into it: 1. Budget - Making costumes that large and fitting them, then also the makeup artists involved for 100+ people every day (for multiple days) will cost a lot. 2. Extras - Finding 100+ people that are 7ft tall (Chewbacca's height approx.) is not that easy either. I personally think wookiees would have been better, but personally I don't tend to mind a whole lot, considering there are meant to be thousands of them and they did capture the main cast at some point and they don't just serve as eye candy considering we see quite a few of them die.
Leia using the grenade was to show Jabba that, not only is her motivation for collecting a bounty, but to also solidify herself as a legitimate character of the underworld, by using a fierce negotiating tactic. Of COURSE if the grenade is set off, no one wins, but that's not the point. The point is to sacrifice a few teammates in order for everyone to escape together. It's impossible to rescue only one, so the plan was to fully infiltrate their criminal enterprise and rely on R2 being able to fire out Luke's lightsaber to him at the right time. Of course, this requires a lot of things to line up perfectly for Luke (which I'm not a fan of), but that is the point of the entire setup. It makes sense, but you have to exit your current state as a "UA-cam critic" and think from different perspectives. Also, not telling C3PO about the plan was a GOOD thing. C3PO is a blabbermouth. He can't keep secrets. He'd most likely give away the plan, which is why it was the safer risk to put him in that situation with R2 without knowing anything.
Lando had already infiltrated for weeks at that point lmao, at pretty much any point he could have unfrozen Han when nobody was there and walked out. The entire plan is absolutely ass-backwards stupid and NONE of it makes any sense. Keep in mind that Jabba and his people had to sit silently in the dark for, what, 7 hours? waiting for Leia to show up to free solo - of which they had no idea she was Leia or that her objective was to release Han or when she would do it. There's your different perspective lol, it's an incredibly idiotic scene. I appreciate that you're trying to apologize for it and find the good in it, but the bad/dumb/unbelievable FAR outweighs any good in it.
Personally, I think the dynamic between Luke and Vader, Vader’s redemption and the emperor was what made the movie. It makes up for the dumb and silly parts. I rank it number three after Empire and New Hope.
The object appearing in view of our sight is equal to and identical to that of something being intent in of halting our progress and thwarting our plans (it’s a trap)
I was 11 when it came out (like many others, I see!). I remember loving the experience, feeling like it was going by too quickly, wanting to savor every moment. But as we waited outside for my parents to pick us up and the crowd surrounding me was euphoric and talking about how cool it was, I felt for the first time in my life a distinct gap between what I was feeling and what they were expressing. It was disappointment, but it would take a long time for me to acknowledge it. Meanwhile, I bought the toys, books, tapes, and posters. There was enough to love about Return of the Jedi to forget that initial feeling and just keep on being a Star Wars fan. Then it came. I was in college when the February 1997 issue of Sci-Fi Universe magazine hit the stands. In big bold letters, the cover read, "FIFTY REASONS WHY WE HATE RETURN OF THE JEDI (and love Star Wars...). Reading it was cathartic. It was clever, genuine, and funny writing, obviously posited by people who really loved the franchise. My buddy and I would take turns reading it aloud to each other like a performance, it was so good. There was a side bar about all the ways Jedi was amazing, too. You hit a lot of the points covered in the essay, and I appreciated the deeper look and personal perspectives brought with this video. Clear, funny, informative, and - again - with an obvious love of Star Wars. Fun Asides: When the Special Edition came out, it was a thrill to see the ANH in the theater again. I relished watching the younger audience that was talking and joking through Empire get completely sucked into it and shut the F up. By the time Han got frozen, the entire theater was silent and learning into the screen, dumbfounded by how good it was. The same full audience laughed a lot through Return of the Jedi. The biggest unintentional laugh came when Vader said, "My son is with them. I have FELT him." I hadn't realized how suggestive that line was, but boy did the audience roar form it.
I remember when I finally had the Special Edition, I went to watch "Jedi" and the picture shrank down to a thin line on the screen. Horrors. Then at some point I discovered the Star Wars radio dramas, which were pretty good.
Honestly I like how Palpatine let's the rebels on to Endor, I think he was trying to give the rebellion a false sense of hope and then crush it. He actually does this a lot in the novels and comics, he's all about the mental mind games with him. So I personally like this part. Also Vader's obvious confusion is FREAKING hilarious. All Vader wants to do is kill, he wants to brutally take out everyone opposing him while Palpatine has patience and wants to get rid of the rebellion with one swipe. So yeah I actually like this part
Lando didn't really betray Han in so many words. He succeeded at both protecting the city and people he was responsible for, AND rescuing Han who he turned in to accomplish the first goal. He got to have his cake and eat it too.
*Starts describing how to improve the plot of a forty year old movie* Me: "No! Do NOT give George Lucas any more ideas! How many more edits must we endure?"
i think the main problem of this is that is a safe movie, with Empire they actually tried do something different and more ambitious, because there was no way the sequel to the Star wars was gonna flop so there was no risk, its the type of sequel that doesn't make the first movie again, its more mature, less predictable, amazing direction, there is no big battle at the end and stuff like that, and Jedi isn't any of that, its a step back, its even less mature than New hope, its kinda disappointing watching it with Empire lenses, George Lucas didn't learn ansolutely nothing with Empire, he just made the sequel to the first movie he made, because yea, this is a George Lucas movie in a nutshell.
@@leaffinite2001 yeah the novelizations were written from the unedited scripts. There is a lot of cool stuff in them. Stuff they should've left in. Would have made the movies make more sense
@@leaffinite2001 Idk, I got that as a kid. I didn’t need the backstory of the bounty hunter whos armor she stole. Jabba said “This bounty hunters my kind of scum.” She did it to get in with them, so that’s he could stay the night and steal back Han.
Boba Fett had like 3 lines in the previous movie. Why did everyone love him so much to be mad at his death? Oh right! They read all of these stories an comics and watched shows with him in it that weren't even made yet and the time of this movie.
I hate when condescending assholes try to speak for everyone. I didn't really care that Boba died either, but, I'm not an absolute fucking cunt to people that have their gripes.
"The Empire isn't making any big moves against the Rebellion". ... Did you miss the part where they were building a second Death Star? As a trap for the entire Rebel Fleet?
In the first two movies the empire is so much more powerful than the rebellion that the rebels have to hide from it. In the third movie the rebellion is strong enough to take on the empire. It would be nice if this was somehow explained. Maybe more people have joined them, or they've had time to build more and better ships.
Bro, the ground and space force we see in the movie is basically the entire Rebellion. We see their fleet floating in space in ESB and can deduce they have a sizeable ground force based on the battle of Hoth. They gambled everything on destroying the Death Star II which adds a bit of excitement to the plot.
@@lepopcornnaisseur546 Also worth noting that the majority of the imperial fleet was not in the system at the time. This was intentional to draw the Rebels in to Palpatine's trap, they would have been too suspicious if there was a sizeable imperial presence in the system. This is literally mentioned in the film. So yeah, the Empire was WAY more powerful than the Rebels, Palpatine was just a fool who got overconfident and too trusting of vague visions - the Rebels were never supposed to be able to get the shield generator down and would have easily lost if that were the case.
@@mattcorey8557 I think Lynch just happened to have a migraine that day and it just made Lucas' more wacky suggestions for ROTJ sound more off-putting to Lynch in the moment.

@@supercamdog1234 Are you serious? It was just revealed like 2 years ago in a book. He had no last name before. It was definitely not mentioned in any movies.
Vader: A small rebel force has penetrated the shield and landed on Endor. Palpatine: Yes, I know. Marcus: ????? How was that not a dead giveaway that the Empire was setting a trap for the Alliance?! In fact, that’s the entire explanation for why they stopped striking after Empire. They were setting a trap to draw out the rebels after they got away, so they could finally beat them. Too bad Palpatine underestimated his enemy’s strength.

@@turkepic3637 I'm sorry but there's not way a primitive teddy bear species of Ewoks should have been able to go toe to toe with even just a platoon of an advanced military (such as Storntroopers) without literally odds of 20 to 1, and with catastrophic casualties. I think if way more than just 1 teddy bear had died it might have been slightly more believable, and if we spent less time following them
That's why C3PO has his memory wiped in Episode 3. Which must be like resetting his programming because he is still fluent in six million forms of communication. I think when they did it because they did not want info leaked to the Empire if they got a hold of him. R2 D2 is more clever.
Why did they even bring him then? If he's liable to fuck the plan up whether he knows it or not it's probably a good idea to take him out of the equation completely.
I’ve always felt that about Han and Leiah that they feel different in this movie, I always assumed it was because Carrie was battling through bipolar depression while Harrison Ford didn’t want to be there because he only wanted to do two movies
I kinda felt that Leia had a lot of time to really think about how much Han had met to her. When she’s finally able embrace him again she let her self be vulnerable. Considering she must’ve spent the last few years thinking Han may be gone forever it would explain her character change. Han Solo just wasn’t given much to do in the film. His one thing that he does is blow up a control station. In the first two films he was such a vital character and although Luke was the main hero, he couldn’t have done it without Han.
The funny thing is, I love this one. I saw it when I was like 10 and loved every bit of it. The scenes in Jabbas Palace, the cute teddys fighting for their planet/moon and the epic fight at the end where luke nearly breaks. Seeing Lando flying the falcon was also kinda cool but I have to agree that building another Death Star and having more or less the same outcome than the first movie is kinda lazy.
It’s a great last act bar the endor battle which is a bit silly. And that last act is what we all remember and it makes us forgive the first two acts which are honestly fairly boring on repeated viewings
I'll posit that the reason you love it is because you were 10 when you saw it. I undeservedly like a number of mediocre movies because I saw them at an impressionable time.
I feel the opening of Return of the Jedi was successful, but I would make some changes to the rest of the film. I would change the plot from there to have Han and Leia follow a lead from Jabba’s Palace to Coruscant (kind of a WW2 French spy thriller vibe), and Han, Chewbacca, and Leia discover a method to use Spice routes to smuggle rebel troops past the Imperial fleet to storm the Imperial Palace. Blade Runner was released in 1982 so the effects were possible for Coruscant. Luke is now a symbol of hope for the galaxy, meaning he will bring the return of the jedi order and peace to the galaxy. The rebel troops inspire the Coruscantians to rise up (maybe there are Wookies that were inspired by Chewbacca, which helps turn the tide). Lando and a new character (maybe someone that infiltrated Jabba’s Palace with him so they have a rapport) would follow a similar path to the actual movie leading the space attack against the Imperial fleet, but the attack on the fleet is a smoke screen to distract the actual goal of sneaking in the ground troops to the surface; Lando could have subplot about convincing the rebel fleet on a suicide mission that functions as a distraction. Luke would similarly follow a similar path to the actual movie, but I would have had Luke be training Leia in the Force between movies (it’s clear in Empire Strikes Back that she can use The Force so why not have that training occur off screen or in an early scene…maybe Leia uses the Force during the Jabba mission). I would also not make Leia and Luke related; the scene where Luke snaps when Vader says “If you will not turn, maybe she will…” still works, especially if Leia is on the planet at the time. Luke would still confront the Emperor, but it would occur at the Imperial Palace. There would be additional tension because Luke falling to the Emperor’s side would snuff out the new hope that he has provided to the people of the galaxy. The rebels are successful with taking the palace and there is a celebration to the end of the civil war. Maybe Han dies so Harrison Ford can have his dream fulfilled. The end.
@@choccake3057 read expended canon. his armor was salvaged by jawas and used by someone else. and Temuera Morrison is too old for Boba Fett in the TM Era.
Sergeant Cyro expended is the wrong word, Expanded Canon is also wrong, you’re talking about... well nothing, I guess you were just making stuff up. In Legends he escaped the Sarlaac pit through use of his arsenal and Mandalorian armor and while he was captured by Jawas afterward, they mistook him for an unintelligent being and only restrained him, and the bounty hunter escaped later, in canon, he is still being digested while alive or he gave in to the pain of the Sarlaac’s neurotoxins and died, and due to that specific Sarlaac’s continued wellbeing in canon, it would be impossible for a salvage anyway. The Emperor “foreseeing” things (or his failure to do so) is one of the themes of the film. Yoda in ESB preaches the folly of looking away to the future. (One of the ironic inversions in the prequels, where Yoda and the Jedi are all about prophecy and future-seeing, except for Quite-Gon- who tells Obi-Wan to cut that out.) 6-film moral: Keep your mind on what you’re doing right NOW, or you’re going to have a bad time.
Multiverse I think that Yoda’s opinion has changed because of those times. He’s developed and learned from his experience. There was a comic not too long ago about how Yoda blamed himself for being to caught in the future to focus on the present and the evil approaching. Which causes him to exile himself like he does. It’s really a sad moment. But overall It’s a nice little arch that Yoda goes through.
"Skywalker, still looking to the horizon. You are here, NOW, the need in front of your nose!" All of Star Wars truly is about the decisions we make now, whether redeeming ourselves for our mistakes or trying to better ourselves and those around us. Great lessons.
That's definitely possible and Imma use that from now on lmao, but tbh I feel like it's also possible that Palpatine just had some inconsistencies and happened to align with that theme lol
I always thought the original 3 were perfect, but now coming back to this movie it's clear why I've never watched this movie since the first time. I've watched revenge of the sith probably 100 times not because it's good but because it's really fun and not boring like this movie.
Albert The Peacock a lot of people have been hating on Return of the Jedi recently, people just change their minds over time and it happens very often, this movie is my favorite Star Wars movie and it might be my favorite movie ever so it kinda sucks to see people saying it’s worse than revenge of the sith
I always thought Luke's plan did fail: he really did give up the droids -- maybe he planned on rescuing them after bargaining with Jabba. So then he sent Leia in, and she got captured. So then he went in to fix stuff. I didn't get that he had planned on the skiff fight scene, only that he and his pals knew generally what they'd need to do. I never thought his plan was what we saw. Instead, we saw a bunch of plans failing. First plan was to bargain with Jabba.
That was my understanding as well. The plan was to bargain with Jabba. If that failed, send Leia and Chewie to infiltrate and try to sneak Han out. If THAT failed, Luke would go in himself. But he knew if that didn’t work, he needed R2 and Lando to be there (which is why Lando was undercover as one of Jabba’s guards) to help fight them out.
In hindsight, the plan could've been streamlined as such: Step 1: Have Lando infiltrate Jabba's guards to confirm Han is at the palace. Step 2: Have Leia, disguised as a bounty hunter, "capture" Chewbacca and C-3PO. The latter would serve as a translator for Leia. Step 3: After Jabba's party, Leia would thaw Han from the carbonite, Lando get Chewie from his cell and they all leave. Step 4: On the off chance step 3 fails, which it does, Luke comes himself with R2 and demands Jabba surrenders. When he refuses then you get the fight at Jabba's Palace with Luke distracting everyone by fighting the Rancor. R2 breaks Leia's chains, she kills Jabba and everyone bails since she also activates the Thermal Detonator to blow up the palace. Side notes: This would, for better or worse, cut the fight over the Sarlacc Pit and allow Boba to join the fight on Endor on the Empire's side, giving Han and the others more to do.
You neglect the fact that he sent in the droids with his lightsaber stowed away in R2. That means he would have lost his lightsaber if Jaba had accepted them as offerings and would have had to retrieve it or give it up.
I think his plan was to send in as many infiltrators as possible, and while he was negotiating (I.e. distracting) jabba, Leia would sneak Han out, and luke and co would follow them, violently if need be. Leia unfreezing han at night and the battle of the skiff then being improvisations to recover from the plan not working out.
Have you seen Genndy Tartrokoski's (I spelled that so poorly) Clone Wars microseries from 2003? It's one of my favorite Star Wars things ever and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
NotoriousBusinessMan True, but he already made a great video on that. I love both, but I never hear *anyone* talk about the 2003 series anymore, and I think it deserves more recognition.
Yoda dying might be the only true moment where I actually felt true emotion in a Star Wars movie. I loved every moment with luke, vader, and the emperor, imo the best star wars scenes. And also how when Luke gets his lightsaber and just says fuck jedi technique and swings it a baseball bat and destroys everybody. For me, I lean towards the good usually outweighs the negatives if it's equal. I definitely liked this movie. It's the only one to be fun, while having a serious tone and balance it perfectly.
UltimateUchiha2K that was no where near emotional. Besides yoga and mace, we didn't really get to know any Jedi who were killed. It's basically just a bunch of faces being killed off, not as investing.

Besides, order 66 was not just the fall of the Jedi, it was the fall of Anakin. You see him attack the temple--his home. He killed children. The Jedi, who symbolize hope, peace, order, abd Justice, died. The light in the dark galaxy was snuffed out. On top of John Williams brilliant score, it was probably the most emotional moment in star wars history. One last thing. Yoda disappeared. The last time we saw that, the guy who disappeared came back as a ghost. Everyone knew that Yoda would become one too. The Jedi in order 66 didn't. That was the sad truth of moment. Order 66 was far more emotional than Yoda's "death"
despite all the reasons you gave. this movie is still my favorite. The final Ground battle on Endor, Luke vs Vader, the Space battle, it was all perfect. I can't find any reason to dislike this movie. Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith are Unapologetically my favorite Star Wars movies.
"despite all the reasons you gave. this movie is still my favourite." Yeah. Because all cinema sins type of videos don't make sense. The story either works or it doesn't, the message is either profound or unworthy to stand behind. And little things cannot change that. That's the greatness of Return of the Jedi.
I love how he can point out flaws in this favorite of many Star Wars fans. The whole opening sequence with jabba and how it doesn’t work. And yet The Last Jedi is better than this in his opinion? Hahaha NO just NO. None of these problems in ROTJ ruined the trilogy as a whole. TLJ killed a trilogy on the second film. I can get behind some of his critical analysis but to claim this isn’t Star Wars at the end for ROTJ he’s ignoring a lot of glaring flaws in TLJ. Very inconsistent criticisms. I’m starting to notice this a lot about this guy. Still enjoy his videos but very inconsistent.
@@namesaretuff Delivering C3PO to Jabba with a restraining bolt is as good as *broadcasting* that the droid is likely hiding something he doesn't want to get out. Jabba would have it removed immedeately and goldenrod would spill the beans. That's not a chance Luke would've been willing to take, I know *I* wouldn't.
I appreciate this video, btw! It feels like many people are afraid to even critizise the original trilogy, almost viewing it like it's holy and that it's got no flaws and whoever says anything differently is shunned and disliked. Nothing has no flaws! It's good to see people express their opinions, challenging the pre-existing Star Wars norms. Though, judging by the like/dislike ratio at the time of making this comment, it's evident that not everyone feels this way.
To me, the Empire Strikes Back, after watching Return of the Jedi, was just awkward seeing Luke and Leia kiss, not knowing they were actually brothers and sisters. So yeah, there's that.
Actually, this is probably my favorite Star Wars movie. Yes, the beginning setup is awkward. And yes, the Ewoks are pretty terrible (although they're not without purpose, as I discuss below). But you have to look at it from the perspective of someone who was watching it in 1983 and didn't know how it was going to end. The whole excitement from it is that you know that final battle between Luke and Vader is coming. Return of the Jedi had a lot more setup to do because of Han being captured. I don't think that was handled particularly well, but I understand why Luke wouldn't want to fight Jabba in his lair. There's no element of surprise there. The Ewoks aren't that annoying once you understand the reason for them being there. This was 1983, not that far removed from the Vietnam War. The Ewok battle is in there to show an indigenous people fighting against a more technologically advanced force. Also, there's a reason Luke doesn't go in on Vader with his light saber blazing. He doesn't *want* to kill Vader. He wants to turn him (like Rey wanted to turn Kylo). In 1983, audiences went in not knowing if Luke was going to have to kill Vader. He was being told that he had to defeat Vader by Obi Wan and Yoda, but he is also afraid to fall to the dark side. It's this central conflict that fuels the movie. Luke whaling on Vader in the beginning is him starting to be tempted by the dark side, and he just barely pulls himself back. The movie does, obviously, have its flaws. But what keeps it from being boring is that you know that battle is coming at the end, and the danger increases the closer Luke gets to it.
I always thought the Han rescue was just like repeated attempts after each previous one fails. And the nod is just like, "Well, uh I guess we are left with the nuclear option, fucking shit up Jedi style." The only thing he'd have to plan is having the lightsaber hidden, which isn't nuts. If years of D&D have taught me anything, people make wacky plans that get progressively wackier as they screw up.
I personally always felt that the whole first act was intended to build tension for the execution scene, and Luke backflipping and grabbing the green lightsaber to heroic music is the most perfect payoff I’ve ever seen on film, at least to me. AND I love that the final confrontation with the Emperor and Darth Vader is so psicological... In short, if you take Endor out and replace with... basically anything... this movie would be just as good as the other two to me. Slower paced, sure, but great all the same.
501 212 I think it was a directing issue, because that bland/wooden acting is all over the prequels, and Luke suffers from that in ROTJ too (I’m sorry, but Luke was SO boring in this film. Wise =/= bland, Obi-Wan was wise but still had personality
I have to: Yes, Return of the Jedi might be the weakest of the three. But many of your points aren't thought through. Let me unpack this for you: Yes, Han Solo's role seemed pretty unnecassary, but that was because his role was originally cut and just later added. Apart from that I'd like to think that Luke, Leia, Lando and all the others changed so much in the year between V and VI, Han was just a bit thrown off by their sudden competence. Remember, they all grew in the meantime, he was frozen in carbonite. *Jabba's Palace:* It is actually a great scene, it ends Han's arc with him owing money to Jabba. And Luke's plan actually makes sense. He didn't tell C-3PO any details for the obvious reason that 3PO is a naive coward who would have spilled the beans by accident. That is made clear because R2, the more clever one of the two, was involved in the plan. He's got Luke's lightsaber. But no, Luke didn't plan out exactly everything. He didn't plan to fight the Rancor and then go to the Sarlacc pit. He gave R2 his lightsaber to make sure there is a plan B. When he nodds to Lando, that obviously is the plan B. Look at how serious and pumped Leia looks when Luke is on the plank. She knows shit is about to get real. *The Ewoks:* Yes, the original idea to have Wookies instead of Ewoks would have been cooler. But agaim, you underestimate Luke's character. He joined the group and travels to Endor. He senses Vader on the ship and gets this feeling that something is happening. He doesn't quite know what, he wonders wether he should have come or not. The speeder chase happens and they all end up at the Ewok village. And then, when they all sit around the fire and 3PO tells them, they have become part of the tribe and the Ewok's will help them there is one shot of Luke standing at the door and having this look that says "Ohhh, so that was the reason why I came here. Now I can leave and confront my father" and that is exactly what he does. *Vader meets Luke:* You might find it boring and off hoe they interact with each other after the confrontation on Bespin. But it is sooo subtle. The look they give each other for the first time. One can just imagine what is going on in their minds at that moment. They way Luke speaks is very reserved and serious. He pushes his own confidence and when Vader activates his lightsaber behind his back it is so unsettling. Both of them must have gone through that conversation hundrets of times. This moment means much more that you think *The space battle:* No idea how you can dislike that, it's awesome *The second Death Star:* Sure, one could argue that it is just a rehash to have a second Death Star. But think about it, it just makes sense. The impirial power depends on it. The impirial senate was given up in favour of a weapon of fear to "Keep the local systems in line". They needed that Death Star as an instrument to keep the galaxy under their control. It's a tool a fear. *The duel:* Again, you argue nothing much happens, the fight is short and not really action packed. But this is exactly the poinz, it's not about the duel itself, it's about what it means. In the end it is all about Luke winning and deciding to spare his father. The real conflict - Luke even says that - is the conflict within. He doesn't give into his hate, he spares his fathers life and decides to die instead of joining the Emperor. Return of the Jedi might not be the best of the trilogy but it got it where it counts, kid. You underastimate it very much.
@devil-haha said it right my friend...I cannot dispute some of the problems I. The movie that we're touched upon, however I'm fine with looking past them since I appreciate the very elements of the plot you just described here...and I'm a hardcore ESB fan lol
Your whole counter argument is just re-narrating the movie. The Evoks scenes last much to long and are in fact BORING. Han character being cut and being readded later is not an excuse. The performance and dialogs were bad. Star Wars is a movie that tries to impress the viewers and the last fight with Vader was dull and lame as fuck. The reunion between Vader and Luke was rushed. This whole movie was an embarrassment to the franchise. Sometimes you gotta look past the nostalgia...
XXX1 XXX2 Man some people don't get star wars and critique it like they understand all the themes and meanings. First off your personal interest in the ewoks and their scenes is irrelevant, If you find them boring great, Not everyone does, And they do infact, Add a lot to the plot ( I will concede that it did feel like they pushed them a bit to far though and they became a slight toy commercial, But they did still add to the plot) Hans character being readded and ending his story are fine, I don't even get why it would be a problem that he's not a huge part of the movie, He wasn't meant to be and thats clear, It's lukes story now. The performances and dialog is bad, Ok this is a subjective point again, Your opinion on the acting is irrelevant, Most people found it to be fine. I'll ask what dialog or moments in the performances you found bad because i'm curious though And again the Luke and Vader fight is a bit subjective, But saying "it's lame" because their isn't much action? I'm sorry but you've completely missed the point, Star wars is not about light sabers, It's about the characters conflict and the lightsaber fights are ways of showing that conflict in a visual way. To say Return of the jedi is an embarrassment to star wars when we have movies like Rouge One and the entire prequel trilogy is absurd to me, I can't even understand that part of what your saying
I saw Return Of The Jedi when it came out . I was 6. I really loved it. Although when I saw Star Wars and then Empire Strikes back (Return OF The Jedi was the first Star Wars movie that I saw) I preffered those first 2 more. Still I really like that 1982-1985 movie feel. E.T.,Dark Crystal,Back To The Future, Goonies, Temple Of Doom, Ghostbusters, Starman, and others from that time...they are all very different films but they all have some sort of similar something about them that I really enjoy...maybe it was the mood of the time plus the filming technology. But I love Return Of The Jedi!
I like it for that reason as well, just like it though, does have a good atmosphere reminiscent of early 80's film making. But the film itself is far from perfect.
I love ROTJ for Wedge’s part the most. He’s finally shown in film leading the entire squadron and helps blow up the second Death Star without a sweat like a badass.
7:25 That’s because he was too focused on killing Luke and didn’t sense Vader turning on him. That’s also the reason why Mace Windu didn’t sense Anakin’s betrayal
Tbh the force is rlly poorly explained in the films. Many battles can be completely ended with them just force choking or graabing each other but they don't, and an explanation is never given in the films so alot.of.ppl start nitpicking the fights and things like how come palpatine never sensed Vader's betrayal

He's far from the first person to say that ROTJ is the weakest of the OT, although most fans wouldn't go nearly as far as saying "it sucks" outright. Regardless, the weakest of the OT is still better than 95% of everything else, imo.
Austin Trousdale I’ve been trying to talk to star wars fans see what they actually think of the original trilogy and how it has faults no one every really talks about.
General Kong Hahahahah! Are you fucking kidding me. Revenge is not a masterpiece it has many flaws. It’s so overrated. How come Star Wars fans are bunch of dumbasses now! Why do you ppl like Revenge so fucking much it’s really not that good at all.
It was originally going to be Wookies, but George thought that by ROTJ, he had already established them as a technologically advanced species and one of the themes he wanted to explore was a primitive species fighting the evil Empire, and so the Ewoks were born.
The dialogue was alright, the Endor could've been much better, but it's fine just the way it is. Just. Like. The Prequels. The revealing of Luke and Leia being siblings, I'll admit, *was* pretty awkward, but Darth Vader vs Luke was just the best Saber fight. Ranked 2 next to Darth Vader vs Obi Wan in Revenge of the Sith for me! But I understand your opinion.
@@3Rayfire I don't think you're seeing it from a proper point of view. Think of the huge weight of the head of the walker falling from it's height. That's what would damage it. Not the logs.
I agree, Han Solo is really boring in Return Of The Jedi, which was a bummer. I really liked him a lot in Empire Strikes Back. In fact, he’s my favorite character in that movie. His cockiness as the scoundrel was much more alive especially when he interacts with Leia. But in ROTJ? Yeah, he just... he was just off, really. I still love ROTJ though and that’s because I’m not a true Star Wars fan; I’m a die-hard Star Wars fan lol.
Harrison Ford's performace kinda sucked because Ford hated his job and just wanted his character to die. His heart just wasn't in it. The intent wasn't that bad with the ewoks (apart from selling toys I mean) to show the empire troops could be overthrown with knowledge from nature and strategy etc, it also worked as a parallel with Vietnam but it would've worked ten times better if those were wookies instead. It's just that it was poorly set up and too ridiculous. I agree with Han's development which could've been handled way better Apart from that, those Jabba and Luke/Vader/Emperor parts were great

After what they did to him in TBOBF, I'd be content with Boba's death in ROTJ
It takes a long brawl scene where he's thashing bruce willis for most of it to ALMOST kill him, and even then he outlives the rest of the bad guys and is killed by another character to resolve his character arc.
what 2 movies are you talking about? youre talking about a New hope and peoples obsession with the empire strikes back?
Yes he was just a bounty hunter but he was also the coolest one and the only one that most people remember or know the name of and he had a jetpack. Geralt of Trivia ok, 1. just because someone makes a good thing doesn’t mean everything they make is good. 2. rian johnson only directed that episode. he didn’t write it.
Geralt of Trivia do you like the prequels?

•The final battle in space
•The animatronics
•The sets
•The editing and effects
•The sound design
•Mark Hamill’s preformance
•Palpatine
•Luke unmasking Vader (this is my favorite scene in the franchise)
•Leia meeting Wicket for the first time. This was just hella adorable. I can’t explain why I love this scene.
•Yoda’s death
•The last scene
•Vader’s funeral
The shit I don’t like:
•Harrison Ford’s performance
•Boba Fett’s potential as a threatening force
•The opening scene on the Death Star
•The pacing
•The length of Endor: I’m okay with the Ewoks but it should NOT take up all of Act II. It kills the pacing.
• Death Star II
So pretty good flick. Great conclusion to the most influential movie trilogy EVER. 8/10

William Eckerle
It feels too slow. Granted it isn’t BAD, but the film is treating it as a bombastic opening with Vader’s theme blaring and his march, but nothing in reality is happening. Vader is just telling the moff that his little science project is tardy and papa Palps is coming

@Tronam This is correct. It is still so much better than the prequels. Only Force Awakens or Rogue One are similar or superior. Depends on taste.
i may not have as important of an input because im 15, but I personally love the prequels because that’s what i grew up on. Obviously the movies suck but the nostalgia for me keeps them
valid

I like the Ewoks.
@William Robb there's a quote somewhere from Lucas that the Ewoks were supposed to be Wookies but the budget didn't allow for it i personally call bullshit but definitely something to think about
@theninjamaster67 I mean I can see the budget along with many different problems factoring into it:
@@kartrix1 well you wouldn't need to do make-up for em but yah the costumes would be hard also fairly sure Chewbacca's actor used stilts

Fun Asides:
When the Special Edition came out, it was a thrill to see the ANH in the theater again.
So yeah I actually like this part

i think the main problem of this is that is a safe movie, with Empire they actually tried do something different and more ambitious, because there was no way the sequel to the Star wars was gonna flop so there was no risk, its the type of sequel that doesn't make the first movie again, its more mature, less predictable, amazing direction, there is no big battle at the end and stuff like that, and Jedi isn't any of that, its a step back, its even less mature than New hope, its kinda disappointing watching it with Empire lenses, George Lucas didn't learn ansolutely nothing with Empire, he just made the sequel to the first movie he made, because yea, this is a George Lucas movie in a nutshell.

Han Solo just wasn’t given much to do in the film. His one thing that he does is blow up a control station. In the first two films he was such a vital character and although Luke was the main hero, he couldn’t have done it without Han.

The scenes in Jabbas Palace, the cute teddys fighting for their planet/moon and the epic fight at the end where luke nearly breaks. It’s a great last act bar the endor battle which is a bit silly. And that last act is what we all remember and it makes us forgive the first two acts which are honestly fairly boring on repeated viewings
@@davidgeisler9885 I love the whole Jabba part tho
The end.
The other stuff is fluff the real story is between luke vader and palpatine and its fantastic

In hindsight, the plan could've been streamlined as such:
Step 1: Have Lando infiltrate Jabba's guards to confirm Han is at the palace.
In the end the first act was just dumb but hey... Action!!!

Have you seen Genndy Tartrokoski's (I spelled that so poorly) Clone Wars microseries from 2003? It's one of my favorite Star Wars things ever and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
NotoriousBusinessMan
True, but he already made a great video on that. I love both, but I never hear *anyone* talk about the 2003 series anymore, and I think it deserves more recognition.
J Grandmaster - That series was my first introduction to Star Wars. Then I found old VHS tapes of the original trilogy when I visited my Uncle in '04.
I like that show very much and one day may make a video on it. - Marcus
J Grandmaster Why? he'll bash &hate on that too.
That's the series that completely revived my interest in Star Wars.
10,000 Subscribers without Videos no emotion when Luke fought Vader in the throne room?
Vlad II Dracul not the same type of emotion. I was close to tears the first time I saw that part, and it's crazy that it's from a puppet lol.
10,000 Subscribers without Videos have you seen order 66?
UltimateUchiha2K that was no where near emotional. Besides yoga and mace, we didn't really get to know any Jedi who were killed. It's basically just a bunch of faces being killed off, not as investing.
10,000 Subscribers without Videos just because you don't know a character, doesn't mean that there is no emotion behind their death.
I dont think Rotj sucks, but its definitely the weakest of the original trilogy.
"Rotj" 😂?

DA VIEWZ Fuck outta sw fanbase nigga.
despite all the reasons you gave. this movie is still my favorite. The final Ground battle on Endor, Luke vs Vader, the Space battle, it was all perfect. I can't find any reason to dislike this movie. Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith are Unapologetically my favorite Star Wars movies.
Those 2 are the “most” Star Wars movies…. not the best.
"despite all the reasons you gave. this movie is still my favourite."
Yeah. Because all cinema sins type of videos don't make sense. The story either works or it doesn't, the message is either profound or unworthy to stand behind. And little things cannot change that. That's the greatness of Return of the Jedi.
"Why wouldn't he tell C3PO the plan?" Because 3PO is a tattletale and he'd spill the whole thing under the slightest bit of pressure. xD
Natya Rudh restraining bolt
Natya Rudh Oh right
I appreciate this video, btw!
Nothing has no flaws? Have you ever seen Empire Strikes Back, Robocop, No Country for Old Men, Goodfellas, or Fargo?
To me, the Empire Strikes Back, after watching Return of the Jedi, was just awkward seeing Luke and Leia kiss, not knowing they were actually brothers and sisters. So yeah, there's that.
Well, they were not meant to be siblings. But we now know what happened in Ep.6. I mean, you can fast forward the two scenes like I do...
"Nothing has no flaws" "Return of the Jedi sucks: Why it sucks" two different views
that is practically the same view.
The ewoks cant be compared to the Vietnam war lmao, the empire troops barely even affected their enviroment and didnt bother them at all
@@s66s46 that’s actually the whole point of ewoks, George Lucas himself said that
@@MarcoP1919 well, not good for the final movie, at least
ROTJ is my second favorite Star Wars movie but ROTS is better in my opinion
@@Duckduck8000 I do like revenge of the sith but ROTJ is better for me. ROTS only gets interesting roughly halfway through
I always thought the Han rescue was just like repeated attempts after each previous one fails.
Gustavo Medeiros anything except jar jar or the casino scene on ep 8 xD
Gustavo Medeiros Then legends ruined it with the palpi clones.
Gustavo Medeiros But why didn't R2 get that chip put on him? If he did luke would be dead.
Marcus' "THIS ISN"T STAR WARS!" rant at the end had me absolutely tearing up XD
I think I have heard that sentence like thousand times from everyone about every movie which isn't ANH or ESB
His name is Marcus?
I always thought of him as: 'The Cosmanaut Quickie.'
It had me laughing at hilariously triggered he sounds, lol!
I think Carrie Fisher was High when she did that scene with Luke on Endor in the Ewok Village
Galifreyfallsnomore 2004 i think so too. sadly i heard that se had a drug problem at the time.
501 212 I think it was a directing issue, because that bland/wooden acting is all over the prequels, and Luke suffers from that in ROTJ too (I’m sorry, but Luke was SO boring in this film. Wise =/= bland, Obi-Wan was wise but still had personality
She was high for every scene in this movie, and half of Empire.
Every performance in this movie feels weird, like they were acting for TV.
Let's be honest, who wouldn't be high when working on Star Wars?
“Boba fett is dead as fuck”.
*4 years later*. He’s back Like a bantha
😂
I have to:
Yes, Return of the Jedi might be the weakest of the three. But many of your points aren't thought through. Let me unpack this for you:
Yes, Han Solo's role seemed pretty unnecassary, but that was because his role was originally cut and just later added. Apart from that I'd like to think that Luke, Leia, Lando and all the others changed so much in the year between V and VI, Han was just a bit thrown off by their sudden competence. Remember, they all grew in the meantime, he was frozen in carbonite.
*Jabba's Palace:*
It is actually a great scene, it ends Han's arc with him owing money to Jabba.
*The Ewoks:*
Yes, the original idea to have Wookies instead of Ewoks would have been cooler.
*Vader meets Luke:*
You might find it boring and off hoe they interact with each other after the confrontation on Bespin. This moment means much more that you think
*The space battle:*
No idea how you can dislike that, it's awesome
*The second Death Star:*
Sure, one could argue that it is just a rehash to have a second Death Star. But think about it, it just makes sense. The impirial power depends on it. The impirial senate was given up in favour of a weapon of fear to "Keep the local systems in line". They needed that Death Star as an instrument to keep the galaxy under their control. It's a tool a fear.
*The duel:*
Again, you argue nothing much happens, the fight is short and not really action packed.
Just wanted to say 'Thank you!' . And no, that is not sarcasm.
First off your personal interest in the ewoks and their scenes is irrelevant, If you find them boring great, Not everyone does, And they do infact, Add a lot to the plot ( I will concede that it did feel like they pushed them a bit to far though and they became a slight toy commercial, But they did still add to the plot)
Hans character being readded and ending his story are fine, I don't even get why it would be a problem that he's not a huge part of the movie, He wasn't meant to be and thats clear, It's lukes story now.
The performances and dialog is bad, Ok this is a subjective point again, Your opinion on the acting is irrelevant, Most people found it to be fine. I'll ask what dialog or moments in the performances you found bad because i'm curious though
And again the Luke and Vader fight is a bit subjective, But saying "it's lame" because their isn't much action?

I love Return Of The Jedi too but I also love it prequel THE CLONE WARS
That's fine. Nobody is perfect.
Also Vader is very powerful and could probably conceal his feelings to an extent
That is a shit excuse tbh... One of the most Powerful beings in the universe who can also apparently see into the future was "Distracted" yeah ok bud... 😐

Yeah, but I just wished that instead of Ewoks we got to see the Wookies. However, the wookies in Revenge of the Sith weren't so bad either.
It was originally going to be Wookies, but George thought that by ROTJ, he had already established them as a technologically advanced species and one of the themes he wanted to explore was a primitive species fighting the evil Empire, and so the Ewoks were born.
Awake Now episode 3 was the best
