      Mr. weasel
Well for one the idea that the "toxic left" makes shit up to make the right look bad is a complete lack of understanding of your opponent's arguments in an attempt of denial.
Secondly you are using leftist and toxicity pretty loosely. I'm pretty sure lots of people you are calling leftist are barely even that but you are calling them that because they said something you hate.
Thirdly, you aren't pointing to anybody directly. Because you know as soon as you do you'll get you ass laughed off to oblivion. So you stick to pointing indirectly to a vague shadowy concept that people can fill in with whoever they don't like.
Also NPC is a term unaware of its own irony. It demonstrates you are only here to call people names and spew bs. That or waste people's time with "jokes."

Interesting, as a band nerd who is attempting to get a music degree I don't really see any of this, even for solo juries. I'm wondering if there's any systemic difference that would cause art majors to be more likely than music majors (like possibly the fact that musicians have to lean on each other for basically everything), or if it's just that the people drawn to both fields are influenced by the people present in each field (like how woodwinds have higher f:m ratios of incoming members than brass because of gender associations), or if it is the same and I'm just missing it on the music end of things..

    • @valoov
      @valoov 4 роки тому +61

@@firebrain2991 I'm studying at an art school. The way I see the difference is that music majors are often practicing a quantifiable skill, ie how well they play their instrument, how quickly they can pick up new scores, etc. A lot of visual arts students are not only critiqued on their skill within their medium of choice, but also on their style choices, the subject matter, their "taste" level. These are things which are much more subjective and often deeply personal, and although I think it's super important to receive critique on these aspects of your work when you're an artist, I think that's what can cause people to get defensive. Of course this doesn't count for music studies where composing is part of the curriculum, and I might be naively assuming wrong what things music students are judged on. I'm curious if this seems to make sense to you though! :)

      @nightandfayeify 3 роки тому +26

@@firebrain2991 Adding onto this, many of the art projects we get critiqted on, because I'm in higher level classes, are graded on the execution of the concept as well as its aesthetics. Art pieces that say something with ALL parts of it are the ones that tend to do really well.
For example, if your concept is a critique of consumer culture through the medium of painting, a well-rendered painting on canvas might not do as well as a decently-rendered painting on candy wrappers stuck together. In the second painting, both the subject of the painting and the medium itself contribute to making your point.
But that's for the more conceptual pieces. When art is being judged on purely on execution, like a figure drawing, you've been with the piece for hours and all you can see are the mistakes. Seeing those same mistakes pointed out and more you didn't even catch can be demoralizing to say the least.
I guess to try to make a comparison to a musical preformance, it would be as if not only your musical ability was being judged, but also things like your posture and how quietly you flip the pages. It wouldn't be "how good this song can be preformed", it would be "how well does your preformance convey the emotion of the piece" if that makes sense. Art is intrinsicly personal, a little piece of yourself, which is why critiques can really hurt.

@@nightandfayeify adding onto this as another music major - a low brass player and bass singer. Although instrumentalists generally take criticism pretty well, vocalists are much more touchy, for much the same reasons listed here for visual arts. When your singing is critiqued, it’s not just your skill at singing that can be critiqued. It can be your facial expressions, the shape of your mouth, your interpretation and style choices in your genre (generally classical art songs, opera arias, jazz, and musical theatre). Plus, if someone criticizes your tone, that’s YOUR voice, not an instrument. What if they also don’t like your speaking voice? What if simply talking to people annoys them cuz of your voice???
In instrumental music there is a more apparent cultural sensitivity to criticism rather than an individual sensitivity. Imagine the outrage if someone discard Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Purcell, ect ect and said their writing was basic or too on the nose or whatever? Music education takes these peoples’ near deity-status as a given, and any time someone’s like “hey maybe we should actually teach more modern music, like Count Basie and stuff, with the same focus and care?” White supremacists come out of the woodwork to spout vapid defenses of the old by delegitimizing the new (see Adam Neely’s video on white supremacy).

Sylvester G Harold Perhaps, but this wasn’t the case here, and it’s monetarily impossible for games journalists to explore every part of a game. A good book takes perhaps a dozen hours to complete, a good game can take upwards of a hundred even before you add in side-quests. In my opinion (and this is pure opinion) the onus is on you, the reader, to take the reviewer’s opinion as their truth, knowing that they were forced to rush through. Don’t get angry at them, just acknowledge that reviews are imperfect, it’s impossible for someone to perfectly describe a game to you before you play it, and move on. Admittedly, not that I play that many games or read that many reviews, but several of the ones I have read have noted at some point in the article that they either ignored the side quests or didn’t finish the main story. I’m an animator and I studied animation history in school. As a genuine lover of old animation and the origins of hand drawn...I honestly full heartedly agree with the racist reading of the style of animation used in cuphead. If you want to be a part of an artistic tradition: whether it’s film or animation or music or painting, it’s important to understand the history and it’s problematic aspects as well as it’s triumphs. What people don’t want to understand is you can like cuphead, you can like classic animation, but you can also criticize it.

One minor counterpoint to an otherwise strong video: King Dice, to me, is very clearly modelled on the black bandleader, singer and impresario Cab Calloway, from his demeanour to his dress sense and facial hair; Calloway and his band also famously performed his song "Minnie the Moocher" in a very early Betty Boop cartoon, a sequence which was hugely important for a number of reasons, not the least being that it was one of the first sound cartoons *and* soundtracked by black performers. (The song in question is also a dark, dark story about gambling addiction and basically a dirge.) While many of the tropes taken on by the designers of Cuphead do have some dubious overtones, I feel like that's one of the more respectful nods, although I do think it could have been more carefully handled perhaps.

Then I get told I'm definitely an SJW even though I don't think the developers of Cuphead are racist for borrowing elements from rubberhose animated cartoons that were racist because I consider Cuphead's use of those elements transformative.
Doesn't matter how much I try to explain that I don't think Cuphead is neither racist nor problematic, I have to be an SJW who disagrees with them because I'm not outraged about SJWs. I must submit and fit into the SJW box for disagreeing!

So embarrassingly enough, I used to fall for shit like this. I was primed to expect the next “SJW shitstorm” so if you said “feminists wanted to ban Zelda because it’s sexist, I would’ve believed you and would’ve taken to Twitter to complain about this “ultra-pc SJW-dominated world”. Ugh I was insufferable. I mean I still am but for other reasons.
I witnessed this fake outrage in action when on Reddit someone made a post about how men are really oppressed and women are the oppressors. Poster claimed he received death threats and horrible messages as a result. People in the thread were all in agreement about how horrible feminists are and how brave the OP was for posting what he did. Within the thread were heavily downvoted comments calling him a liar, so I tried a different tactic. Laughed along and asked to see screenshots so we could all laugh. Suddenly the OP went dead silent on the thread. My comment was the only one he hadn’t responded to. People began to join in asking for screenshots and before you knew it, the post was deleted. So basically if you want to call these people out, play along and ask for screenshots not in a way that shows you don’t believe them, but in a way that sounds like you want to laugh along. This is just one experience I’ve had using this method. It works surprisingly well. Oh and if I can find screenshots proving the story I just told you, I will add them in an edit.

I'd like to add a couple of examples.
    Mass Effect: Andromeda
Claim: "SJWs are ruining my games".
That's really happened: Troubled development history, new game engine lacking important features, major game rescopes -> most development were done in last 2 years -> timelines for writers, animators and testers shifted to the very end, hence poor quality of the final product. Gator folks blamed a number of individuals among people working at BioWare, "SJWs", for ruining "their" game.
Among them a motion capture actress, who was misrepresented as the lead animator. I'm not sure if the twitter message presented as confirmation was legit, but she was not.
A writer, who happened to be a woman and a feminist (the horror!). Writing is done by a team of people, it's 5-10 people. We know that it had a number of writers from ME3, what we don't know is how much she contributed and what parts. She was hired relatively late.
And the guy, Manveer Heir one of the developers, who was misrepresented as a manager who forced "diversity hires" and hence ruined the game. One of a few brown guys on the project, of course, wasn't a manager, on the project, nor he was in a position to force hires, an easily verifiable fact. I tried to explain that to one gater guy, presented the evidence, a (strikingly white) photo of development team & the managers. He kept grasping at straws, trying to find an excuse to still blame him.
    PUBG
Claim: "Some girls complained about a shirts model with camel toe, PUBG apologised and fixed that, therefore SJWs are distracting PUBG from real issues like improving the networking code. SJWs are ruining my games."
Engine development and 3D design is done by different people. Given the fact that selling skins is PUBG's business model they likely have an entire team of 3D designers. People didn't like something, they spoke out, they got it fixed. No harm is done.

It's the latest evolution of "#firstworldproblems". Can't actually argue a point? Imply that it's a moot one anyway because oh look over here, there's people dealing with far worse things than being "loltiggered" over "made up fake sjw anti-free-speech problems" or whatever new buzzwords they've designed.
Personally, as someone whose friend routinely denied herself the right to vent to others or lean on them for moral/emotional support for those very reasons, fuck people who use this argument. It's garbage, and exists solely to justify refusing to acknowledge someone.

AlphaOmegaSin is one of those gaming channels I am kinda embarrassed that I had ever subscribed to. He was a long line of channels that became ruined by obsessing over Anita Sarkeesian and calling everything "SJW".
Forced to reevaluate his channel, I realized that his content was fairly mediocre. A lot of his videos come off as unscripted rants that are highly repetitious. Sure, he name-dropped some great games, and he has an impressive collection, but he really lacks the intelligence and critical vocabulary to articulate what makes a game good or bad.

I used to sub to him too. Agreed with him completely about many things in gaming.
We both hate EA for being super greedy and making broken games.
We both hate quick time events as they don't add anything very interesting to game play "Press A to beat the game"
We both agree that super man 64 is trash lol.
But..... That being said........ He's still a horrible person. Mainly because of the stuff you just mentioned David Torre. Lol my name is David too.
I saw him also say some silly things like how he thought xbox one did the best at E3 in 2017. UHHH NO! lol. PS4 is killing xbox one.

Game Maker's Toolkit has an excellent series on Designing for Disability in games that touches on this issue (spanning all games, not just Cuphead)

It didn't present any conclusion to the question and was purely speculative in nature. And holy shit did gamers hate the very idea of an easy mode.
