I love how Jimmy is so quiet during the verse. You can hear that classic guitar rift. Then he comes roaring in for the chorus. So good that he leaves room for everything to breathe.
There was a time in the 90s that there was a real risk that things would turn out very badly for Jimmy Chamberlain. I'm glad to see he made it, older and wiser.
Yeah as a drummer, I've always admired his playing. Also, I went down the same path with heroin and know how insanely hard it is to kick. Very glad to see him healthy and still playing.
Yeah he really fucking loves it, he’s got a huuuge collection of gear and a big old pile of effects pedals, including everything way back from their biggest albums. I forget where I saw it on UA-cam but it was like a tour of some warehouse or whatever where he has all this shit stored, and how the Mayonaise guitar was some cheap fucked up guitar that would squeal when you paused, and eventually that organically kind of just became part of the song they kept in on purpose, and now its iconic. “Words define the plan.... And when I can... (SQUEALL), I will... (SQUEALL) Cool enough to always be it, dumb enough to always feel it” etc. (I know I butchered those lyrics 😆🙈 forgive me, you know what I mean tho.) There’s also a video by Eddie Van Halen discussing/promoting either his new (at the time like 10 yrs ago) “Wolfgang Guitar” (which is all he plays live ever since, I believe), or his EVH 5150 vacuum tube amp, and how/why they made it the way they did. (If I had to guess I’d say the amp video). And EVH says something like “Billy Corgan, from Smashing Pumpkins was here, and he’s like: ‘Where are the effects pedals?’ And I’m like: ‘I don’t need effects pedals. Just plugged straight into the amp like I’ve always done.’” And I’m not 100% sure but I think EVH is known for always doing it that way, and that’s how he achieved his famous “Brown sound” guitar tone.
Everytime Billy sings "But can you fake it, for just one more show?" I always think about their SNL performance where he sings that line and looks at D'arcy.
It warms my heart that the Smashing Pumpkins have reunited! I remember reading the article about when James joined Billy on stage for the first time in years in 2017! I say it over and over again, the 90's are coming back!!!

(I cut out the part here about Billy learning in retrospect he should have worked much harder to ensure his BAND all got credit fairly, and not just him.) Another good one, is Billy addressing to Joe Rogan how he recognizes that most ppl nowadays and even fans at concerts “really only know me as ‘The Rat In a Cage Guy’.” which is both sobering and impressively candid, honest, and humble of Billy to acknowledge. So it’s ironic to me they played that song here and not surprising they all seemed pretty half-hearted about it - Billy especially. Beautiful pleasure to see again one of the best alternative bands all over the world! My favorite band forever! Thanks a lot guys for this great video!
Pretty amazing that Howard picked that up about the chord progressions, I don't think any radio or television host in the world would have recognised that.
I wish I had this kind of access to legendary musicians. Not so much being the solitary audience member but the ability to dissect their songwriting process. "Play this riff. Now you play the other riff. Now both of you play them together." I can think of so many bands I'd like to do this to.
Jay Nichols it’s just sad the wrong riff caught his attention, the chorus uses an extremely common chord progressions. Nothing wrong with using them, they sound great in this song, but if you wanna talk about a section of the song with a great riff, it’s that baseline from the verse that’s just genius, simplicity at its finest
Of course, that sounds like fun. Dissecting music and trying out different parts. Without the glamour, without the shine, without the spotlight. Just mistakes, laughter, bad jokes, backhanded comments, and more laughter.
Jay Nichols • I think you found a great idea for a UA-cam channel, having songwriters (famous/or not so famous) break down their songwriting techniques while playing and explaining the origins and/or inspirations of the songs. I can't say I've seen a lot of that on UA-cam? It would certainly be very entertaining.
@@johnnyhammer it's really just Brainchild Billy...which isn't bad, but it makes sense why the lineup is always at risk Brilliance has its consequences.
That was awesome! The sound guys at the Howard Stern show nailed it again. When Metallica played on this show it was the best sounding performance I’ve heard from them in years.
You're right! Howard's sound engineer is truly talented. That show is making history in the last year's with some of the best performances I've seen from great rock and roll bands...
Dude their sound is so good, it made me become a Billie Eilish fan, straight up! I didn’t know anything about her and just thought she was some lazy teenage emo fad girl with songs the Instagram sluts all play posing like they’re actually at any risk of “seducing your Dad”. But then I listened to her 2 performances on this Howard Stern UA-cam clips. HOLY FUCK SHE CAN SING AMAZING!! It’s nothing like the record!! She can sing 10x better than you think! Seriously I’m a die hard Metal, hard rock, alternative/grunge fan, but go listen to her All The Good Girls Go To Hell video and come back and tell me your jaw didn’t fucking drop basically in the first 5 seconds she begins singing!! For me that was THE music performance of the whole year at least, I haven’t been so stunned and impressed in a long time. Doing it acoustic in Howard’s studio, she did it quite a bit different than the album. I even posted it to a bunch of my random followers (which does include a significant amount of Billie Eilish fans) and then a poll “Which is better: the acoustic live Howard Stern version of this song? Or the original album version?” (And obviously I assumed all the Eilish fans would be coming in heavily biased towards the album version they already know.) The results stunned me!! Something like 20:1 Stern/Acoustic vs Album!!!! THATS how good it is!
Billy and James are "weaving" via their guitars ...a great technique, rarely heard nowaday's. And Billys voice is still on point. Also, credit to the sound engineer 🔥💯👍
Among the best guitar things in this song is in my opinion a quite simple one; the Bb (or whatever chord it is) that James starts to hammer at 2:50 (go to 2:49 to hear it come in) - it really lifts things up. Here it sounds even better than the Mellon Collie recording where I just noticed it kind of fades in instead of starting directly when Billy sings ”…same.” It's also a bit more present (less in the background) here in this performance. Great stuff. :)
saw them back in 2018, one of the best shows I've ever been to. glad they kept Jeff around even after James returned, helps fill out the "wall of guitars" like the classic albums.
Saw them live in Chicago last August(2019). At one point during the show billy said “ladies and gentlemen , mr James Iha!” And the whole crowd went nuts and James played the coolest guitar solo ever. As a 32 year old kid who grew up in the 90’s I can tell you that was one of the most epic things I ever experienced . It was so surreal .
absolute coolest part was watching billy play the riff alone, and then james followed suit, and then together! thanks for letting us hear the raw side of the live music that usually is lost in the chaos.
Lets go with epic or legendary.... For me, when Billy gets back to some of his early style riffs and even some of his heavy shit... ill see him as legendary. The dude has grown and evolved and come full circle. Time to get back to his guitar playing....Pumpkins style guitars with a metal edge like he and James killed back in the day.
Thor Carlton Yeah I remember reading Billy’s side of it, on some metal blog news site, they actually posted a loooong stream of iPhone text message screenshots from D’Arcy between her and Billy, discussing/negotiating her joining their new tour (a few years ago). D’Arcy was the person being interviewed by the website and she provided all the texts. And she even profusely responded to the comments at the bottom (using handle “Fey Whutt”) But man, it was like Billy bending over backwards, really being fucking accommodating, GENEROUSLY ACCOMODATING, offering to make it all work with whatever HER schedule allows so she can tend to her existing responsibilities she was concerned about, they’d put her up in hotels, fly her back and forth and take care of all that. And he gives her so many chances and he’s reasonable and she just acts like a petulant child and throws tantrums over relatively minor shit, like... totally not recognizing that Billy (who IS still successful and relevant) is GIVING her a sight-unseen position back in the band LITERALLY WITHOUT HEARING HER PLAY ANYTHING FOR OVER 19 YEARS! And she totally blows it! It’s worth reading for sure! It won’t be hard to find. No offense to anyone suffering from it, but she comes off like a combination of an addict and a classic girl with Borderline Personality Disorder. Just totally unreasonable and unpredictable from day to day. She made that so clear with her text behavior, ultimately Billy saw it was obvious she was NOT going to be reliable enough to have on the tour, despite their best hopes and efforts. And I swear he STILL took her abuse and STILL offered her to make at least a handful of ‘special guest’ performances bc he knew the fans wanted her on the tour so bad!!
Bruh the top comment wasn't kidding. I've never heard a live performance on Howard screens show and this sounds so good. I keep hearing good things about Howard's show and the sound engineering will probably be the straw that broke the camels back. I should start getting into Howard's show.
I’ll never stop being impressed by Stern’s sound engineer

Jay Nichols • I think you found a great idea for a UA-cam channel, having songwriters (famous/or not so famous) break down their songwriting techniques while playing and explaining the origins and/or inspirations of the songs.
I can't say I've seen a lot of that on UA-cam? It would certainly be very entertaining.
Its why HS has always been one of, if not the best interviewer around. John Mellancamp and Billy Joel interviews are great.
Best band of the 90s, but the tension between these guys is palpable at all times.
Maybe that's what makes them great...
@@johnnyhammer Agreed, that seems to be the recurring theme with great bands.
@@johnnyhammer it's really just Brainchild Billy...which isn't bad, but it makes sense why the lineup is always at risk
Brilliance has its consequences.
Bruno great but it’s Nirvana
Great band but AIC>
Don't miss the ending when they talk it's hilarious
I forgot how popular this song was when I was in college. I haven't heard it in years. I still like it !!
Drumming is simply sublime perfect power and finesse!!!
James iha just permanently indifferent 😂
Lol definitely
Dude is living his shoegaze life to a T.
If you didn't point it out would have know that was James lol
Seems like he's thinking about the TED talk he's going to give after this.
E-Channel I’d go to that TED talk.
So glad Howard brought Smashing Pumpkins into his studio. They are one of the best.
Song starts 1:09
This is one of the greatest rock songs ever.
His voice is something special
Fantastic performance, great great drummer, brilliant guitar, unique unfogettable voice - still a soupergroup!
"I don't know why Billy didn't get along with you! You seem like a mellow dude, man. You don't remember anything...its great!"
Haha you should check out their live videos man
Dude their sound is so good, it made me become a Billie Eilish fan, straight up!
Or the original album version?” (And obviously I assumed all the Eilish fans would be coming in heavily biased towards the album version they already know.)
The results stunned me!! Something like 20:1 Stern/Acoustic vs Album!!!! THATS how good it is!
I love James Iha's voice. He sounds so chill haha.
It's so great to have James and Jimmy back. Jimmy can actually keep a steady tempo without every song progressively speeding up to double time.
He still sounds great!
Finally saw them this year and it gave me goosebumps. Love it!
I absolutely love the Smashing Pumpkins!!
what an excellent sound mix - every thing is crystal clear
That drummer! Wrists, relaxed. A proper player
Not the same without the ”cage" shriek.
I was just thinking the same that's the best part in my opinion
Billy probably doesn't want to pass out in the middle of a performance again.
Billy's voice was phenomenal back in the day. Not sure if he can do that any more, or if he even wants to. Amazing performance nonetheless.
Agreed.
Bill Aper well he is 52, can’t expect him to sound like he did at half that age
Billy and James are "weaving" via their guitars ...a great technique, rarely heard nowaday's. And Billys voice is still on point. Also, credit to the sound engineer 🔥💯👍
Out of curiosity, what do you mean by weaving?
@@walshelliot1 Usually you have a rhythm and lead guitar they kind of blend together here that's all
@@WH3 so just normal dual guitar band music
Such a GREAT song! So raw, energetic, and even melodic!
Brings back memories.
Billy Corgan is music genius.
He's not dumb thats for sure
He wrote everything for everyone in his band .
Darcy deserves alot of cred too. She was a major influence more than people realize
He thinks so too.
Duggalo because she was a girl.
Love these Stern performances ! Thanks Howard !
Mellon collie and the infinite sadness, one of my favorite albums
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMES!
One of the greatest vocalists
Darcy is one of the best most underappreciated bassists ever. No one could ever replace her and what she brought to the band
But Billy wrote and recorded most of those basslines
@@mastod0n1 sure mansplanner
Jack Bates is better
@@softeng2023 He's a master, Master Bates.
absolute coolest part was watching billy play the riff alone, and then james followed suit, and then together! thanks for letting us hear the raw side of the live music that usually is lost in the chaos.
Jimmy laughing and clapping at Howard's joke about Billy and James at the end of this is priceless.
Man, they sound great. Very self aware vocal performance. Bravo.
Wow 25 years and its still as good and relevant.
Lead Guitarist looks happy to be alive.
He's probably bored of always playing this song
That's how James iha is he always like bored look.
That’s true plus James (the guitarist) is playing simple bar cords
He's not bored at all. He's stayed very busy. He's played guitar for A Perfect Circle for a long time now as well as plays in about 5 other bands.
That’s just how James is. He’s actually the silliest guy but has the most dry and deadpan personality. He’s basically trolling everyone all day 😂
Jimmy stil amazes me after three decades. So fluid and powerfull
Give the sound engineer a raise immediately! that mix is so good for a live performance. they could make that an official release as it is now.
Billy Corgan is still God! No D'arcy but it brings me peace to see James Iha back with the band where he belongs.
Smashing Pumpkins 4 life!!
Yeah Iha really shone in Smashing Pumpkins... I mean APC is great but Iha really had such synergy with D'arcy, Corgan, and Chamberlain.
Thou shall not worship false idols. If Billy Corgan were God he would at least have hair.
D'arcy might be in the band if she were a little more mature.
And she even profusely responded to the comments at the bottom (using handle “Fey Whutt”)
But man, it was like Billy bending over backwards, really being fucking accommodating, GENEROUSLY ACCOMODATING, offering to make it all work with whatever HER schedule allows so she can tend to her existing responsibilities she was concerned about, they’d put her up in hotels, fly her back and forth and take care of all that.
Billy Corgan is one of the best rock Icons of Alternative Rock
I really wanted to hear CAAAAGE, but alas the older, milder Corgan couldn't give it to me. Still great but tamer.
BurgundyandBlue1111 Same here...
He still does it. Maybe saving his voice idk.
he brought out what looked like throat spray at the end
The ending... that humor is Awesome!!!!
I saw them about 5 years ago in a small venue in the SF Bay Area; The Warfield. They played a flawless show!! Amazing!!
Jimmy is one of the greatest drummers ever
Great performance!
Beautiful!
Bruh the top comment wasn't kidding. I've never heard a live performance on Howard screens show and this sounds so good. I keep hearing good things about Howard's show and the sound engineering will probably be the straw that broke the camels back. I should start getting into Howard's show.
oh man this song is still beautiful. this type of songs are what's missing in today's music.
that last laugh says it all
