Gotta thank Jack White for giving every new guitarist and bassist an easy satisfying riff to motivate them into learning their instrument
Yes.. him & Cobain with Come As You Are
Right? Was my first song and it felt sooo cool to be able to play it!
People always want music to be so complex but sometimes simplicity is the best. It’s easy to remember simple.
And drums too! Jack and Meg helped me practice and get better by ear
@@Joemamahahahaha821exactly, jack is a good guitar player and is capable of more technical things, but he just made something that sounds good

I think of Seven Nation Army as the modern day Smoke on the Water. You hear it and you know what time it is. It's also one of the first songs a guitarist/bassist learns.
Yeah, pretty soon they won’t allow you to play it at Guitar Center…

That’s a great call!
I just retired as a middle school music teacher. “Seven Nation Army” is a magic spell/workhorse that I was able to use everywhere, every way, and at any time. It always worked in the classroom! Thanks Jack!
Thank you for doing that job, or having done it and introducing those kids to some good music!

Back when I was a young kid it was the first song I performed in front of a crowd, which I wanted to drum but we had too many drummers so it made me learn guitar. Now Im 30 have toured as the lead guitarist supporting bands like parkway drive and I killed the prom queen, and I owe it all to a music teacher just like you pushing that riff on me :) Thanks for inspiring so many other kids!
thank you for your service.
Its called "buttrock" and its because people are sheep that can be controlled by the musical formula...called POP.
"playing nothing but rock"
“The more people don’t know where it came from, the happier I am.”
That has to be one of the most selfless and humble statements of all time.
It is a truly beautiful sentiment
Of all Time? You are out of your mind.
@@thebluefus It's a bit hyperbolic sure, no need to be rude
No, 'of all time' is warranted: that's a pretty dam good definition of healthy pride. To be more happy that people love something you created than to have any need, desire or thought that they should associate it with you...
But I agree about the "rude" thing. I'd like to see Miss Manners come up with something better: mostly pissy it was a musician who hasn't been dead a few centuries and that people have heard of came up with it, I expect 😂
Well.... when you'd had AMAZING Success (as a rare 2000s Rock Star), it becomes easier to be magnanimous.
That White Stripes run on Conan’s show in the 00s was so great. Their Jolene cover, among other things of course, kicked so much ass.
Other songs off the top of my head; Apple Blossom, Black Math
Truth Doesn't Make a Noise, Why Can't You be Nicer to Me
Many of these songs are great in a shuffle with other artists of somewhat the same genre but 5-6 White Stripes songs in a row makes me bored of the sound.
I still think each track is individually great and I still like listening to them.
Their performance of "Icky Thump" was one of their best. Jack's guitar tone was so filthy it was awesome. I hope we can see it on his archive in the future.
Conan having And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead... was pretty cool
The Strokes too. Conan had both bands on every week for a month when their albums would first come out. I remember staying up late in junior high to hit record and tape each performance.
did they play that one song they made
Jack White looks like a character in a children's Christmas movie.

Jack is a legend. He is truly one of those unique characters that we are blessed to experience in his prime.

got to see him live earlier this month and it's definitely the best show I have ever been to. him and his band were absolutely incredible! the way the crowd went insane when it was time for "Seven Nation Army", as well as hearing everyone do the chant, lights out and everything, before the encore set started. had goosebumps all over. it's moments like these that show how loved that song is. forever will be iconic.
Couldn't agree more. It was honestly one of the greatest live shows I've ever seen. He's an incredible musician and his band are amazing. So nice also having the no phones rule coz everyone was just so in the moment.
Its not really one of his best songs but it just has that quality that makes it stand out maybe its
the same riff playing for the entire song
I'd love to see more 'Behind The Music' interviews with Conan.
I totally agree. More Conan interviews. And more musician interviews, please.
Jack has such a love and respect for the history of music. I've always had the sense he sees himself as a preservationist of the old ways while still pushing forward on new paths...
A simple catchy riff is like any great art, people say anyone could do that, but they didn’t and don’t! Mr white did and Meg smashed those drums, a true classic!
I highly recommend watching, It might get loud. Jack literally made a guitar out of nails, wire and a block of wood. Crazy talented!
Jack White is legit. Musician, furniture maker. All around cool dude.

The crazy thing about SNA is that it's kind of like a stock turnaround, the sort of melody you'd use to bring a song from the end of a chorus back into the verse, but just the choice in itself to make it the main hook that drives the entire song makes it one of the most original riffs ever. "Hit The Road, Jack" (heheh, Jack) does a similar thing.
You can sing "....But the cat came back the very next day" to it and it works.
This never occurred to me but you're right, and that's so very interesting!
yeah it is like a turnaround now that i think about it
Jack and Conan have been one of my favorite bromances I didn’t know I needed for years now.
Thanks you jack white for giving us the greatest football(or soccer in America) anthem of all time
fun fact ... the term "soccer" actually comes from the UK
the US just "borrowed" it and made it a thing
so we are not entitled to blame the americans for that term
Its called soccer in Ireland too and and Australia and New Zealand
@@hansele666 thank you
@@conshea7382 no one over here in Ireland calls it soccer
Perfect riff for the meatheaded soccer fans (the dumbest most generic fans of any sport)
Not a massive fan of the white stripes. But gotta respect him for that line. " it's not mine anymore". What a great philosophy on making music for people.
Why not? Answer!
not legally of course ;)
The song is just amazing. Simple and complex at the same time.
Last year my town’s high school football team used that song as an anthem on their way to winning the state championship. It was cool hearing the marching band play it during that epic final game at Ford Field
Conan: What is going through your head when you are sitting in a stadium and you hear that song?
Jack: 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
thats the joke conan made, just shittier
Exactly, and he should share at least a portion of the earnings with Italian football legend Francesco Totti, he is basically the reason why the song had a renaissance a few years after it came out, and then became a global sports anthem😂
@@danyf.1442 who??
@@johnwerner69 Italian football legend, just google his name and seven nation army, the story will come up 😜
@@danyf.1442 That seems like mainly in Italy he made it famous because it was already highly popular here
Good to see Jack and Conan together - those two met before either one was famous at a bowling alley in Detroit. How random.
Wow did not know they are friends, life long friends
It was such a monotonic track, yet it moved every generation. hell, even to this day.
Oh and.. Love you Conan!
But the vocal melody in that song, especially in the pre- chorus is very intricate. It's actually really gorgeous and far away from being simple. That is what I find impressive about the song, which sadly most dismiss or don't even notice. So the track isn't that monotonic really. But if you reduce the song into only being this "dum * dum dum dum dum duuum* duuum*" Then, yes it is pretty monotonic.
@@Atlas65 Thats the beauty of simple and monotonic stuff. Actually most hits that we have, are "simple". Its the art of putting everything into the right place. Rick Rubin is the master of it.
big fan! glad to see Jack's not pissed off and so intense as he used to come across
Men. What an ARTIST. I had the Luck to see The White Stripes live in Buenos Aires, and to this day is one of my favorite recital i've ever been.

He’s right. As a musician, some of your best songs write themselves. Like they’re quick ideas that were gifts from the divine to share with humanity.
Settle down hippie lol
@@kingjellybean9795 ?
@@kingjellybean9795 are you a musician?
100% It's the flow state.
Totally takes the fun out of authorship.
Man that story actually gave me chills when he was talking about the movie his mom liked. That must be such a surreal feeling.
Riffs are cool. They encapsulate the feeling of the song. Just because it’s difficult to play, doesn’t mean it’s better, it means it is inefficient.
That’s why those east catchy riffs are soo cool, because the efficiently do with the sounds what others may have over painted, with more expensive brushes….but one guy comes along and pisses on their new cool brushes and expensive music degree.
People can understand that! Deeply
Absolutely. And it goes perfectly hand in hand with the simple fact: It’s far easier to write a complicated good song, than a simple good song.
With this logic and argument you are saying that riffs like the one from Seven Nation Army and Smoke on Water are superior over all the other more complicated legendary riffs out there.
Or that Mary had a little Lamb or the ABCD are more superior melodies then the more intricate melodies that people over 5 prefer, because everybody gets those songs and remember them.
You've missed the point, and taken an exaggeration to a ridiculous conclusion. Making something great that is also simple is harder than making something great that is complicated. A fact that has been true forever about all artforms. And while we're on it, ABCD or Twinkle Twinkle, written by Mozart, is a melody superior to most, yes. It is by definition, a legendary riff. @@Atlas65
Saw him live awhile ago. Completely astounded he was that good, and live. His band was solid. I believe one passed on, rip.
First riff 12 year old me learned to play on the guitar, way back in 2003. I started on acoustic guitar and it hurts your fingers initially to play, drove my mother nuts playing that one riff over and over, good times.
Lol
I can listen to Jack White talk for hours. He’s a genuine.
Genuine? I think you meant genius?
To be able to create such an impactful song that is so simple and withstood the test of time, the theme song of freaking everything.....has to be the most awesome thing for a musician I'm sure.
This dude is legit like "I want this song to go down in history" and truly doesn't care if he goes down with it. That is artistry.
Back in 2006 I was in one of the large beer halls at Oktoberfest, Munich and few Germans started singing the notes of "Seven Nation Army" and within a minute everyone young and old were singing along.
He did a version of 7NA at a concert like last summer in the UK and I watched it just hoping for a good version... It was probably the best I have ever heard?! And the song is 20 years old?!
If you get the chance to see him live, do it. Whether you know every song or not, you wont regret it.
It's coincidental that those two are talking about that song. I remember the exact moment that I learned of White stripes. I was in college, in my apartment, watching a repeat of Conan's late night show on comedy central, when he had Jack and Meg on and they played seven Nation Army for the first time and it absolutely floored me. I became a massive White Stripes convert after their appearance on Conan's show.
I don’t think you know what “coincidental” means.
@@JasonZakrajsek ok Merriam and/ or Webster, which word choice should I use pretell? It seems to me the fact they are talking about a particular song on Conan's podcast has no bearing whatsoever to the event that occured 20 years ago. There is no link between them and my experience, hence it's a coincidence. However, I'm open to suggestions.
@@jasonflay8818 I think the word/phrase you might have wanted here was “pray tell.” The reason it’s probably not a coincidence is Conan seems to have been friends with Jack White for quite a while now and promoted his music on his show. The host of an immensely popular talk show, talking about a popular song that got some of its first exposure on his show doesn’t really seem like a coincidence.
@@jclark1693 I would agree however there is almost three decades of music they could have talked about, and they happened to discuss in some length about that particular song. I don't doubt there is a better word choice but off hand I couldn't think of one. Do you have a suggestion?

My daughter just started taking drum lessons - she's 13. She's just binned Purple Rain for Seven Nation Army as her first proper song to learn. It's truly irresistible.
Gotta love Jack White. Just seems like a nice fun person who realizes the silliness of life.
When we were waiting in line at the movies to see The Dark Knight in 2008, my brother and his friend jokingly started singing this song. My brother did the riff and his friend sang in falsetto. Everyone in line ended up cheering for them. I think of that every time I hear this song now.

Jack White saying it's not his anymore, is the most beautiful and intelligent description of the song ever.
He can say what he wants. Knowing full well that he laughs on his way to the bank :D More power to him tho, but lets not act like he is somehow being super generous about it :D
When this song came out I was a JR in high school. The angels had just won a World Series. The lakers were dominating, and my club soccer team was crushing other teams. It couldn’t be a more perfect time and this riff inevitably always brings me back to wanting to battle back to my best self.

@@Jump-2-the-moon I don't necessarily interpret that he's saying he peaked in high school. Reminiscing the experience of being part of a winning team, and feeling motivated by that is a good thing.

to be fair at album launch, all radios blasted that song from the get go so that might have helped people connect with it :D loved the entire album (and still do), one of my most listened ever for sure
My drill instructor at marine boot camp used this song to teach us how to March to that drum beat. Left foot on that heavy drum 🥁
To me, the lesson here is that you never know what you have until you try it out or put it out there to the world. Accidental or not, SNA doesn't become a masterpiece if the Stripes don't decide to release this 'throwaway' song. It's a good message for everyone in a creative endeavor: even the things you think are failures could end up being massively successful anyway.
Yes! It’s a great lesson. You just have to be willing to try

Those were dark times pre-internet times where if you didn’t know who sang a great song you heard at the stadium or on the radio you were left banging your head against the wall for days weeks months years.
Everyone should know where every great song came from Jack!
Love this! Conan should do it with John Mayer and The Strokes as well!!!
Lazaretto, over and over and over, taking me back, you don't know what love is, back and biscuit... so many jams
Saw Jack in concert recently and the audience basically sang the whole song. It was a amazing!
Jack White is kinda giving off Hunger Games host vibes. I love the look!
I remember very clearly when that album came out. I had just finished my first year of university and was working as a treeplanter. I listened to this song sooo many times. It gave me a lot of motivation to work hard. It's funny to hear that it was just a throwaway for them but that's fine. It was meaningful to me.
This is played in a lot of footie stadiums, well loved over here. Will live on for a long long time.
When i was in highschool everyone knew this song. Just took one guy playing the first few notes and everyone would go crazy.
Jack and Conan brought up some fantastic points how Seven Nation Army is slowly detaching itself from the White Stripes and becoming folk music
In a way, it makes the song immortal--completely detached from the original creator of it, and different people across the world may ascribe meaning to it on their own.
Perhaps beyond the royalties and the recognition, having a piece of art outlive you and outshine you can be one of the greatest honors an artist may have.

I wonder how many at sports areas know the musician behind the quick riffs that are played. I’m a music fanatic, and don’t give a toss for most sports.
The fact he didn’t know means he didn’t intentionally set out to write an anthem. Probably why it went so deep into eternal anthem so smoothly.

The fact the record company didn’t want it to be a single is astonishing.
But how could they know either it would connect so much with people? Have seen this happen to so many bands where a B-side of a single becomes bigger then A-side. lol
It actually happens more than you'd assume. I can't think of any songs off the top of my head, but there have been hit songs that never would have been hits if the record company had its way and never released them.
For me, the story that perfectly shows how much record companies knows about music, was when some kids make a rock band, and they try to sign to some company. Every single one of them rejected them. But One of the them, even say to the kids why. Because they where a rock band, and electric guitars where out of fashion, and it won't sell anymore. Rock was dead. No one cared anymore.
Well... I think everyone knows this story. The kids who have a rock band where the Beatles.
My best friend is a musician. Seven Nation Army was his son's first song that Dad was impressed with. Thanks Jack
It’s not just a sports anthem, I’ve been to many concerts, especially at festivals, where the crowed randomly starts singing the riff. Before concerts waiting for the band to come on or to call them back for an encore. Even randomly during shows sometimes. It really weird but also a fun way for people to connect :)
So many great guitarists out there but only Jack White came up with that simple riff. Simple but so damn effective.
But isn't that the dream of every great guitar player , to create that simple yet timeless riff? lol. I imagine so many riffs that get put away because they might think it is too simple.
If you notice, many of the best songs ever usually are based off of one simple riff. Smoke on the Water and Under Pressure, are two others that immediately come to mind.
