At least darkness didn't imprison him this time.
Lars is a F'king wicked drummer💯
Ok
6:53 When he said "Landmine, has stanamahsai, givamasey, hearamahaireh, taykamastrafe, takemoutside, givaliloh, givamahsoul to seeeeeellllf" I really felt that.
That cracked me up🤣🤣☝🏼
This made me laugh so hard 😂😂
Yes
It’s because he messed up the lyrics
i cry laughed at this. idk what that means tho
I feel bad for James. He lost so much and Howard made him realise this song was actually all about him
Yeah!!. I could see that reflected in James's face
Made him realise it so bad that he forgot the lyrics to a song he poate e literally a thousand times
that was just straight therapy
I would not worry about it, it feeds the demon. James is one of the strongest in Rock and Roll for a reason. He thinks it all through without the rest of the rubbish.
It's fucking brutal.
1:26 the sudden change in James' face, holy shit man. Howard is very blunt and I respect that, but fuck me the guy DOES need to chill.
I almost cried at that moment :(
Let's keep it light!
2:08 James replied cleverly
You can see his inner child in that exact shot.
It’s immediate he went from kinda smirking and okay to depressed and broken
Howard: so james you had your childhood stolen, your dad left you and your moms dead, great now play this song and try not to cry
James: ....
Ikr
Nah, that was totally unnecessary.
🤣🤣
Damn, unfair lol there.
You are a crappy interviewer Howard
omg Lars messing up right in the beginning and James laughing is hilarious
And James forgetting Darkness
Must be easy to forget with so many song in mind
I don't mind the small screw-ups, but those three identical boring all-snare fills in a row at 6:00 were a bit too much
Lars didn’t mess up and even if he did it was just a cymbal hit. Trust me I play this song on drums all the time. Why do people always hate on lars you realize every single musician messes up right.
@BasketCase 420 2:58
Howard is lucky to get his own personal show from Metallica ..
Multiple times
I was thinking the same thing my dude
You ain’t shitting..this is a big fucking deal
@@adriantrusca1245 wowo
and can say his remarks and his thoughts at the same time !
3:14 The bass in the live version always gives me chills
This song with bass though!
theres a AJFA mix here on YT with the original bass turned up, it sounds so great.
The way Lars mixes a whole different song at a different tempo into this is just genius.
His mastery of polyrhythms is unparalleled

The face and voice of James change a little when Howard was talking to him, i never see James like that before.
Probably didn’t think Howard was gonna interrogate him about his childhood right before playing the song lol I’d be pretty shook as well
I think Howard said to much
Howard isn't the most sympathetic of guys lol at least not how he comes off
nah
me neither
James's clean guitar tone will always be epic
For real! EMGs!
Sounds like it did in 88
I love his clean tone so much
It's not so clean. Enough chorus on it. Or/and some kind of flanger i guess. But sound really nice!
>Uses the thinnest tone ever
>im sure you play guitar, n00b
2:44 even Lars went "wow, that's out of tune ..."
6:53 me while presenting my school project
8:25 When you remember you can still save it
Imagine leaving your son who became the musician legend...
I think Eminems dad can relate to this
“Hey James... Times are really hard now and... Uh I’m sorry I left... (No I’m not) How about a loan of $10,000?”
That’s the beauty of it. James probably wouldn’t have been without his dad leaving
Can be said about half of all legendary musicians.
Hahahahahaha
Imagine if rob just stood there the whole time and didn’t play 😂
lol
Or he just plays unplugged
Jason in the background nods his head in agreement
actually lol'd at this haha
He struggled 😭
0:52 Lars is hyping himself up all like "Come on, Lars, you play this every night and still can't do it, or the double bass. Is it two snare hits? Three? Maybe not even a snare hit? Do I even play in Slayer? Or is this Metallica?"
Bro this is perfect lol. I can picture him saying “come on Lars…”
And he still messed up in the beginning 😂
02:59 James reaction to when Lars forgot to jump on the beat with the crash is priceless
Damn it Howard, you got into James's head and threw him off his game
For real he was digging up trauma
James forgot the darkness imprisoning me lyrics. Who cares. There’s no better song anywhere, ever. And he gifted it to the world. I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times, and not once without goosebumps. The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you, James, for touching the hearts and spirits of millions.
It seems to me more like he is taking the piss after being interviewed by a moron about the song
Noooo!!! .... you're way off base brother?.... Because of Howard Stern? .... Howard Stern is loved by everyone!!! (Everyone cool & honest that is ) !!! WAY TO READ PEOPLE THO !😆😅🤣
Thank you for saying such kind words about this song and acknowledging the performance! This song has truly been a gift to the world! such a beautiful thing to say ( because it is true!) and also another "thank you" is in order, because a 'purist' like myself notices too many things that probably should go unnoticed, yet we nay-sayers seem to always be armed and ready to dissect every note and syllable. ..*as i am about to do*...we notice things such as: the bass wasnt present enough, his backing vocals were non-existent, Lars started off too fast and appeared to want to just get it over with, James 'forgot' lyrics, but i think he was just too focused on and distracted by lars hastiness, and Kirk wore glasses to hide his eyes in shame as his solo was cut. From what i saw, this band is still struggling with their demons..regardless, it was still an amazing performance by one of the most amazing bands that are still with us.
"There’s no better song anywhere, ever."
Calm down.
@@thehop639 shut up
How can you NOT love Metallica? They have a song for everyone.
One of the greatest skills you’ll learn as a live vocalists is the ability to mumble nonsense somewhat convincingly when you forget the lyrics
Chill….
@@thegiftedone it’s true
Indeed
6:55
kirk and lars barely look awake, james is being tolerant and rob looks like he's just happy to be there XD
My thoughts exactly!
lmao rob is so wholesome i love him
Mind you, Howard airs from 6am-10am Eastern time, so they all likely had to wake up early for this set.
Rob is never NOT happy to be there...dude is a f-ing zen factory!
Wdym lars is just vibing maybe a little too much tbf but there aint nothing wrong with that
James really had a realisation moment there, huh.
Lars Ulrich is certainly one of the drummers to have lived.
no he’s undead that’s not the same as living
🤣😂🤣
Lmao
Haha you got me
😅🤣🤣🤣
James absolutely nailed how to forget lyrics with grace and style
Howard shook James so much with the songs meaning James messed the lyrics up
indeed
Yes and I think these Howard’s questions really weren’t neccessary. He has talked about this already, people can search it on website, so why this was needed? Also the song says it all..
@@luciatalajova764 because Howard needs something to talk about on his show?
James is the GOAT.. and even sometimes sounds like one
That took an unexpected turn 😂
I agree, LeBron is the goat
He looked like one in 2007
sounds like One 😉
even looks like one sometimes
You can actually hear Robert's bass. Always loved the bass line Jason wrote for this one.

**Lars does a fill**
James: _shhhutup_
James seems a bit emotional but this is badass performance.
I think this performance is badass because he's emotional
Kirk is looking so badass with those sunglasses on
I agree, 2nd to james
The way lars moves his mouth when jamming is classic, you know he's really getting into what he's playing.
James and Kirk play so well together. One of the best guitar duo's of all time imo
Never heard Metallica claim to be the most technically gifted band yet, despite their heroic energy and amazing songs, they continue to be criticized for minor live errors. Shame, I just love everything they do and what they have done for rock/metal.
I started to appreciate them much more when I started playing guitar. While the riffs aren't technically proficient, it's damn good songwriting. The riffs are a lot more impactful and memorable than a lot of bands.
Right. Lars does not deserve all the hate that he gets too
"Heroic energy" you diehard metallica fans are cringy
They are legends not despite but with those errors.
Yes sometimes they do stupid mistakes for being professional musicians, but i like a lot their attitude, it is wild and free in musical expression. It's rare and spontaneous and that's for sure a force. In addition some of their songs are anthems and trash metal masterpieces, so i would not complain. I love them since i was kid, they are living legends in metal music. One is “one” of my favourite song from them
2:59 Lars hit the crash at wrong time and James laugh 🤣
That's Lars trying to "mix it up" but it makes the song sound completely different. There's a reason the song was so popular, and a reason people now consider Lars a shit drummer.
I came to the comments just to see if anyone else noticed lmao
@@Treyorrrr nah he just missed the first cymbal choke, he wasn't trying to mix it up or anything
And 6 seconds before this Kirk failed
@@Treyorrrr No, he messed up. I'm not saying he is a bad drummer because he inspired me to play drums. But he still can make mistakes, don't defend him when its clearly a mistake.
I once made my mother cry with this song. I was a teenager and recently became a fan of Metallica. I loved the lyrics of One and read (or rather translated) them to my mother. She started crying because it reminded her of her mother, who died about 8 years before from brain cancer. The cancer made her lose her faculties one after another, she stopped recognizing my mother, stopped speaking, lost her hearing and ability to move before dying. And the song brought it all back for my mother. This was all over 20 years ago and I still remember it.
damn i didnt notice that
Thanks for sharing this! ❤🌈❤

I love how kirk just wants to play already
4:55 could anyone hear Rob singing? Lol
Mic wasn’t turned up enough 😂 poor Rob

I followed these guys for years. My heart goes to James for living through all that. No hate to Howard at all. Bringing past things to the surface is painful. But, it helps us to love James even more.
8:25 is one of the coolest harmony thrash grooves ever
“Being trapped inside your own body not being able to speak.”
This is exactly what being a stutterer is like.

It's called "baiting" and it's not cool.

Que disparate con 60 años todavía conserva bastante el tono y la potencia de la voz hetfield
One of the most powerful songs in all of metal history. I still get chills every time I hear it.
2:14
Personally, I’m not a sentimental person at all; but there are a few songs that at least get me to the verge of crying. This is one of them. Specially the official video version of the song, with the extra scenes and dialogues:
-What’s he saying?
-Kill me. Over and over again.
“I don’t know if I’m alive and dreaming or dead and remembering”
I never realized how much of a radio voice James has
I LOVE how they play a double guitar solo....this song is heavy metal brilliance !!! One of the best Heavy Metal songs ever !
Howard: "Did you cry when you wrote this song?" James: "No, i did not" Howard: "just try to play this song without cry"
“One” of the greatest songs ever!
On my top five most listened song, still gives me shivers
I just love that we've seen this song played in stadiums for what, 30 something years? But even on a small stage they still have a blast and rock it out and have as much fun as when they were 20 years old jamming in the garage.
WAS THAT BASS I HEARD, Lars must be fuming
😂
Exactly my thought🤣
much respect for this band, it’s incredible how far james has come. he was alone ... music was the only thing that remained a constant. and blessed us by giving us the most iconic albums in music history. inspired millions... thank you metallica.
0:50 Lars preparing for a marathon
Wow, James’ older brother told him about Johnnys Got His Gun-my older brother told me about One. That’s so cool
James’s regular voice is very nice to hear, if he reads me a bedtime story I’ll have a sweet dream
7:22 what james said when he heard the st anger snare
James took all that close-to-the-bone personal comparison extremely well!
James sounds SO good. 🤘🤘🤘until he dropped the land mines twice.
🤘 more like ✊
when you forget the lyrics but the song is still amazing
i think he is just trying to sing at speed and wasn't ready lol.. he knows that part.
James voice is like a velvet. Shines all the time ✨
One of the best songs ever 😊
Damn Howard went hard on this one
ooooooh my justice for bass indeed, i can hear the bass flowing out of my speakers.
So good to see how much these guys still love rocking out to a song they've probably played literally thousands of times
02:12 heck, half the times I hear it, tears fall from my eyes. I have a toxic playlist on my phone, consisting of One + Unforgiven I/II/III + Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt. Even when I’m in an absolutely good mood I normally don’t survive that! And I can only imagine how hard it actually is for James himself, as the person writing 4 of these songs, and as the person who these songs are about, how difficult it would be for him when he plays. And I mean here we just saw he messed up part of the lyrics of a song he’s been playing for what? 30, 30+ years?
Always amazing watching masters perform their craft. So cool!
My Favorite song in the world... its perfect!!!
I had forgotten how much I loved Metallica and the incredible artist James is 😍
These live performances on Howard's show always sound fantastic👍
One of my favorites of all time.
Amazing how James held up his emotions when Howard went into his childhood..
James' emotional control is something I admire and want to learn
What a performance, wow
That's what I said too. It really is unique and well done.
Never knew this song sounds so awesome with bass
They sound damn crisp here. I love how Hetfield does the “sticks in me!” part in more recent years
literally every and justice for all song
''hear me you will see, bass is all i need''
Sound quality is amazing
One day I hope to have these guys perform on my show
Sure! Keep up the spirit
I want them to perform in my efficiency apartment.
I always associated this song with war. It wasn't until after 2 combat tours to Iraq that the song made more sense to me. I had a friend injured when a missile struck his humv. He was in the turret, and when the truck flipped, the turret came loose and severed his body at his waist.
James` clean tone for the intro is great
Wow 10 years already and this a still a go to classic. Metallica forever 🤘🏼🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥
"One" should be in music textbooks like Mozart , and Bach . It's on the same level.
I agree with this. Man do I ever hate the live version of the drums though. It sounds like an improvisation, whereas the studio version is so beautifully planned.
That's the problem. They can polish up the song in studio, (multiple takes.) But after 30+ years have never been able to pull it off live. Lars was totally exposed for what he is, a hack. Most overrated drummer of all time. Can't keep a beat at all. No inner metronome or meter. Kirk has been keeping these guys afloat for years. James and Lars are burned out. Trujillo never should have left Suicidal Tendencies. Sad really, used to love Metallica back in the day. That was before I knew what real musicians should sound like. Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Pantera...etc. It's too bad.
@@savoieadam for s n m 1. ABSOLUTELY NOT. For s n m 2, I definitely agree

the entrance that the bass makes transmits so much melancholy
At 6:54 James completely either forgets the words to his own song or he is speaking in"tongues"...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤘😎😝🤘
Hahahahaahaa. He did completely destroy that.
His Howard Stern therapy session must have messed him up good, lol.
I think he just realized he started to sing the second part first and it threw him off. He didn't want to lose the rythm so he just filled it with placeholders. xD
Epic recovery
He just made up mumbo-jumbo words...lol.
God I love the bass in this mix 🥰
I dont cry while listening to this song, but when I play mama said on the guitar, I cry throughout the song. Its actually sad seeing a grown man cry while singing and playing guitar with all the tears flowing from his face.
A great classic, these Howard Stern performances remind me of The Old Grey Whistle Test. Brilliant. You can feel the atmosphere in the studio
This is cool because you can actually hear Rob, unlike the original album this song was on.
Everybody criticizing Lars let's see you do better.
LOL.... I just read the comment after hearing him drum and was about to criticize him. And no, I can't do better. But I do know when drumming sounds off.
Shit maybe that’s why I love One, my dad left when I was five on fathers day weekend, my mom had to work 2 jobs for a while to support us and my brother got cancer when I was 12 which is when I first heard this song and it just instantly got my attention
Hope to have tickets for next concert
