And then 2000 came and brought along....nothing, and few artists were like, we wanna play the instruments, and the record producers were like, no no, we're not listening to that soulful crap anymore, so we're just gonna put a synth loop over here so you don't need a band, and let's alter your vocals so you don't need to know how to sing too.... I was 16 when grunge and alternative really hit in 1992. AMAZING time to be a teenager. We still haven't had any generation defining movements in rock like that. We had one in ever decade in the 60's- 90's, each decade have a unique sound and style. 30 years later its like we are still waiting on the next big thing to finally come along in Rock.
amen. it stinks that for so long he almost seem to resent his past, and loath the fans that loved his older music. You want to think that your music 'heroes' remain in that moment in time when they were knitting the fabric of your life when you first heard that song, and for a lot of us the music that 'played in the background' now 20-30 years later is a time machine pulling us back, or keeping us young, and i'm glad that he's able to come to terms with his legacy. Who knows what evils he has woven into these songs, but I'm loving listening to him play them agian with his old mates.
He's a great guitarist and had been playing the song for 15 years at that point, in addition to all the other songs he constantly plays. It's what he does for a living lol.
@@nicbongo it’s really not. Yes, it’s a simple pattern, but I implore you to attempt singing and staying in time with a picking pattern that has zero timing cues.
You took the words out of my mouth. I play guitar in an acoustic cover band and frankly was surprised how good Billy is-particularly while singing. He made it look so easy.
Mitchell Hartman was my biology lab partner in high school. He introduced me to the Pumpkins in class one day on a bootleg cassette played on his duck taped Sony Walkman. Loved them instantly and I’ve been a fan ever since, been to six of their concerts, and own all their albums and even some memorabilia too. Mitch- haven’t spoken to you since senior high but wherever you are on this globe- I do very much thank you for that day.

I'm glad I decided to go down the rabbit hole and listen to all the music I grew up on. Great music of the '90s with even greater memories associated with them.
It's a cliché at this point, but Billy really did capture the voice of a generation. I would even say the Smashing Pumpkins captivated both Gen Xers and early Millennials, I think in large part because their music didn't feel as nihilistic as other popular bands of the time. It's like Billy says to Howard, their songs evoke both optimism and melancholy, and I think that struck a deep chord within us fans. One of my absolute favorite bands of all time.
It just hits you and transports you back 25 years in time to wherever you were in life and whatever was happening at that moment. You don't even need to think about it. You just feel it, instantly. Billy's brilliant.
I grew up knowing the original bass player of the Smashing Pumpkins when we were kids in South Haven, Michigan. My mom was her private music teacher for a little while. D'arcy Wretzky was her name. We both played in the junior high string orchestra.
It's 96 summer night with friends at the lake riding around the lake at night listening to this. Our senior year, none of us knowing what life would hold. Just living in the moment. You can never ever leave, without leaving a piece of you.... Great memories...
I have to confess...I watched this because i was nostalgic for how great the song was, but i didnt think his voice would be as good. But it blew me away, his voice, this song acoustically, was amazing. ❤
I had the privilege of seeing SP (Billy and James, really) in Austin a couple of years ago. They played pretty much the entire Pumpkins library that night, and the stage elements were almost constantly moving or showing beautiful footage both old and new/original. They put on a hell of a show.

Pumpkins are a timepiece. Anytime you hear a song it immediately takes you back, much like Floyd can. Other music usually invokes memories but Pumpkins takes you on a trip through time.

Now, as an adult, I listen to them to remind myself that I'm still young at heart. The Smashing Pumpkins is the soundtrack to my life. Always has been, and always will be.
Since no one has put up the lyrics...this masterpiece deserves to be sang along: " Time is never time at all You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth And our lives are forever changed We will never be the same The more you change the less you feel Believe, believe in me, believe That life can change, that you're not stuck in vain We're not the same, we're different tonight Tonight, so bright Tonight And you know you're never sure But you're sure you could be right If you held yourself up to the light And the embers never fade in your city by the lake The place where you were born Believe, believe in me, believe In the resolute urgency of now And if you believe there's not a chance tonight Tonight, so bright tonight We'll crucify the insincere tonight We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight We'll find a way to offer up the night tonight The indescribable moments of your life tonight The impossible is possible tonight Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight "

I attended the 1996 MTV Awards where he and the Smashing Pumpkins' opened the show with this song at Radio City Music Hall. It's still one of my top music moments to have witnessed. The orchestra in back of the group was an incredible and powerful addition to the song.
Howard: "It does sound hopeful, this song. But, I do get depressed - which is cool" Almost as if inspires a feeling of melancholy...and infinite sadness?
Easily one of my favorite songs ever since hearing it almost 30 years ago I easily found so much appreciation for Billy Corgan when I watched him tell the story of writing 1979 on a late night show
Not gonna lie, tearing up. The original was a mainstay of growing up for me and it's its own thing of beauty of its own, but this hits in another way, especially with Billy grown up.
Hearing him now, I wish I'd given them more time when I was younger. Was more into Talking Heads, early Genesis, early Dire Straits, Bob Marley, JJ Cale, Pink Floyd, Early U2, The Clash, Creedence, Iron Maiden....and then the grunge era as it evolved. Billy is so talented and well spoken, I am still shocked how he was sort of over looked as an artist. He wrote so many songs for people and his own, it crazy of great he is. Listening to this simple version shows just how powerful an artist he is, makes your skin tingle its so good.
Wow. Billy sounds so melancholic, he adds not only music to the words, he adds beauty. So smooth and gentle when he sings, so delicate and pure. I would say more of him but every time I listen to this song it leaves me speechless.

" Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change the less you feel
Believe, believe in me, believe
That life can change, that you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade in your city by the lake
The place where you were born
Believe, believe in me, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance tonight
Tonight, so bright tonight
We'll crucify the insincere tonight
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
We'll find a way to offer up the night tonight
The indescribable moments of your life tonight
The impossible is possible tonight
Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight "

Billy corgan, is one of the best acoustic performance performers ever!!...that guitar sounds just amazing!!
Billy is so talented and well spoken, I am still shocked how he was sort of over looked as an artist. He wrote so many songs for people and his own, it crazy of great he is. Listening to this simple version shows just how powerful an artist he is, makes your skin tingle its so good.
This is such a great song by a great performer/songwriter.
Wow. Billy sounds so melancholic, he adds not only music to the words, he adds beauty. So smooth and gentle when he sings, so delicate and pure. I would say more of him but every time I listen to this song it leaves me speechless.
