Is there no end to Bill Burr's talents?
lmao dude no. Font even make that comparison. Burr is way more attractive. (They legit could be brothers though)
Lol
Legit clicked the link bc I thought it was him without reading the title
Fantasmister sitting in my room quietly reading comments when I suddenly burst into laughter. Well played sir.

1996- this album kept my military days happier. 2000-sitting in a van in Australia, listening to Smashing Pumpkins before a surfing session.
2020- watching this video in bed while the kids are running around and refusing to shower.
And Tonight!
an tonight!
safe to say this song stood to test of time itself.

Dam thats a great song
I wish The Smashing Pumpkins did an Unplugged set on MTV during the 90’s.
That would've been so amazing. Especially soma... disarm....mayonnaise....hummer. damn they are so amazing
Hear hear !!
Do you folks remember the Oasis unplugged set?
Would have been legendary
They blew up after.
His voice is so familiar, it's like going back to the old house, it's beautiful.
I’d love to gooooo. Bacccckkk to the old house.
Which is just an expression but also one of the most intimate and beautiful Smiths songs written 😊
Smiths reference?
I found your comment quite poetic.
I can’t think of a more beautiful way of describing this nostalgia
After hearing this I believe Mr Corgan needs to release an acoustic album of Smashing Pumpkins songs! Killer
Damn I hope you've heard another acoustic song by them, by now, bro. But they do need an acoustic album
Check out the bsides of machina! And demos from other albums! Theres a lot of acoustic versions
Oh snap that would be amazing
There are some bootlegs out there of them performing songs acoustically. There was a great one from around ‘96/‘97 or so on KROQ (I think) where they played through a bunch of songs, including ones you normally don’t hear acoustic.
edit: it was actually on an Australian radio show circa ‘95 or ‘96. Great quality & i have it on cassette somewhere amongst my collection of bootlegs from back in the day.
Some of this show might be on the Apple Music Store, but it was great to see this performance live when it happened. ua-cam.com/video/ZAALMY15X0w/v-deo.html
It’s so awesome to see billy coming to terms with how important his music is to a whole generation instead of rejecting it. Genuinely happy for him
@C he just called his song one of the greatest songs ever doesn’t sound humble to me
amen. it stinks that for so long he almost seem to resent his past, and loath the fans that loved his older music. You want to think that your music 'heroes' remain in that moment in time when they were knitting the fabric of your life when you first heard that song, and for a lot of us the music that 'played in the background' now 20-30 years later is a time machine pulling us back, or keeping us young, and i'm glad that he's able to come to terms with his legacy. Who knows what evils he has woven into these songs, but I'm loving listening to him play them agian with his old mates.
@@Charlie-yg1nm he said its a classic which it is. its not not being humble its being truthful
@@Charlie-yg1nm Friend, understand one thing. If musicians were humble, music would not exist.

Howard loves to say : ¨Chord progression ¨... it makes him feel as a musician
is there another term expressing the same idea that sounds less pompous ?
@@niconois- chord transition , chord pattern,
@@niconois Just chord I guess
Howard does play guitar. Intermediate level but still plays.
He’s a bird-tergaling-turd burglar
I have to listen to 90s music till 4 am now
Snap!!
I was 16 when grunge and alternative really hit in 1992. AMAZING time to be a teenager. We still haven't had any generation defining movements in rock like that. We had one in ever decade in the 60's- 90's, each decade have a unique sound and style. 30 years later its like we are still waiting on the next big thing to finally come along in Rock.
Me too! Mazzy Star before this.
Lately been on a bender- sp, Radiohead, stp
Candlebox : far behind
The Smashing Pumpkins will always be a part of my teenage years. I feel so lucky.
I had to re-read your comment, I thought it said you feel so yucky lol.
100%
Me too !! Music's changed sooo much !!
I felt lucky also had Queen, BEE GEES , AC/DC and the list is long and in my 30 something I had the Smashing Pumpkins.
Fuck yeah
And just like that, I’m a sophomore in high school again
Same.
Exactly...I remember when Siamese Dreams came out...
All those instruments missing and nothing is lacking . Beautiful
It is because he is a good rhythm guitar player.
Only by that fact, you can say is a well composed song.
The benefit of being a bald dude that looks like a vampire is that he hasn't aged in 20 years
Yeah, he has.
I remember thinking back then that Billy may still be around 25 years from now, but its really shaky on the other grunge bands. Sure enough all the suicidal sounding artists from then are now dead but Billy Corgan is still going strong..
Except this was 8 years ago... lol
The world is a vampire :)
Dude, the whole world is a vampire :D
Hearing him talk then sing is a drastic change
His normal voice is very interesting
But that’s for every singer doe
Its like how Gerard Way talks so quite and sings so awesome
That's the fun thing about being a singer. However I disagree with this example Jack
As a kid when they were huge I assumed he’s be a very strange guy. Yet he’s one of the most “regular” Rock Stars. Away from music, just a guy who likes to arch a lot of sports.
This band will remain in a very special place in my heart, forever.
@ He isn't the best singer, but it's so synonymous with the incredible music attached to it that I wouldn't want anyone else singing
facts
Me too *tear*
Same here
Folks, we've gotta get this man into the damn Hall of Fame.
His voice instantly puts me back in the early 90's.
I LOVE HIS VOICE!!!!
Time warp
30 years in seconds.
beautifully written and played, the 90s was such a hopeful time in a way
It was
A decade is what you make of it.
And then 2000 came and brought along....nothing, and few artists were like, we wanna play the instruments, and the record producers were like, no no, we're not listening to that soulful crap anymore, so we're just gonna put a synth loop over here so you don't need a band, and let's alter your vocals so you don't need to know how to sing too....
And all the boys and girls were mesmerized...
The songs of my touth
Despite all my rage I’m still just a rate in a cage ;-) On the whole, not sure I’d call SP songs optimistic/hopeful!
Dude is a musical genius.
Flawless guitar. That wasn’t an easy picking job. He sang flawlessly while he played flawlessly. Damn impressive. 👏
He's a great guitarist and had been playing the song for 15 years at that point, in addition to all the other songs he constantly plays. It's what he does for a living lol.
Agreed
Billy is a great guitarist, but this is actually quite simple plucking. Easy for him, especially considering he wrote it.
@@nicbongo it’s really not. Yes, it’s a simple pattern, but I implore you to attempt singing and staying in time with a picking pattern that has zero timing cues.
You took the words out of my mouth. I play guitar in an acoustic cover band and frankly was surprised how good Billy is-particularly while singing. He made it look so easy.
This guy should start a band
Like really? Haven't you heard of Smashing Pumpkins

A very underrated guitar player.
I cried the first time I learned how to play this on guitar. Such a beautiful song and marker of time
Crazy Smashing Pumpkins never did MTV Unplugged.
that is true I wish they did
Probably bc they constantly did acoustics
They did VH1 Storytellers in 2000. It was in the same vein as Unplugged.
Yes I wish they would've
I know such a tragedy
I’m literally in tears. This is so beautiful. 2020 anyone???
Singing along in my basement and totally teared up during that last verse...I feel you.
I'm here one day after you. This song means a lot to me also.
🙋
I decided to come back to this performance in 2020. There's literally not a day that goes by where I don't listen to some form of Billy....
I'm glad I decided to go down the rabbit hole and listen to all the music I grew up on. Great music of the '90s with even greater memories associated with them.
If your life can change then you're not stuck in vain. Love that line
Melancholy was one of my favorite albums of all time. Almost 30 years later it's still as good as the first time i heard it.
One of the few artists I can really enjoy acoustically too. Probably because the songs are deep and well written.
omg Karl hiii
Absolutely and he has a voice that does both well, and is an incredible songwriter
I love Billy, I love Karl

Well said
It's a cliché at this point, but Billy really did capture the voice of a generation. I would even say the Smashing Pumpkins captivated both Gen Xers and early Millennials, I think in large part because their music didn't feel as nihilistic as other popular bands of the time.
It's like Billy says to Howard, their songs evoke both optimism and melancholy, and I think that struck a deep chord within us fans.
One of my absolute favorite bands of all time.
We know the world is full of sadness and sometimes horror. We also know a little bit of light always helps.

Also a pivotal non-Grunge sound from the non-West.
I grew up knowing the original bass player of the Smashing Pumpkins when we were kids in South Haven, Michigan. My mom was her private music teacher for a little while. D'arcy Wretzky was her name. We both played in the junior high string orchestra.
l though that darcy was self taught, according to herself
Wow that's crazy, it's sad how shes not part of the band anymore and all the bad blood between em
Very nice
That’s awesome! 🥁💜🤙
holy shit dude. any idea how is she now btw? shes the only one from the original SP thats like off the radar.
Howard: "It does sound hopeful, this song. But, I do get depressed - which is cool"
Almost as if inspires a feeling of melancholy...and infinite sadness?
I've had a crush on Billy Corgan since the 90's. He still has my heart today.
The emotions that welled up just in that first 30 or so seconds of playing. I could hear the orchestra in my head. Man, what an amazing song.
I'm in college again... "A generational marker" indeed this song is...
Let it be known: this man is a guitar legend.
An absolute American music genius who in my estimation has not been given the respect and credit he deserves for his accomplishments as composer and musician.
This is the song that makes me wish I was around in the 90’s
2022 still listening to this song
OMG...I'm 43 and haven't heard this in years, and he is breathtaking and tear-jerking!!!
You look 23 and yes I feel the emotions as well!!!
Born in 77 and SP is still my all time favorite band
Facts
Mitchell Hartman was my biology lab partner in high school. He introduced me to the Pumpkins in class one day on a bootleg cassette played on his duck taped Sony Walkman. Loved them instantly and I’ve been a fan ever since, been to six of their concerts, and own all their albums and even some memorabilia too. Mitch- haven’t spoken to you since senior high but wherever you are on this globe- I do very much thank you for that day.
Anybody else think the second verse is one of the greatest verses of all time?
Hahahahah. No.

Thats on you, these are great lyrics so it is impactful or has a special meaning for u, then it is!
@DevilMask Media LOL! You’re an asshole, a funny asshole though
We are all blessed Howard that he did this song cuz he killed it. I love this version
The tone of that acoustic is PERFECT!
honestly it's not a very easy song to play without your guitar detuning
Smashing Pumpkins owned the 90’s. 💚
Chicago’s very own Smashing Pumpkins. One of the greatest bands and greatest songs of all time. Incredible.
He just put an ad out for a guitarist.
Goddammit, Billy is great.
My funeral song and I want it loud as f,ck !! BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN THIS !! BILLY THANKS FROM SCOTLAND IF YOU READ THIS 👊🏴
Since no one has put up the lyrics...this masterpiece deserves to be sang along:
" Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change the less you feel
Believe, believe in me, believe
That life can change, that you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade in your city by the lake
The place where you were born
Believe, believe in me, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance tonight
Tonight, so bright tonight
We'll crucify the insincere tonight
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
We'll find a way to offer up the night tonight
The indescribable moments of your life tonight
The impossible is possible tonight
Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight "
Not "...a piece of youth..." but "...a piece of you..."!
Thanks Bro
Thank you
Tetta Zwo
I really think it's *youth* ....you can hear the "th" trailing in low voice if you listen carefully
Thanks bud
Billy Corgan is a incredible musician. All of his songs hit my heart.
"its almost more important than any other song I've ever written. its like a generational marker. It reminds people of times"
They must have edited out the bit where Stern asked about 1979.
It just hits you and transports you back 25 years in time to wherever you were in life and whatever was happening at that moment. You don't even need to think about it. You just feel it, instantly. Billy's brilliant.
Where did those 25 years go?
So true .
I remember friends and things i did that id otherwise have forgotten because of this song
I find it pretty insane that he can play that picking part of the song and sing at the same time like it’s nothing, I’ll never be able to do that .
Is Billy Corgan a vampire? He doesn't age!
...sent to drain.....
Takes me back to the 90's when I teenager
This song has helped me through so many tough times. Thank you, Billy.
Hell of an album
By far my favorite Billy song. He is so friggin talented.
" The impossible is possible tonight "
Hearing this I am transported back into my 87 Dodge Daytona driving home from college late in the evening.
How does this song not have 3 billion likes?
Best version of this song, ever. Thank you Mr. Stern for making this viewable for everyone.
Listen to Tonight reprise version 1
It's 96 summer night with friends at the lake riding around the lake at night listening to this. Our senior year, none of us knowing what life would hold. Just living in the moment. You can never ever leave, without leaving a piece of you.... Great memories...
Taken of course from "Mellon collie and the infinite sadness" album.. Which is a timeless classic.
I've heard a lot about how much of a jerk Billy Corgan is, but to me just seems like a very realistic person who knows his talents and gets shit done.
Cold chills and crying at 4'am...pretty powerful...where's the time go...
So true. My time of change was the 90s
He has got the sweetest & coolest voice i ever did hear
The man is a god!
i still cant get over this
The greatest living American songwriter, Billy Corgan
Slow down
Perhaps the greatest song ever written. Dark, hopeful and longing all at the same time.
His voice has definitely improved with age. Nicely done. We need an acoustic only album.
The tonight tonight single has many acoustic songs. Would definitely recommend you check it out :)
Improved ??? Brother his voice doesn't need improving , EVER
A fucking masterpiece Billy
get a human who looks at you the way Howard Stern looks at Billy Corgan
10th grade, Biology, Mitch Hartman , my lab partner, let me listen to this on his Walkman. Yup, that’s where I was.
His voice is better live than on record. Fantastic
I agree an acoustic album would be fantastic. His songs remind me of the innocence of my youth and the carefree times in the CITY BY THE LAKE where I also was born .. Chicago !
I had the privilege of seeing SP (Billy and James, really) in Austin a couple of years ago. They played pretty much the entire Pumpkins library that night, and the stage elements were almost constantly moving or showing beautiful footage both old and new/original. They put on a hell of a show.
Was it the 30th anniversary your? Because that was an absolutely amazing production
Pumpkins are a timepiece. Anytime you hear a song it immediately takes you back, much like Floyd can. Other music usually invokes memories but Pumpkins takes you on a trip through time.
Billy is truly a musical genius. Unbelievable amount of variation in his song structure and vocals. My favorite musician and singer.
Absolutely Amazing. Better than I remember and so original.
Howard has become one of the best interviewers!
back when music was awesome.....my god where did real music go??? Bravo Billy.
howard is one of the few interviewer guys that always asks interesting questions to musicians and he seems genuinely interested
I'm more of a '1979' guy, but this was great.
Crushenator500 1979 is my jam
lmao what does that even mean
Same. This song is great, but the nostalgic feeling that they mention is better encapsulated by 1979, imo. At least for me.
Zach Go 1979 is a Smashing Pumpkins song.
I was born in 1979. That song is my anthem.
bring back the 90s ..where my youth lives
Can we get a round of applause to the sound engineers on this one??? That is magnificent quality!
This is simply fucking unnecessarily beautiful. I need this version on my Spotify playlist haha
Holy What... This is the only time I understand this song. This was amazing to see.
“Generational marker” describes this song well. I hear this song and I am transported.
Love this song.. brings me back to my teens..
Me too!!! It's impossible to listen to any song from that album and be transported to where you were and who you were at that time.
Just thinking the same :)
In all my time, I've never listened to the lyrics to this.
Until today.
Beautiful.
Romanticism revisited in the 90s.
Not romantic, which'd be dull
Lucly you that had this surprise un these shallow times
An ancient American folk song. ❤️
I always stop to enjoy Smashing Pumpkins! instead of smelling the flowers I rock out with memories from the past!
That acoustic guitar is one of the best sounding I've ever heard.
Looks like a Taylor. Corgan is a gearhead (it's really interesting to hear him talk about gear and production) so he knows what he's about. But an important part of any great sounding guitar is the human attached to it.
Deceptively complex song to play solo and with an acoustic. What a powerful performance.
My heart needed this rn.
This takes me back to Long Island's Jones Beach. Feeling is overwhelming. Best year of my life.
Easily one of my favorite songs ever since hearing it almost 30 years ago
I easily found so much appreciation for Billy Corgan when I watched him tell the story of writing 1979 on a late night show
This songs are timeless....miss the 90‘ s
even his talking voice is great
Goosebumps
So many years later, and it’s “relevance remains…” Phenomenal version. Thanks Billy & Howard
I have tears in my eyes. This is and always will be an homage to youth. Xoxox God bless you Billy. 🥰
