At first I think Joker was needling Gambol, trying to disrespect him and anger him, because he called Joker 'freak' and 'crazy'...but imo Joker didn't really decide to kill Gambol until Gambol said he would put a contract out on Joker...That's when Joker pointed at him (like a gun), which was already a silent indicator he was putting his own, private contract out on Gambol...then the way Joker glares at him as he backs out the door...like "You're a dead man"...Joker marked Gambol for death then and there, with his fingers and his eyes

This scene is genuinely amazing, because it partly feels like a comedy skit with some of the Joker's lines and deliveries while conveying extremely important information. His declaration of never doing something for free is simple and true, but in such a serious meeting it catches you off-guard, and when he responding with how much he wants to get paid, instead of giving a specific number like 10 million or something generic like that, he just responds with a blanket statement of "Half," which is so vague yet incredibly specific at the same time that it's difficult to know if he's serious, but you know he's asking for half of everyone's pay, an extremely ballsy move that exudes confidence. It really goes to show that while he did plan, he was basically winging most of his actions like a wild card. It's rare to see someone *_that_* cunning and unhinged in movies these days.

@@2012thefreshprince Oh, I didn't catch that. True colors is especially ironic since Joker doesn't show the true color of his face. Is this a slight dig at his race? It very well could be. Also, after what that guy said about wanting half, it makes me wonder how much half is. Are we talking 40 million? How much was that pile of money he burns later.

    • @2012thefreshprince
      @2012thefreshprince 3 місяці тому +1

@@Chimchimchu "half" probably means half of the mafia's entire treasure which sums up to billions of dollars. In regards with the term "color", always keep in mind that there must be some reason why they casted an African American as Gambol, and why the camera leans on him while the word color is being mentioned and how furious it made him. It was a bad choice of words that eventually made Gambol put a contract on the joker's head.

I saw this in theaters on day 1 and I vividly remember feeling a tiny bit nervous and anxious at some points of this film just because Heath’s performance was so good. The way he said “No I’m not” was a little chilling and it was small, almost unnoticeable moments like that that just gave soooo much more depth to his character. One of the greatest villain performances of all time hands down.

To GIVE your honest work is a privilege.
How many has a special skill they've developed for years others want and most admire, and they can honestly give it away.
Not to be kind, not to be a nice person to ones friend but straight out give it away out of good heart that you are.
A nice guy is asked for change and offer some, a good person gives without needing a question cause he already knows the answer, and he's the only one who needs to know.

While Heath is clearly the star of this scene, it's worth pointing out the acting of Maroni, Chechen, and Gambol.
2:50 onwards, Maroni giving his best poker face, twirling his fingers around, trying to determine if he should take the Joker seriously.
Chechen staring blankly, genuinely intrigued and open to the Joker.
Gambol enraged, but a little dart of his eyes hints he knows the Joker is right, and Batman has crippled the mob.
    Perfectly cast and performed scene.

I love how he even looks physically unsteady and unstable in his mannerisms and motions. It's remarkable how accurately his mannerisms resemble psychomotor agitation found in mania, psychosis, and methamphetamine intoxication. I have bipolar 1 and when I am in psychosis and/or mania, I am constantly moving like this, almost like my whole body has a tremor especially after I've been up for a few days. I'm also six years in recovery from addiction and I can say that high doses of stimulants do the same thing. It is always possible that he just took amphetamines before this scene, but I think that he wouldn't be able to speak this slowly or do this good of a job. The world wasn't ready for Heath and especially this performance. Fuck it, I'm not even ready for this performance even today, and I literally been psychotic before LMAO

It ties in beautifully to his entire point in the movie, that anyone can be turned, can be deemed “crazy” - they just need a little push. And I haven’t seen this ever being mentioned, but I think the Joker doesn’t want to be alone(Batman even tells him he is at the end). He doesn’t like the idea of people potentially being more like Batman than people being more like him, so he goes to great lengths to prove that they are more like him, and when he’s proven to be wrong at the end just look at the sadness and disappointment in his face

Joker believes that morals and rules are mere excuses for people's hypocrisy when they eventually go against it for any reason. That ultimately it is a dog eat dog world. He goes to prove it when he threatens to blow up a hospital if the guy threatening to expose Batman's identity isn't killed, and when he offers one of the 2 boats to be spared if one blows up the others. Batman saw that Joker wants to prove that deep down everyone is a 'freak' and a monster like him.

The way he locks onto Gambols eyes and the way he repeats it was always my favourite part of the whole movie. It's subtle, but I know that exact look - when he says "im not" he intends for it to be taken with more weight, so when they all continue to laugh it become personal for him. The glare demands Gambol lock eyes with him for him to repeat the statement again, clear as day, no bullshit or confusion.
The way he delivers those lines makes me think that - to heath's joker - the assertion that he's crazy is something from his past that contributed to him being who he is now. It obviously means a lot to the character, not only that he is not called crazy, but that no one walks away with any sort of misconception that he is. Its more important to him than money, catching batman, the guy he just killed... id go as far as to say that being acknowledged as "not crazy" is more important to Joker than anything else in that room at the moment - one has to wonder what would have happened if Gambol had not done Joker the respect of meeting his gaze as he repeated himself. 🤔

Joker used it as a means to an end, because his ultimate goal (he tells this to batman) is to literally play this ''game'' with batman for forever, or until Batman finally breaks his only rule. His sole purpose is to push Batman right up to the edge, and test him at every turn. He gets the mob on his side by saying he will kill Batman, but never has the intention to.

You don't just wander onto the stage or in front of the camera and begin saying lines. You design. You create inner life. You decide how your character reacts to different stressors. You listen. You DO. Even though I find Nolan's Batman movies too dark for my taste, much preferring Burton's style, Ledger stands out beautifully in this film, stealing the camera in every scene. Bravo, Ledger. That rhythmic beat in the background getting louder towards the end may not seem much but its actually adding so much tension to the scene. Brilliant!!!

He gets offended whenever he's called "freak" or "crazy" because he genuinely feels like he's the only sane one there.

@Brayan Carmona Are you serious? He kills people because he wants to mess with the natural order of things. This version of the Joker is an anarchistic madman, his goal is to destroy the foundations of society so that people can all be who they really are. Remove the rules and laws. Every man for himself, and dog eat dog. He’s not fighting for a greater good. He’s fighting to create a world without structure or governing bodies. A world as crazy and unpredictable as himself.
