I think it's important to pay attention to every character. This is why Dark Knight stands out from other superhero movies (though it's not off-the-comic) where only the prime characters are under spotlight. It's essentially the atmosphere that makes it great. There are subtle instances to look for such as Rachel warning Batman not to take off his mask at 4:01.
Moist Mail Man Batman and Bruce Wayne are two separate people in his mind. When he realized what was going on, Bruce jumped right into his alter-ego. Or actually correction, I should say Batman jumped OUT of his alter-ego. Like they pointed in the Nolan trilogy a lot, Bruce is the mask. The Bat is who he really is.

Heath Ledger created a Joker that will never be surpassed. Every viewing of this film reveals more magic of Ledgers incredible craft. His study of The Joker literally consumes him.
I don't think heath ledger will be surpassed, however, Joachim Pheonix is on par with Heath Ledger on his version of Joker if you want me to be honest with you
I'm torn on how to reply to this... I've always felt that Nicholson's Joker was better, never once thinking differently. But that is from the stance of comparing to the source material. Ledger's Joker is kind of a Joker/Riddler hybrid, whereas Nicholson's Joker is more of a pure Joker. But that isn't meant to be a knock against Ledger! He portrays and acts the character as it's written and directed. And in THAT regards, you are correct in that his performance as Joker here will likely never be surpassed.
Happens a lot in this movie. Like Joker asking Batman if he knows how he got his scars when clearly he was in no position to tell the story, just to set up 'I know how you got these'. It's like the director and screenwriters knew how much good cinematography and lines can get you away with and just stopped caring about logic or consistency.
@@Uxoriouswidow What do you mean he was in no position to tell the story? Batman was pinned down and unable to move, and Joker was just about to detonate the bombs.
Both the "how I got this scar" stories of Joker were actually a way to connect with his victim before he would carve their face. He would (correctly) guess a thing about victim, quickly make up a story that would be something victim could relate, something which would make victim sympathize Joker. In Gambol's case he guessed his father was a wife beater and would've tortured Gambol, in this old Businessman case he was about to tell a story how he hated his father. But then he switched to Rachael, making up story how much he loved his wife but his wife didn't approve his act of love.
I’ve noticed that both of his scars are different from each other, so my theory is that both stories he told did happen which led to him “always smiling “. His dad cut one side of his mouth and he did the other side himself for his wife We never get the 3rd story so who knows 🤷🏽♂️
I love how Maggie expressed herself through the body language. The way she tried to avoid Joker, keeps closing her eyes, contracting her shoulders. It all shows how Rachel was afraid of Joker, but was also trying to stay calm and stand up for all of those in the situation
Fun fact, the actor was actually terrified of Heath, and the "look at me" from Heath was improv because Rachel's actor was actually twisting around in disgust
1:33 that's Senator Patrick Leahy (VT), who said it was real fear in his eyes from Ledger's performance. Fun fact, he's a huge Batman nerd and has had a cameo in every Batman movie since Batman Forever
He doesn't just tell different stories about the scars every time, he makes them up on the spot to fit the current circumstances. In this case making her think that she reminds him of his ex-girlfriend who betrayed him, plus the added bonus of making himself sound insane to scare her even more.
Goes to show how mentally insane he is. He carved his own face and makes up a story every time. That’s why I prefer this joker over the dceu joker. Dceu joker feels like an edgy bully while nolan’s joker feels like an actual deranged psycho.
And whenever he attempts to kick the shit out of Batman but fails so a blade comes through his foot as he administers the finale kick then laughs when Batman yells🤣🤣
Now that I'm older, I am seeing more details that I never saw when I was younger. The camera work when Joker's on screen is shaky, whereas when Batman is on screen, the camera work is stable and steady. Nolan is a genius when it comes to cinematography
heath ledger nailed the Joker, look at the walk at 3:46 it might be short but the detail makes it looks like the Joker got transported from a comic to a live action

1:35 I love how Joker reacts in this scene. It feels like it’s the only scene of Joker being genuine, besides the conversations with Batman. You can tell most of the things he says are “Jokes” from how he got different versions of the story how he got the scars. Tho I think this scene tells he actually got abused by his father in the past. The rare moment of Joker giving away kind of confirmed information to us
I love how awkward The Joker gets when he realizes that the party has a ton of people and everyone is clueless. His big entrance lost all of its momentum and he starts casually asking random people. haha
He grabs the glass, spilling the entire drink in the process - and still takes a swig. Sums up the entire nature of the character in one action. Always my favourite part of this scene.
One thing I absolutely love in this scene aside from the acting (casting for this film was immaculate) is the cinematography The camera movements are just amazing
I noticed the Joker would change his story everytime. But it took me about five viewings to realize he also changes based on who that person is and the first impression he gets of them. Gamble- He was the only one in the meeting room that was visibly upset and directly threatened the Joker. Hence the story of the abusive father and the "why so serious?" line since Gamble was "serious". Rachel- When she sees the Joker, shes quiet, shocked isnt smiling. Hence the story of about him having a wife, similar in looks and him trying to make her smile. "Lets put a smile on that face." So it makes me wonder what story Joker would of come up for Batman at the construction site when he asked if he wanted to know about his scars.
I imagine he has two different stories, one for males and one for females, since the joker was about to tell the senator a story about his father, and he already told it to gamble. So, if joker’s gonna tell his story to Batman, I imagine it would also be the father story
Nah the goal of the Joker is to show that everyone is like him. So he makes different stories based on who he’s talking to to show that they could be just like him. Like the story he told gambol kinda sounds like the stereotypical gangster backstory
I always wondered what happened after this scene, like did they all just leave the party? did they kill everyone? did they decide that they weren’t looking for harvey dent anymore? did they join in the party and dance the night away? we’ll never know
I love the scene of Bruce effortlessly dispatching that one thug. Reminds everyone he doesn't need the suit to kick ass and the disassembling the gun immediately after with such ease just further highlights how skilled and dangerous he is.
However, I wonder, wouldn't this specific thug wake up remembering he got beaten up by Bruce Wayne in a very Batman-like fashion...? Wouldn't that raise at least SOME questions?
The fact that Heath Ledger had Michael Caine mesmerised in this scene so much so that Michael forgot his lines is a great testament to the insane talent that Heath Ledger possessed!
1:08 - 1:14 the way Bruce takes out one of the thugs with his own weapon, dismantles his gun and then casually walks off is very James Bond and badass.
@ricky gervais Sometimes getting real reactions is better. Another great example of this was the end of Dead Man's Chest with the Barbossa reveal. The cast had no idea that Geoffry Rush would be coming down those stairs. They thought it was going to be Zoe Saldana. The look of stunned shock in that scene from the main cast was the casts' actual reaction.
The way the camera moves and syncs with the music is just pure perfection from Nolan and his crew. It allows Heath to play the Joker in such an effective and demonstrative way that trumps basically any other movie villain I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing
i just noticed at 1:41 he loudly slaps his hand on the table to search for his knife, only to realize it's in his jacket lol. it's so casual but adds to the realism
What’s scary is that he did. He met Rachel here and quickly learnt that Batman loves her. So he later chose to kidnap her and fuck Batman and Harvey dent over.

He grabs the glass, spilling the entire drink in the process - and still takes a swig. Sums up the entire nature of the character in one action. Always my favourite part of this scene.
One thing I absolutely love in this scene aside from the acting (casting for this film was immaculate) is the cinematography
The camera movements are just amazing
I noticed the Joker would change his story everytime. But it took me about five viewings to realize he also changes based on who that person is and the first impression he gets of them.
Gamble- He was the only one in the meeting room that was visibly upset and directly threatened the Joker. Hence the story of the abusive father and the "why so serious?" line since Gamble was "serious".
Rachel- When she sees the Joker, shes quiet, shocked isnt smiling. Hence the story of about him having a wife, similar in looks and him trying to make her smile. "Lets put a smile on that face."
So it makes me wonder what story Joker would of come up for Batman at the construction site when he asked if he wanted to know about his scars.
The truth, probably. He sees Batman as his complete opposite, so why would he lie to him? 🤷♂️ just a theory
I imagine he has two different stories, one for males and one for females, since the joker was about to tell the senator a story about his father, and he already told it to gamble. So, if joker’s gonna tell his story to Batman, I imagine it would also be the father story
It would've been some story that connected to Batman.
Imagine if he told Batman that he killed his parents.
Nah the goal of the Joker is to show that everyone is like him. So he makes different stories based on who he’s talking to to show that they could be just like him. Like the story he told gambol kinda sounds like the stereotypical gangster backstory
