He could have easily shot him first then the family, hell he literally had EVERY reason to, but even in the end he still in a sense was respectful and granted him his last request despite what he did to his own family.
2:13 I like this little detail of him letting the maid live, showcasing that he does have some kind of code. And she never once screams or tries to warn the family. Even her expression is one of understanding, like she knows this happening for a reason.
Quite sad that most men like this cartel boss commit such acts of depravity but then will be in utter shock when their turn comes. Goes to show no matter how evil someone is they will also cry for mercy in the end.
I remember reading about the men that survived the USS Indianapolis sinking saying that “evil, good, atheists, believers, teachers, or hippies, everyone prayed to God that day.” So most of the time there’s definitely truth to what you say. Everyone fears death in some way.
@@travisvanalst4698 I think that's more the fear of a horrible death at a relatively young age, rather than the fear of death. You're more likely to get "oh no, please god, save me, im not supposed to die today, i have young kids, please god save me, dont let me die like this" from someone on a sinking ship or bobbing around in the sea in a lifejacket or lifeboat than from someone aged 95 at the natural end of their life surrounded by their family in their room in an old people's home where they'd lived for the past 5 years.
5:59 This moment is so powerful. He recognizes the horrible pain he once felt on the face of the man he has come to kill. Amazing direction, acting and everything else. Everything in this film came together perfectly.
And that he probably intended to actually let him finish his meal to let it soak even longer, but then the last bit of humanity in him makes him not want to be excessively cruel.
I love that look so much….. and you can actually FEEL that he absolutely HATES that look, it’s like he was looking in a mirror and used his gun to shoot out and destroy the reflection
Yeah it's about time Julio César Cedillo get the attention he deserved. Kudos to the director for choosing him to play kingpin Fausto Alcaron. The guy looks the part, plays the part, and that unforgettable sheer look of horror right after the wife and kids got shot. It looks very realistic. Benecio did well too. I bet he improvised that line "go ahead... finish your meal", just to remind the audience that the character he played is a killer but he had also had a soft spot.
That deep breath Alejandro takes just after he kills the family was a nice touch by Benicio. As if the killing was cathartic to his well being. "Well, that's done. Time to savor this."
I don’t think so, at least not entirely. He may have felt guilt and pain from going through that again. He knows the family is innocent like his was. I’d imagine (as if I really could) that it’s a mix of that guilt that he’s pushing past, and a deep need for justice understandably corrupted by selfish revenge that prioritizes wanting to share his misery with another who deserves it over the lives of more innocent people. Ideally the family would be informed in detail of all the evil deeds their father did, and then somehow have a fair trial to be properly convicted and swiftly sentenced to an execution with his family in attendance to see justice in action. Obviously wasn’t going to happen, but at least tell the kids and wife right there before taking the father away to be dealt with and leave them to grieve with the remainder of their lives.
I don't think he savored it enough to be honest. 1 shot and a final headshot not 10 seconds after is way too quick. Fausto's panic showed he's capable of real fear underneath the facade of overconfidence from so much power and money. That means he's capable of suffering as well.
@@regenosis well the lady in the house saw him there and he also just murked a bunch of people. no telling the schedule, he didnt really have time to kick back and watch ol dude freak out. he let it sink in just enough, then gut shot him to inflict a ton of physical pain, then executed him and left.
@@homedepotindustrialfan936I think you both are partially correct; but he also did it to keep control of himself. To force himself NOT to continue and just immediately kill the boss too. His wrath was so strong it brought him all the way to that moment; so he wanted to savor it (relief), felt slight guilt of innocent kids dying again (like his daughter) and getting his emotions back under control (to give the cartel boss time to feel his pain) before the coups de gras.
Love the small details. The decision to shoot the driver off screen for some reason just worked, and the way Alejandro relaxes and spits when he knows the hard work is done. Superb stuff

The fact that he didn't kill the maid means he never intended to kill her or else he would have done it immediately. The thermal scanners were just telling him how many life signs were still in the house. Once he saw the maid and the 4 people at the dinner table he knew he could relax.
This scene is the only reason I’m happy they didn’t use captions in this film. I am film obsessed and will pause and rewind to make sure I catch every word and every moment of every movie. You don’t need to know Spanish to understand what is said in this ultimate scene. CHILLING.
You could tell by the smirk on Fausto's face that he thought he had a chance to talk his way out of it as if it was a regular sunday for him. All the while having dinner with his family thinks it increases that probability he could instill some remorse on Alejandro. Not knowing that the only thing keeping him alive is the lies Alejandro have yet to hear from him, or at least, he expected him to spit out..
He didn't lie. He did in fact learn how from Americans who went down there to start the operations in the first place. Almost as if some Agency that Centralized Intelligence was doing it. Funny thing is that 2 is *extremely* competent, it's a great thriller, but it's following 1 - probably one of the very best movies of the teens, with Deakins at the very height of his powers.
Benicio del Toro is a powerful actor - just nuances and light twitches from his face are enough to send chills. He didn't flinch when he shot the family in cold blood. Julio Cesar Cedillo's acting once his family were shot point blank is just so full of angst and unimaginable pain. Amazing acting. This scene alone gives me chills and the feel of the pain of loss of deeply loved ones in a split second. It depicts the fragility of human life and how cause and consequence deeply affect our emotions to the point revenge in a tit-for-tat blurs lines of what's "right" when everything is so wrong. If someone chopped off my wife's head and threw my daughter into a tub of acid, there is no more right or wrong in retaliation; it just is. No justifications can right the killing of the innocent in retaliation and yet the world is full of greys because of consequences from cause. It's not enough that a murderer be sent to jail to live out his life behind bars for any gruesome crime he committed in atrocity. That's too easy. If we spend our life hurting and killing others, it will come back full circle, one way or the other. No one ever gets off scott-free.
@mseeross those kids were only gonna follow in their dads footsteps and if not, live a life of luxury and never make a positive impact on anyone but themselves. Maybe. Lol.
The main reason i enjoyed these movies so much is that they were real in every aspect. Nothing was sugar coated or edit diluted because it was too violent. I hope theres a third one and soon.
I like it how cocky he is until his family is killed!!!!!!! And the wife knew they were gonna die as soon as he said "don't forget about my daughter"!!!!!!!!!
That's the comment I came looking for. She still had a tiny ray of hope for the boys until the daughter was mentioned. Her acting was phenomenal. They all were.
I think that even his kids understood that their father killed his little girl and when he had the audacity to say it wasn't personal. They knew they were goners. I loved this one better than the other one.
But still the sequel is alot better than it has any right to be. It was directed by different director, it had very big boots to fill and this isnt exactly a movie which was made with sequel in mind. It could have sucked so bad. I was actually very pleasantly surprised. That sequel doesnt tarnish the original.
Taylot Sheridan wrote this and deserves a lot of credit for this amazing film. Of course, the direction and acting is superb. For me the most chilling part of the scene is when he kills the two boys and his wife and then lets him feel the anguish prior to executing him. He could have tortured them.
Once again, I don't care how many people kill. But the lighting in this scene all the way through is excellent.Whoever did that stuff did a good job.I love it
This scene is something special. It puts the viewer in a position to contemplate whether killing the other family members was totally unnecessary and results in a feeling of horror, or rather completely justified and results in a feeling of satisfaction. Or, most likely, a combination of multiple emotions. It challanges you to grapple with the concepts of revenge and morality, and ultimately, attempt to define "justice" by your own standards.
Completely justified; he took his life and he returned in kind. Only thing is he didn't let him live with that pain unlike himself. Yes he got his revenge but he still has that pain of losing his family.
@Blacstatic Yeah, but what did the children do to deserve death? I can understand the wife dying because she is a grown adult willingly married to a cartel boss. But the kids are just kids. They had no control over who their dad was. That's the only thing I can't get behind. Kill the cartel boss, kill the wife, sure. But the kids don't deserve to be killed.
If he let the kids walk out, they would come after him for revenge. Cleaned up the entire family one night. Trust me, these boys wouldn’t forget about who killed their father.
@@liambarreto1020 I dont think it was about that. It was about inflicting the same pain alejandro went through onto him before he kills him. It was out of vengeance and satisfaction not fear of retaliation
The writing is impeccable. Switching between English + Spanish and the language barrier of the two boys just builds the suspense because of what they can and cannot understand them saying. What a movie!!
Someone pointed out in another version of this video that, if you follow where his gun points, you can tell the order he killed them in, and why. The mother died first, so she wouldn't have to see what happened to her children. The younger boy died next, before he could realise what was happening, and the eldest was last.
No, it was in that order because it was an economy of motion. Less movement between shots, and swinging from right to left. A natural direction for a right-handed shooter considering recoil management, etc. If he had wanted to inflict major emotional damage, he would have shot the children first, then hesitated, then shot the mother so she could also feel his pain. In a way, he spared her.
@@johngreenhorn8853 You're right. Just a movie. Things like this would never happen in real life. The kingpin sitting at the table never would have reached his position of power by having lax security

“Now finish your meal.” Just as Alejandro had to every single day. Im concerned if I’m wired wrong but I found satisfaction in Fausto seeing his family die. Not in his family dying. Fausto looked at him with a face that said “you won’t do anything.” And as soon as Alejandro mentioned his daughter, Fausto’s wife was the only one who understood their family was going to be killed. It was only after Alejandro went through with it that Fausto felt that shock. It was as if all that power had gone to his head up until that moment when he realized he was touchable.
I also think the wife's reaction was because it's moments like this where she's confronted with what her "beloved" does every day. Ordering children and wives to be slaughtered and disposed in acid. The illusion of a man she can love disappears and she's forced to face what life she chose. Then yea, she probably adds 2 and 2 together and realises there ain't no getting out of this one.
You are naive if you think a cartel wife does not know what his husband does, she cried because all of a sudden the same was going to haapen to them @@NtoTheM
I realize now this was Alejandro's mission right from the start of the movie, not the other stuff. He was savouring this moment when he accepted the mission.
This was my 2nd Denis Villeneuve film and after this scene is when he jumped up into being one of my all time favorite directors. What a masterclass on all fronts here, the way he lets the characters and film itself say so much without using many words is amazing.
Benicio del Toro gives an acting masterclass here. The realization that he lost the don the moment he killed the wife and kids. He couldn't do anything else to him, and he wasn't satisfied yet.
It's funny how the word "masterclass" is getting so overused these days and just thrown around like people actually think they know the fucking meaning of this overused word
Awesome movie with incredible performances, especially Benicio del Toro!! Glad to see from the comments below that so many others are still watching this incredible film in 2023!!! It truly is one for the ages!!!
Truth my guy I saw this a while ago and thought holy crap he actually did it, I was hoping he would do it but also not at the same time, but you have to remember if the sons lived they would have come after them, what he did made him feel what he felt and he completely deserves it what his boys got was tame compared to the torture this man put Bencios daughter through.
When you are so evil, but there is someone out there that becomes 10 folds as evil as you because of you, looking for you, found you, and in front of you with your most beloved family...so chilling
Alarcon had the nerve to try and explain his nature to Alejandro, like it's going to null the fact that he had Alejandro 's wife and daughter brutally executed. Phenomenal acting by Del Toro and Cedillo!
To say a man whose wife was beheaded and the daughter was dissolved in acid to say it was nothing personal is the stupidest thing you can say. If he had apologized, he might have been able to save his children.
@@e.350 Yep, to suggest it was just business makes his wife and daughter seem even more expendable, like a couple of statements on a balance sheet of a much larger operation. Dude watched The Godfather too many times.
the best part is, the drug lord thought that alejandro was just gonna do him and not his whole family, that's why he said; "not in front of my boys." that's why you see the surprised look on his face when alejandro shoots them first.. this movie is a masterpiece..
I know presumably it'll all be "cleaned up" so this operation never even happened, but I like the detail of Alejandro straight up spitting on the grounds before murdering an entire family.
I honestly believe this was my favorite revenge scene I’ve ever seen. He was so good that if I saw Benecio walking down a dark alley, and if I didn’t know he was a Hollywood actor, I’d really believe he was Alejandro in real life. I feel the same way about Anthony Hopkins, if I were to see him walking down a street, I would think he eats people… For real.
This scene reminds me of the confrontation scene between Frank (James Caan) and Leo (Robert Prosky) at the end of 1981's 'Thief'. In both movies, the protagonist breaks into the antagonist's home. The protagonist then slowly and silently sweeps the house room by room with military-style movements and tactics while armed with a single semi-automatic handgun. The protagonist leaves one innocent bystander alive, but goes on to kill the antagonist's henchmen and eventually the antagonist himself.
I loved the false sense of security Fausto had when they started a conversation. He thought he can talk his way out of it because Alejandro didnt shoot them on sight. Little did he know that he was just savoring the moment of revenge.

Yup because at the end of the day they human. When it’s time to go they fear it.

@@homedepotindustrialfan936 Highly doubt they would have just grieved. His sons would have 100% sought revenge when they got older.
Love the small details. The decision to shoot the driver off screen for some reason just worked, and the way Alejandro relaxes and spits when he knows the hard work is done. Superb stuff
Spitting was a bit bad.
"six remain going blind"
Damn he counted the children.
You know what the meaning of this was. He had to kill the sons because they would grow up ending like their father and them it would be another motheg and child
@@EverGonzalez-x6dHe killed the sons bc the Cartel boss killed his daughter. It was purely about revenge for him.
@@EverGonzalez-x6d Well no, because he passed the maid and he also counted. 1 maid, him, the 2 sons, the wife and the husband make 6 total left alive in the house. The fact that he didn't kill the maid means he never intended to kill her or else he would have done it immediately. The thermal scanners were just telling him how many life signs were still in the house. Once he saw the maid and the 4 people at the dinner table he knew he could relax.
This is one of the most powerful movie scenes ever. Great movie.
This scene is the only reason I’m happy they didn’t use captions in this film. I am film obsessed and will pause and rewind to make sure I catch every word and every moment of every movie. So at first, I was very frustrated not being able to understand some of the dialogue since I’m not very good with my Spanish. However, this part changed my entire mindset on that directive decision. You don’t need to know Spanish to understand what is said in this ultimate scene. CHILLING.
What great is no long winded speech no sudden remorse no unbelievable getaway. The character stayed true to himself
But his mistake was that he thought he learned everything we knew. No, we taught him everything HE knew, not everything WE knew. Julio Cesar Cedillo's acting once his family were shot point blank is just so full of angst and unimaginable pain.
Amazing acting.
This scene alone gives me chills and the feel of the pain of loss of deeply loved ones in a split second. It depicts
the fragility of human life and how cause and consequence deeply affect our emotions to the point revenge in a
tit-for-tat blurs lines of what's "right" when everything is so wrong.
If someone chopped off my wife's head and threw my daughter into a tub of acid, there is no more right or wrong
in retaliation; it just is. No justifications can right the killing of the innocent in retaliation and yet the world is full of
greys because of consequences from cause. It's not enough that a murderer be sent to jail to live out his life behind
bars for any gruesome crime he committed in atrocity. That's too easy.

Yep, she knew enough English to make that out...
That's the comment I came looking for. She still had a tiny ray of hope for the boys until the daughter was mentioned.
Her acting was phenomenal. They all were.
Lack of exclamation marks makes this hard to understand dude.
His wife knew what he didn't know until it happened
I think that even his kids understood that their father killed his little girl and when he had the audacity to say it wasn't personal. They knew they were goners. I loved this one better than the other one.
Yup. As soon as he said “para mi si…” the boys looked at him and knew they were gone as well. Intense scene.
Charles Shwab ova here.
@@liambarreto1020
I dont think it was about that. It was about inflicting the same pain alejandro went through onto him before he kills him. It was out of vengeance and satisfaction not fear of retaliation
Benicio del Toro should have gotten an Oscar nomination for this role.
At the very least...
nomination only? not an award?
The writing is impeccable. Switching between English + Spanish and the language barrier of the two boys just builds the suspense because of what they can and cannot understand them saying. What a movie!!
The best revenge scene ever...
He has true grit. He accomplished his mission.
