I think Riddler believes Batman just needs to be shown that there is crime everywhere in Gotham and it’s the institutions that need to be fixed before you start to beat up thugs. Riddler just wanted to point him in the right direction and coerce him into being his instrument of justice. He’s quite literally obsessed with him, making sure that he of all people is notified of every clue by leaving a letter addressed to only him. It isn’t until when Bruce fails to die in the explosion at his manor do I think Riddler genuinely questions his identity. And I think he knows it, when he toys with Batman in his cell.

Dano's performance was excellent, playing with the hysterical side of the character that we know from the comics, while managing to make him credible and terrifying. The only thing that could further improve the character would be abandoning the mask. Many criticized the entire costume. Personally, it's only the mask that poses a problem for me. Edward "Nashton" Nygma (yes the name Nashton is indeed his birth name in the comics before the New 52 era and in the Arkham games, then was later replaced by the name Tierney in the Rebirth era), he loves himself too much to hide behind a mask. The film The Batman shows us that the character is a great admirer of Batman (until his disillusionment during the last act of the film). He uses the mask like Batman in a quest to find his "real self" just like Bruce before him with the Batman mask. But given the character's disillusionment with his idol I imagine him more wanting to chart his own path towards a costume without a mask indicating his definitive break with the one who initially inspired him. It would thus have a more accurate and logical look with the essence of the character. Not necessarily a suit + bowler hat which would denote too much with the very dirty atmosphere of this Gotham, but a green coat like in the first film, placing even more emphasis on the question mark aspect and just his exposed face . In short, something still street level but more accurate which would more closely resemble its design in the Arkham Knight game.
