Chicago Cubs Baseball News | Cubs spoil strong Steele start for second straight loss

- The Cubs fell yet again to an NL Central foe on Friday night, this time to the Reds 3-2 at Great American Ballpark. The Cubs are now 31-33 and closer to last place in the division than they are to first place, and their 7-14 record vs the NL Central is a big reason why.
Justin Steele delivered a quality start for the Cubs, striking out seven across seven innings of work. Poor defense from Michael Busch and a passed ball charged to Miguel Amaya led to two of Steele's three earned runs scoring - as the Cubs spoiled another strong start.
Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki are banged up. Hoerner was hit by a pitch on Thursday and only pinch ran on Friday, and Suzuki exited Friday's game after being hit by a throw while running the bases. Jordan Wicks is back, he will join a Cub bullpen desperately in need of a lefty. Porter Hodge was optioned to Iowa and Keegan Thompson was activated off the IL and sent down.

Great show guys! I'd personally like to see Davis called up. I think he's earned it & let's see what he can do when the lights are bright. He might be a spark we need.
Im guilty of this too, but if the front office doesn’t care enough to fix obvious issues, why should the fans care?
No idea how this team is underperforming so badly (except SP). It's like they're in the dugout smoking cigarettes, doing shots of Malört and playing Fortnite.
I remember watching Reggie Jackson smoking a cigarette in the dugout, throwing it on the ground, then getting up and hitting a home run. Lolol.
Thanks for the show guys! LET'S GO CUBS!!! ⚾️✌️💙🐻
It was encouraging that Dansby finally took an outside pitch to the right side.
Dansby has to stop swinging at balls way off of the plate. He'll start to see more hittable pitches. Morel has improved in that area and it should start paying off for him. Some of those hard hit balls will begin falling in.
@@edhorton2766 everybody needs to stop swinging at balls off the plate

Spot on about Catcher. Although Amaya just missed Homer yesterday. The position had been an Automatic Out all season. Yan is not even hitting. He hasn't been horrid in the past. The position is a joke on the team. Someone has to be catching in AAA?
Cubs going in knew they needed someone at 3 rd, catching and a closer, so there is that
I think there was a good belief that Amaya would progress not regress.
They felt they had to find a position for Morel. He can’t play third looking over his shoulder at Chapman plus Chapman isn’t going to sit on anyone’s bench at this stage of his career. Personally, I never saw Morel as an infielder and he was a poor outfielder as well. He’s a DH….at best.
@@cubsbaseballchannel Gomes was a good clutch hitter last year, too. I wished we could have picked up Caratini in the off season.
Hi Mick…I saw a post on a White Sox fan FB page and they suggested the Cubs trade PCA and Matt Shaw for Luis Roberts Jr. I’m thinking that won’t happen. But, if Jed Hoyer makes a deal to bring in help, I hope he doesn’t empty the farm system in the process.
Again, it looks like Seiya Suzuki is still mending from his previous injury. I don’t think he injured himself again on that slide…I think the issue has been lingering. I won’t be surprised if he gets placed in the IL again.
As far as Counsell goes, I like him. There’s always a learning curve with new managers, unless the team is completely established and this Cubs team was not. Unfortunately, the injuries have been a real issue and have made it difficult for the team to string together a strong winning streak. And, it doesn’t help when the offense has looked as lost as it has since early May.
I hope there are changes coming on the coaching side next season. I’ve never been a fan of Tommy Hottovy and I’m surprised that they brought Mallee back as one of their many hitting coaches.
This team won't become better until the defense, pen and offense improves. I think Counsell is massively overrated. I think most of the problems are due to Jed's choices to go with Morel and Busch at the corners together. If Davis comes up will Counsell play him or leave him on the bench collecting dust like he did with Vasquez.
Great points
That’s exactly what will happen to Davis. If Nico to go on the disabled list, be prepared for a week of mastrobuoni at second base
Bush is fine..morel isn't....I don't understand why Bush isn't at first every day.
Counsell is not overrated at all😂
The way we started we are in free fall!
What I think is this team is reflective of the front office and what David Ross was it’s more of a relaxed environment kind of also like Joe maddon they’re counting players being able to police themselves and hold each other as a team accountable and they’re not if they were you wouldn’t see a guy who’s made base running blunders finishing the game and playing the next game these guys are playing like they’re not afraid of losing there jobs and no one who can make that call is making it so they keep doing it. It’s sloppy from top to bottom and no one is stepping up and saying hey this type of play is not acceptable.
Brennen Davis. It’s time to see what he can do. Go Cubs!
and maybe Caissie
It is clear on two fronts: The Cubs made a mistake not going after Matt Chapman to fix 3b and they need new catching help which I don't think is in their minor's system. The Cubs have too many players who can't put the ball in play. Wisdom is all or nothing and mostly K's. Come FA again, the Cubs will have a hard time keeping their better pitchers if this doesn't change. This could be a last place team very easily.
This era of contact oriented approach has been a massive disappointment - and the Cubs are lacking slug. If they’re going to K 10 times a game, at least hit the ball out of the ballpark.
Davis will be a star , hopefully with the Cubs, but probably with some other team
If that catcher would've stopped the ball in the dirt 😢with 2 outs ended on base then of course next guy hits a double 2 runs score 🤬
Steele has been so unlucky.
the catcher position gave this game away
Mick, it could all be on Hoyer and Hawkins, because the Cubs could have had Matt Chapman and Rhys Hoskins. If Suzuki can't play, it's time for Owen Caissie. Is Moises Ballesteros still a viable catching prospect?
You can't be given the gift of bases loaded on two consecutive days and leave them all stranded. You can't keep Hendricks on the roster, period. You can't keep running out Gomes (and i LIKE Gomes as a leader) and expect to win games. They need to make some trades NOW. Two more lost series, and the Cubs won't be able to claw their way back.
Steele had good enough to give up three runs when your team only gets two runs
OK. They put morel in front of bellinger in today's line up. That's important. Dansby 4th not good though. This game should turn it around
Damn
Paying big money and having forever contracts often does not work.
But everyone says Jed won’t spend money and Ricketts is a cheap ass. This is why developing a farm system is essential. They need a system that supplies a couple of good starting position players every year whether directly or fodder for trades.
Nope!
Do the cubs pitchers have more successful pick off attempts than catchers have thrown out base stealers?
Whenever there was a season like this way back when w tons of injuries, players having tough years and everyone saying 'call up this guy, trade for that guy' Mike Murphy used to refer to all that as " Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" and then he'd crack up laughing and so would his callers to lighten the mood...
Other teams have injuries
@@jonneace54 different point
Problem is not on the players per se. Being managed by analytics and not on man management is not a winning strategy. Trading and buying players isn't going to change much. The team needs to be inspired and not demotivated by the numbers and the men in grey suits.
😂😂 idk having a soto or a 40hr pete alonso I think really changes this line up Swanson for example hit 9th in the braves line up and he did better why cause there where actully hitters on that team being truthful every player we have except maybe bellinger is a complimentary player I think we need a true 3B,1B,and second baseman but hell just adding a true power bat or bat that hits for high avarage with aha actual power threat chances the line up drastically but we dont have that we should make a trade doe pete Alonzo and then pick up a actual 3B
But it worked in Moneyball lol
Who is accountable. LETS START LOOKING AT THE COACHES! BULL PEN, HITTING COACHES,AND THE DEFENSIVE COACHES. ITS TIME FOR COACHING CHANGES.
I SOOSOOOO0OOOOOOO AGREE
Btw Mick - love the Ryno/rhino cap! Fitting for the way he played and hopefully how he's taking on cancer.
Ant…Mancini was HORRIBLE at 1B and in RF. Hosmer wasn’t much better.
Bellinger stabilized 1B last season.
Cody is easily the best fielding 1st baseman on the team. Really solid.
Getting Craig Counsell a total waste of 40 million dollars. jed should walk the plank on this one.
12innings 8er against reds maybe not lighting it up
Cubs pitching may be the best in the division, but gets negated because of their piss-poor defense. Looking like a last place team, behind St. Louis. Red and Pirates will be Brewers toughest competition.
Face it. The brewers are the best team in the division. Good fight for last place though.
It's a long season. They are the best If the season ended in June
Mick, have you heard anywhere that Bellinger has been one of the best defensive centerfielders in MLB? You brag about Armstrongs play there and speed but Bellinger is one of the fastest runners on this team. I'm not being mean, just curious. Thanks!
Oh poor baby. Do you need a hanky
Gapping hole in the whole cub roster
Cubs bullpen motto '24: No Lead Is Safe. Of course, there is a long history of Cubs bullpens like this. Much like the generational Bears QB situation - it's been the bullpen for the Cubs - sadly.
And it feels like every time the Cubs take the lead that half inning is when they blow it.
Is Matt Shaw injured? What about Shaw permanent 3rd baseman.period.
Yep, we still stinks!
Does Busch get more at bats that he's been better at the plate and hitting lefties? 1 hit on a lefty in Milwaukee and 2 hits in Cincinnati.
He should but it seems Counsell likes Wisdom.
What was his slash line?
Lefty righty matchups aren't as effective in my eyes as they used to be. Pitching has changed. More sweepers and splitters being thrown. Change ups have always been a struggle for the batter lefty on righty or visa versa. Now the splitters are similar. And not just Morel but lots of guys, are pounding these lefty to righty sweepers into the toes. It's time counsell just makes a lineup regardless of matchups and let's the guys play and also times he incorporates a day off in there for everyone. If he wants to play the matchup game late against a closer than fine
Send Busch to Iowa. Put Cody at 1st and Tauchman to right and DH Suzuki
If Bush goes to the minors, then brink up Canario or Davis and platoon them with Pete.
Keep Cody at 1st
Do you believe me now that it’s over?
Can you guys use a video to analyze the pros and cons of selling at the trade deadline and playing the kids? Personally, I think they have as much of a chance making it to the playoffs if they trade major league players. It might further degrade the reputation of the organization, but honestly it’s not a good rep anyway.
I think if they are at .500 at the trade deadline we trade for one true all star to start making ah actual core I dont have alot faith in our prospects outside of like 3 that wont be ready to be MLB starters for a few more years till then they are just like the guys on the team now complimentary players seeing how this is playing out tbh im not agaisnt trading some big league players aka (Horner, tauchman, bush and even morel) tauchman is a very interesting trade chip guy is playing well and if that keeps going we have a outfield that is over flowing and he is on a one year contract we could use him as a big trade piece
Great idea.
season is over...fire Hoyer
Mick would you consider a trade for the Rockies catcher Elias Diaz? He's hitting .301/.351/.440 The Rockies are a bad team and it might not would take much to pry him away. That would solve some issues behind the plate
We will talk about this soon, he’s a target.
Who u trading for him lol
@@jonneace54 Come on it's the Rockies, you can offer them a bag of balls and a case of soda and they'll probably take it.
I know you guys are not going to believe me but a lot has to do with live betting. Good teams are losing games they should win and I have never in my life seen so many lead changes also Seattle just lost an 8-0 lead. This doesn’t happen.
Porter Hodge back to Iowa? Are you F/ing kidding me?
Forget playoff
Its time to throw in the towel. See you next year.
Nothing to do with counsell... Really? Everything is on Counsell.
Lol at this point I’ll just take a catcher that knows how to catch get infront of the ball basic things
There’s no good reason not to promote Brennen Davis. If not now, when?
Also, Mervis is crushing the ball. If he can’t make it this time, it’s time to move on from him.
I for one am tired of hearing about analytics. Let's face it analytics aren't perfect. Despite their claims of protecting pitchers by limiting innings and pitch counts they still get hurt. Analytics believe in max effort and spin rates which puts additional stress on arms and shoulders. Therefore, inadvertently increasing the odds of ending up on the IL. I'd like to see the analytics crowd explain how Fergie Jenkins threw 20+ complete games year after year without his arm falling off. How did Nolan Ryan pitch in the majors for 27 years and Jim Kaat for 24 years without the benefit of analytics? How did Greg Maddux win over 300 games without the use of max effort velocity and innings limits? I vaguely remember a game where 40-year-old Warren Spahn and 24-year-old Juan Marichal hooked up in a 15-inning duel. Marichal won when Willie Mays hit a walk-off homer to end the game. Neither pitcher went on the disabled list the next day or saw their careers end. Today, no two pitchers in baseball can duplicate that effort. WHY? Analytics! 😡
Yep. Ernie banks might not have ever hit the ball over 100 mph.
Amaya passed ball cost us the game.
The catchers are bad
The defense is bad, the relief pitching is bad, and the hitting is bad. They get close enough to tantalize you but not quite enough to win. Same old Cubs I grew up with - not good enough to win.
And Mancini was NOT good defensively at first. Recall his error in London, as one example, which started our downward spiral last year. Let’s not engage in revisionist history.
Good call. Hosmer, though, was strong. Bellinger played more 1B last year too.
Maybe we're just not very good?
We aren't improving
This team needs to get rid of the garbage which includes Happ, Bellinger, Suzuki, Morel, Swanson, Busch, Wisdom, Amaya, Gomes, Hendricks, Taillon, and the whole damn bullpen!!!
I Hope the Cubs lose more games like this they deserve this loss..They lost because Amaya is an awful CaCtcher..Both on Defense and offense. With any other catcher this likely would have been a W for the Cubs. A pass ball by him lead to two runs..And then a throwing error later could have lead to more runs also..I Hope lossing because of bad players gets shoved right in Counsell's face! Amaya should have been sent down for better player at Iowa, weeks ago..INCOMPETENCE BY Counsell.
Poor babies. Does mommie and dad die need to come and kiss your boo boos
Poor babies. Does mommie and dad die need to come and kiss yiurvbooboos
Sorry young man but the cubs simply suck
Shake this dam team up already trade happ asap. Bring in sum Hispanic and black position players team looks like a private country club.
Happ has a no trade clause
Getting Craig Councell was a bad idea. There are SOO many holes in this line up. ZERO bullpen help and no one can hit the ball with runners on.
I blame Jed. But we all know where the real problem lies. And that's at the top with rickets. He hasn't cared about winning since 2016.
They used Counsell and a quiet offseason as hope that if everything went the same as last year, they’d win more games. Unfortunately the entire lineup has regressed both offensively and defensively.
@@cubsbaseballchannel when Jed acquired Councell, I had a lowly feeling in my gut. Cuz I knew then, just as I know now, the cubs do not have enough talent to do anything.
I'm told the cubs have an "amazing" farm system. I'm just wondering why the "talent" isn't being called up right now. My fear is, they're all four A players that can't hit a major league pitch. Much like mervis and p.c.a
You realize that nobody thought getting Counsell was a bad idea at the time, right?
You also realize Jed rebuilt the farm system that Theo destroyed by getting rid of a shitty core left from the WS team. Imanaga was a good signing. Bellinger had to be resigned or the masses would have lost their minds.
Thanks to those trades we have Ben Brown, PCA, Owen Caissie, etc.
What would you have done?
@@joecasey1329 so where is this farm system everyone keeps talking about? ... This current cubs team is mediocre at best and right now, sits two games below .500. One would think right now would be a good time to bring up the "talent". But what would that do? Jed has been incapable of building a bullpen since 2017 and highly incapable of finding nor bringing up a closer.
If things don't turn around real quick, I see Jed selling half the team. Which is exactly what I would do.
All Jed had to say at Councell's press conference was "this is a transition period for the Cubs. The talent isn't here yet. But will be in due time"
And now Ricketts has his cash cow Marquee network, which means I don't get Cubs anymore on UA-cam TV. Maybe that is a blessing. At least The Ricketts Clan is getting by financially /s.
Why are the Cubs celebrating Groomer Month?
Because Laura Ricketts is a lesbian.
Because people like you call gay people groomers, bro.
