  • A go-ahead, three-run homer off the bat of Cody Bellinger in the seventh inning of the Cubs 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday was the difference maker. The Cubs were in desperate need of a win after Hector Neris blew a save on Tuesday, and although the 9th inning had heavy traffic and even a run scored, Neris was able to nail down the win for the Cubs at Tropicana.
    The Cubs shook up the lineup ahead of Wednesday's contest. Not only was Nico Hoerner back in the lineup after a brief absence due to broken bones in his hand from a hit by pitch, but Christopher Morel led off, Michael Busch hit second and Seiya Suzuki (who homered) was the cleanup hitter.
    The Cubs got excellent relief outings from Tyson Miller and Drew Smyly, after Javier Assad allowed two runs in 4.2 innings of work.
    The Cubs added some minor league pitching, including Jorge Lopez, who had a 3.76 ERA with the Mets this year.
    Cubs vs Rays 5:50 CT
    Justin Steele (0-3, 3.65 ERA) vs Taj Bradley (1-4, 5.17 ERA)

      You think so? With a .571 OPS? In the modern game, lead off is supposed to be your best or second best hitter.

      in this day and age of the DH in both leagues, does the lead off hitter matter anymore? Now, they’re all just a lead-off hitter once. But, he still needs to be more consistent with his at bats and it shouldn’t matter where in the line-up they put him. Baby steps are for the minor leagues.

      Closer, then catcher. 3rd is very distant compared to the first two

    We need to start making trades. As much as I’m happy we won it was still a scary win and if you notice we’re in the lead most games till the closing pitcher comes in. We need to fix our bullpen asap and Idk how Hoyer doesn’t see that

    That belli bomb was hit right where we were sitting, but we moved spots. I was pissed.

    Bellinger had struck out earlier in the game with 2 runners on so that bomb was great. Belli, Happ or Suzuki need to produce more in order to win games because the bullpen is terrible. The starting pitching can only carry the team so much.

    Busch is coming around again but defensively Infield wise, the best defense they can put out is Belli at first to save errant throws from Morel/Swanson. I truly believe Swansons struggles defensively are in part to not having a good first baseman imo and all others.

    PCA bringing that "Energy" with another massive infield hit. Soon people are going to start comparing his offensive prowess to Pete Rose and Ty Cobb. NOT!!!

      Couldn't say it better. A hit that was really an error. He stole a base. So did everyone. I root for him but I still don't. See this stations fascination with him.

    Why not leave Smyly in for the 9th? He was 6up 6down for the previous two innings. Let him finish it. Counsell’s moves always seem to baffle me. Got lucky last night….

  • @Mayznor86
    @Mayznor86 Місяць тому +1

    Why would they sign Lopez? FIP is higher than era. Walks almost even w k's. Why do they want another Neris? If they want swing and miss while never hitting strike zone, get Ethan Roberts to control that slider. But I'd rather see pitchers challenge where hitters feel they HAVE to swing cause it'll be in the zone.
    Leiter ST vs A's (curveball) and Smyly vs Dodgers (curveball) perfect example. Challenge doesn't need to be 102mph.

  • @edhorton2766
    @edhorton2766 Місяць тому +1

    Nervous Neris can't be the closer. Assad pitched half the game and threw 90 pitches, only 55 strikes. His command has not been as good lately. Fortunately, Miller and Smiley did a great job getting them to the 9th. Enter Neris who gives up a homer, a walk, and a single. Not acceptable. The good news? Belli and Seiya coming on. Morel is getting much better at laying off of pitches out of the zone and Dansby, when he does the same is a good hitter. Make it so.
