  • The Chicago Cubs shutout the Baltimore Orioles 4-0 on Wednesday night at Camden Yards. The win means the Cubs have won back-to-back series for the first time since mid-April and the Cubs have won three straight for the first time since a four game win streak April 23-26.
    Shota Imanaga delivered six shutout innings, and the Cubs bullpen pitch a scoreless final three frames. With the emergence of Porter Hodge and Hunter Bigge plus Mark Leiter Jr. and Julian Merrweather getting healthy - could the Cubs bullpen become a strength of this team?
    Christopher Morel homered and Michael Busch, Nico Hoerner, Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson all had multi-hit games. PCA also returned to the Cubs' starting lineup.
    Cody Bellinger was removed from the game after being hit by a pitch on his middle finger, Craig Counsell said he didn't think he could throw a ball.
    Cubs look for the sweep on Thursday.

      With respect it depends on which ones. May be you trade for areas of need in the pipeline. Pitching Catching upgrades needed. This current team might be able bring some good trades but need a throw in. B Davis might be one such player. But mostly I agree with you.

      @@ttanne7838 of course. I’m speaking purely of rentals and gambling on this season. If they can enhance next year’s team without overpaying then I’m all for it. Gotta be careful about the throw ins though. I don’t think anyone would take Davis in the middle of another injury. Not to mention that stars normally take a haul. The Yankees don’t have a guarantee that Soto is coming back next year for example.

      @@danielaguirre133 When you say, different approach to hitting, do you mean the low batting averages and constant swinging for the fences? That what bothers me. I know analytics say that's the better bet and I have heard people say singles are for chumps. I feel like guys like Swanson hurt themselves doing that. Guy with pop that should be hitting line drives, swinging for the fence and ending up with no hits and no home runs. Just asking cordially.

    I wanted a Sale last season. If they go 2 of 3 against the Cardinals and Brewers and win against Arizona and KC (as they should), then people will say the Cubs are the hottest team in baseball. Even if the Cubs make a few trades to get a couple of studs, they still don't look like a World Series to me.

    I agree with everything you said Mick about breaking this team up. I would be more worried about salary dumping than getting something back for these guys. Jed has put this organization in a very bad position. I don't think Jed is going to be able to dig himself out of this hole. This team needs someone new to undo this mess.

  • @Rondomino47

    I'm conflicted: On one hand I want the Cubs o win, win, win, on the other hand I was ready for them to sell, get away from some big salaries, and give some prospects a chance to prove themselves. Do the Cubs turn it on and OFF at will? Then what gives? Among Hodge, Bigge, and Keegan Thompson, I think the Cubs might have a diamond in the bullpen-a dominant closer.

    Glad to see the recent success but not drinking the Kool-aid. I think the Cubs team we see might be a team on their best behavior because 1) they are going up against one of the best teams in the MLB and they know it and 2) they all know that any and all of them could be crossing the auction block at the trade deadline and they're all playing for their lives to try to stay in baseball and hopefully be paid for it. We didn't see this sense of urgency over the last 2ish months and for me its too little too late at this point. Sell, Trade, Draft, dig up Monty Hall and play Lets Make a Deal.

  • @ricklasse
    @ricklasse 22 дні тому +2

    Mick, I don’t think they’re playing with a sense of urgency, because this is the same hustle I’ve seen all season. I’ve read comments about this team not having any heart and I completely disagree. They’re playing with the same heart and aggressiveness that they’ve had all season long, but, now, it’s finally turning into wins.
    It’s the same hustle that Nick Madrigal got thrown out at home and got beaten up for in here unmercifully….Willie Harris, too. Willie Harris is just as aggressive as Don Zimmer was when he was the third base coach in 1984 and when he was manager, too. You try to do the same on a reattached hamstring, like he has, and have better results.
    I have to believe that anytime a new boss is hired, there’s always going to be a period of adjustment and not just limited to spring training either. What I’m seeing is a manager who wants his players to hold themselves accountable and also know how to manufacture runs, which includes base stealing, which they’ve done a lot more of lately, and not slug their way through. This is a totally different mindset than when David Ross managed.
    I’m just happy to see them playing better right now, and playing better can build a little more confidence, especially having everyone back and healthy…particularly Mike Tauchman……he’s been missed.
    Keep in mind just how many injuries flared up during that two month slump….pitching and offense. If the list of injuries wasn’t so long, they wouldn’t have had to use Jose Cuas at all and Hector Neris wouldn’t have had to be thrown into the closer role. When players get hurt, rosters have to get shifted around and in the Cubs case this year, their roster got shifted around a lot.
    Now, it looks like things are finally settling down.
    Every day, it seemed, there was a new injury…that had to be frustrating and demoralizing. But, now, hopefully, the team will have almost everyone back and healthy by the end of the month. I’m really looking forward to having Mike Tauchman back and if Cody Bellinger gets put on the IL, they may have to rush Tauchman back, or bring up Owen Caissie…..but, I don’t think that’s going to happen. I don’t think the Cubs are going to push the button on Caissie’s major league service time anytime soon.
    If the Cubs can avoid any more setbacks from injuries, this will be a fun team to watch for the next two and a half months. Will they claim a wild card spot…who knows….but, if they keep this team intact, it won’t be due to not having a heart…that’s for sure.

    • @edhorton2766
      @edhorton2766 22 дні тому

      Arguably, Mike Tauchman and Mchael Bush have been the Cubs most consistent position players this year. Losing Merriweather and Alzolay was a real gut punch to the bullpen. Add in the total lack of production at catcher. Gomes was a big piece last year.

    • @ricklasse
      @ricklasse 22 дні тому

      @@edhorton2766 I’ve been really hard on Miguel Amaya, but he has been playing beyond his still range this season and if part of the job is to build up a player’s confidence at the major league level, the front office has failed that with Amaya. One of the problems has been that there aren’t that many really good catchers out there to trade for and I really don’t want to see the Cubs empty their farm system for a catcher.
      I really like Yan Gomes and whenever he decides to retire, and if he was interested, I’d love to see the Cubs hire him as a roving minor league catching coach. I do, also, think he’d make a good manager someday, too.

    • @edhorton2766

      @@ricklasse Amaya at this point would be fine as a backup catcher. Gomes was one of my favorite Cubs last year. Great clutch hitter. Time caught up with him. Letting Contreras slide away really annoys me. Victor, too.
