  • The Chicago Cubs have blown another game. No surprise. As has been the case in most of the painful losses during this down stretch, the Cubs received excellent starting pitching from Jameson Taillon, giving the Cubs their MLB leading 17th start allowing no runs.
Sticking on theme, Christopher Morel homered to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Cubs handed the game to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead and by the end of it, Hector Neris had blown his third save and the Cubs had lost 5-2 to Tampa Bay.
Anthony Pasquale and Mick Gillespie talked about the failings of this roster, and who is to blame. They also talked about Pete Crow-Armstrong's electricity, Ben Brown's neck strain and the Cubs' odd choice to once again leave an injured Nico Hoerner on the active roster, this time with Luis Vazquez in Tampa Bay awaiting a call. The pair also got into some of Jed Hoyer's comments about improving internally vs externally.
    Cubs vs Rays 5:50 CT
Javier Assad (4-2, 2.74 ERA) vs Aaron Civale (2-5, 5.51)

3 things wrong offensively. 1) Too many guys watch a first pitch fastball or rolling curve with not much break go right over the plate for strike one. 2) They are too picky. They let again a fast ball or non breaking curve ball miss the outside part of the plate by 1/2 inch or one inch. It is too close to take and half the time the ump calls it a strike. The Cub hitter then always has a nasty look at the umpire. One inch off the plate is hittable. I am talking about outside pitches. Take it the other way. 3) They don't situational hit. Men in scoring position and Cubs just swing away as usual. Many times they don't get the ball to outfield or even advance the runners one base let alone scoring him. April was a success taking pitches, but it does not work for the entire season.

The starting pitching has been good enough to lead the division. Bote is doing it. Play him. If Nico goes to the IL, bring up Davis or Canario. The injuries have been mind boggling. 13 of the 23 pitchers on the 40 man roster have been on the IL. It's tough to get any kind of flow going, especially with no bullpen protection in tight games.

We need a good benches clearing brawl to get this team rolling. Our hot dog 3rd baseman needs to keep throwing his hand grenades while batting 200. Eventually a pitcher with balls is going to drill him. Then lets clear the benches, get it out of our system and play some ball. Might be what it takes.

Dansby is looking like a swing and miss signing. I like Dansby but I never understood the signing. His bat has always been ok but not great. And Nico was a very capable SS. You also had Morel and 5 other guys that could play 2B competently. I hope Dansby turns it around.

    • @flatusexpellus1779
      @flatusexpellus1779 Місяць тому +1

Prob gave into the growing fan pressure that they better get 1 of the 4 SS at the time, espec after Trey Turner wanted to go to Philly so badly and Correa failing his physicals and some of the Cub podcasters and blogs BS-ing everyone that Cub might sign both Bogaerts and Dansby to play 3rd and SS, so Jed may have felt he better get Dansby after Bog got that huge contract w Padres... it's understandable how the tidal wave can push Tom and Jed, but it's a bad tidal wave from everyone... that 27mil could have helped get a much bigger bat and a younger player

I did a quick check on baseball-reference and the Cubs bullpen has blown a combination of 15 leads/saves and have been charged with, at least, 20 of this year’s losses. Many of those relievers have spent time on the IL, so, I have no idea if a lingering injury if behind the bullpen struggles.
As far as the offense is concerned, I still don’t understand why a team needs four hitting instructors…because, obviously, it’s not working? Are the Cubs trying to bring back the College of Coaches…because that didn’t work either.

Hoyer is a genius. He sold us fans the team was made to win, he made us think our minor leaguers are the best. If PCA is our best prospect, and he is ok, there is no future superstar. Our farm is good ‘cause they are good playing together. Finally, Hoyer sold Ricketts, that hiring Counsel and firing Ross will be a difference without spending in players. Genius!! But everything is backfiring to him because of KARMA for his treason to Ross. It wasn’t handled well. No ethic.

    3 trades.
    1. Break the bank for Miller from Oakland. Closer should be priority #1.
    2. Trade for Diaz from Denver. It will be a rental but they should jump on it early to beat the comp.
    3. Trade for Parades from Tampa.
Morel needs to go. Worst Defender in baseball. Let another team figure it out.

Secondly , a manager is supposed to earn his keep in 1 run games and scoring with RISP and keeping the LOB number down . Counsell has not done a damn thing to make a difference in these areas , and the constant batting order changes do more harm than good . The outrageous contract they gave Counsell and the low class dismissal of David Ross has left a bad taste in a lot of mouths , including some players and understandably so . This was another mistake by the incompetent Hoyer , they overrated Counsell and Milwaukee has proven that . If your waiting for their unproven prospects to make a difference , it's gonna be a long , long wait . Don't fall for that overhyped BS !

Suzuki is fragile, unlucky, and umpires hate him apparently. Suzuki will accept a trade to a warmer climate. Tauchman may have some value. Gawd it's a tough time to be a Cubs fan.

Transposing this idea I had while listening to another podcast:
We should initiate an MLB rule where if a team throws a pitch over 100mph, the organization gets fined $5000 and it goes directly into a competitive balance tax.
Basically low risk infractions incur the minimum penalty. And a high risk infraction, like what St Louis did to Willson Contreras would be the maximum penalty.
Think about what this would do, it would:
A: discourage max effort pitching, increase batter success and game excitement.
B: extend player careers on both sides of the ball
C: decrease the competitive gaps between the best and worst teams in the league
D: cheaters are penalized, promoting fair play

@@Mark-si2hflook at how far back the majority of teams are in the standings. Those are end of season numbers. Look at all the injuries across the game. Look at the pitching dominance. All these things aren’t good for the sport.

I really think you need to move the mound back 6 feet. The game has evolved over the last 150 years and the pendulum has swung way too far over to the pitchers. There needs to be a big correction.
