Chicago Cubs Baseball News | Cubs WALKOFF Cards
The Cubs plated three runs in the 9th inning to stun the St. Louis Cardinals, beating them 5-4 at Wrigley Field on Thursday night. Cody Bellinger got things started in the 9th with a home run. Nico Hoerner singled and stole second base. Dansby Swanson battled, down to his last strike, and lined an RBI double to left to tie the game. Then, Mike Tauchman punched a two-strike pitch down the left field line and the Cubs walked-off the Cardinals as Swanson scored the winning run.
Nate Pearson picked up the W in a game Shota Imanaga pitched and struck out seven. Adbert Alzolay is out for the season as he will undergo arm surgery.
The Cubs also displayed their Motorola jersey patches.
Cubs vs Cardinals 1:20
Javier Assad (5-3, 3.23 ERA) vs Erick Fedde (7-4, 3.11 ERA)

    With the addition of Paredes, it buys the Cubs time to give Shaw, Triantos and Cowles more time to develop in the minor leagues instead of pushing them through too quickly. I think we’re seeing that happen right now with PCA and Amaya…I think they were promoted too fast, but, it was out of necessity. Hopefully, Paredes can stay healthy for the next few seasons which will allow the Cubs to see where they’re at with those three players.

    Is it bad to want greatness from the team and cannot enjoy the small victories? Ever since we started "competing" again, my standards was that this team need to get into the playoffs and everything else is a failure. I guess this is what fans of other big markets teams do, absolute shit on their team until they get better because they want to hold the team to high standards. Even tonight, like why are we celebrating a victory when the season is a total waste. It's most likely a me problem and i need to take a break from this team/baseball in general.

    I think it’s interesting that the five guys who played key roles in last night’s offense were five guys that “the experts” were wanting to see traded, just a few days ago…Suzuki, Bellinger, Hoerner, Swanson and Tauchman. Suzuki’s home run out the Cubs ahead 2-1 and the other four made it a really fun night at Wrigley Field. Does last night and the night before mean the Cubs have turned the corner….nope. They’re just as unpredictable as they’ve been all season, but, it’s been fun to see them play like this. ESPN said that the Cubs have lost 53 games when being down 2 runs in the 9th inning….40 games this year and 13 games last year since the last come from behind win. My big concern is that if Cody Bellinger stays hot, he’ll opt out of his contract at the end of season and go elsewhere and that would be a huge loss. The Cubs need his professional at bats every night…and his steady defense. And, to add to the discussion from yesterday about $300M contracts…aren’t you glad that the Cubs aren’t stuck with a Mike Trout-like contract. Trout’s going to be paid another $38M and miss another season and the Angels have him under contract for a several more years. Could you imagine the heat Hoyer would be getting from Cubs fans if the Cubs had a guy like that under contract? This is why I’m fine if the Cubs avoid the BIG contracts, because those contracts are such a huge risk…more of those contracts have failed rather than have been successful. I’d rather split that money in half and sign two less expensive free agents to fill gaps.

    I’m really glad someone finally had the testicular fortitude to say what needed to be said about Jed! Yes he would be a great GM or team President for one of those small low market teams. We need Preller or Dombrowski, Cohen, someone that isn’t afraid to go be aggressive and get Soto in the off season and then trade some of your minor league pieces for a proven closer. This team could be right up there fighting for the division if they had a power bat and someone that could close out games. Honestly they should be running away with this division if you look at money and how much their payroll is compared to everyone in the central.

Jed is also timid and scared, so go figure.... Catcher needs addressing, the 30 hr guy that is missing, but the BENCH needs a massive upgrade. Wisdom, Mastro, Bote,... it is a terrible bench. Hey Jed, you didn't make the playoffs last year and won't again this year, yet you plan on running out the same line up in 25? He is a GM embarrassment.

      How about blaming the players, too! From 2017-mid2021, the team, on the field had a bunch of chances to get back to the world series, and the Ricketts and Theo/Jed spent a ton of money adding players who should have helped and they didn’t get the job done. After the trade deadline in 2021, this has been a complete rebuild…no different than what we all went through from 2012-2015…rebuilds take time and patience. Has it been perfect…no. But, to say that the Ricketts or Hoyer have no interest in building another world championship is not true.

      @@briandaugherty4678 The Cubs have the top 1 or 2 farm systems in baseball…I’ll take that “record”. Thanks to Jed! Hoyer’s record started in 2021 and he had to do what Theo was afraid to do and ran away from. In mid-season Jed traded away a bunch of complacent, entitled, players and had to do a complete rebuild, especially with a depleted farm system, thanks mostly to Theo. I’m going to give Jed Hoyer the same patience and time that Theo Epstein asked for when he became president of the Cubs. It took Theo four years to get the team into postseason. This is year 4 for Jed Hoyer, but, I’m cutting him a little slack because of the sell-off in mid2021.

    • @ricklasse
      @ricklasse День тому

      @@briandaugherty4678 keep in mind PCA and Amaya “skipped a grade” and have been having to play catch-up. Both of them played limited time in Iowa before being brought up. If Bellinger hadn’t cracked his ribs early in the season when he did, I think Crow-Armstrong would still be in Iowa. PCA has actually played more games in the major leagues now than he ever did in Iowa. And the same goes for Miguel Amaya. As far as Amaya goes, there weren’t a lot of top catchers on the market over the winter and I think the Cubs were hoping to split the time between Gomes and Amaya, but, Gomes just couldn’t do it anymore, unfortunately, and by then, everyone knew the Cubs were in need of a catcher and were, probably, asking too much….so, Miguel Amaya got thrust into the everyday catching job. I give Jed Hoyer credit for getting Michael Busch, too. He’s been a nice acquisition for the Cubs. But, keep in mind that this is his first full season in the major leagues, so there’s going to be some periods of adjustment for him, too. And, keeping him in the lineup all season long is paying off. So for the people who say they want to see the kids play, sometimes there’s a lot of growing pains in letting the kids play. As far as Matt Mervis is concerned, I just don’t think he was given enough time to acclimate himself to major league pitching. I’ve heard more that one commentator say that it’s a big jump from AAA to the major leagues for hitters and I think it was too small of a sample size for Mervis to show what he could do on a major league team. I hope the Cubs trade him to a team who will give him a shot at being their everyday first baseman. Because, it’s hard to know what to expect from a guy who was hitting around .300 in the minor leagues, until he, actually, gets there…which is still part of letting the kids play.

    This Cubs lineup will be the same next year. The players we see now are locked in for several years. The catcher position has to be addressed in the offseason. I can’t see Amaya starting next year. If the Cubs can upgrade in that position with the better bat and defender the team will be better. The current team has the talent they’re just under achieving.

    If you think this team has been fixed because Morel is gone, something is wrong. There is plenty of players that needs to be either traded or DFA'D, and dump payroll.
