    RE fish packing. I worked in inventory control in a fish packing plant in 1992. The words export and import are a little confusing. But the way it worked was, fish were purchased from the fisherman. Then they were processed at our facility, A certain amount of the fish is unusable, tail, fins, de-boning in certain cases. So the whole cod coming into the facility would weigh more than the fillets that leave. The difference between these 2 numbers is called the yield. I hope that helps.

    The Skeleton at the Bottom of the Ocean is more Die Hard humour you'll notice that theres a Gold Lighter in the Tub with the body which is what Bruce Willis has in his hand when he says "Come out to the coast, well get together have a few laughs". It may also be a reference to the packing plants pre war issues. There was a problem with the air conditioning inside the plant (Bruce Willis is crawling through the ducts when he says it) it could also be a play on the fact that on the day the bombs fell the workers where trapped inside the Building and may have used the air ducts to try and escape

    Biological things rot because of micro-organisms, if radiation killed them, fish would stay "fresh" for as long as there is nothing to decompose them. Same thing happened in Red Forest in Chernobyl, leaves fall from the trees, but there is nothing to decompose them. Its a stretch, but its possible
    Thing that doesn't make sense tough is the fact that dead fish somehow mutated

    Ox, the simplest explanation can many times be the correct one.
    The fish packing plant is importing (as in bringing it into the company's facilities) the fresh fish, and then exporting the now processed and packaged fish.
    The discrepancies in the exported amounts compared to the imported amounts can be attributed to a number of factors:
    -Some of the purchased fresh fish won't pass quality checks and gets discarded
    -There will be a noticeable loss of weight from fresh to processed fish (as the fish is cleaned, and then either fresh packed such as fillets or canned, or ground and breaded)
    -Some vendors will not order as much on certain months, leaving a bit of surplus that wasn't sold (exported).
    So, nothing unusual really going on, just typical fresh goods (same happens in produce or other meat processing) business.

    Maybe the reason why they exported less fish then they imported is because the consumers don't want to deal with the fish bones, heads, scales and, organs. So the packing facility was also cutting off and removing the heads, organs, scales and, bones of the fish, reducing the weight of the fish they exported.

    There are lots of countries now that essential do what this fishpacking plant do. For example Norway, of all the places - exports their fish to Asia where it is processed and then returned to them. Ecnomic globalization made this feasible and more profitable to do it this way - even though it seems very strange to send it across the world. And of course you are going to export less than you imported - a certain percentage of the fish that you get is not going to meet your standards. Obviously sick/diseased, too small, malformed, etc., are going to get discarded.

    • @murphsmodels8853
      @murphsmodels8853 7 років тому +13

      Plus you don't send out the whole fish. You recieve whole fish, but processing (removing internal organs, head, bones, etc) removes some weight.

    • @somebody5702
      @somebody5702 7 років тому

      That's probably it, though I'm not sure if the fallout universe got to globalization, seeing how fractured the world had to be to blow up. Might not have been necessary for the developers to alter though.

    • @Sunsetlady
      @Sunsetlady 7 років тому +1

      As well, it's average-per-day, not a precise monthly total. Import probably gets a slight boost because they need time to actually package the fish. They're exporting more Cod in September than they're importing, so it's probably a stockpile built up from previous months that's been stored

    • @agapeincognito
      @agapeincognito 7 років тому +4

      No offense intended, but I think people are over-analyzing this too much. Simply from the import/export terminal alone, compare each month and it makes sense. July to July for example, you'll notice that as less is shipped out, the inventory increases; when it's the same, the inventory is steady; when more is shipped out, the inventory decreases. This is further proven by the fact that they use or don't use terms like "slightly" to describe inventory changes, and this use of these terms matches the counts. In the one case I saw where the inventory didn't match, if you look at the supply and inventory across all three months and the changes, then it can be accounted for.

    • @agapeincognito
      @agapeincognito 7 років тому +1

      Also, there used to be a difference between a "packing" house and a cannery. Packing houses would simply preserve and pack fresh cuts. That difference in terms is not really the same these days and often a fishery (or other meat processing plant) will do both cuts and canning. However, since there is an actual meat cannery in FO4, perhaps the older packing term does in fact apply here and this plant only did cuts. If you want to learn more about what actually goes on in US fisheries, look at websites for them in Alaska, as well as the state and federal restrictions they have to adhere to and it makes a lot more sense.

  • @SoulsOfWisdom
    @SoulsOfWisdom 7 років тому +17

    I never worked at a plant, but living in a fishing community I can say that fishing in general is often a seasonal job. So maybe the plants collect a surplus of fish through these busy seasons and store them while they sell them year round? That would be my guess.

    So if you go to Four Leaf fishpacking plant, Apparently it was an operational plant still during 2287. So Bethesda simply reuse the art assets of the conveyor belt from that location when they created the Mahkra Fishpacking. In fact it seems Four Leaf was used by the ghouls that are now feral inside the plant, So possibly they were turned into ghouls by continuously eating the irradiated fish. On a side note, Mahkra Fishpacking seems to operate like most Coastal plants as in they contract out local fishermen to catch a certain quote of fish, It seems Four Leaf was issuing better contracts out to the fishermen before the great war since before the Great War, the plant was operating on a deficit and was threatened with bankruptcy, partly due to mismanagement and partly because the waste water runoff from the nearby General Atomics factory , Which is why they needed to find more fishermen. The reason you're seeing such high import volume and lower export volumes in their reports at Mahkra Fishpacking, is from packaging process and also I believe there was espionage, An example of that being the cooling system and ventilation system failures or being tampered with. You also should keep in thought that theft or the use of the black market was increasing because of inflation and stockpiling of goods was a big dilemma/Concern of the citizens/military.

      Since we can use light to send and receive data, it wouldn't surprise me if you could actually store this, but the information would be useless beyond writing other cells to be the exact same sequence.
      I don't think hes saying you can get someones life story from a chunk of flesh, although you can write code into DNA now and that is another story entirely (but yet the results are exactly the same)
      So as for now unless your a spy transporting a rival nations nuclear codes as part of your ass instead of inside it... the code write now would be the equivalent of just a bunch of ones and zeros again basically only relevant for sequencing.

    Speaking as one who has sold international shipping at DHL, importing is simply shipping goods from a foreign country into your country and exporting is shipping from your location to a foreign country. This is the most basic definition of import/export. Shipping within one's one country is simply that, shipping. However, this does not seem to be BGS' idea of import/export. So, we as players are naturally confused. Honestly, IDK what they were thinking. Thanks for all the awesome content Oxhorn. :) Keep up the great work! I fully agree with krikkit's explanation for the weight differences. The waste accounts perfectly for the lost weight.

  • @oaksparoakspar3144
    @oaksparoakspar3144 7 років тому +2

    They are buying tonnage (average per day, not per month) of fish from fishing boats and they they are exporting the processed fish.
    When the fishing boats bring in a haul, it has to be sorted by type, cleaned (gutted), and then packed in ice to be shipped to markets.
    The fishing boat acts like a private business, the packing industry sorts, cleans, packages, and ships out the fish.
    This is identical to what the cannery down the cost would do, except that instead of packing in ice for fresh fish shipments, the cannery takes the fish and cleans, cooks, and cans it. This is why canned fish is cheaper than fresh - they are not as tied to the variance in supply and demand, since they are not shipping a fresh product they can take the cheap excess from the packers that the market doesn't need.

    The general purpose of a fish packing plant is to remove all the bits of a fish that no one wants to eat like the head tail and guts. They then pack them into boxes or plastic bags then freeze or refrigerate them. The plant will then ship out the packed fish to various distributors. In order to make a profit they sell the packed fish at a higher price often double that, what they bought the fish from the fishing boats.

    • @jamessyme7443
      @jamessyme7443 7 років тому

      To add to above that a usually when a plant exports much less than it imports it usually means it's losing business.
      Imports are what is brought into the plant local or overseas, and the exports is what leaves the plant.

    Fish caught in a different state/region will sell better outside of it's homestead. A Californian salmon will be wanted more outside of it's own state. It gives a illusion of rarity. You can up the prices because "What are you going to do? Go to a different state and get it there"

    Hey Oxhorn I know I’m commenting on an old video but all the raiders look exactly the same. Mine were all a dude with a Mohawk. I’ve seen others play this too, like you. It’s a different character, but all the raiders look the same. Also there is a railroad Cache sign on the red truck next to the plant. The synths are there to (probably) ambush the next group of Railroad members to come along. There is an on cache inside the truck. And none of the raiders have synth components, which makes me think of clones. Love your vids dude!

      that's probably intentional as the appearance is randomized. each time they spawn the game chooses a random face to apply to all of the Raiders... over a dozen of them. My guess is that they're clones that escaped from the Institute, probably people cloned to be used as raw materials for making Gen 3 Synths.

      David The fact that it has more aluminum than any other in the commonwealth tells me that's it's far from useless, it's also pretty good for ammo from the synths and all the dead raiders. I need to remember about this place when I get back to Fallout 4.

    The imports refer to what comes in so this could just mean that they IMPORT from local fishermen and then export the same fish

  • @xaqqa

    Pretty sure Boston Bluefish is under 'imported' because it's being brought INto their facility.. I might have not understood it properly but its what I made of it..

    • @greenyad112
      @greenyad112 7 років тому +1

      Xaqqa that is correct, imports work similarly everywhere that buys goods from other suppliers. Importing goods is bringing a good or service into an area where said good or service is either uncommon or non existent

    • @xaqqa

    It's quite possible the fish haven't rotted due to preservatives. Remember that in the Fallout universe, foods are pumped full of preservatives to last longer to attempt to stop food shortages. It's a possibility that the fish had been preserved, but not packed before the bombs had dropped.

    Hey Oxhorn, after watching this video, I decided to check out the hideout under the bridge. Your theory about the group dying from radiation might be only part of it. When I was there I noted a pitcher, drinking glasses, a bottle of vodka and rat poison. Looks more like a suicide pact type of thing.
    As an aside, I enjoy all of your videos and you're the main reason I've begun using mods. I've played through, explored every inch of the map once or twice. Built and rebuilt some settlements and have now started using mods for my playing. It does make the game more enjoyable to have a couple immersion mods. Having certain settlement mods makes it much easier to build in some areas as well.

    Some things I noticed: 1: that table with the dead scientist and a few other dead people has a pitcher, some glasses, and some rat poison. I think they killed themselves out of desperation because they realized they weren't going to be rescued. You see the same thing with one of the people in the Cambridge Polymer Lab. 2: I believe the explanation for why the Institute was there is much more simple than your idea: they wanted aluminum and knew that a fishpacking plant would be a good source for it. If you grab the "junk" items in the Institute, such as spanners, cauterizers, recorders and tweezers, you'll notice that much of it has aluminum as a component. So, I believe that the answer is simply that the Institute has great need of aluminum so they sent a synth team to a facility that they believed possessed a good quantity of it.

    Fish packing plants also package other companies products for them as a secondary manufacturer usually to meet a desired quota, that could have been inventory logs of product supplied prior to packaging before shipping out both Walmart and hannafords use this method to repackage seafood that goes dry or sits to long it saves cost and manpower. Pretty common in New England.
