actaully the cut content makes sense, you beat his beast fighter, she's all strung out. he sends her with you so she will get cleaned up and possibly come back better than ever, thus earning him more caps. more than he would if she dies in the ring or from a chem overdose.

Okay, ignoring the cancerous number comments, why in the world did Bethesda cut this from the finished game? This content is exactly what I was hoping for when I learned about the Combat Zone, like a Fallout based Cyrodiil Arena complete with paid combat and betting, plus it makes Cait a bit more interesting!

Bethesda being lazy or not working as a cohesive team, thus things get forgotten and swept under the rug. Skyrim and FO4 were lackluster in the story area, the very thing that made Beth amazing back in the day, which played third fiddle behind combat and graphics.
the stories in their games suffice, to try and act like the NV story was great is a joke, a bethesda game really isn't about the story, thats not what drives a bethesda game, its exploration, combat and just roleplaying your character, bethesda games aren't about deep intense linear stories, that wouldn't fit the sandbox type of game very well, i think the stories are just fine for the world they make, i want them spending most of the development time in the actual world itself, like the settlement buillding, combat, locations in the world to explore and battle it out in, thats what they need to keep doing.
As a Boston native I love that they added an real place that’s not to well known. The combat zone was the old name for the theater district.

Maybe Tommy only appears more ruthless in the cut content because he has to put on a show for the raiders. In both cases he seems to care about Cait though. I'm glad there are modders out there though, because I like the restored combat zone.

Maybe Tommy may have been using the tactics of the old WWF (pre WWE). Where you had one wrestler that was your main pull but he got so good he was undefeated; people wanted to see him fall. So the next match he goes down and boom new champ. The king of the ring goes away for awhile (Cate goes with you to vault 95), he "retrains" (Cate gets the chems out of her system) and he comes back to reclaim his title belt.

+Oxhorn in regards to why it would make sense for the cut content to send Cait with you, sometimes you will put your prize fighter out of the ring to generate more revenue from allowing new blood come up through the ranks and stay undefeated, then have a "returning to the ring" bout. Also, when one fighter wins too much you don't make much money from bets. The whole prospect of betting on fights is the "unknown" result. We hear that Cait has won the last 100+ fights undefeated. It'd be a good time to put her out to pasture for a bit. Add in that she's "getting sloppy" from chems, and she's probably not going to make it to the "Tyson/Holyfield" level of fight, which could generate huge crowds and caps.

This is an old video but for anyone reading this: "Bethesda" cut alot of its content & used it for dlc, Fallout 4 base game was rushed to market & not finished. For example low res textures, then later releasing high res texture pack, also the fighting area in "nuka world" dlc was content re-used from the "combat zone" in vanilla fallout 4!
Derumana Story No... just business wary.. Its how you prolong the life of a game/product.. by introducing stuff later on making it more attractive and getting more sales. Although, the combat zone cut content must just have missed deadlines.
@Derumana Story Again.. not really. When you make an engine overhaul, it takes a lot more time which could have been the case for fallout 3. Fallout NV, 4 etc. Were just modifying the engine based on what worked for them etc. in fallout 3. Even this is just an assumption.
I agree your frustrated and as a customer, it's annoying when delays are there and that's a just complaint, but this is just an FYI that many things could be happening which we don't know about so blindly calling them lazy is just utter disregard and disrespectful.
@Derumana Story When I said engine overhaul, it does not necessarily mean making the new engine. There is engine integration into a game as well. Dude... Stop nitpicking words and read/imagine the overall process. Stop arguing for the sake of arguing without an understanding of the business or process
Secondly, only game engine developers have specific project times associated with creating an engine (sometimes even that's not the case). Game devs have to include new engine and graphics integration as a part of original project schedule. Again.. this is from my development experience and not Bethesda facts.

If they take the rules so seriously, why did they break rule #1 as soon as you were spotted? Both versions are ok in their own ways, but both have their flaws.
Lab Matt The version they put in the game is shit. It's not even lore friendly for the lore within the game, the fact all those rules are posted and they even have rulebreakers chained up out front to show what happens, then they attack you the moment you walk in. At least this mod puts the vast majority of the cut content back in and gives you something to do within the Combat Zone. The cut content shows how great a job BGS really can do, especially with a bigger work force and hopefully we may even see what they can do with the new studio etc.
But then again, look at bethesda now, they obviously do not care for their lore or roleplay games and rely on use to fill in the gaps.
whole dungeon was flawed, but whatever more content is more content. but i dont blame them for shipping it the way it was.
They show that they take the rules seriously, but you don't know if the rule breakers found broke rule one. One of them says they didn't have caps, plus the reason they attack you is because you aren't a raider. In the cut content, Tommy says rule one is withheld if you refuse to fight.
There are two reasons that I can think of for Cait being let go in the cut version:
1 She was an 'arena favorite', meaning it's harder to make a profit when there's a 'sure thing', even if you're the type to rally for the underdog.
2 She was indeed getting strung out and sloppy. Some random stranger told to practically fight in skivvies with just an improvised 'shield' of a pip boy and their fists took out the stated 'favorite'. Sure, a massive turnaround of the favorite biting it can be a well to do windfall for some, but it's also highly shortsighted, especially if the 'old mare' can clean herself up and come back for the potential rematch. In our times, at least, that'd fill seats.
Yeah, lets threaten the dude who just walked in here with a full set of power armor and a fully auto plasma rifle, what could go wrong?

It DOES make sense that Tommy wouldn't want Cait in the cut content, which is a far better version than what we got. You have two choices, beat Cait in which case she's no longer undefeated and is therefore no longer Tommy's star fighter or you refuse and you kill all of his audience.
The far more likely reason that the content was cut was to soften it and lessen the amount of abuse Cait is shown to take in the full version.
Yeah this and Easy City Downs, really wish they were usable in game, would have give a bit more life to the Commonwealth.
I think Tommy really cared for Cait in both. He try’s to sound hard, but he really does care in his own way. In both the game content and even in the cut content( though he is a harder man)

I wish they'd done more with Tommy in the published version. It kind of bothered me that there was no interaction with him if you brought Cait back to the Combat Zone post-cure.

with everything Bethesda neglected to finish on this game, it makes them seem either too ambitious amongst themselves or lazy. because this game could have been great if they finished it! with all of the story and lore that I'm hearing about being left out, it sounds like a finished fallout 4 would be much closer to how great new Vegas was.
I get the feeling they just were too ambitious and were coming up against a bunch of deadlines someone didn't want pushed back. That's usually the case in these sorts of AAA games

The Combat Zone was also the name of the red light district of Boston in the same area of the city after the Second World War

And still is, according to Parker. I never heard the term when I was there but I knew the district (always ate Chinese after working at the Huntington Stage.) One of the more ham-handed bits of "Bahstan" Lore the FO4 developers put in.

Why in the world did they cut this? At least with the whole cut content with Danse, there were lore and storytelling reasons.

Maybe Tommy would send Cait away to clean her up a bit, and you do all that stuff with curing her and shit. Then next time you bring Cait back to the Combat Zone Tommy sees that she's much more capable and wants her back. Cait refuses, and Tommy offers you a considerable sum for his star fighter back. You have the choice to be evil and sell Cait back (maybe she dies in the next fight because she is so heartbroken over the fact that only friend/lover abandoned her), or refuse Tommy's offer, to which he'll get angry and send all the raiders after both of you, and you are tasked with killing Tommy and his crew. Plus it would have been nice to indulge in some raider pleasures without buying Nuka World instead of this goody two-shoes vanilla game.
Its easy to farm caps here if you have a Ripper maybe that's why they cut it

Nah, they dont care so much if players break the game. Or at least they use to, think back to their earlier works. The reason this was cut was from a mixture of bad business management, bad payment strategies, and a decaying code of quality.

Tommy only says no guns no power armor. Oxhorn didn't take a melee with, but I'm sure you could. Even the raider shown in the second fight is using a machete.

When I first discovered the location and all the raiders attacked me as soon as I entered, I thought it was a glitch. I even reloaded a previous save and went back again, but nope.
I honestly thought it was going to be a sort of fight club or something.

If you pay attention its clear why he sent her with you in the cut content. He wanted her to get away from the arena so she can get clean because he does in fact care about her as seen when he threatens to gut you from your balls to your eyes. Even though she's his star fighter he can see that she's getting sloppy due to being constantly high all the time and knows it's only a matter of time before she makes a mistake in the ring and gets killed and he most certainly doesn't want to see that.

Well considering this was a major talking/selling point during one reveal a lot of people were pissed bethesda in typical fashion half-assed and rushed a title rather then letting it cook and be something great. In short, if they did finish it and put it in the game, it would have been one less thing to complain about.

One thing though @Oxhorn, if Tommy cares about Cait, seeing her survive so many fights, he knew that inevitably, she would lose, and he didn't want that. This added depth to their relationship, and made the scene better.
The cut scene would still be relevant with this in mind, but I guess they had to choose to either cut or improve the content within a deadline. Deadlines suck. I really liked the cut content, it would make the vanilla game so much better! Thanks for sharing it. :D
This made me think... There needs to be a mod that makes a certain faction believe you are one of them if you wear their outfits/uniforms. If you wear raider clothes, raiders will become passive, if you wear gunner uniforms, gunners will become passive, and so on. Not only would that be fun for stealthily making your way through dungeons, but it would also make raider/gunner playthroughs a lot easier.
Papa John's Cena like the faction disguise mod in skyrim, i have fo4 on ps4 right now so i cant get that but id be surprised if its not on necus by now, those tend to be some of the first mods made for bethesda games

I think he let Cait go in the cut content because he didn't want her to die, and lose his best source of caps.
The cut content still makes sense lorewise. Tomm still acts ruthless because he still has his clientele. He needs tos tay in character. Specially since he also sees you are like his clients. And sends Cait away because he sees you wont be here forever and he wants Cait to become clean. He still cares for her, that is why he begs of you to not kill her.
It would have veen cool to get a quest to restore the Combat Zone to its "more legitimate" state as Tommy puts it. Take ou the raiders and bring other people that want to fight. And that way, there are two types of fights. Normal ones and deathmatches. Normal ones, you dont kill the person if you dont want to. Deathmatches are to the death. And maybe even more types, like 2v2s or a 4 man free for all, etc.
Also, it would have been cool to set Cait as a final boss in teh combat arena, instead of just fighting her from the start. Making you fight 3 or 4 raiders, and then Tommy seizes you up to be good enough for Cait. Of course, have a hard charisma vheck to convince Tommy to fight Ait from the beginning for those who just want to speed run through it.

Oh, and that dialogue about how "I see the way you're lookin' at me.." _was_ in the game without having to be restored. She says it all the time. Along with "None of your damn business.." should you catch her doing Psycho.
Todd howard. One of the heads, he forgot what it was like being at the bottom, and what made a great rpg a Role play game. Now they think a good rpg is to just give you a big empty world to explore.

New vegas and 4 are different games with different goals, 4 was very ambitious and had a lot of great things for it, I won't deny that. But it's story is short and the world is empty. Sure you have a ton of npcs to shoot. But maybe I would like to not play a violent sociopath the fallout games had a trend of being able to use charisma and intellect to talk your way out of certain situations. 4 is more of a modern shooter with some rpg elements.

john grinwis Shame Todd Howard and Bethesda forgot story is kind of important for a fallout role play game.
Actually, it is entirely the fault of Zenimax and their shitty overlord payment systems, which forces developers to cut content and publish a game unfinished. All to make their deadline, because if not, they will not get paid for their work at all.

The cut Combat Zone content could've been expanded upon by adding a quest that made you help Tommy get rid of the raiders and find new clientele. You could've either helped Tommy get rid of the raiders or let the raiders continue to run the joint. Tommy could've easily been putting that facade up so he can keep the raiders at bay. It's like the motto at Bethesda is "Don't get too ambitious" or something. So much potential
To me with the content restored it sounds a lot like the Thorn in New Vegas with the arena matches
For all the people saying Bethesda is lazy for cutting the other Combat Zone content... Perhaps you don't realize but in game development things are always planned and worked on that never make it into the game. Sometimes it's things they just couldn't get working correctly in time and they had to change plans. Or sometimes the developers change their minds mid-stream and go a different direction. I can't say which happened with the Combat Zone, but it's not a mark of being lazy, that's just how things go in game development. Still they must have been pretty far in when they changed it, if so much voice acting was done and left in.
I was one of those people who felt that the way it is in game was a waste of a potentially interesting area. I had hope that later on they would expand on it. Like one of the DLCs would have the place opening back up. But it never happened. I downloaded the mod and started a new raider character to take advantage of it, but I haven't been there yet. It certainly will add to playing a character who is a rougher, or even raider type.
I do think that it makes sense Tommy wants Cait gone, even in the restored content. Sure he's more of a jerk as we can see, but the concern for Cait is still there. He knows that as long as she stays, she's not going to get off the chems and eventually she's going to die in the ring. Which honestly, is what she wants. Maybe he'd be losing his star attraction sending her with the player, but he's going to lose her soon either way. The question is does he want to watch her die in the ring or not? Possibly throwing her out with someone to watch her back will let her get off the chems. At the very least, he won't have to watch her die. Maybe not the most compassionate response, but he'll freely admit he's not a nice guy.

The funny thing is that I just walked in and tried talking to a raider when I entered and I was like "WTF" WHEN HE ATTACKED
They cut most of the content here because it wouldn't make any sense.
The Player's probably killed dozens of Raiders by the time they find the Combat Zone. Fewer Raiders means fewer fighters, fewer fighters means less variables, less variables means fewer Caps for Tommy and the Gamblers.
Attempting to kill the Player on-sight would've been the logical course of action, as it would bring Raiders back to Boston, and have Tommy and the Gamblers swimming in Caps, as Raiders from as far as The Pitt would've been coming to see the Player's corpse, and meet the Player's killers, but that doesn't happen. The Player slaughters Tommy's employees and his patrons after they make their fatal mistake. Tommy essentially turns Cait over to the Player as a "Peace Offering", to keep himself from being killed, either by the Player's hand or by Cait's, as she would've eventually snapped from Psycho withdrawal.
Fallout 4 has plenty of other shit that doesn't make sense.

Cut content looks dope. Must remember to check it out for myself. Reminds me of the arena in Oblivion. Also Ox, has anyone told you that you sound like David Costabile?
What they could have also done is keep it so that you have to eliminate the raiders, then have a personal match between you and Cait.
Once you win, you get to have her as a companion. It could have some cut dialogue that shows more about Cait and why she's miserable, and we still have the outcome from the released game.

The combat zone and the underwater vault thing cut from the game would have made the game way better
I noticed that in the Mod, Stanley asks the PC what gang they're with; does the combat zone take Nuka World's raider culture into account?
Also, I think it still makes sense that Tommy would want Cait to get clean, considering he still mentions that the chems are making her sloppy. A sloppy fighter is a dead fighter right? And a dead fighter is no star.
Tommy says it himself in the cut content “that stuff is making you sloppy, and I don’t want to be the one giving color commentary when you hit the floor” he wants her to get clean and harden up while he gets all his apples in a bunch. When he has the arena up and running he will take her back clean and waste land hardened for her new act. Except the combat zone stays empty
In the Cut Content, Tommy doesn't lose his star, he replaces Cait with you since you beat her.
I would argue that even though Tommy still has clientele he would still want Cait to get off the chems, you could see it as either he would prefer his star fighter to be clean giving credence to Cait's later dialog of "This might have been Tommy's plan all along." Or that he is putting on the tough facade since he does still have clientele and you will be a fighter your self so he has to keep up appearances. People are complex creatures an in the post apocalypse weakness would be the surest way to death, a Businessman like Tommy would understand the dynamic better than anyone.
Actually, the way cait celebrate for victory really looks like "WE ARE NUMBER ONE!"

Cait wasn't enjoying us clearing out the place because we were winning. She was enjoying us delivering justice to those who abused her.

The cut version looks like more fun. The reason for Cait leaving doesn't make sense in that version, but a small change to the dialogue would fix that; if he felt the clients wouldn't take well to Cait getting back in the ring having lost a fight (since fights are usually to the death there for no one else comes back after a loss) it would make sense why he'd want to send her away because she'd no longer be good for business.
Hi oxhorn, I had an idea for a video I'd love to watch!!! Ofc just because I would doesn't mean others would, that being said a video about which of the 4 major factions would win the war if you the sole survivor were not a factor in it! Now this vid will require a lot if not only lore to back it up but also a little theory and or analytical mindset, or just an amazing imagination ;).
