My grandmother has Alzheimer's, and she is incapable to do anything. We had to put her in a care center, because she is in bed all day and can't even talk. People say that it's wrong to put people in care centers, but they don't understand how necessary it can be sometimes. I know it probably makes me a bad person, but I don't visit her much. I can't bare to see her in that state. Last time I visited her, on Christmas, I couldn't help myself from crying. I grew up with her caring for me and playing with me while my parents were at home, and it pained me to see her slowly lose her mind.

You're not a bad person. That was your grandmother... WAS. The alzheimers took that person and what's left is a body being kept alive. It's sad, but sometimes we have to grieve a loss before they're entirely gone. I'd never want to exist in that state and I've clearly outlined to my family what I want should I become unresponsive. I'd never want my family or anyone else to see me like that...

    • @lilzombiegurl6431

I work in care as a care assistant and I do recommend you see your grandmother.
You will regret not going when she's gone.(That sounds horrible I know)
I also know what you are going through because my dad has dementia he's 69(I'm 23 he had me a lot later in life) and I hate seeing him lose himself to dementia but he is my dad and I want to spend as much time as I can with him because you never know how much time he has left.
I don't want to make you feel guilty or make you feel like a bad person because you are not.
But I have worked with the elderly. I have seen them cry for their families and because they feel lost. They want to go home but they can't.
It doesn't matter how far their dementia has gone because it affects them all.
Theres a lady I look after and she can't do anything for herself. she can't walk, talk, feed herself, toilet herself or bathe herself. She just sits in a chair all day either sleeping or staring at a wall but sometimes her personalty comes through and when her children come in the day she can sometimes recognise them and she smiles. Sometimes when I look at her she gives me no reaction at all and other times she will smile at me.
So this is coming from a carers point of view when it breaks my heart when families don't go see them because a lot of people think "well my family member is gone they are not there any more because of dementia", they sometimes come back for bit even if it's for 5 minutes and they are the moments you don't want to miss.

@@lilzombiegurl6431 I second what you said. I lost my mother the day before Christmas Eve 2018; she'd been suffering from COPD and CHF. She died at home, as she was living with me, and she didn't die in pain, but even with that being the case - even being there for her - I have all sorts of regrets for things I never said, and never got to apologize for, and never do. At the end, we had a hard time getting her out of the house, so I couldn't take her to see Christmas lights or anything. I was stressed about my job, and she needed *a lot* of help with things, so sometimes I said mean things, though not at all right before her end.
Seriously - say what have to say IMMEDIATELY. Do what you can with her. If you can get her to take a ride with you out of the nursing home, or house, or whatever, DO IT. I can tell you - you will regret it later if you don't.

I once worked in an elderly care home for the memory impaired. They often wanted to leave and find the nearest bus stop but we had to kindly explain to them that the bus isn't coming for a couple of hours and they might sit down for a cup of coffee, and serve them a snack. They forgot that they wanted to leave soon enough. It repeated day after day, we just made them feel as comfortable and cared for as we could, but a minority never adjusted.

Dantyx1 we had to do that at the retirement home I worked at. I was front desk night shift and stopped many residents from wandering off. It’s sad when they come down and you ask them “well, darling, what’re you doing up at this time of the night?” And they say they don’t know, or that they’re going home, but they need their car key. I had to tell one of them “well it’s awfully cold out there tonight, and dark. Why don’t you get some sleep and head off tomorrow morning once the suns up and it’s warmed up a bit? It’s no fun trying to drive at night, especially when it’s so cold”
I had one come to me saying he couldn’t find his car and he and his wife had to leave at 5 am. I told him I’d try to find his car for him and he said okay and that he’d told her to go on back to sleep. There was no car. There was no wife. That one had me break down crying right there at the desk.

My understanding is that having a fake bus stop outside of a nursing home isn't that uncommon. Nursing home patients often have different levels of dementia or alzheimer's disease. They may forget that they live there and will try to get on a bus at the nearest bus stop to go back to whatever home they're recalling at that time. I don't think it is a plot to limit the freedom of sound minded people, but a way to find a patient that has slipped out. Nursing homes do often bring up depressing feelings with seeing a large number of elderly making us think of our own potential decline, however, the reality is the elderly can reach a state of requiring 24/7 care. Especially if they're not of sound mind they may become a danger to themselves or others.

the shitty rowboat might have been his favourite because he obviously loved fishing, as evidenced by his fishing pole in the tub. probably childhood memories of fishing in a shitty rowboat.
also regarding the hunter's trophies and the cats still being alive, remember that the robots are still doing their jobs. these old folks might have survived the bombs for a while. the cats might have continued to be fed by the robots, which would also explain the fish in the kitchen still having flesh on them, instead of skeletal.

The feeling I got when watching this is that the residents lived on after the bombs dropped, being cared for by the robots and dying of old age. This would explain the mutated hunted animals that are mounted on the wall. Perhaps the skeleton crushed by the bookcase was the one human nurse in the place that died when it fell onto her as a result of the earth shacking from the bombs, and none of the residents where able bodied enough to help her.

After all, the employees wouldn't give a knife and grenades to someone who really shouldn't have access to that stuff, and she couldn't have possibly hidden that stuff in a large chest. I took this place completely opposite of how you did. I saw it as a nice place that allowed residents to persue their hobbies & interests, have activites with others, and thrive. "Convalescent" is a term for someone recovering; perhaps Gladys was recovering from mental trauma of some sort that caused her to feel the need to "escape?" It's never confirmed that the residents are elderly so there could have also been young residents recovering from different things. Do you really think an evil old folks home would let one of the residents keep multiple pets? I doubt maintaning the robot staff was cheap, either.

While nursing homes seem horrible, one thing to remember is that in the past lives were shorter, you only took care of your parents for a handful of years before they died. It's one thing to take care of someone who drops swiftly from full ability to death in 3 or 4 years, its another to take care of someone who doesn't remember you (but remembers a lifetime of profanity) and is as helpless as a baby for decades.

I think you misunderstand the part with the bus stop.
That's a common practice in such homes because of dementia and has nothing to do with keeping people against their will.
Well, more or less. They just tend to forget where and when they are as they lose recent memory. When they get bad, they try to run home at a pace they normally could not reach because they just forget about their age and pain. They even run from their childhood homes, trying to return just there because they want to go to a version of it from their youth. It's a sad state of affairs, but a reality when dealing with the elderly. They simply cannot be reasoned with because the world turns confusing and scary around them. Keeping them from running off is in their best interest. Many would just die in a ditch because they march till they collapse or regain clarity, finding themselves in a random location. Often in bad weather and not properly dressed.

Joyce Lee Once a person is to the point that they are wondering off, they need to be monitored to keep them safe, and many families can't afford to quit working and stay at home. While it may sound ugly to many, it is also a lifestyle change that a lot of people are not willing to make. There are people that take on that responsibility of caring for a loved one, but for those who cannot there are facilities staffed with the purpose of keeping your loved one's safe. Nursing homes only ever come up in public discourse when something bad happens, so it is understandable that some people may have ill feelings of those types of facilities or ministries. I have worked in geriatric nursing for close to a decade now, and those stories that come up in the news very rarely cover the understaffing, the over working, hours and benefits cut, poor management, or any other host of issues that causes the burnout level that leads to an act of abuse or neglect.

    1. The Institute regulary sends synth-looter quads to the surface. Most of their radiant quests are based around this. Therefore it's likely they are there for the chems.
    2. I think we can all agree that it isn't a good idea to let your looters roam around without protection or combat protocols. I think they are programmed to kill all robots and living beings, for they are mostly hostile. An extra protocol to spare cats would be unnecessary, complicated and would slow down the reaction time of the synths.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 6 років тому +11

they kind of are, but not everyone there is on the brink of death. I worked at a rehabilitation & health facility. there’s different departments within the facility so people with the same needs are kept together, or relocated based on their needs. one resident I know of is in her 30s and is wheelchair bound due to a car accident. she even uses a catheter and colostomy bag. she still gets around and is allowed to leave-she likes to go gambling at the Chinese restaurant around the corner. so nursing homes aren’t always prisons of death, sometimes they’re apartment complexes for the very disabled :) ! Edit: we do mostly have old people though. that woman is just an example of different circumstances.

As for why synths show up there, I think they're there for the chems. Remember; the Institute, as perfect as it seems on the inside, actually is having a problem with resources. While they no doubt can make their own chems, it probably drains less resources to scavenge them from places that already have many chems. They heard a rumor about a deserted building that probably had chems in it just waiting to be taken, so they sent some synths to take them. I doubt they were trying to kill surface dwellers because 1: the Institute seems to believes that the surface world is doomed and will simply die out naturally rather than them needing to cause it and 2: um, the building's empty except for some robots and a cat. Killing off surface dwellers is kind of hard when you send synths to unoccupied buildings.

...So why did they send synths to ruin the Commonwealth Coalition?

    • @ZeonicFenrir
      @ZeonicFenrir 2 роки тому

@@willj1443 We actually don’t know for sure, we only have Nick’s third party account to believe that, which in itself already sounds fishy when it says that every human was killed by a synth, yet obviously someone would have needed to survive to tell the tale.
Also, the director recording in the Institute indicates that their plan was imply going into hiding, not go out and slaughter the CPG, which they actually tried to help for 4 years, even after it was falling part.
Lastly, let’s not forget the internal chaos in University Point: on one hand we are told that Institute sightings (synths) were a very rare sight, with younger people even assuming they were a boogieman’s story made up by their parents & elderly.
On the other one, Kellogg didn’t arrive guns blazing: he actually came in, talked with them, demanding the data they found… and only that, yet the townsfolk began spinning it into the Institute demanding that they turn in the girl who found it and later that the Institute came for everyone’s children. All these you can find in the internal mail entries of the settlement, as well as indications of impeding infighting, which if it actually came to that, gave Kellogg more reason to move in and secure the data before it was destroyed during the conflict.

As others said, they were likely just programmed to shoot fast moving creatures in the surface, 90% of which they do are trying to kill anything that they run into (radrats, radroaches, mole rats, etc.) so their actions make sense, even if it’s regrettable that the cats themselves hadn’t the intention to attack.

(6:40) There's no telling what sentimental value that rowboat model held for Mortimer.
(8:00) I prefer to think that Gladys got away completely and did what she could for the survivors of the war before dying gloriously in battle.
(8:35) The robots had probably assume some of the duty of taking care of Catherine's cats. They probably never noticed that new cats took the place of the ones that died, and cats kept coming because the robots kept putting food and water out.
(10:05) I suspect the mounted mutant heads are "poetic license", since pre-war animal heads are not included in the games development assets.
(15:55) There's a similar "bigger boat" scene in the river near Cambridge Polymer Labs.

    Great video Oxhorn..
This one hit a little too close to home
I took care of my mother, who passed away from emphysema. The same year she passed my grandma got diagnosed with progressive dementia. so I began taking care of her, I was lucky enough to start working from home because she had a tendency to start stovetop fires, or just wander off. All I can say is its non-stop hard work, and not everyone can do it.
With most of my family being selfish douches, I knew I was all she had, and there was no way I could let the 2 women who helped raise me, be left to strangers. This is not something anyone should be forced to do alone, so if you know anyone who is taking care of a loved one by themselves, try and stop by once a week at least and give them a few hours to take care of themselves. Care Giver Burn Out is a horrible experience.
I spent the last 10 years of my life watching the 2 most important people In my life wither and pass away.(3 years with my mom, and 7 with my grandmother) I wouldn't wish that experience on my worst enemy, and as painful as it was. I'd do it all over again if I had too.

Well if you just unloaded that....I guess I should say my story?......
      (I am an older teen)
When I was younger, like 13, 14, I used to help care for my grandmother, who lived with my family. Nothing like you had to, though. I was supposed to help with giving her her medication, moving her oxygen tank around, wake her in the morning, and stuff like that. Now being the bastard kid I was, i resented my job. I loved my grandmother, but I was immature, lazy, and an ass back then. Sometimes I lashed out when she tried to ask me for something. Then.....then she died. About five weeks after her 79th birthday, she died in her sleep on December 24th. Could you imagine what it is like to try and wake someone, but after a while you know they wont, bu you will not believe? As if if you believe enough, it wont be true. Anyway, I look back, and I regret. I regret a lot. But....but one cannot turn back the steady wheels of time, sailing down the river of history, only to move on and look to the horizon, the future.......

3:45 you missed something of a cue here; inside the locked door you had a magazine about sedation and a syringer rifle with a pax syringe nearby. These are both cues as to how the convalescent home recaptured escapees: by shooting them with sedatives and dragging them back. Furthermore, I believe that there was some sort of scam going in here; in the terminal they talk about being worried about the police finding out what they're up to. I also find it strange that they bother listing where their residents keep their safe keys. I think what they were doing was selling chems that had been prescribed to their residents, and the reason they had to stop residents from escaping at any cost was because they could not afford for any of them to inform the police. So, in my mind, not only did they prevent residents from leaving, but they denied them the medicine they needed so they could sell it on the black market themselves.

The practices used by this home are actually extremely common. A lot of elderly people who have been moved into a group home like this have dementia of some kind. They know that the group home isn't where they used to live but they don't remember why they aren't at their old house, so many try to "go home." Many, many group homes use decoy bus stops to keep escapees from getting too far.
I'm sure that many families would prefer that their elderly loved ones could stay in their original homes with assisted care or even move in with them, but for many families, that just isn't feasible. And some of the residents may no longer have family that care, so a group home is the only option.

It depends on the individual, if a person has dementia or severe altsheimers, that' can simply be too much for someone to handle. People literally train and learn for years how to care for people with these conditions professionally, and sometimes it's just too much to deal with alone. There isn't shame necessarily in placing an elderly relative in care, it may be the responsible decision. There's only sahem if you don't care, and don't put in the effort to make their life better.

So many times I have seen well meaning stubborn families, who aren't professionals, let their loved ones end up with horrifying wounds (that can develop in days or hours). Health conditions can deteriorate, and all because they weren't properly trained. The important thing is to be present; visit, bring important things from home, call, support your loved one who is in a nursing home. Most places are no where near this bad and there are governing institutions that will not tolerate bad conditions.

Used to work in Geri psych. We had people try to escape all the time. In their minds they were 20 years old and their small child is home and needs to be taken care of. They always thought their house was just around the corner and they could walk home when in fact the home their thinking of is 5 states away. The fakebbus stop idea is actually genius. Families spread out, people leave older now and have more complex care. 50 years ago they were dead by 70 75, now people live into their 90s if you take the right combination of drugs. Some people need round the clock care, getting homecare takes a lot of paperwork and in lots of cases$$. Most families keep relatives home until something dangerous happens, like they wander out at night in 10 degree weather, or swan dive off the kitchen table into the "pool" which was actually white kitchen tile. These people need 24/7 care which is much harder when all the children work (50 years ago the wife usually didnt work, daughters ended up taking care of parents). But in the end nicer nursing homes tend not too take govt insurance, cuts in medicare medicaid effect them first.

Having worked in a nursing home, "escaped" makes perfect sense. I'm not saying this particular nursing home was a wonderful place and no one was being held against their will, but a lot of residents in nursing homes suffer from dementia. We had to have alarms on all of the doors in case someone accidentally wandered out the doors. And I do mean accidentally. We had residents that would walk into any room and think it was theirs, sitting down or going to sleep in a different residents bed and the like. Residents that DID manage to get out were often found wandering near the road, confused. They had no idea where they were or what they were doing. So assuming all of these residents were trying to "escape" is a bit disingenuous, not knowing whether or not the residents suffered from some kind of dementia, or if they had no where to go TO. There are too many families that dump their "loved" ones there and then forget about them.

Interestingly, for me, the Institute showed up very shortly after I arrived (I had just gone around the back to explore the kitchen).
Also, I think the bottlecaps were for checkers, rather than chess. Maybe they couldn't afford a real set?
    Great videos! Keep it up!

Maybe the reason that the rowboat was Mortimer's favourite could be becasue he used to spend a lot of time around them, and it makes him nostalgic. He could be the Boston groundkeeper.

    • @raynes6286

Josh Zaragoza Can't see them wiping out the BoS, the Minuitmen are essential and the RR make a good plot line and are more of an idea than a cause.
So probably an Institute destruction ending, maybe the one where everyone else lives.

    • @evanulven8249
      @evanulven8249 7 років тому +9

That would mean the Minutemen ending would be canon. With the evac order, the Railroad just needs to focus on inserting the synths into society. The BoS no longer has it's objective in the Commonwealth and will likely leave, because only fools think the non-lyons BoS actually gives a shit about anyone but themselves. They can't stay on to lean on the Institute survivors, because that would get their asses bloodily kicked by the Minutemen and the people of the Commonwealth.
MM ending lets all the loose ends get tied up nicely.

fallout4 just doesn't make any sense sometimes..how could those fishes not be decomposed after 200 yrs?,same in the fish packing factory?, why would the residents be playing chess with bottle caps and not actual chess pieces?,it's like Bethesda says well these are the stuff we've coded and we never did chess pieces so fuck it just put bottle caps in there and fish heads, let's hope no one notices lol...could be raiders or scavengers but wouldn't the robots stop them?..lazy

My guess as far as the fish in the convalescent home goes, they're probably not 200 years old. It's likely that the robots were programmed to take care of the cats, and fed them with fish. As time went by, the cats probably left, found other living feral cats, mated, brought their offspring back here, etc. All that time the robots would find fish somehow to prepare into food for the cats. The robots weren't programmed to notice there was anything unusual about taking care of cats for 200 years and probably didn't even notice they weren't the same ones. Explains why there's still cats here; probably they're descendants of the ones belonging to the resident. And the robots keep feeding those descendants.

I used to work in a nursing home, and we used the term escaped, because when the paitient is so senile they actually belive they are 10 and are expected home or else their parents will worry, they intentionally go when nobody is looking. More then once I had to go fetch a patient.
That letter you wrote is a perfect example to how my experience.

maybe Mortimer liked the simple row boat because it was the very first boat model that he had? or maybe it was sentimental for him?

  • @Charlie-yt9pu

I reckon "Mortimer's favourite ship" has personal value, maybe a childhood toy? That explains how worn it was and it explains it's simplicity. Sometimes the value of the most simple of things is tripled by personal attachment.

I was once kept in a psych ward against my will for psychiatric treatment. The conditions were abysmal. It was cold, the beds were hard as a rock, and you weren't allowed to wear more than the gown they gave you. There were cameras everywhere, and we couldn't even go outside for fresh air. Something about the atmosphere Bethesda put together gave me flashbacks when I first entered and had a look around.

My explaination for the synths is they are a salvage team. Not something really explored in game (unfortunately) but we know the Institute sends synths to scavenge for resources. This may not have been sent for any one purpose but just a general scavenging run. Just happens they were going in to see what useful things they could find while you were doing the same.

There is another nod towards the Jaws movie where you find the boat. If you go into the water there is a cage stuck in the sandy bottom of the ocean that is damaged and has a skeleton in it along with some goodies. I found it when exploring and actually got stuck in the cage for a bit.

Hey Oxhorn thinking about the synths killing the robots. I remember Valentine mentioned how older generation Synths would go killing everyone in a town looking for spare parts. Maybe that's what they are doing at Sandy Coves, the large number of robots may have advance components and circuits the Synths need to repair themselves. The Institute sure doesn't seem to keep them on a regular maintenance schedule so maybe older Synths are programmed to seek out nearby resources to effect self maintenance and repair.

The bus stop thing is apoarently common irl. They may have an actual bus stop at the corner but they put one close to the door. Its due to people with dementia and alzheimers, people who would get hurt if they wandered off from the home they were in, hence escapees irl
