Your explanation is all wrong🤣. The grip is at the outer wheel coz all the weight of the car is been forced onto it in a corner. With open diff, all power goes path of least resistance, causing unloaded inside wheel to spin up.. and no power going to loaded outside wheel. Lsd forces equal power to both wheels, thus driving that heavily loaded outer wheel which will greatly help pull u out of the corner.
Adam Dare Adam Dare Not in an understeer scenario, as mentioned in the video 😉 although you are correct in the sense the torque naturally follows the path of least resistance.
However, your explanation is also ‘all wrong.’ An open differential doesn’t cause the inside wheel to spin up and a limited slip differential doesn’t send the same amount of torque to both drive shafts (quite the opposite!), which is the appeal of a limited slip differential.
It’s a difficult subject to put in to words, but the way LSD’s work is really clever and I find it quite interesting!

The description you give in the video really is wrong man. As Adam said the outside wheel will have the most grip as the cornering forces load up the outside tyres. More downwards force on the outside tyres = more grip. With an open diff the inside wheel will loose traction and spin. The grippy outside wheel can then only be sent the same torque as the spinning inside wheel which is not very much.
The idea of these diffs is to increase traction on corner exit by sending more torque to the OUTSIDE wheel so you can get on the power more and earlier without wheel spin.

Struggling to find a used ST with performance pack. Looking at well species ST3 without one. Do you think it will still handle well for a spirited drive on B roads in the dry?I don’t plan to use Track mode but want to exploit some of its power on the back roads without going mad.

I got my st with performance pack a couple of weeks ago, can't fault it. I've not gone beyond sport mode, the car feels like it has limitless grip and linear power throughout the rev range. It doesn't have big boost like a big turbo engine (I'm coming from an old impreza WRX), but begs to be tested on a track, which it will make you want to do as soon as you get one.
My car has engine performance level high launch control does that mean it has the performance pack. Unsure about the amber ST light that came up next to the 1k rev as of yet thanks people

Nothing bests a proper plated diff, like Drexler/Gripper/Kaaz etc.

I ordered black ST with performance pack. Do I have to select "launch control" always from the menu option when I use that? Or does it stay activated?
Spoolin´ Shirley If you keep you menu on ‘Ford Performance’ (where it displays your current speed), as soon as you come to a standstill, it will give you the option to enable launch control. Simply hit OK on the wheel and you are ready to go. So it’s nearly always ready to go... Enjoy the new ST!
The car I’m looking at ford fiesta st-2 2018. has engine performance level high launch control does that mean it has the performance pack and the quaife diff?. Unsure about the amber ST light that came up next to the 1k rev as of yet thanks people
Thought I'd leave a comment, I know it's an old video but I hope this will help some people, I've just bought an st3, I went for one with sunroof and lsd instead of performance pack, I couldn't afford one with all 3 and decided that I'd get more use out of the sunroof (coming from a z4) and the snazzier lights. Now I haven't driven one with the diff but the standard car still navigates corners in a way that can only be described as silly, puts a smile on your face every time. Do I regret not getting it? A little but it's still a Fiesta st which means it's still a barrel of laughs

Lsd is in performance pack. You say you got lsd... Do you have a shift light and launch control?

It was possible to fit an LSD to a MK7, so it’s probably possible to fit to a MK8 without Performance pack, but definitely cheaper to buy the PP from the outset! I know the process of fitting a diff is quite labour intensive.

I'd like to know about the launch control is there a set amount of times it can be used? I'm worried about clutch damage as I plan to buy a used one
Dunno... but one UA-camr (Vehicle Virgins) clocked up 250 on his Lambo and all of a sudden he could not longer do launch control. What I can tell you, you should only use it when you really need it because it will wear the clutch quicker.
I think the older Seat Leon Cupra's (2014-16) could only launch 3 times then void the warranty. What's the point😂?

I see your car has rev matching during downshifts. (Or doesn’t it??) is it an option that you have to choose when ordering or is it there automatically when you are in sport mode?

I hate how scruffy and toolish Launch control is especially when some people are bouncing off the cars rev limiter,and who wants to buy a used car that has performed several hundred launches,somebody told me today more than 3 launches voids warranty so i sked if it is recorded on the cars ECU OR SOMETHING?
Also got told today LED headlights are an option on a ST3,so here we seem to be able to spec a Fiesta like some kind of Mini maybe 6k worth of extra's,well hey i can buy a very low mile 2016 Seat Leon Crupra 290 for just under 16k pounds,i have now driven 3 MK8's and owned a 2015 MK7 ST2 and i will say MK8 is a better daily car IMO!

Does the LSD help increase MPG and reduce tyre wear?
Paul Gibbs Hard to say as I don’t have another car to compare it with. I’m 7000 miles in and even with one (rather damp) track day, tyres still have plenty of tread on them. Couldn’t tell you if that was the LSD however. I doubt it will have an impact on MPG either, but again, I can’t confirm.
My st has the performance pack, buttons and lights, and that's it !, it's an ex demo and the dealer states that the quaife is more money again and not part of the performance pack in mine, is that correct ?. If mine has the button for mapping, including launch control plus the shift lights, would the quaife be automatically included ? Ta.
Michael Hodgson Hi mate, that doesn’t really make sense so the likelihood is that you do have the performance pack. You should be able to feel the diff pulling you out of the corners, too but it may be hard to recognise if you’ve not driven a fiesta without one. Could also pop your details in to Ford Etis as that may have the spec level, but I can’t confirm that :)
@@JBCTR , Hi fella, thanks for showing interest. Quite some years ago, when I had hair, I used to compete in tarmac car rallies, even competed abroad, but all my motors were rear wheel drive. A friend lent me for a classic rally, an ex Paddy Hopkirk circuit of Ireland winning Bmc works mini, you needed arms like a body builder just to hang on to the steering wheel with the LS/diff in, (no power steering ). Family, houses and motorcycles kept me away from sporty cars til this fiesta, downsizing !
There are times with motor flat out going round corners that it feels like it has the quaife in, suddenly darting a little to the right like it's transferred grip, but the bloke at the dealership, selling me this vehicle with oodles of toys on as it was their demonstrater , had no real knowledge of the car, and was under supervision from a manager when asked if the diff was in, said no, it's extra again. It does seem half a job to have the three settings, shift lights and the exhaust valve, and then leave the most useful part out. And, like I said, lots of reviews say get the performance pack because it includes the quaife, which I wanted. I'll try that site you mentioned, cheers.

I’m looking at a st fiesta that looks exactly the same it has ford performance setting / normal sport and track unsure about the gear shift lights but has launch control. How would I know if it definitely has the performance pack thanks

Andrew Maple Not exactly. It’s a mechanical part, so it’s always working. In comfort mode, the electronics will intervene earlier, which prevents you from getting full benefit of the LSD. Sport mode, they intervene very slightly and in race mode you rely solely on mechanical grip from the LSD :)
When buying one, how can you tell if I’m buying the performance pack or not ?
Check in the menus to see if it has launch control. Only performance pack cars have launch, which mean they have the diff :)

MK7 had an e-diff. MK8 has e-diff as standard or a proper mechanical one as part of the performance pack (optional extra)

I really like it. If I get this car I might choose the performance blue, but this one is very interesting too. I always liked black, but I think these 2 colours make it less boring, then just the simple black. Also what fuel consumption do you get with this car?

Nice review but your open diff explanation is wrong.... the outside wheel has the most grip, hence why with an open diff the inside wheel spins up..... understeer is nothing to do with the diff..... it's the laws of physics..... with a limited slip diff.... it's in the name..... it limits wheel slip or wheel spin of the wheel with the least traction ( usually the inside one ) by temporarily locking..... it can't lock permanently as you rightly explained because the wheels need to move at different rotation speeds when you turn..... how a locking diff does counter understeer though, is by locking when wheel slip is about to happen and sending power to the outside which drives you round the corner and thus it gives you the effect of "torque steer"
Understeer is more to do with the outright grip generated by the chassis and tyres.... so an LSD equipped ST and a non LSD equipped ST would still both understeer at the same point as the LSD cannot affect the point when the front tyres grip runs out and so it still wouldn't stop you from understeering off the road..... to counter understeer you need to shift weight over the front axle upon entry to the corner to promote oversteer by either lifting off or braking hard or even by the use of the Scandinavian flick to make the rear of the car become a pendulum.
So an LSD will help with traction not grip hence it works best on the exit of corners and not the entry.... it also works in a straight line but is kind of pointless with launch / traction control in that you don't really need traction / launch control if you have an LSD because they counter act one another.

Not a mistake - it'll still be a great car to drive like the MK7, but it is a great option if you can stretch to it!
I’ve ordered mine without it also. I’ve owned a mk7 for the past 5 years without a fancy diff and that goes round corners very nicely indeed. I’m sure if you’re looking for every last fraction of a second around a lap of a track then the diff will help but in the regular world it’s not worth an extra £850 to me. Equally I don’t need shift lights and surely half of the joy of a manual gearbox is nailing your own launches rather than getting a button to do it. I have thought whether I made a mistake by skipping the performance pack but I don’t believe I have.

I got the performance pack due to everykbe saying it was brilliant.
But i dont think it really is that noticeable over not having it,
The car seems to drive the same as my mk7 which obviously didnt have it, excluding engine differences (the mk8 1.5 is way better than the 1.6 in the mk7 btw)
