  • In today's video I'm back to working on the Grom! I discovered that I was down on speed and usable RPM vs some of the other folks on the race track, so I reached out to DHMotoring for some help.
    Seeing that my Grom must remain internally stock for the Grom Challenge, an intake of sort and a flash was my best option for getting a little more out of the tiny Honda.
    If you need anything for your Grom, be sure to hit David @ DHM up: www.dhmotoring...

    I'm doing mods that still keep my bike looking like stock....wolf in a sheep's clothing type of thing. I've installed an exhaust (looks like stock), high flow oil pump, and did the airbox/stock filter mods. I installed a NGK iridium spark plug and had the ECU remapped and my bike runs 5.4% faster based upon speed runs over the same strip of road I test it. For the time and money ($52US total, where I live) that I've spent, this is hard to beat. Going any further will be a case of greatly diminished returns.

      I like your thinking!! I'm all about bang for buck when it comes to any of my rides! I always look for the mods that will give me the best jump for the least amount of money!!

    Thanks man! My only problem was a sumo wrestler tighten down the lil stock screw on the intake. Had to bust out the dremel.

    I did the intake, exhaust, DHM tune and Koso clutch cover with oil spinner delete. I wanted a little more umph so I just ordered a DHM cam and reflash. Pretty excited. My dad just bought a Honda Monkey so I plan on doing a 25mile run at 55-60 to get there so we can ride together. I don't think I will need to go with a BBK at 5'6" and 165lbs.

      Since I made this video my race org updated the rules to allow for engine mods. Only rule is it has to remain 125cc. So I did the DHM cam and tune to match the intake and exhaust I've got in this video. In my last race with 14/36 gearing I hit 81mph in the draft!!! I'm about 165 with gear on... and I think it's perfect. So I think you'll be good!! No need for BBK in my opinion!!

      I don’t think I’d hit 81 on a grom being 220lbs. Lol I just ordered a Toce exhaust system. Gonna order a chimera intake and get the ECU from next.

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  2 роки тому +1

      The cam made the biggest difference for me. The draft in a race environment also helps me get that top speed. I think if I was solo with no draft it'd read 73-75. Based on what I've seen, I bet you could see mid to high 60s... maybe even 70 with a tune and bolt ons. Both DHM and Cameron Jones Racing have really good tunes for the Grom when you get the exhaust and intake on!

      @@TonyGenerali Eventually I would do a cam. Yeah gonna go with DHM, they actually just authorized a dealer in Houston so I'll be able to get to the actual place without mailing in my ECU.

    I'm thinking of doing this next. Have you changed your gearing around at all?

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  4 роки тому +1

      Gearing is 100% stock... I would love to change it, but the race org requires all the groms to have stock gearing. Keeps the racing closer...
      But I have heard that messing around with different front/rear sprockets really brings the bike to life!

  • @dyi01
    @dyi01 4 роки тому +3

    If you're not gonna use the front half of the airbox, there's no point in keeping the snorkel, its just extra weight.

    What rear sets do you have on?

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  Рік тому

      They're the Driven rear sets. They're good, but the pegs are on the expensive side to replace and they literally disintegrate in a crash. If I had to do it again, I'd go for the Woodcrafts.

      @@Ivanrivera.83 that's the case for a lot of people. On right handers you have to adjust your throttle hard... making it harder to get lower for lots of people.

    should I go back to running in oil when installing a new cam?

      Sorry my bike is just has just run in so I have put Motul 300v in it, when I put the new cam in should I use the original oil that come in the bike so it wears in or don't worry about it and continue with the Motul sorry Mate

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  4 роки тому +1

      Ahhhh. I got it. Keep the 300v in it. Motel is the best oil you can run in my opinion. You should be able to install the cam without losing any oil anyway, so no need to mess with it!

    I saw you hit 64mph is this with stock sprockets as well?

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah. This was with stock sprockets. I've been swapping sprockets for different tracks. The best all around combo I've found is 14x36. Great acceleration and usable top speed. Not sure what true GPS top speed is, but the cluster has shown 76 full tuck in a draft (this is obviously off because of the sprockets).

    • @Grainsauce
      @Grainsauce 3 роки тому

      @@TonyGenerali Maybe I'll have to try that, I just switched to the 14t and now my max speed is about 55 or I wonder how the 36 rear would be. I have a speedo healer to correct my speedo accuracy :)

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  3 роки тому

      @@Grainsauce I'm not sure. I'm no expert, but that seems low! I've got a top speed video that I did before the intake and tune and I hit 70. Adding a 36 in the rear won't make that big of a difference... by adding a bigger rear, technically you get to your top speed faster, but should technically lose a mph or 2 because it's spinning up faster. I'd look at a cam and tune (if you don't have them). Get everything set and then go from there. Depending on your weight, I think you should be seeing at least 60-65 min IMO

    • @Grainsauce
      @Grainsauce 3 роки тому

      @@TonyGenerali Yeah I'm definitely doing a reflash, and was considering doing a cam, I weigh 170lbs if that matters, I hear every grom engine is a bit different too. Only other thing i've done is stock air box mod and the Zoom Brute exhaust.

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  3 роки тому

      I completely agree with that notion. I've seen Groms with a slew of mods run anywhere from 55-70. I fell like the flash tune made a difference in mine. It ran smoother and gave me a jump in rpm... so I think that's a good next step. At 170, you're still light enough that it shouldn't slow you down... I race against dudes that are 200 plus and they're moving at a pretty decent pace!

    Any change in fuel mileage per gallon?

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  2 роки тому +1

      I honestly have no clue. I only ride the Grom once a month on the track... for maybe 15 minutes at a time. I have never really monitored how the gas does because I usually only have enough in the tank to get me through the race weekend. Sorry I'm no help!!

      Are you saying that your bike is slower after the tune and intake? I'm seeing like 2mph more... I just get there faster and am able to sit in gear for just a tad longer, helping me on track.

    • @TonyGenerali
      @TonyGenerali  3 роки тому +2

      I'd like to do just a filter, but we're required to keep the stock airbox. Rules are rules when it comes to racing... So unfortunately that's not an option for me. Also, no mindf!$@%#^ when you don't pay for it. Perks of racing and sponsors.
