Muhammad Ali fights Joe Frazier for a second time, wanting to revenge his first professional defeat and seal the deal for a fight with George Foreman who had taken the title from Frazier the year before. Not being a title fight, this contest got less recognition than previously expected. It lived up to the hype, but wasn't nearly as intense as their first meeting. It was seen upon as a contest between two out of prime veterans who should both have retired a long time ago. After the fight they had a victory each, making the Thrilla in Manila possible the following year.

In my 70s, dying of cancer, words can't express what seeing this again means to me.
There was no greater champion than Ali, he faced no challenger greater than Smokin' Joe Frazier.
Whether you realize it or not, you're looking at the 2 greatest boxers that ever drew the breath of life.

This was when heavyweight boxing was great, I watched these fights as a teenager and it's great to be able to step back in time to enjoy this fight all over again.
There’s some excellent heavyweight boxers in present day as well. Fury vs Joshua will be a superfight for the ages. But yeah, this was one of HW boxing’s true Golden Ages

Unfortunately, the brain damage piled up with each fight turning him punch drunk by 1975 and a vegetable from 1980 - present day. Ali should have retired after 1972 so that he could be walking and talking today. I have all the respect in the world for Joe Frazier. When he fought Muhammad Ali he took the fight to him, never backed down and was never intimidated. Most fighters feared Muhammad Ali Joe Frazier didn't.

Ali was coming back from that long lay off. He was not yet ready for the first fight with Frazier & was too early. By mid 1973, he was getting back be the champion. So how he beat Foreman & then Frazier agin in 1975.
Saeed I see you put his defeat against Frazier as not yet back on his shape : yes it might be / but I think ALi thought subconsciously that he was still as strong than ever as when he was banned last fight against Zora Folley/ then he realised during that fight he was not anymore as the same not able lift up his strength and athletic aptitude / he will need therefore to use experience tactic intelligence more than before !! / hence Foreman fight to illustrate that / last time he really danced was this fight against Frazier .. after that it was on few occasion .., THE 70ies NO VIETNAM ALI WAS NOT THE SAME as the 60ties ALI !!!

Can't argue with that. He was never the same after returning and as I mentioned not ready for such a big fight at that time. For the first title win, it took him four years to get there and again on his return took him an other four years to get back to his best at that particular age. At the same time, he used his intelligent tactics to win the fights as you mentioned. No can be the same but for age one needs to adjust and adjusts his boxing style and tactics like for Foreman fight he did not dance but went straight at him and also acquired the rope tactics. If any fighter at any point would have done the rope tactics against Foreman he would've knocked him out but Ali was different. He did not keep the distance from Foreman and won all the rounds until knocked him out in the 8th round though he staggered him in the earlier rounds but did not go for the kill as he knew Foreman would no go earlier.

One of the best performances in Ali's career, all things considered. Brilliant gameplan too: circle to the left and jab, plant your feet and let your shots off when Frazier closes distance, tie him up when Frazier gets too close, repeat. Just beautiful boxing.

Ali showed in this fight that he had learned all the right lessons from their first fight. In this fight, unlike the first one, Ali clinched with Joe when they were on the ropes. And Ali stayed off the ropes alot more than in the first fight. In the first fight, Joe just teed off on Ali with the left hooks along the ropes. Ali saw to it that this would not happen in this the 2nd fight. More movement from Ali in this fight too. Ali was one of the smartest fighters to step in the Ring.
It was an incredibly tactical, strategic, and well-executed performance of boxing mastery by the great Ali. However, you must also consider that Frazier did not perform quite we well here overall as he had the first time around. He looked a bit slower, more tentative, and more human. I guess facing a prime George Foreman might do that to you.

hbk711x No, he held a lot. There isn't a human being that has ever been born that could go at the pace Ali did for the first four rounds. Holding was an obvious strategy, to cut down on body punches and sizzling left hooks on the inside.

This is the most underrated fight of the Trilogy, but it is the one that probably best showcases their respective talents. In the first fight, the ring rust from the layoff showed on Ali as he didn't have the stamina to stave off the ever-charging Frazier for 15 rounds. The third fight, which many call the best of the three, was in slow motion compared to their 1960s heyday. Ali at 225 and Frazier at 215 hardly resembled the fighters who destroyed Cleveland Williams and Buster Mathis. In this fight, Ali has the legs to withstand Frazier's punishment and enough of the old flash to baffle his opponent and steal rounds. Frazier is always Frazier, willing to take three to get in one of his own, but on this night the three by Ali must have stung like a yellow jacket.
The one knock I have on this fight was the incessant clinching by Ali, which effected the tempo of the fight. Strategy sure, but bad in some ways.

The clinching was unfair wrestling especially in the heat 3rd fight. Better refs couldve stopped it w point deductions. This was easily the least good of the 3 fights

The first fight was truly “Fight of the Century” (or one of them) and a war for the ages. Frazier in particular performed FAR better in the first fight than he did here. Sure, Ali performed better in this fight and since you’re clearly an adoring Ali fan that is why you put this fight on a pedestal, but try to be objective and also acknowledge that Frazier performed much more spectacularly in the first fight and that the fight itself was far greater the first time

In reading these comments, i find it amusing how so many - a lot of who I assume are young -- are posting comments in amazement at OJ being a commentator. I assume they're young and don't realize how popular he was back the in the 70s. The truth is that OJ was the Michael Jordan of the 70s young folks in that he was not only a superstar athlete but with his charisma he was one of the biggest celebrities of that time period. This was of course before the events of 1994.

If you want to watch Ali then watch Cleveland Williams fight. Ali looks so slow he's not the same fighter. His prime was taken away. Watch the young Cassius clay if you want to know how good he was. If you watched Mike Tyson towards the end of his career you wouldn't be impressed until you saw Tyson 20-23 yr old. Prime Ali would destroy Joe. But Ali had heart and can take a beating even when he was way over the hill unlike Mike Tyson who was a coward at heart and could not take a beating. Dundee didn't give two monkeys about Ali no empathy coz if he had empathy he would have retired him years before he did and suffered all the beatings that Ali took. The most controversial aspect of this fight occurred in the second round (9:08). Ali hurt Frazier with a punch which caused Joe to stagger back, and as Ali was going in for the kill the ref arbitrarily stepped in between the two fighters and sent Ali to his corner. It was obvious that he feared an early KO and because it was such a big event fight, he didn't want it to end so prematurely.
Perez allowed Ali to grab Joe and pull his head down 113 times in 12 rounds. He promised Eddie Futch he would take pts but he never did. Ali got the win smartly I guess but in a cheap way. Ali wasn't able to get Frazier down in 41 rounds. He wasn't gonna do it in the 2nd round either.

Following his 3 year imposed lay-off , Ali should have waited another year before taking on Frazier . Frazier was at the height of his powers in 1971 ( 1st fight ) and Ali was still very much ring rusty then ; he had lost much of his speed and sharpness because of that lay-off - and crucially , he under-estimated how difficult an opponent Frazier would be. Had they met prior to Ali's ban , there is no question in my mind that Ali would have outpointed Frazier .
He could not afford to wait, the Match was on March and Ali was going to go to jail on April. But then he got news that the court ruled he was innocent, but by then the fight was on.

ThefightingCelt He couldn't wait. His draft case was still making its way through the courts and had not yet made it to the Supreme Court. Their first fight was in March of 1971 and the Supreme Court didn't hear his case until the summer of 1971. Had the Supreme Court ruled against Ali, it would have been the end of the legal road for him and he most likely would have had to start serving the five year prison sentence that he had been appealing. I agree with you that it would have been better for Ali to,wait another year, but at the time the possibility of that being his only chance to regain his crown was very real.

Every fighter has an excuse after they lose a fight. Its just that Ali's believed as Gospel because he had so much charisma and star power. Angelo Dundee his trainer was always useful in spinning things for Ali to the media. Ali wasn't rusty he was sharp and fast in 71. He came out and peppered Joe for the first 3 rounds.
Where you are correct is that he underestimated Joe Frazier. He didn't believe Frazier could move that fast and keep on him after taking that punishment.
Joe gave Ali time for 2 tune up fight against Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonevena. 15 rds. There was no ring rust on March 8th

This fight was not as dramatic or as important as the other 2,also there was no title on the line here,but technically it was a very good performance especially from Ali....
I recently watched the first Ali/Frazier fight, and i'm shocked at how bad Frazier performed in this fight comparatively . Ali wasn't the same as he was in their first fight either, but he was about as you might expect. I'd say Ali was 85 to 90% of what he was in their first fight, but Frazier was only a shell of his former self.
I hadn't noticed in the past, how much Frazier had regressed between these fights. He took a terrible pounding despite winning their first fight, and he got hammered by Foreman in between. He had a tough fight with Joe Bugner also, and I'm not sure what other fights he had since the first fight with Ali.
Foreman beat the hell out of Frazier, but it only lasted a couple of rounds. Foreman probably only landed 20 punches roughly, but they were bombs. I believe however, that Frazier took more punishment from Ali than he took from Foreman. In their first fight, Ali battered Frazier repeatedly for 15 rounds. Ali was faster and hit harder because of better hand speed, and by the end of the fight he had Frazier's head swollen like a lumpy beach ball.
In this fight, .......Frazier looked heavy and slow, and his punches were much weaker than in the first fight. Ali stood in the pocket throwing punches for a longer period because he realized Frazier wasn't as dangerous as he was in 1971. I really believe Joe was damaged goods and never the same after Ali/Frazier #1 in 1971.
Both guys were sharp in 1971, and I might be in the minority, but I thought Ali won the first fight despite getting knocked down. Ali was landing combinations all night, Frazier landed good body punches and Joe would catch him with a big left hook fairly often. Frazier's punches were wicked and the crowd responded loudly every time Frazier landed a big hook,....... but Ali was landing solid punches also and landing twice as many as Frazier.
I think Ali won all 3 fights with Frazier, and I'm neutral as far as which guy I like better. I like both guys, but I believe that Frazier didn't land the volume of punches that Ali landed, and Ali was fairly consistent each round while Frazier took 4 or 5 rounds to really get 'smoking'.
These are 2 of the very best, legendary heavyweights. May they rest in peace with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Ali twisted the fight by clinching Joe's neck systematically. It's a shame he hasn't been heavily sanctioned.
It could have been a draw, easily;
Xavier Richard I noticed that referee Richie Pearl wouldn't let Ali to hold Frazier behind the head in their first fight. He was right there to pull his glove off of Frazier's neck, or he barked at Ali to let go.
In this fight, it was a totally different story. The referee allowed the same, and is it only a coincidence that Ali won the fight in which he was allowed to hold but lost the fight whereby he was prevented from holding? It makes more difference than people realize.
I'm going to check to see if Ali's people requested a change of referee, and, requested this referee specifically. Before I research it, I would wager that they requested this referee;..........they likely knew that he would allow the holding.

After watching this fight again, cannot believe that Ali won the decision. All Ali did was hold and backpedal and fire some pitty-pat flurries. Frazier was the aggressor and connected with the harder punches. Cosell was such an overt Ali fan, it's almost embarrassing that he called himself a journalist. Ali never would listen to Dundee which is apparent in this fight. In the 70's, Ali lost at least 2 more fights that he got the decision based on his popularity. (Young, Norton III). It reminded me of the Hagler-Leonard fight where Leonard got the decision based on flashiness and his overall public love.

If you watch the fight closely Joe dodged tons of Ali s punches and countered every time. That fight was extremely close and I think Frazier deserved it in effective agredsiveness not many hard punches landed on Frazier just s few. Mostly pitty pat punches.

There will never, ever be fights like this..Both fighters had the style to both hurt and neutralize each other. Stylistically, it was the perfect match-up to bring out the best in each other and make great fights which it did. Ali needed Joe to take him into deep water, to test him to his limit--to bring out his further greatness. Joe also, who fought great himself, in loss--especially the 3rd. This fight was much closer than perceived. Ali really did hurt Frazier with that right in the 2nd. It buckled his knees and any time you can get Frazier to retreat, you have done something. I think Joe had already recovered before Perez halted the round. But in the early stages of the fight, Ali was missing with a lot of punches. Eventually, Ali had some huge moments and flurries. RIP Smokin' Joe Frazier and RIP in Muhammad Ali. The memories you left us are timeless.
I say this was Joe Frazier's masterpiece performance; over a month hospitalized afterward because he refused to give up, and he won against the best boxer to ever live.

Got damn, that short left hook he landed @ 5:54 right on Frazier;s chin would've wobbled, or knocked down most men. Frazier had a chin on him for sure.
A lot of fighters would complain to the referee about the holding, but not Frazier he kept fighting on. Great fight, RIP to both legends of the ring.
This is how the first fight should have gone. I would have loved to see a real prime Ali without any lay off. I reckon he would have finished undefeated hands down. It was a shame how his boxing career ended. But for it to end like that and still be considered the greatest boxer of all time just goes to show what kind of a fighter he was. Beat the best out there and avenged losses. That's a real champion
But the first fight would have gone like the second had Alì decided to take more time for training n instead of just 3 months. Fact is that he was afraid his licence might be revoked again. I had seen this match in the '80's and didn't remember how Alì could sustain his footwork for almost the entire fight: something he was unable to do in the first fight. And footwork against Frazier was something he couldn't do without.

Ali... What a work of art from the good Lord. Fastest, smartest Man in boxing. Bursitis in his right fist for 90 % of his career. If you have bursitis, as I do in my right arm joints, you KNOW what pain is. It's a nagging electric pain that never seems to go away. Best H.weight of all time and a great Human being.

Andre Ward and Timothy Bradley are excellent commentators, especially since they’re former great boxers themselves. Max Kellerman is also an amazingly knowledgeable and intelligent commentator as a true boxing connoisseur and historian. So long story short, you’re a casual if you’re dissing commentators like these. There are some terrible commentators these days as well, but that’s always been the case. Can’t fucking stand Bernardo Osuna for example... ugh. Some of the British commentators they’ve got these days are utterly atrocious as well
I actually love this fight out of all 3. It was the least popular but when you see their first bout, and then watch this, you can tell Ali changed his entire style and footwork to go against Fraziers style, since supposedly he didn't train very much before the first fight they had. Definitely an interesting piece of boxing history.

at around 9:23 ( which he saw ) then he steps in a second afterwards. What seems peculiar in addition is that Perez looks at the camera as he does this. Now why would someone exhibit conscious recognition at that moment in that way?
You can tell Ali upped his conditioning this time around. That first fight he underestimated Joe and paid the price. This time, he was slim and trim, light on his feet, and bouncin around. Champions bounce back.

Damn shame these two great men and great champions could not have met in both of their primes. In this fight Ali provided a glimpse of the amazing abilities he demonstrated in the first half of his career, before being unfairly stripped of his title and right to earn a living. Now both these great champions, two of the very best fighters of all time have moved on to higher ground and greener pastures. RIP to Ali and Smokin Joe.
They did, both were at their best in 1971. Ali fans claim he was much better in his early years but that's a myth. He had easier fights and was a bit faster probably but the Ali in 1971 was stronger. Frazier would have KO'D the young Ali. Ali wasn't in good shape very often the 2nd half of his career which cost him a lot. The performance in 1971, despite that he lost, was the best of his career IMO. Keep in mind both fights with Liston were fixed. Had he fought Liston at 22 in a real fight his career would have been different. Liston would have crushed Ali, just like he crushed all others. Liston was the best HW ever IMO.

As Howard Cosell is interviewing Joe Frazier and Angelo Dundee I see my uncle Lorre Jackson(R.I.P.) looking over Howard's shoulder during the interview. Brought a smile to my face because my Dad(R.I.P.) and one of his best friends Mr. Charles(R.I.P.)was also in attendance for the fight.
