This was a deserved win by Ali, but the Ref did not uphold the rules... would not happen today . Ali took many liberties like this... pulling the head down should not have been allowed. after a couple of warnings take a point... that takes away one of his tactics, as well it should
Oscar was one tough dude though. But Ali was the master of the head game. This fight was a turning point for Ali. Ali really developed a great strategy that he followed his whole career.
At this point, in the comment section going from most recent to now...not a lot is taken in consideration of Clay's future debilitating disease and how perhaps, unnoticeably it may have had it's own affect, even here. I found the match very rough to be patient to watch it all, but hey...it's Clay. Still, you DO have to give it to someone who displays SO much heart, like Bonavena did. If only that amazing endurance lasted another 1 minute or so. Then he wouldn't have been knocked out. BUT...take into mind that it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Bonavena's "GO GET HIM", attitude. He simply could have clenched and just lost in a decision. Stamina is a bitch.
The referee does not send Ali to the neutral corner after the first knockdown. Ali remains standing next to Bonavena, which was illegal. He does it 2 times, so that he could not recover.
This is where Ali began to learn two things. First, he was not the same fighter as four years earlier (nor would he ever be again-that younger, in-form Ali would have, as Angelo Dundee said, destroyed everyone in his path for years to come). Secondly, he learned that he could take a punch, which was not a good thing to learn and was probably a significant factor in his eventual neurological decline at a far-too-early age. He could take the hardest punches that Frazier, Foreman, and Shavers could dish out, and still beat them. The fact that he fought and beat every top boxer of his era, avoiding none, for many years shows just how good he was, even though never the fighter he could have been without the three and a half-year hiatus. If he wasn't the best there ever was, only Joe Louis could claim that status (and Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Cus D'Amato all agreed that Joe Louis was the best ever INSIDE the ring, and even Ali, who was actually very fond of Joe Louis, did say, "I used to tease Joe Louis by reminding him that I was the greatest of all time. But Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight fighter ever.") Maybe it's always going to be dubious to say of anyone "the greatest ever," as each champion was the best of his own time, and it's impossible to actually compare them with certainty, but Joe Louis and Ali were very special, each in his own way, and it seems that at their best, it's hard to imagine anyone beating them. Outside the ring, though, it was Muhammad Ali, the 'people's champion', who was truly "the greatest."

It was painfully evident that the 3 1/2 years off was too much for Ali to overcome and that he wasn’t going to beat a prime Joe Frazier in 1971. His speed ,stamina and movement weren’t the same as they were in the 1960s. The 1970s showed his heart, determination and ability to absorb punishment that he didn’t need to really display previously.
It's easy to forget that Ali only had this fight and a 3 round bout with Jerry Quarry after a three and a half year layoff as preparation for the first fight with Frazier. Ali wasn't ready to take on a prime Frazier as soon as that.
If he had one more tough fight that went 12-15 rounds--I think that would have given him the necessary prep to beat Frazier. (However, Ali still fought a TREMENDOUS fight against Frazier--he landed some VICIOUS shots against Joe--any other fighter would have been TKO'd at the least but Frazier was willing to die in the ring if he had to--nobody was going to beat him that night!!)
Ali had no choice about the timing of his bout with Frazier. His draft case was still pending in the courts and the possibility that he might actually have to go to prison was very real. Had the Supreme Court not ruled in his favor later that year we might not have ever seen Ali vs Frazier.
One thing i've noticed with a lot of Ali fights, especially once he came back from suspension, was his propensity for using his glove to pull his opponents head down - sometimes even maneuvering his opponent off balance, which wears them out quicker. Referees never seemed to do much about it apart from a warning here and there.
I'm seeing so many comments stating that, apparently based on his commentary during this fight, it looks to them as if Cosell definitely didn't like Ali. These guys are either too young, or don't know much about boxing, or both. They don't know Cosell's history with Ali. They were actually friends. When mainstream America didn't appreciate Ali's refusal to serve in the military, Cosell was one of the few media figures of note to publicly support Ali. It was a brave thing for Cosell to do. He certainly stuck his neck out for him.
I don't know how one would be surprised that Ali was somewhat rusty after a nearly four year layoff. But ive noticed that with a few more fights under his belt his ring movement, timing, coordination, etc. all improved considerably. In any case he's the only man to ever KO Bonavena, which is pretty extraordinary for someone away from the ring that long.
Never ask a vegan P.E.T.A. member for the best recipe to cook veal. Always take into account the opinion of people who had a big problem with Ali's protest against the Vietnam war that cost him the best 4 years of his prime, which they had no protest against. Some never got over it. I don't care what anyone changes their names to, except Bruce Jenner. But the fact that Frazier's camp and many more couldn't get past it is a big tell. The flag wrapped so tightly around their heads and neck meant their brains weren't getting enough oxygen and they couldn't see the forest for the tree's. Howard is embarrassing to listen to. Ali beating him every round in the punch count and Howard almost wetting himself the few time Bonavena hit him with anything of consequence.
I realize a lot of folks, especially Boxing Fans - from the late 1960s - late 1970s, can't stand Howard Cosell.....but I must beg to differ. I for one loved the back & forth between Cosell and Ali. They were made for each other. I don't know why but I loved his color commentary on both Boxing AND Monday Night Football with Dandy Don Meredith......Another time for sure !!!!!
It looks to me like Ali would get tired dancing before Bonavena got tired throwing bombs. Plus Bonavena can take a lot of punishment and still keep moving forward. Bonavena was clumsy and Ali wasn’t having much trouble slugging it out so maybe he figured he’d do that until he saw an opportunity to drop him.
My parents used to bad talk Ali when I was a kid. Especially when he changed his name and refused the draft. A lot of people hated Ali back then. How things change.
Ali thought why should he go 6,000 miles across the world to kill innocent people or color who had never called him nigga. It was in Louisville KY that he was called nigga and refused service at a restaurant when he came home from Rome in 1960 at the Olympics, they refused Clay when he volunteered and registered saying he was slow
@@dezertfox3681 Look As I've studied boxing, I do know that Ali was extremely lucky that foreman fought stupidly that night in Zaire. That's a fact. We saw an older George Foreman learn to fight smarter and ultimately win back the heavyweight title at age 45.
Yea! but that is what made him so memorable. I was a very young guy and Cosell could piss me off, but he was part of our sports background. I disliked Cosell but I now miss him. Part of my disappearing youth or simply acknowledgement of his talent?
Yes, but Cosell was at his best in boxing, especially at 57:49 when he dropped Bonavena. Or, when Foreman knocked down Frazier to take the title from Smokin' Joe. No one was more exciting than Cosell when it came to boxing.
@@SCfanIam100 Couldn't stand him at all...obnoxious and silly, saying the obvious as if it was a brilliant insight ...did his best to spoil many a memorable sporting event

I have great admiration for Bonavena as a brave, powerful and dangerous fighter, (he floored Joe Frazier twice in their first fight. Frazier could only outpoint him in both their fights). But when I watch his fights, (which I enjoy), I think his greatest shortcoming was his footwork and balance. His legs often seemed stiff and uncoordinated, and at times he seemed on the verge of falling over his own feet. Mind you, Ali could wrong foot anyone.
He reached with that last left hook and caught a hard left hook in return, the one that caused the first of the three knockdowns that ended the fight. So, yes, he had flaws, and Ali could always detect the other guy's flaws.
watching a batch of old Ali fights. I learned this. The Referee exists to yank and pull Ali's arm off of every opponents neck and head. Ali was the Clinch /Holder in Chief... among other things.
Anyone that knows boxing knows Ali is tagging this guys head continously!!! Ali is landing hooks and uppercuts and Howard Cosell is saying nothing about it.

Always take into account the opinion of people who had a big problem with Ali's protest against the Vietnam war that cost him the best 4 years of his prime, which they had no protest against.

The greatest boxer of all time.

Then they support a bigmouth blowhard draft dodger trump...
Ali thought why should he go 6,000 miles across the world to kill innocent people or color who had never called him nigga. As I've studied boxing, I do know that Ali was extremely lucky that foreman fought stupidly that night in Zaire.
That's a fact.
We saw an older George Foreman learn to fight smarter and ultimately win back the heavyweight title at age 45.

One of the worst fights Ali has been in, and he STILL makes it a classic with that end.
Howard Cosell could give a Tylenol tablet an Excedrin headache.
Yea! but that is what made him so memorable.

It was a boring fight up until 1 min. & 13 secs. left (57:45) in the final round! LOL
