Whiskey in the Jar is an old Irish folk/drinking song.
And was done by Thin Lizzy first which is the version Metallica is covering.
Lord Raging Iguana yeah it’s a cover of a cover. All of them are equally awesome
Thin lizzy wasn't the first one to do this song
@@ericburch2531 Literally nobody said they were. But Thin Lizzy's version of the song is what Metallica was covering with this song.
The Dubliners' version is the best.
It's a traditional Irish song. It was done fantastically by Thin Lizzy.
Thin Lizzy reaction?
The Dubliners did a good one as well.
I've seen no less than 300 different individuals or bands play it. And I'm not even in Ireland.
and i find it hard to watch anybody else play it tbh phil lynott got me through a lot off hard days with his music still hurts to just say his name. rip
Actually i guess nobody knows who wrote this song
"this song is just so original" .... is someone gonna tell him?
Jeremy LeBlanc Hahahaha!!
Nope.
You gonna?
You got a thin lizzies chance in hell of me telling him
No shit I heard that and rushed to the comments and and I'll be damn the very first one my friend 👏👏👏
We should but I don't want to be the one to tell him
It's a traditional Irish song, but Metallica is specifically covering the Thin Lizzy version of it.
Gotta react to the Thin Lizzy version...
lol I said the same thing then saw this!! 🤘🤘
Erik Stone No...it’s a dumbledors song from Ireland.
Ok next listen to their other epic cover, TURN THE PAGE..originally by the legend Bob Seger.
Astronomy is my other favorite cover of theirs, tied with Turn the Page.
Tuesdays gone is probably the best 1 off Garage inc
Yeah. Another great one. I love there covers. Definitely a more thoughtful song about the harder part of road life. Something i can definitely relate to as a truck driver.
“The Small Hours” is my favorite cover of theirs.
Yes! I love that song.
"Whiskey in a Jar," is over 200 years old. It's a traditional Irish folk song,
"This song is so original" boi I don't know how to tell you this 😂
Yeah but the "original" itsn't really original either
@@stdag5041 you're goddamn right XD
Thin Lizzy remade this years ago. It's a very old folk song, I think.
ua-cam.com/video/hlWTASnnft4/v-deo.html
Fantastic!!! So Funny. This is an amazing cover. So solid🔥🔥
I know it's extremely unpopular among metal fans - but I love the 90s hard rock metallica so much.
Me too, never understood the hate that they got for load n reload. Load is among my favorite albums of all time, deep lyrics, great vocals, creative and strong songwriting.
Same here
krijn vroege because people are lazy, they want to be told what to think, not interpret things for themselves... which is what their music is all about.
@@terryberkshire5504 , true, I 'disliked' these albums at first too, because I always saw comments saying how bad they where. Til I actually listend to them and realised how good they are. Half of the load/reload haters havent even given it a fair chance
@@krijnvroege1499 first time I heard em I really liked them as well, but I never really often came back to many of the songs to listen again.
Its mainly because quite a few of the Load/reload songs are slow and/or long, or just not that interesting unless you spend time analysing them.
Metallica - No leaf clover! It's a must!
Yeah it is
NO LEAF CLOVER GET THIS TO THE TOP!!!!
Yas
Please get this top comment!
Why did metallica never make a studio version of that song. And minus human.??? I've wished for.it for so long.
Alex: This is really cool! I love this!
*woman pukes*
Alex: AGH!!!
*immediately goes back to headbanging*
The most rock and roll 5 seconds in the history of your channel. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is low-key one of my favourite Metallica tracks. I love how they put their stamp on a classic.
Also need to point out how stacked the woman in the middle looks in the thumbnail 😳
React to the Twisted Sister please! "I wanna rock" or "We're not gonna take it" are just legendary!
Metallica-Bleeding Me off of their load album. It’s a must. That or the last song on the album, The Outlaw Torn. Extremely underrated.
Dude....we just became best friends. I think that's their 2 most underrated songs as well... absolutely brilliant. I'd place Fixxxer in a close 3rd place
All 3 should be played for s&m2 in october !!
Hell fucking yeah dude
Anthony Price Totally agreed!
@@jasonx4008 Devil's Dance, King Nothing, No Leaf Clover, Carpe Diem, and Bad Seed are some of my favorites from that period.
So original? Yeah it was, when it was written in the 18th century.
I think he meant there sound not the song itself
This is the most overplayed Metallica song by far. Haven’t listened it for years and years. Gave it a try again...really haven’t missed it, could go without it for 10 more years 🙂
Still it's heavier than Thin Lizzy's version but in the end is basically the same , so yeah not so original but it isn't a bad song
@ᴡᴏʟғ ᴀᴀʀᴏɴ Uhm, what?
Nah, Enter Sandman is the most overplayed song.
I was today years old when I learned that this wasn't a Metallica original. Halfway through this video, I went and checked out the Thin Lizzy version. This is a great version, and appreciate it, after all these year. So awesome! Loved it all!
Glad to see so many people know the origins of this song. Even though it's a cover it's still one of my favorite Metallica songs. 🤘🤘
The first song i ever heard of Metallica. By far still my favorite cover ever still to this day.
Being a massive Metallica fan that I am. They are by far my favourite band. I love the way you review all their music and how you react to them. You show their music the love and respect it deserves and you appreciate them as artists, no matter the era of their music you listen to. Thank you
Kirk HAMMET lead guitar is Filipino -AMERICAN blood ...I'm proud from philippines.and watching here in Tokyo Japan more power to ur channel
Hey Alex, so 4 years later (and not sure you read comments on videos this old), but you owe it to yourself to check out VoicePlay's acapella version of this Metallica classic. The video doesn't have any wild house parties or anything, but the complexities of the arrangement, the tight harmonies, subterranean bass, and vocal clarity cutting deep into your soul, make it totally worth it!
I would try out Seether "Remedy," Volbeat "Devil's Bleeding Crown," and Halestorm "I Miss the Misery"
Addison Small
Volbeat - Still Counting ... 🤘
he’s gotta do some more volbeat
Hell yeah hell yeah and hell yeah
React to turn the page by metallica, it's an awesome cover
Agreed one of my favourites despite being a cover.
Dude... what a fucking cover. Though i still feel that Astronomy is the best cover Metallica has ever done.
The first song in the first few seconds is called breadfan from metallica. It is their cover of budgie's original song. Both versions are great I highly recommend.
Btw shoutout to the hero of a cleaning lady who had to deal with this chaos.
I’ll never forgot hearing this song for the first time. It was at a training orientation for the Royal Marines, and the training team had put together clips of field training, PT all that fun stuff, alongside this song and I can say the song made the training seem even more badass especially with James and Lara producing some amazing solos on the gituar and drums. Love this song
Metallica-' Fuel ' is lit as f@$k you would love that song/video 😎
he needs to react to it both the album recording and the s&m performance
Agreed
Don't forget "Motorbreath"
don't forget 'The memory Remains'
All great suggestions, also Unforgiven 2 😎😎😎
Yo Alex please react to the whole Metallica - ...And Justice For All album
I hope he does cause that album got me moist
...And Justice for Jason would be preferable.
@@olsfaust17 as long as it is connected to metallica i will stay moist
Imagine if he reacted to St. Anger
@@emmazinke355 i would kill myself
This was my mom’s favorite song. I miss her so much, man. Thank you for reacting to this. Lots of memories.
Seen them performing this live in Ireland this year, EVERYBODY in the crowd was singing along. GOOSBUMPS all over! Slane Castle 2019 was amazing!
Gasoline by I Prevail goes super duper mega hard. Harder than Bow Down....listen to it bro, trust me
Day 5 of asking Alex to react to Godsmack and Shinedown!
I picked which songs too
Voodoo and Sound of Madness
Oh definitely second Shinedown.. Hell Godsmack too!! 🤘🤘
Gross
@@chemicalbrotha78 on what POSSIBLE grounds is asking for him to react to those two songs "gross"?! Calling Voodoo and Sound of Madness is fightin words!
A fightin' it shall be...I suppose...for those bands are horrible mall rock milquetoast...for shame.
Yes Sound of Madness!
Oh, good! You did catch this one! One of the most fun tunes they ever did!
I would personally love to see Alex react to the whole S&M album but if I had to pick one it'd have to be no leaf clover or even the memory remains, now that Metallica have just done S&M2 recently it might be a good time to react to it, man there's not much out there quite like the power of the symphony behind Metallica music, it's what got me to Branch out into bands like nightwish actually. Love your work Alex my dude!
Alex, this is an Irish folk song bud. It's about a pirate who got played by Molly. It's from Metallica's Garage Inc. album, which is a double disc album of cover songs.
That aside, I say "Metallica is the MC.D's of metal" should be your next t-shirt. That's a 100% genuine line, man.. 😅😅😅
In the older versions (Dubliners) it was actually Jenny I believe.
👌👍👍👍
Metallica = McDonald's love your analogy bro 😂
Bada bump ba da!
Thinking like that, Megadeth is Burger King
@@jcnew2734 Judas Priest is Arby's and Iron Maiden is Wendy's
Whiskey in the Jar" is the tale of a highwayman or footpad who, after robbing a military or government official, is betrayed by a woman; whether she is his wife or sweetheart is not made clear. Various versions of the song take place in Kerry, Kilmoganny, Cork, Sligo Town, and other locales throughout Ireland. It is also sometimes placed in the American South, in various places among the Ozarks or Appalachians, possibly due to Irish settlement in these places. Names in the song change, and the official can be a Captain or a Colonel, called Farrell or Pepper among other names. The protagonist's wife or lover is sometimes called Molly, Jenny, Emzy, or Ginny among various other names. The details of the betrayal are also different, being either betraying him to the person he robbed and replacing his ammunition with sand or water, or not, resulting in his killing the person.
Cant wait to see them again in October in Sydney! really hope this song is on the set list!
PLEASE react to Bleeding Me from Metallica. From the Load album
One of mi favorites of metallica
Favorite song off Load
S&M live version is way better than studio version. Just saying.
@@NekroMcFly actually prefer the studio version, but love both
@@NekroMcFly i like the studio version more based on my time and experience with the studio version. But anything s&m is worth a reaction as well
React to "sad but true" by metallica it's a really awesome song dude.
It’s good for a non thrash song.
@@Metalhead_Coaster_Fan what i love about metallica is that no matter what genre of metal they go for they still make me moist
(Except st.anger that was kinda you know)
@@Metalhead_Coaster_Fan I'm not hatin' on you man but good music is good music. It doesn't have to be a certain genre.
You know - MEtallica also did a cover of Bob Segers LEGENDARY classic "Turn the Page". Would LOVE to see you react to that, cuz that gives me goosebumps every single time.
My wife and I closed out our wedding reception with this song!!! My wife’s grandmother was in her wheelchair spinning around on the dance floor. I was drinking Angel’s Envy Bourbon, eating lobster Macaroni & Cheese and wolfing down our Nutella-Banana Custom wedding cake. Danced to U2’s “All I Want Is You” and ended on James belting out that last “There’s....whiskey in the jar-oh!!!!!!” 😎
Alex, If you want to experience Metallica in their rawest and purist awesomeness, watch Whiplash live from Seattle 1989
It will blow your mind 🤯👍🏻
If I'll be honest, whiplash is like battery before battery.
Saw that tour in 89, whiplash was fantastic
Amen to that bro
I love me some Metallica. They have a couple long covers, “Mercyful Fate” and “Ronny James Dio Medley”
Its actually an old Irish folk song. Few hundred years old. Several people have recorded it but theirs did the best, by far.
And the video is a blast.
The song is a cover. It's an old irish folk song, which was brought into the world of Rock n Roll by Thin Lizzy, an irish Hard Rock Band from the 70s and 80s. Their singer tragically passed away in 1986. It would be really cool if you would also do a reaction to a Thin Lizzy song. "The boys are back in town" and "Got to give it up" are some really good and famous songs by them
Jason Richardson: Hos Down. It's instrumental and will blow your mind!
I recommend the Meinl cymbals video. It's live in studio
Spot on. That was a tasty big mac.
I love old Metallica but this song hits the spot for me.
Great reaction!
I love that you get lost in the music and keep it going without pausing every ten frigging seconds.
As they say in Letterkenny: Wish you weren't so frickin awkward, bud.
Lol, love you Alex
Great reaction may I suggest you react to "The day that never comes" by Metallica next. Amazing song!!!
Nice Alex, keep the videos coming and keep Metallica going! You're the best!!!
This song instantly takes me back to flying 120mph down backroads on my bike with this song blarin in the earbuds..
The entire Garage inc. album is cover songs. A throwback to their garage band days. Also a nod to all the bands that inspired then to become what they are.
This song has been covered tons of times. But Nevertheless, this is my favorite version.
Go for your two recent favorites together, Break In live with Lzzy Hale AND Amy Lee
The party song ! Gets everyone up dancing 🎼🎶
2 secs, from wondering to headbangin. thats metallica!!
Alex, you should watch the Metallica movie, "through the never". You will love it.
For something different. Try “the outlaw torn” by Metallica. But do the version off of S&M. Where they perform with the San Francisco sympathy. Dude it’s incredible
I may be an introvert, but even I've been to parties like this, on occasion with a band playing.
So original. Said about a song that is not only covered but also a folk song.
React to Metallica: Disposable Heroes (Madrid, Spain - May 3, 2019)
You need to listen to the original from The Dubliners
Technically that isn't the original. The song has been traced back to about the 17th century.
Agreed. Yeah do a reaction to that one. Fans of the page won’t be the same. Lol
This song is off of their Garage Inc album, an entire album of cover songs of bands they got some inspiration from through the years.
Hi Alex!!
I love you're reaction videos!!!
Greetings from Ciudad Juarez México!!!!
I am glad I grew up listening to Ozzy, Metallica, Motley Crue and many great others.
This song is off of garage Inc. Metallica did a bunch of cover songs. I like Tuesday's gone.
Die die my darling is one of my favourites from that. I didnt know it was a cover when i first heard it so it's just a metallica song to me
This is a cover song they did on the album garage inc. originally it was written by thin lizzy.
Remember though, this and all the songs from the garage inc album are cover songs to introduce Jasón Newstead: the bassist
I totally understood your analogy bro. Metallica is just like our best friend. Always making us feel good and having fun. They always feel like home. Only they can make me feel this way about music.
Awesome analogy yourself 👊
Check out Metallica whisky in the jar live at slane castle Ireland 2019

That music video brings back a lot of memories for me I remember coming home from grade school and we owned Metallica’s the videos 1989-2004 and I remember that one so vividly and turn the page and the for one and basically my Friday night were just spent watching Metallica videos.
Just to add it yet again, the song "Whiskey In The Jar" is a traditional Irish song that is several hundred years old
from the wikipedia page on the history of the song:
The song's exact origins are unknown. A number of its lines and the general plot resemble those of a contemporary broadside ballad "Patrick Fleming" (also called "Patrick Flemmen he was a Valiant Soldier") about Irish highwayman Patrick Fleming, who was executed in 1650.[2][3]
In the book The Folk Songs of North America, folk music historian Alan Lomax suggests that the song originated in the 17th century, and (based on plot similarities) that John Gay's 1728 The Beggar's Opera was inspired by Gay hearing an Irish ballad-monger singing "Whiskey in the Jar". In regard to the history of the song, Lomax states, "The folk of seventeenth century Britain liked and admired their local highwaymen; and in Ireland (or Scotland) where the gentlemen of the roads robbed English landlords, they were regarded as national patriots. Such feelings inspired this rollicking ballad."

Remember when- Bad Wolves you'll love it!
Hell yeah. This is just a fun ass song. Great cover by a great band.
It Was Actually From Thin Lizzy From An Bassist Singer "Phil Lynott" That Sings In An Irish Accent (Facts)
This is a cover of a Thin Lizzy song and is an old Irish drinking/folk song originally Metallica didnt write this I'm so glad to see you react to this :)

If you want 'better than the original' covers by Metallica then listen to Stone Cold Crazy (originally by Queen).
Astronomy
Back in 98 I was in a metal band and we had some fraternity friends who were getting kicked out of the house. So they threw a party and asked us to play. this kinda looked like what went down! About 300 people showed up and it definitely was a blast! Lol!
Great analogy Alex
You might not know, this is from Metallica's cover album Garage Inc. This album contains some other awesome pieces, like Turn The Page, Die My Darling, Mecryful Fate or Astronomy
