Wow. I never really thought about it, but this perfectly encapsulates the trilogy. I think it’s James coming to terms with his parents, the outside world and himself.
It’s reminiscent of Tool and Maynard’s journey as he dealt with the grief, anger and acceptance of his mom’s condition from Jimmy on Aenima to Judith on Mer de Noms to Wings for Marie on 10,000 days.

To me i see the trilogy as this, these are basically autobiographies of James life:
Part 1: James childhood being raised christian scientist, and the isolation he felt from that, and the rules of the religion forced him to watch his mother whither away, but not before his father leaving them. He quickly learned the rules of this fucked up world, fucked up people, fucked up religion and dubbed them all unforgiven, and learns to shut out the world, close off his feelings from everyone so he doesnt get hurt more
Part 2: later in life, succes has come to him, his pocket book has grown, their band has grown, his ego has grown, their on tour all the time, reaping the benefits of being rockstars, partying, booze, women, strip clubs. Yet in the back of his mind he wonders if his woman back home will still be there for him when he comes back. Is she “unforgivable” like the rest of the world? Deep down he knows he’s fucking up but to mask it he points the finger in the other direction, are you unforgiven too? Are you so perfect? Are you going to leave me like everyone else? Still he has trouble opening up, feeling his feelings and showing them even to those closest to him. But he wants too
Part3: now in his middle age life, new sobriety has allowed him to see clearly and reflect on his life. He set out with good intentions but success and fame drew him off course, so instead of chasing his dream he was chasing money, fame, feeding his false ego. Like a “moth into the flame” with the realization of all this its hard to forgive yourself let alone blame someone else for their mistakes when you’ve made worse ones. Finally hes able to more freely express his emotions to those closest to him, though its not easy.

Definitely an underrated masterpiece... Such a crisp and clean melody.
James' vocal performance on this album was one of his greatest indeed.

Branislav Celic because the mixing on the album was poor. If it had good mixing it would be the bands fourth best album. Behind numero dos tres cuatro. You have to admit people like older albums because of nostalgia

This is easily Metallica's most underrated song. Kirk's solo is so fucking amazing, the lyrics are great, the whole song is fantastic. One of my top 3 favorite Metallica songs, hands down
mine will always be the original unforgiven, but this one really reinvigorated them after the disaster that is st anger.

Absolutely agree, the lyrics are stronger here than on the first two. That probably comes down to a much deeper and richer reflection from age and experience. Never understood how people say James lyrics was better on the old albums, that was a young mans mentality, this is far deeper than anything you will get on those first couple of albums.
Believe it or not, this is my first time listening to "The Unforgiven III." It is actually now my favorite of the 3.
One of the most deep and personal lyrics by James... so underrated. James is talkgin about his demons and fears. This song brings shivers to me...

From all I've heard it's written because of a pair of fans with a sad story. Their young daughter was a fan until a drunk driver turned her from an is to a was. Instead of getting bitter and wanting revenge, the parents "reconnected with their daughter" by getting into her type of music.

This song just reminds me of my parents' divorce. In the perspective of my dad, who had an affair on my mom and how he almost committed suicide due to the family break up and how he could not forgive himself. This song is powerful.
Let's wait to the moment he discovers that Metallica made a full album and concert with a Symphonic orchestra. Alex, you must take a hear to it. Every song worths it, but I'd with Master of Puppets with orchestra ;).

Death Magnetic is my fav Metallica album, screw what everyone says about the sound man honestly. Day that never comes is one of if not their best ballad. All nightmare long is like trash/badassness overload. Judas kiss' main riff is one of their best. Unforgiven III is arguably kirk's best solo. That was just your life has the best opening to any song ever. Suicide and redemption is right after orion and to live is to die their best instrumental (but they're pretty daln close) my apocalpyse while my least fav of the album is still good and won them a grammy. Cyanide has an amazing bass line, the end of the line has badass drums and so does broken beat scared. The album is just their masterpiece 🤘

@@d00mnoodle The reason people hate the sound is because it was a product of the "Loudness War". Everything is literally turned up passed 11 and there's no dynamics whatsoever. I agree that it's a great album, but that "wall" of noise is what some/most people can't stand.
Agreed. All Nightmare Long, and try to pay attention to the video. I know it can be a lot to drink in on the first go, but the song and video really complete each other.

Death Magnetic seems to have been forgotten about somehow. They only recently played Cyanide again live, but the rest of the album seems to have been forgotten about. I love the album. Such a great album and this is my favourite of the Unforgivens.

Umut Arda the thing is, the video is completely detached from what the song’s about. It’s about the H.P Lovecraft story of The Hounds of Tindalos which are wolves that hunt through their nightmares. The only way to get away from them is to “stay with angels.” You can’t even escape through sleep.
That was super dope. Granted the lyrics displayed on the video were off in some areas, but that doesn't deflect from how AWESOME the song was, or how DEEP and introspective the lyrics themselves are.
Once again, Alex delivers a great, DOPE ASS, reaction to an incredible song. Just watching him react, with all the facial tics and eyeball pops, with all the WOOHOOs and his improved headbanging, he is by far one of the best reactors out there on this social medium.

If you could be as so kind, please check out "Yuve Yuve Yu" by The HU. I discovered this song in the Recommended For You columns, and I was blown away. I believe you would be as well. It's Mongolian Folk-Metal (Epic by itself.) and they use traditional instruments and include throat-singing. The song is unbelievably catchy and makes you feel like everything is DOPE.

Man I remember being 17 and waiting for this album. This was the song I was most excited for when the tracklist was announced. Still get shivers listening to it 10 years on.
Fun fact - Death Magnetic and Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone came out like a week apart in summer '08.
I waited to get both and then spent the night drinking and bingeing them on my balcony.
