When are you getting Emma Taylor from Love to learn drums on, make *IT HAPPEN*
What's the point of this, if you choose songs where the drum parts are so obvious?
May be the second best one take behind Chad’s….
@blechtic it's not about trying to stump the drummers.. its just a good time and fun to watch. Why make it more than that?
@@zerochill1403 If the beat is obvious, it leaves less room for the drummer's interpretation, which should be the whole point, right? It's about giving room to make different choices.
She hits hard and hit the snare like it owed her rent money. Great take. Glad this series continues.
Lol what kind of landlords do you know
this "HiT thOSe DruMs LikE thEy OwE HeR MonEy" is getting so tired. we need to stop saying this.
Especially when it was on guitar hero but she did made mistakes and there no reason to lie that's why they try rd it's a game
I thought that she was angrier at the high hat, she beat that thing like a rented mule. Great stuff!
She hits those drums like Ike hit Tina

Agreed.
I've never heard of Jess, but as a drummer, nothing but respect. She heard the track only once, took no notes and went for it. That takes an enormous amount of confidence and she killed it. She's very talented. I'm a fan now.
Hi Jess Bowen. I heard that song billions times. You never heared it before. And you said you are not the type of person that can hear a song and play it in one take. This is a sentence that you never can tell anymore. Because You are that kind of person. Thank you very much for that.
for a drummer that's nervous about playing metal, she hits that cymbal like it stole her grandma's purse.
😂😂😂😂😂
Oh my god, that's the funniest expression ever!
I love this comment
She's getting off on the excuse to knock f**k out of 'em 😉
Her biggest influences are Travis Barker and Dave Groh, two of the most aggressive drummers there are lol probably just down playing herself.
i love how aggressively she plays the drums, especially for a song like this. She killed it. Amazing.
on re-watch, the beginning were drums drop off the original, I LOVE what she played thru that part
Never heard of this woman but Chad Smith and Ms. Bowen, so far, are the only drummers who did a song without taking notes. Thanks for inviting her to play and releasing this footage because i am gonna look up all the bands she played with!!
For a first-time play-through with zero preparation, SHE FUCKING CRUSHED THAT! These "Hearing For The First Time" videos are killing me, I love them, keep 'em coming as long as you can Drumeo.
Next in the series: Dave Grohl hears Nirvana for the first time

That kit sounds so good. She was so on-point with that first take - totally nailed the feel of the song and interpreted extremely well. Yeah the part is more straight forward than what she put down but I think it could have been a solid representation of what that song might have been like if it were recording in the last few years. Anyways, loved it - these segments are why I follow Drumeo.
Having never heard of Jess before I have to say she was the perfect person for you to choose to play this song as she just has so much energy and hits the drums so hard which is a perfect match for rage songs please never stop making these videos

IMO you DEFINITELY did it justice. That song deserves that energy. There are times it could have breathed a little more but I loved it the whole way through and it’s that energy.
Why do women always tend to apologize…. She could have been like yea, yup, that’s me. I’m cool like that.
@@esthershin9690 Women? I think any drummer with respect for any other band would say sorry or act humble lol
@@esthershin9690 If you've watched any other of these videos you wouldn't be saying women, you'd be saying drummers. They all do this.
It's not just women, it's any good musician in general because you can't be super good unless you're always analyzing and improving. At least that's what I've always felt about playing and many interviews of professional musicians you hear that. Not many pros would ever say 'Boy, I sure am the cats ass'.
Because that’s not how professionals act, women or not.
As a drummer the reason I love this series is because it shows what really gets you work and that’s playing for the song and not yourself.
"I'm not the type of drummer who can just hear a song and make a drum part" the. Proceeds to absolutely nail it in one take after 1 listen
It’s crazy to me how timid she was while she was talking, and how confident she was while playing
I'm a drummer, I'm quiet and reserved. Drums... I go nuts. It's a form of expression that feels better than any drug.
because she actually knows the song, and she's playing it off like she doesnt lolol. stop being naive
As a drummer. She's just in the groove. I wouldn't be surprised if she really knew the song but almost anyone who is doing something they truly love will do it with confidence.

Or maybe it's just the age difference? :) She was a child when this came out. I'm 50 and I wouldn't be surprised if I got caught not knowing about some particular song which was released when I was a kid :)
What great energy all around!
I'm always pleasantly surprised and positively perplexed when people haven't heard certain songs. This was another one!
I love this series.
So! I just found Drumeo (very excited to be here) and while I may not be a drummer, I've enjoyed studying music for years. This was absolutely awesome! All the compliments to Jess, I can't wait to check out more of your work!
As a bassist I seriously appreciate the simplicity at the root of her playing and her accents are SO GOOD and she hits SO HARD. Love it.
Don't cream
I really enjoyed the bit around 5:15 when she starts doing the fast drum rolls while Zach is singing about libraries and the mind cemetery. That's just a really funky bit right there that always makes me smile. 😄
Agreed. People try to do too much. Thats why Rage was so good in the first place, that Rythym section was tight and didnt go crazy.
I mean what she's doing is far more complex than what Brad Wilk did
As a super saiyan my comment is inherently more valid than if I weren't.

I love this series. It makes you appreciate the original drum part AND the artistry of the people coming up with their own part on the fly
I love how the crew, even after years of playing drums, still aren't immune to air drumming to that rolling drum part xD EVERYONE does that. it's just so atavistic and primal.
It's like being at a Rush concert... 😂
I'm sure there's a lot of the listeners that are also air drumming 😂 me included!
reminds me of how my drum line friends would listen to music when hanging out!
Yes, any stupid person who doesn't know how to listen to music without attracting the attention of others (because playing air drums doesn't show anyone that you know how to play music) does that.
@@eduardoperalta2890eh?
Another cool thing you realise about RATM is that the drums have so much presence and groove without being overly complicated or showy. Brad Wilks is a powerhouse of understated rock drumming that was perfect for the RATM sound.
That's why I thought he was a good replacement for Sabbath. Bill Ward was much more groove-oriented than people realize.
Yep. SO. MUCH. GROOVE.
Brad is a master of understatement. Hard hitting and perfect groove and sync with the bass (really give it the hip hop vibe it deserves).
well said!

I have no idea how Drumeo ended up in my feed, but I'm so glad! It started with Chad Smith, and has been a blast getting these. Exceptional video!!
These just keep getting better!!! I love these videos and hope for many more to come!
To be honest, I'm never disappointed that someone never heard a "very famous" song when it's in this kind of video. Because it means the video is going to be a killer vid.

People need to realize that these exercises are not about nail the drum parts, but to see a differente drummer in action on a song, their process, approach and creativity. There's nothing to be afraid of.
She actually came up with great fills!
I like this comment a lot.
Fr I’d be way more scared of the challenge where they learn the actual drum part
@@CristianKirk what are fills?
@@mejulian01 fills are drum phrases that guides the music to another session. Example: at the end of the verse the drummer can do a fill and then the chorus begin.
You do a groove and sometimes you finalize it with a fill.
Her high-hat work is freaking amazing. A lot of people get sloppy with the tempo and whether the high-hat is open or closed, but she was not just controlled but absolutely precise.
These videos are sooo much fun to watch, I'm not even a drummer and I always love these.
These videos really highlight how much drummers bring their own style to a band. They often don't get enough writing credit for songs.
When they said “you’re in your own head”, this is what they mean.
She KILLED that take, and everyone loves her take, but she’s her harshest critic.
But she couldn’t believe she KILLED IT. She did kill it! She’s amazing.
Her personal break down was actually refreshingly honest. She did great. She could of let it breathe in spots a little more, but she points that out herself. Plus she was simultaneously doing the exercise and playing around with the song to feel it out. I thought her after commentary was every bit as good as the performance was.
But that's what makes good players good is that they don't settle for mediocre.
@@plane_guy6051 That’s true. But, respectfully, there’s also a difference between imposter syndrome and honest criticism.
I’m surely projecting my own issues onto this musician, and I hope she never doubts her own skill.
But the human condition is to question and doubt oneself, rather than own excellence whilst striving to be better.
All this to say, she’s amazing, I love her take, damn good interpretation.
@@TheRayfield77 100%
Yeah I'm not a fan of how harsh she was on herself. The part that always twists me up is when she says "This is really gonna put me in my place" And I'm just like "girl, your place is at that fucking drumset, because you have good skills and improvisational talent."
As a female drummer I just gotta say that I've noticed whenever women do these types of vids they're so apologetic and there's no reason to be! You absolutely killed it and no one person can ever know every single song, even the iconic ones. Your performance just makes me want to practice until I can play like you. Thank you for taking a chance and giving it a go!
Nobody cares about your gender if you're dope. She's got great feel and is applauded in the comments for it. Her demeanor is the result of being humble and guilt from lying about never hearing this song before. You can become a perfectionist about your craft too someday so more practicing and less girl power mindset
@@MC_Hammerpants noo its a thing. women do apologize more than men. also i never heard this song until today
@@MC_Hammerpants For someone that doesn't care about gender you sure do talk about it a lot. Thanks for being the perfect example of who not to be as a commenter on these vids.
I totally agree with you! I thought it was a bit sad how much she felt "sorry for not doing a good job" when she truly killed it!
@@NavalsLounge yeah I can't remember her name but there was another Latina pop drummer that did the same thing in one of these vids! She was so down on herself and criticizing her own take on a song she'd never heard before when she truly killed it! Hilarious when she said she was trying to pick up on the dynamics. Angry. Its angry all the way through. She absolutely crushed it especially with a single take. Another great addition to the series.
Yeah, but there's still dynamics. Sometimes it's loud angry. And sometimes it's very loud angry.

Is not about nailing exactly what the song does, it's about how the drummer interprets it for the first time in their own style/way. Pretty good to me, I don't like the posture, but the sound is quite good for what it is.

Brad’s drumming is so simple and understated. I really liked hearing Jess’ more complex take, with more accents and fills. She absolutely nailed it!
Yeah she had a “harder” feel that really works well. I guess I never realized how groovy the original kinda is.
This is an excellent take. Brad does what he hears the song telling him to do. Jess heads a different voice. Both add different but equally effective support.
@@scene24man Along with lyrical content and Tom Morello's musicianship, what really separates Rage from the rest of the 90s rap rock also-rans is how tight and funky their rhythm section is.
Yeah, Rage used a lot of primal beats in their songs and let Tom explore the room with his unique guitar wizardry. The drums were used more as a thump than a musical instrument at times, which is probably what made them so good. If Brad were back there using a lot of fills, double bass, complex signatures, etc it probably would have drowned out Zack’s crucial lyrics and Tom’s riffs somewhat.
Yeeeeeeeees girl. Great job. Gives the song a new touch. Thx for interpretating this in your way. Amazing.
Well done, don't be so hard on yourself. Drummer of 47 years here, I was impressed. Great job simply feeling the material. Rad. 🥁🔥

And how on earth is this first take so good? That's mindblowing. Her reaction to the song structure and energy is on point.
She says she didn't do it justice! How modest, when she actually slayed it! Very impressive! I wish that I knew drummers that were HALF as good as her with such a humble attitude. Don't change a thing - do it your way, all the way!
Her humbleness is directly proportional to her talent. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The artists they bring on this channel are so consistently amazing I think it’s easy to take for granted how impressive doing something like this is.
