When does a man die? When he is forgotten.
Cliff still living 35 years later. 😁
You know, I bet when cliff died, he never expected people to still be talking about him 30 some years later. Let alone have a fan base with thousands of people!!

Ever think of what you want to be remembered for?
Alex: "Almost 3 minutes w/ no lyrics!!"
James & Every Metallica Fan: "Hold my beer"...
Cliff's bass being buried in the mix gives this song a sense of the darkness that is Cthulu. It's like the beast is scouring through the ocean ready to strike. Cliff is a fucking master.
It truly is The Thing That Should Not Be!
You probably have already but if not check out the remastered versions of every cliff song with the bass boosted. You can already hear what he is doing if you have an ear like you pointed out. That being said having him basically in lead or alongside it at least makes it all the clearer how fucking amazing he was RIP Cliff we love you.
Cliff’s distorted and wah infused bassline is the eldritch horror lurking beneath the surface that the other instruments ride on. And the solos feel like the panic and madness of those who catch sight of it.

I bought a Big Muff Pi and Morley PowerFuzz Wah specifically to play this song and FWTBT

Hard choice.

Both... and To Live is to Die.
Orion
Orion is just one of those musical genius songs. Ktulu is more of a jam. Orion is like a journey through space. Ktulu is like exploring the sea

Just for those who haven't heard this song before, in this version it has been tuned half a step down from the original version (the intro is in C#m instead of Dm)

@Syx I'm glad he went MoP, AjfA, RtL. If he does K'eA next, he'll realize that it was RtL that changed the landscape.....
Nothing can prepare you seeing Metallica live. There's a constant energy going back and forth between the crowd and the band that you feel though out the show. It's hard to put into words.

"At this point they're just competing with themselves." - quite the compliment but deserved, well said! Such an epic closing track to my fave album of theirs.
You HAVE to react to the live version of this with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra!!!
Hell yeah!! I've been saying this, just goosebumps all over!!
Until I heard it with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra I hadn't realized that song was made for it
Alex said he would love to see this live...the s&m version was absolutely fabulous
In every single way, that is an absolute must. I think the Orchestrated version is even better, and one of the most incredible pieces of music I will ever hear. It would be a nice addition, companion piece to hearing the original version first.
Hopefully Kill'em All is next🤘🤘🤘

This Song was originally entitled "When Hell Freezes Over"... I saw them Play it in Orlando Florida Before the record came out... but dont know why they changed the title... And as usual Cliff Burton really shows his passion while playing here in those long murderous growls on the bass at the end of the chord progressions..... its almost like a monster growling - "WAAAAAAAAA" - pretty much ALL of those background growls and tones in the early records were from the fingers of Cliff Burton, dude was vicious, and his head was like, on a FKN swivel... supreme headbanger (RIP)... I miss Cliff. He was a like THE bass guitar Grandmaster.

Probably the most underrated metallica song. One of the most beautiful 'metal' songs out there!!!
The late Cliff Burton was a fan of H. P. Lovecraft work and he introduced this to the band to get inspired. Some of the intros, outros and solos are inspired on his writings, but there are 4 songs on their entirety based on the Cthulhu mythos:
-The called of Ktulu
-The thing that should not be
- All nightmare long, and
- Dream No More.
Hope this help
Just went through an existential crisis so the beginning message was much appreciated. 👍🏼🤘🏼
Alex, It's time to "Hit The Lights." "The Four Horsemen" are drawing nearer. We'll be watching your reactions and feeling good with "Motorbreath", it's how I live my life. I can't take it any other way. So come on, "Jump in the Fire" Alex. With some UA-camrs, it's like "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" for them to appreciate Metallica, but not YOU. They can't handle acting like a maniac, "Whiplash." Other metal bands fall onto their knees, for the original "Phantom Lord", Metallica. I have "No Remorse", no repent in stating this. Alex, no more searching, "Seek and Destroy!" We're trying to get the message to you, "Metal Militia" is here with you. Some people ask "Am I Evil?" I am man. Yes I am. So Alex the day is coming. Armageddon is near. Inferno's coming. Can we survive the "Blitzkrieg" of Alex's reactions? YEAH YEAHHHHHH! We'll never stop. We'll never quit. Because YOU'RE Metallica! 🤘🤘🤘

I saw them in 1986, 5th row center stage. Cliff Burton was the reason I started playing bass guitar and he rocked the fuck out that night. It's nice to see some appreciation for their older stuff, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets were both masterpieces in their own right.
I know it feels like a lot, but you gotta do Kill em' all next, and complete the big 4. And then have to try and pick a winner from them. I think mine would be Master of Puppets.
After that for next full album should be Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden, or Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche.

Seventh Son would be awesome! I’d love to see Powerslave and Somewhere In Time too.

The original tile for this song was “When Hell Freezes Over” the progression at the beginning was written by Dave Mustaine before he was fired from the band and he’s used it many times in megadeth since. Most notably Hangar 18, and When.
Of all the songs on the album to NOT “learn something interesting” about, this was not it. The influence of Cliff Burton and his amazing atmospheric background effects, Metallica referencing HP Lovecraft and the Chthulu mythos, Dave Mustaine’s usage of re-worked themes in Megadeth’s Hangar 18, winning a Grammy for this on the S&M album… some much amazing stuff, bro!

Edit: In regards to the spelling, I was using Data, on an old, slow, broken work phone, outside in the hot sun, on a bike. My phone made some auto correct errors, and the sun made the screen hard to see. If you see a message, and start freaking out about the grammar to the point you don't even "read" the message, then you need to get your O.C.D. in check, and move on, rather then insult and assume the person writing the message is stupid, and can't spell. Nothing in the world is black and white. There's always variables, factors, conditions, etc. to take into consideration. If bad grammar bothers you that much, stay off the internet. It's probably better for your health in the long run. I wouldn't want you to stumble across something like "hAha, can send u Money tinight" or "WArnings GET too Shlter" have a heart attack. Between so many classics, The Call of Ktulu hides as an underrated gem. Somehow everyone shines in this without getting out of the atmosphere of the song.
Ah, yes... The other thing: when you react to Kill'em All react to Whiplash live at San Francisco 92. That's the highest point reached. That's the metal limit. There's no more.
Hey Alex... I got the chance to see them in 2017 in San Diego/ Petco Park... I went with a friend of mine who got us GA (general admission) tickets... It was my first outdoor/stadium show, and it fucking rocked... Was about 30-40 feet from the stage (right side)... I felt like I was in a sardine container, with all those metal heads next to me....
