  • What is the most common mistake I see people make when they come fish shield lakes for the first time?
    It's something we all do, it's hard to get away from because we have success while doing it.
    But I promise you if you take my advice, and the advice of many of the top guides and musky anglers, you will have more success in Northwestern Ontario!!!

    LOL. My boys and I unquestionably do this. It's almost like we get tunnel vision on what we can see as the "classics" for structure fishing. It's just hard to know when to fish the way you're saying if you aren't really familiar with the lake.

      The east answer on shield lakes? Start out deep and work in. Everywhere. Even weed lines. It's easy to move in tighter, impossible to pull out after you have spooked fish. Try it and you'll put more fish in the bag. You'll be shocked at how deep I fish when we get out together!

    Small mouth bass sit on that transition line and so do walleye. Where there is good sized bait there is always a musky hanging around. Your advice is perfect sense as this is where I find all my big fish.

    We usually will have one person casting to structure and other person casting "The Canadian Side" same thought process though. I caught by PB on the Canadian side rather far away from the weed/rock/reef structure. Yes!!!

    • @54orbust

      That's a pretty common thing we hear! It's easy to get caught always casting to something, it's hard to train yourself to cast to the open. Thx for watching, appreciate it!👊

    My biggest pike in Canada came from exactly that structure, caught a ton of pike but smaller ones shallow on a point, trilled the saddle to a nearby island, middle of saddle a 44 hit

    I remember listening to you explain this in the boat in the clip from this summer, and this is an awesome breakdown and reminder - this is probably the biggest single thing I am guilty of. You are definitely setting yourself apart from other channels with this type of visual (thanks little tikes!!!).
    Glenn - without having charts on a particular body of water, what are some of your tricks to find these break lines? Are you using Sonar Chart Live, or something similar? Curious what your homework assignments might be before launching the boat. I can't wait to try scoping things from 400' with my new drone, but I'd be interested to hear your take!
    Friggin' awesome video and thanks for making me a smarter angler (or at least making me think I'm smarter!!🤪)

    We work shallow structure from 1 cast away or so, and then always throw a few casts out to the deep side of the boat. But if we are sitting right on top those fish they wont see either cast!

    • @54orbust
      @54orbust  Рік тому

      That’s how we used to do it, now we try to stay out. If you spook them by being on top of them you can rarely get them engaged again.

      @kungfustereo Місяць тому +1

      @@54orbust Glen, if there can be fish in both spots, what's the best way to fish them both? Make 2 separate floats, one deeper first, then double back and work across it shallow?

    • @54orbust
      @54orbust  Місяць тому

      @@kungfustereo yep if you suspect deeper break line fish are present, always always stay deep and work in after. I'll cover this in another video

    American side: shallow-Candian side: away from the shallow!! 30-40' of water... monsters off the structure. Put the boat in 20' of water is a great rule.
