Mono-Black Devotion, but it's Rush of Dread Combo, Actually | Much Abrew

- Rush of Dread combo has fallen flat in Standard, but what if that's because people are playing it in the wrong format?

"Is high noon even good?"
Proceeds to get demolished by high noon.
It's one of my favorite Seth-isms honestly lol "is ____ even good?" And then gets beaten pretty handily and then wants to try it out
I think Seth now has to do a "Teaching Arena Zoomers about Rule of Law effects" video.
That point at the end of the High Noon match where he had just given up. Feel for you Seth.
@@AaronRotenberg "Teaching Arena Zoomers about the law"
@@AaronRotenberg seems like he already got taught himself
Opponent #1's red eldrazi list was really cool, I've been playing Abzan Eldrazi for a while now so seeing a completely different spin on it is awesome and I love the cards that the red uses.
Your list Also sounds Pretty cool, if its on mtggoldfish can you show me the name?
MBD without Obliterator. I don't care if it's suboptimal how could you?
I absolutely would watch an Oregon trail play through
Same!
Mono black devotion is maybe my favourite deck so pretty hype to watch Seth (probably better known as SaffronOlive) !
mono black devotion is my go to deck in pioneer
@@S4DC4T Mono black devotion and waste not is my jam
The Oregon Trail:
Congrats, you have dysentery.
Cool to see Seth playing Mono-Black Deviation, hiding a Rush of Dryad combo :)
Best deck since Murders at Markov Manor dropped.
@@RafitoOoOblack has been the best deck for like the past 3 years now
@@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle I don't think you understand, Back hasn't been the vest deck in a long time
@@Tinil0 really? Remind me how long rakdos was the meta for? Or esper? Ain't no way you're trying to tell me black isn't the strongest color right now
@@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle It's good, but Aftermath Analysis is good too.
Please PLEASE do an Oregon Trail playthrough! Oregon Trail 2 is so fun to watch people play!
Oregon Trail playthrough would be fantastic!
Patreon video or bonus stream are the obvious ways, but I'm sure it can get shoehorned onto the channel. ;)
Cleansing Wildfire on your own Indestructible land is something I haven’t seen before, pretty cool!
It's my little trick for my sliver commander deck, slotted a few indestructible lands just for the one that destroy artifacts and enchantments on ETB. If there's nothing else to destroy you are forced to destroy something of yours since it's not a may effect.
But indestructible doesn't make things illegal targets for effects like that, just like you can cast a counterspell at something that can't be countered, which is useless but it can have its uses (for example, mana drain still gives you the mana even if the spell isn't countered)
@@darkanayer5867I have a 5-color Artifact Commander deck that runs all 10 Bridges and Darksteel Citadel, I’m seriously considering slotting this in. I almost always have an Indestructible land, and I have 1 of each Basic in the deck… this might work
its a pauper all star with the MH2 artifact lands
Essentially a Rampant Growth that draws you a card in specific decks that run it
Very used in mono red prison/control decks, not only ramps but in relevant formats can help stop tron, urzas saga, depths, etc.
I'd watch an Oregon trail playthrough. Also, I've already gone like 4-2 or something in BO1 while watching the video. Love this archetype, and it gave me a good reason to craft the bloodletters (I already had the Rushes from just craving packs and the mana base from a previous devotion deck),
I would watch an Oregon Trail stream. Seth will butcher the names of everything there too.
i'd watch oregon trail
do it!
I love how this is one of those decks Seth keeps coming back to and updating every year or two
I would love an Oregon trail playthrough solely to hear you say "Or-gon Trail" for multiple hours.
Oof, match 1 game 1 opponent getting three Cleansing Wildfires + indestructible land is pretty nuts (especially when their deck can't have too many of them due to needing colorless mana producers), as well as double Forsake Monument. They ramped harder than a lot of green decks do.
Seth repping the days n' daze shirt gives me lots of joy. Great choice!
I would 100% watch an oregon trail playthrough
50:27 I've never seen Seth give up quite like that 😆
Yea right? I get OP could've exiled a card to Otherworldly Light to exile the Gifted Aetherborn and sacrificed one of the High Noons to kill the Eye Tyrant, but it's not guaranteed OP saw that line. Plus, Seth had the upper hand and was causing OP to answer everything he was drawing with Castle Locthwain lest he take a few damage points and die. That scoop seemed way too early to me.
I think he also edited out a lot of that opponent slow-roping the game and was just moving on with his life. Do-nothing, no wincon control players don't make for very good content (or friends, or people...)!
@@sveltemax3606 I am honestly surprised he didn't pick a different match to put in the video

Should’ve cracked the map token, Seth
Several times.
Map tokens can only be activated at sorcery speed
@@eduardoriemenschneider6101 I meant before he attacked. He always forgets to crack his maps before he attacks. Animate the land and crack the map during the precon at main. Still would’ve been killed in response, but would’ve been the best move, given his options
I would DEFINITELY watch you playing Oregon Trail…on a magic channel.
24:05
Your opponent isn’t casting anything for the same reason you’re not casting anything: you both have hands full of removal and you both know it. He Duressed you and you Thoughtseized him.
That mono red eldrazi deck looked really sweet
I find it amazing how much diversity you have in your Explorer games... *MY* queue is nothing but Greasefang or Amalia combo
I have a hard time watching Mr. Olives matches. Dude, you give up too easily.
Make them have it. Oooh, they have all the mana in the world and could possibly kill you next turn? So what. They might sit on three mountains in hand.
Make them have it.
Great vid! I loved how you worked the combo into an already viable deck so it has backups. Would def watch an oregan trail playthrough also.
I’ve been running a version of this deck that includes the Sorin Vein Ripper combo and it’s felt pretty great. Highly recommend
That opponent was basically just playing High Noon to turn Spell Queller into straight counter (instead of temporary, O-Ring style counter), right? Definitely a fun idea, but seems more cute than anything. Probably the only thing that might make it less cute and more viable is that if they don't draw their Quellers they can at least use the High Noon as expensive removal.
is that a Days 'n Daze shirt that Seth is wearing?? hell yeahh
Seth's play in the next to last match was kinda baffling. I think he must of have been tired and frustrated.
Combo decks are good when they have a shell that’s good regardless 99% of the time I feel, really smart to find that home in this deck, nice brew!
To Quote Troye Sivan, "I feel the Rush, Addicted to your touch!"
The deck is too expensive. Rush of dread worked out in my seal but card is too narrow in usage.
Richard needs to tell Seth to stop conceding so much when it's premature
Hate how fast he scooped to draws game one has plenty of time to come back with the combo
Mono red eldrazi sounds amazing
I would absolutely watch an Oregon trail video
Love the update to the deck! This is the only deck I play in pioneer. My version has a few underworld dreams / Shelly + a peer into the abyss, so you have a few other combo kills. It's nice to be able to board into a decent mid-range deck with some good creatures and card draw
I absolutely loved the Oregon trail. It's probably not very exciting now, kinda like how the ninja turles were not as hard-core as I remember.
Sign me up for the Oregon Trail stream!
I'll playing the bad version with Peer into the Abyss bc it combos with more cards, but maybe I should adjust
Orgon is my favorite state
I'm a huge fan of Rush of dread, even when played fairly. It's super useful removal that gets around protections/indestructible. at worst it's a Sheoldred's Edict for 4 which kinda sucks, but more often than not you can at least get 2 or more sacs if the opponent has 3 or more creatures, making it even out with the cost of '2CMC destroy a creature' but on a single card. Late game it can be a super good discard spell, getting 2 or more cards discarded for 5 mana. Because of rounding up, you can even hit people with a full hand size with a 'discard 4' which is BRUTAL. The loose half life effect is probably the best play even without the combo in place because it can make almost any deck race-able. if they've had no lifegain for the entire game so far, you're at least guaranteed to drop them to 10, usually less because of shock lands or other small life cost effects. very easy to clean up at that point. It can even swing a game that's stalled out as a topdeck if you can spree for all 3 effects
I still disagree with black "breaking the colour pie" with respect to having enchantment hate. Being stuck playing white or green - two colours that share a LOT in terms of what they can do - to get an enchantment off the board I think is a crime, and not the Thunder Junction type. Black being the colour of decay seems to make the most sense to get enchantment removal compared to red or blue, as enchantments can decay over time for various reasons - time, for example. Also Duress and Thoughtseize can already get rid of them from the opponent's hand.
Incidentally, I would not be adverse to one or two copies of Karn the Great Creator or something similar so you can turn your opponent's artifacts into something you can remove via Murderous Rider et al.
About 49 minutes in, maybe you could have Shot the Murderous Rider to stop the opponent from gaining life with the Helix?
Oregonian here…
It’s not pronounced Oregon… it’s pronounced Oreg’n…
Oregonians are very particular about that in spite of the fact that it’s a totally fabricated word with an indeterminate origin…
But yes, I would definitely watch an Oregon Trail video!!
I built a very similar deck, and really does some work in best-of-one explorer. It actually seems to do pretty well against aggro decks as they tend to keep greedy hands and thoughtseize really punishes them for it. There's enough incidental life gain that it can stall them out. Control decks it does decent with too because so many cards are must-answer threats. The decks it doesn't seem to do well against are non-traditional aggro decks like poison or mill. I would actually like to try it in paper but it's so expensive :sob:
I see MonoB Devotion, I click.
Personally I prefer to play Hopeless Nightmare in the main over thoughtseize/duress. Sure, you don't get to pick what they discard, but it gets another black pip OTB.
I run deep-cavern bat, with the aim of protecting combo
I play 2 Hopeless Nightmares maindeck as well, alongside 3 Thoughtseizes. Works really nicely. Also, I play 2 Vitos in my list - it does enable some really crazy lines
Deck should definitely be playing sorin ripper
rush of you area dead is fun af but i personally wouldn't call it a combo card since it has good power by itself and not only due to it's versatility. dread and avarice are themselves both great awesome black cards that solidify the identity of black of "while you play magic i'm here playing poker"
i would watch an Oregon trail video, just to laugh at you mispronouncing Oregon. As an Oregonian (pronounced ore-ah-ghone-ian) we pronounce it more like Ore-ah-ghen.
The first time I played Rush of Dread it was in an explorer devotion deck too. This really is the best archtype to play it in, with access to gary and warlock class really adding to the deck!
Oregon Trail, lets go
I absolutely love Phyrexian Arena. As a mono black player, I run 4 of em a lot. Probably not a good idea, but it does work so I will keep doing it
Do you think that lively dirge has potential in standard? - it basically is 5 mana to tutor up any 4 drop creature from your library to the battlefield - you could get Sheoldred, bloodletter or any other 4 drop creature on turn 5, but it also has flexibility as a tutor
Any chance we can get playlist that just groups stuff together by format. Like modern only playlist
Is it worth it to put some white dual lands in to put in Revival/Revenge for a redundant win-con? The Revival side also has some value.
i could see this brew getting competitive, maybe i could benefit getting more ways to tutor nykthos or combo pieces, or getting more agressive card draw
37:17 tap all the swamps plus a castle to play bloodletter and nykthos (plus activation), then activate a castle and you can cast the card because you will have 7 mana left over to cast what you draw
That failed meathook against High Noon was sad. If they didn't have a counter you win there.
100% will watch Oregon trail. The better you do in the game, the more rares you get in you next league.
İ will never fully understand Seth's hatred towards black enchantment removal 😂
I’d try and fit sorin vein ripper into this
30:45 Seth still unwilling to accept Black gets limited Enchantment removal smh
I'd watch an oregon trail video, and an organ trail video, as long as the characters are named after mtg character lol
Please do make an Oregon trail video and name the other pioneers MTG UA-camrs
I really fill like we are on different ladders i fight against so manybof these decks
SETH PLEASE 😂😂😂 it's pronounced oreGUN not oreGONE
"Gary Merchant"
Look seth, its either Gary or Gray Merchant. Not both
38:53 Wouldn’t meathook x=4 give three drain triggers tho?
I love anything with Phyrexian Arena. Such a great card.
Warlock class, any other wound reflection effect.
I love the redundancy of this deck. Warlock class looked really janky on the deck tech but those games against stone brain show its real power. Plus the level 2 impulse turned out very good.
10/10 would watch an Oregon Trail video.
Oregon trail Seth play through sounds awesome
"Teaching Arena Boomers About High Noon"
I feel like Tithing Blade would be good in a deck like this
This is totally been the deck I wanted to brew for a while and was thinking explorer for nykthos as well so I appreciate having a better deck builder to copy from! 😅
Interesting. What about Coffers in Modern?
I played against Seth running a Smugglers Surprise deck in standard the other day, waiting to see if it is included in a video since he wasn’t streaming.
I fully support an Oregon Trail playthrough!
I would watch an Oregon Trail play through!
>"It looks like mon-black devotion, but it's not!"
>It's actually just mono-black devotion
Invoke despair would be a fantastic sideboard option against Waste Not, maybe it could be a consideration?
Yeah I'd watch Oregon Trail. might want to stream it though because you can just take it easy and talk to chat
Just wondering why not run invoke despair?
I've been toying around with a similar list, which I kinda shelved in lieu of Waste Not, but I might go back and make both.
Double it and take it from the next person.
I really like the consistency of this deck.
Yes please play Oregon Trail. I would love to watch a gameplay video of that.
I'd love an Oregon trail playthrough
Oregon Trail playthrough we need it!
When is the Oregon Trail video going up?
Brings me back to the days of trying to jam scourge of the sky claves with warlock class
Definitely building this deck ❤ I love mono black
Please play Oregon trail OR organ trail
Would definitely watch an Oregon Trail playthrough!
Tymaret, chosen from death. All I'm saying....
Stop scooping at 16.
Hell yeah I'd watch an Oregon Trail playthrough
I'm already playing a version of this for pioneer 😁
