- What are the odds of winning by extracting all of the opponent's meaningful cards with The Stone Brain, Kotose, Deadly Cover-Up and Then End making it so our opponent can't possibly kill us with a deck that's spiritually a Standard version of Modern's infamous Lantern Control? Let's find out!

Non-pretentious Burn!
Thank you! I was wondering if I would be able to find it.
I have spent too much life watching Seth :D
haha, I could not for the life of me remember what seth was playing, the oppo is the only thing i remember from the movie.
I KNEW!
All I can recall is that Seth has made this callback before.
HE FINALLY SAID AFTERMATH ANALYST CORRECTLY
Gentlemen, we got 'em
Eijano: RESTORED!!!!
Was about to say the same thing
He said it right exactly once last video, and mentioned he says analysis! I was hopeful that since he noticed he’d clean it up. 😂
The world is healing
“We’re gonna hold up mana for the clue”
- Seth
Doesn’t crack the clue*
I have done that too many times
I changed my mind ;)
@@MTGGoldfish you also uses a deduce with 4 mana and the opponent was tapped out. And just didn't crack the clue. But that's doesn't matter if your opponent doesn't have any threats in their deck
Seth is so lucky there are people in the comments to point out every minor mistake he makes
@@ryanc3201 that's how I view his content, I judge how he plays the hand against how I would play it. And so if he forgets to do something. It's noticeable. But usually he talks through his choices. It helps me become a better magic player.
It's interesting how many "Why are there so many copies of this effect all in Standard at once?" decks opened up because WotC randomly decided to extend rotation an extra year.
I assume it was to differentiate it from alchemy right? since that is still 2 years but also includes the expanded universe sets they end up being fairly different
Yeah, that's actually my favorite part of the change. Decks like this or 36 wraths wouldn't exist without it.
@@Vael221 It was to revitalize Paper Standard. Reception is mixed so far.
Seth be like 'Whats up guys! Miseries back on the menu with this one!"
I remember playing MTG with my friends back in the day, and we knew each others decks so well that we would run Jester's Caps and try to snipe each others win-cons.
LOL, back then you had what, 1 or 2 good creatures lol
Game 1 was literally the act of pulling apart an insect's limbs one by one and just an absolute satisfaction of playing with your food. Such an exquisite lobotomy!
The pure joy of Seth in first matchup is so contagious. Thanks for the awesome jank!
I love this deck because a noob random assorted pile of creatures would beat it, but a well constructed deck can't.
Yeah, those random lists that play two of every cool card in someone's collection would literally be unbeatable, lol.
@@MTGGoldfishOr those people with 240 card decks. (I am one of them haha)
The corner case where redundancy and consistency are the enemy 😅
@@smegmalasagna I too once didn't understand the purpose of a minimum card count. You'll get there friend
@@smegmalasagnaYOU
Most people’s goal is to win the game, but Seth’s is to make sure the opponent can’t win
Considering some decks that were meta, it's concerning how close those two ideas sometimes are.
Yep.
2:15 The culmination of Seth's training arc
'It's important to know what's in your opponent's deck'
*exiles Guardian with Kotose, misses the one in the graveyard, uses Deadly Cover Up, exiles the Guardian he had missed and then says 'oh it was a 1 of'. Amazing :D
Yeah, the timing on that was rough, lol.
Didn’t he exile Knight with Kotose?
He exiled Coppercoat with The End, then Knight with Kotose, then Guardian with Deadly Cover Up.
He didn't exile Guardian with Kotose.
In fact, the Guardian was only in the yard because of deadly cover up.
Seth single-handedly increasing Hearthstone's player base
There's a card name for that!
It's just as dumb and frustrating as Arena is at this point 😢
Omg, I do remember the pretensious mono red player I think 😂😂 39:39
Can we get an explainer on this?
@@ethanleon7775I think it was actually Seth playing Lightning Bolt at the end of the guys turn, and he called him pretentious.
Yes! He played freed from the real and the opponent just led the game with lighting bolt on their main phase and just kept tapping out every turn and the game was super easy
@@henrye3935 That's right! I'm going try and look for the video because I'm pretty sure it was close to ten years ago.
Edit: I tried to linked it but you can search MTGGoldfish pretentious burn and it will pull up under a Much Abrew Freed From the Reel deck. Important part is at the six minute forty-two second point.
Same!
It's a great we have both wrath tribal and lobotomy tribal in standard right now.
LANTERN!!!!
I remember when you played Kaya with surgical extraction Tron, the matchup against Merfolk was legendary. I have wanted you to play another deck like that for literal years!
Do you remember the name of the video? I would like to watch that match!
@@teafordaniel809Kaya’s Extraction. It was from five years ago
Same
My thought as he started explaining the video from the start: Oh... He's exiling all of his opponent's nonlands, I get it now.
Here I thought the challenge was winning with a deck on only lands.
Pretentious red is one of my favorite MTGGoldfish videos. I gotta rewatch it every few months
Google couldn't find it, what's this?
@@njnjhjh8918 look up Much Abrew Freed From the Real Combo, and it’s the third match against (Not Pretentious) Burn
ua-cam.com/video/KUXk8c_Zg8Q/v-deo.html@@njnjhjh8918
Yeees! I've been craving this kind of deck! Always wonderful seeing stuff like this, Lantern, or your old Kaya's Extraction :D
thanks seth i’m totally gonna enjoy seeing this on the ladder this weekend! Deck is impressive.
I amazed how well that worked first game, and sticking it to that emergence deck was satisfying to watch!
Absolutely loved this deck. Thanks Seth!
This is literally one of my favorite strategies on Arena! So excited for Surgical Extraction to be legal!!
Surgical and extripate, gimme the oldies!
The new cards for this archetype have been great, "test of talents" "the end" haven't tried "deadly cover up" yet but definitely look to add it
Deadly Cover Up & The End are so nice when aggro is your worst matchup
"Wow, that's a risky strategy!"
Somehow that is so funny to hear on Against the Odds.
Super fun deck. I built it and love the interactions. Thanks, Seth!
I absolutely love deck concepts like this 😂
As someone who grew up making crappy Lobotomy decks, this is exactly my jam.
You rock, man. Favourite UA-camr period. You are generous, a clever gamer, and so genial. Keep me playing Magic not gonna lie. Thanks for all your time and efforts.
Reminds me of an old friends mono black ramp deck. He would use armiliary sphere and terrain generator to ramp into urborg with cabal coffers. His entire game plan was to kick sadistic sacrament then use a drain card to kill. The one that costs two plus x and spend only black mana on x to drain that much. Fun memories 😊
Seths high, cherub-esque laughter while he cruelly dismantels the deck is a joy.
Easily the funniest, semi legit strategy I've seen in a while, killer stuff
An interesting line during the Sheoldred part would have been to Path of Peril, bounce their Kotose back to your hand, Path wipes out the lockpick fairy, then sheoldred's edict kills the sheoldred.
Came here to say the same
This deck would do nothing against Crim's 67 card decks composed entirely of 1- and 2-ofs
one of the best Against the Odds videos I've seen, very entertaining and also didactic
That was glorious! I actually tried something similar not long ago, but I didn't go all-in enough with the lobotomy cards and therefore it ended up being essentially a weaker Dimir control deck. Time to try again by embracing the jank more!
I always love these decks. It’s really fun to get people with these cards
I love it. I’ve been playing this deck for fun on arena since the end came out ha. Coverup just made it more fun!
playing white for exactly one void rend is crazy
That's what I get for hanging out with Crim (although really the white is also so we can cleave Path of Peril too).
I love how Crim's one or two-of deck building would destroy this strategy.
Forever Seth’s mortal enemy
Seth with the amazing and obscure Futurama reference at 26:08
Excited to see surgical extraction with this deck!
Sweet! The Jester's Cap/Lobotomy/Eradicate deck I had from 25 years ago is seeing new life in Standard!
this deck is the msot fun i had playing a deck since ages
I actually thought about building a deck like this last week, super neat to see you had the same idea and how you did it! I don't think I would have thought of Jace, but that's a great inclusion.
Watching seth this happy brings joy to my mornings XD keep them againts the odds going man this is amazing LOL
I play something like this in modern and it feels extremely weird to have effectively my own deck explained to me
"We need a wrath or we're dead" game one, yup, definitely familiar gameplan haha
Probably one of my more favorite decks you've played in recent memory
Deadly Cover-Up is definitely a power house of a card. I took inspiration from your Land destruction video and made my own and let me tell you that you should've seen my opponents face when I used it to get their basic lands😂
I’ve been planning a deck with this concept for a while, I just never got around to building it due to not having the wildcards for it. Fun to see it in action
that first game was so crazy, I was dying laughing right with Seth.
This and the all wraths death feel like checks on Arena players "are you playing any manlands in your deck?"
That Kaya deck from against the odds is my all time favorite deck/video I have seen on UA-cam
The pretentious instant speed reference unlocked ancient memories in me. I appreciated that
This is a crazy deck. It's like a universal hater deck. I love watching you snipe all their threats.
"We are trying to exile... our opponent's will to play Magic" might be the singlemost sinister line in this whole episode.
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT BUILDING THIS DECK AND THIS VIDEO POPPED UP OMG
I remember the "not pretentious" burn player. They would main phase their instant speed burn spells because playing on your opponent's turn was 'pretentious'
I love that Seth created an amnesia deck and included Jace. Very thematic
Could watch this deck all day
Kotose and Shegeki are the coolest cards from Neon Dynasty.
i love this as a concept was already using deadly cover-up primarily for this purpose and that alone was enough to win a bunch of games
This archetype is honestly one of my favorite things. Sure, Extraction effects are only good against combo decks... but if you have enough of them, any deck is a combo deck. It's also deliciously salty, because your opponent ends up losing to a deck that conventional wisdom says is completely terrible.
It's one of those weird things about Magic, like how Lantern works despite consisting primarily of objectively terrible cards, or how threatening a combo can be stronger than actually executing it (see Temur Twin for a good example of this).
I’ve seen deadly cover up and the end do work against domain because once their atraxa is gone wraths take care of heard migrations too easily, but this is pretty incredible. Extracting every creature from a mono white aggro deck is a sight to behold.
I have wait so long for this deck
Seth, you're a monster and I'm here for it.
Hi Seth, it was me who sent you the "ten extractions" deck list. I must admit that your list is more interesting!
This makes me nostalgic for the miserable Seasons Past list I played at one time that kept looping all the removal from the graveyard and included this exile all of style card so in one game I just exiled all of my opponent's real cards.
Yes dude, this deck is the BOMB! I play a Grixis version on Pioneer, such a fun list
extraordinarily fun deck
I remember hearing you tell a story about it on one of the replays some time ago I do recall.
Petition for this deck to be called “Brainworm”
This deck looks crazy villainous and I love it.
Also have a future idea for against the odds. Currently trying to brew an explorer/pioneer Crime Novelist "Storm" Deck. Not having too much luck so far, but curious how you would do and if maybe its better for another format?
I don't think it's possible to surpass this video; you've won the game of Magic the Gathering.
Dinos climbing up a beanstalk is hilarious to me
Playing at Instant Speed is so pretentious lol. I remember that. You had cast Lightning Bolt at the end of their turn.
And the lyrics to The End by The Doors are "This is the end, my only friend, the end"
This is the most evil deck I've ever seen and I love it
One word: Beautiful.
38:55 I remember your story about somebody who likes to play only at sorcery speed, because they find instants to be "pretentious"
Crim is the villain we need, but Seth is the villain we deserve!
This deck is amazing.
This is my kind of deck!
This reminds me of a Kotose flicker deck I tried to make work a while back.
When Unglued first came out, my buddy built decks to play each other. One deck I ran used Hey Look at Me Im The DCI combined with Erradicate and Quash with Enter The Dungeon and a Shaharazd (we allowed a few proxies) to ban and exile my friends entire deck. With a set of Double effect cards (broken in subgames) you have so much advantage as more and more subgames start.
This seems far more efficient.
I hated lantern control in modern but for some reason, love this deck in standard :)
This was so hilarious!!! 😂😂😂
Love these kinds of decks 😂😂
I don't remember the exact video, but i do recall it was a Burn player who would just fire off Lightning Bolts main phase because playing at instant-speed was "pretentious".
I wasn't there for the original pretentious moment, but I've been binge watching old vids on the channel so I just saw that one the other day 😅
This reminds me of an Ice Age-era deck built around Orcish Spy and Millstone, ensuring that they drew all or no land
I think a Slime Against Humanity with Cut Your Losses would be a very fun Standard Against the Odds.
The deck I run has 30 copies of Slime, 90 cards total and I run things like Academy Wall, Fallaji Archaeologist and Picklock Prankster.
It's surprisingly good and lots of fun to play
The "pretentious instants" thing was hilarious
I loved this.
I typically don't care about Arena game plays but this one was different and I enjoyed it
Hey Seth, you should totally do a stone brain + doppelgang control list for maximum salt. Might be decent in a bant or sultai shell
It would be awesome if you'd include the wildcard count for these decks.
Regardless, hilarious video. I almost want to make it, but I have no idea of what is played in standard
I have similar Explorer deck, with Lobotomy effects like Lost Legacy and Necromentia, and Kaya Usurper as one of the finishers.
There are deck trackers that keep track of what you've seen in your opponent's deck. Those will be a god-send in this type of deck.
This deck is a rare opportunity :)
Deadly cover-up can exile basic lands in somebody’s deck too. so against mono color decks it’s particularly fun.
I know Jace isn't supposed to be our finisher but I am so happy he is such an effective finisher especially sine most people never thought he would be that good when he came out.
